ZERO unlocks its base-game fighters through a mix of Episode Battle rewards, shop purchases paid with Zeni, Player Level progression and tournament wins. Episode Battle routes are a separate challenge: you must make the correct story choice and, where required, meet a stated fight condition rather than merely win the battle normally.
This guide separates the 2024 base game from the optional Super Limit-Breaking NEO content and explains how to check the exact requirement for a character, alternate route, ending or episode reward.

What Episode Battle is
Episode Battle is the single-player story mode in which you play through the perspectives of eight selected characters. Story scenes and battles alternate, and certain turning points can diverge from the original Dragon Ball storyline. The divergence is triggered by a decision in a scene, the result of a fight, or both.
Eight character perspectives
Each perspective has its own sequence of situations, battles and possible branches. Completing a character’s normal path is not the same as completing every route in that character’s episode. A clear can therefore produce a normal ending while leaving an alternate route, Sparking Episode or other reward locked.

- Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero takes the legendary gameplay of the Budokai Tenkaichi series to a whole new level.
- Use the destructive power of the strongest fighters ever competed in Dragon Ball!
- Learn and master an incredible group of playable characters, each with individual skills, transformations and techniques.
Choices and battle results both matter
Bandai Namco’s description of Episode Battle specifically says that story developments can change according to player choices and battle outcomes. Do not assume that selecting a dialogue option alone opens a branch, or that a standard victory is enough. The battle-details screen is the authoritative place to see what the current encounter requires.
All base-game character unlock methods
The launch version contains 181 fighters, a count announced by Bandai Namco Entertainment America in 2024. That is the launch figure, not a claim about the post-DLC roster. In the base game, the following systems can contribute to unlocking fighters:
| Route | What you do | What it can provide | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Episode Battle rewards | Progress through a character’s story and complete the qualifying episode content. | Some playable fighters and story-related rewards. | Only certain episodes award a fighter; finishing a story does not automatically unlock every character. |
| Shop purchases | Spend Zeni earned while playing on fighters shown in the in-game shop. | Characters that the shop currently lists. | Availability varies by fighter and can depend on Player Level. |
| Player Level | Raise your account’s Player Level through normal play. | Access to additional shop options as the level requirement is met. | Level progression expands availability; it does not by itself award the entire roster. |
| Tournaments | Win qualifying tournament events. | Characters awarded by those tournaments. | The specific reward depends on the tournament; not every fighter is a tournament reward. |
Episode Battle rewards
Play the relevant character episode and watch for reward notices after a qualifying completion. Story rewards are one possible route, not a universal rule. If the fighter does not appear after a clear, check whether the episode actually lists that character as a reward and whether you completed a branch-specific objective rather than only the default battle.

Zeni is the game’s currency for shop purchases. Earn it through play, open the shop and inspect the character listings. A purchase is possible only when the fighter is both listed and affordable. If a character is absent, do not assume the shop is bugged: Player Level gates can hide additional options until your account advances.
Player Level progression
Your Player Level determines when more shop content becomes visible. Continue playing the modes you already use, then revisit the shop after the level increases. This is an availability gate, not a separate character-by-character mission, so raising the level can reveal a purchase route without replacing the need for Zeni.

Tournament rewards
Tournaments are another possible source of fighters. Enter the event whose reward list names the character you want and complete the required win. Because rewards are tied to particular events, use the tournament’s own details instead of assuming that any tournament victory unlocks the same roster item.
How to verify a specific fighter
Unlock methods overlap. One fighter may be earned from an episode and also become purchasable later, while another may be tied to a tournament or a level-gated shop listing. For a named character, check the current in-game character or battle details first, then use a current character-by-character walkthrough if the game does not make the condition clear. Do not apply one fighter’s method to the whole roster.
How to complete an alternate Episode Battle route
Use the following process whenever an episode has a diverging path, alternate ending or Sparking Episode. It treats the branch as a condition to satisfy, not simply another chapter to finish.
- Identify the exact episode. Note the playable character, saga or chapter and the battle where the route can split. The same opponent can appear in more than one episode with different requirements.
- Open the battle details before starting. Read the listed objective, time limit, survival requirement, dialogue instruction or other condition. If no alternate objective is shown, a normal victory may be all that is required; do not invent an additional condition.
- Make the indicated story choice. When the scene offers a response or a choice of companion, select the option named by the route requirement. A choice can determine which battle loads next, so selecting the wrong option may send you back to the standard path.
- Complete the fight under the stated condition. “Defeat the opponent” can be different from simply surviving or allowing a scripted event. If the details specify a performance requirement, meet it before the fight ends. A victory achieved after the condition fails usually completes the normal branch instead.
- Confirm the result on the episode map. Look for the newly opened node, alternate ending, Sparking Episode label or reward notification. If the map shows only the original path, replay the split battle and recheck both the choice and the objective.
- Separate the reward from the route. A branch may award an ending or episode completion without unlocking a fighter. Conversely, a fighter can be obtained from the shop or tournament system even when an episode branch remains incomplete.
Why a normal win may not work
The official Episode Battle description establishes that both choices and outcomes can change the story. Current walkthroughs also list branches opened by specific battle feats or dialogue choices. Therefore, “I won, but the route did not open” usually means that the required condition was different from a standard victory, the wrong choice was made, or the battle was played in a different episode context.
Concrete example: Goku’s Raditz decision
Bandai Namco’s pre-release report gives a clear example at the Raditz encounter in Goku’s story. You can cooperate with Piccolo in a way that follows the original situation, or go alone. The choice changes who helps rescue Gohan and sends the story toward a different development.

Defeating Raditz is required to access the alternate storyline in that example. The fight is intentionally difficult. A Bandai Namco Entertainment producer explained that making strong original-story enemies easy to defeat would weaken the role-playing experience, so the difficult encounters are designed to make successful victories and alternate stories more satisfying.

Use this example as a model for other episodes, not as a universal rule. The game may require a different decision, a different opponent or an additional performance condition elsewhere. Always read that episode’s battle details.
A practical order for unlocking the base roster
1. Start with the Episode Battles you want to play
Choose a character perspective and progress normally until a branch appears. This lets you collect any story rewards while learning which encounters have special conditions. Record the episode name and the exact battle node whenever the map presents a split.
2. Check the shop after substantial play
Use earned Zeni on fighters that are currently listed. Rechecking after Player Level increases is important because a previously hidden listing may become available. Keep enough currency for the character you actually want rather than assuming every shop item is available immediately.
3. Use tournaments for named rewards
If the fighter’s details identify a tournament, enter that event rather than grinding unrelated battles. Read the reward information before committing to the run so you know whether the event awards a character or a different item.

4. Revisit unfinished branches
After learning the combat requirements, replay the split battles with the correct choice and objective. This is separate from purchasing fighters: an episode can be fully completed for its story reward while a shop purchase remains the fastest way to obtain a particular character, or vice versa.
Diagnosing an unlock that did not appear
The fighter is not in the shop
- Raise Player Level through normal play and check the shop again.
- Confirm that the character is a base-game fighter rather than a paid DLC character.
- Check whether the fighter is tied to an episode or tournament instead of a shop listing.
The branch did not open after winning
- Reopen the battle details and copy the requirement exactly.
- Replay the preceding scene and select the specified dialogue or partner choice.
- Make sure the required opponent was defeated, rather than surviving until a scripted finish.
- Verify that you are in the correct character episode and chapter.
The episode ended but no character was awarded
- Confirm that the completed node lists a fighter reward.
- Check whether the reward belongs to an alternate route that still needs its condition.
- Look in the shop and tournament information, since story completion is only one of several unlock systems.
The game feels too difficult
Some major fights are deliberately demanding. The official Raditz example specifically describes the difficulty as intentional. Lowering difficulty, if the game offers that option for the encounter, may affect whether a performance-based route condition is met; read the battle details before changing settings. When a branch requires a particular feat, practice the objective itself instead of treating the fight as an ordinary clear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Base game and Super Limit-Breaking NEO: what is different
Super Limit-Breaking NEO is optional downloadable content. It does not replace the base game’s character systems or original Episode Battle campaigns. The two release scopes should not be combined when counting fighters or episodes.
| Content scope | Published figure or feature | Availability and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Base-game launch roster | 181 fighters | Announced by Bandai Namco Entertainment America in 2024; this is the launch count only. |
| NEO character addition | 33 playable characters | Announced by Bandai Namco in 2026; these are DLC characters, not part of the 181-fighter launch figure. |
| NEO Episode Battle addition | Four Episode Battles | Part of NEO’s paid content and separate from the original campaigns. |
| Limit Breaker Journey | Solo progression mode | Choose a character and difficulty, earn EXP to raise SP, unlock higher levels by clearing content and spend earned Zeni on items. |
NEO platform status
The NEO launch announcement lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 were scheduled for a later date at the time of that announcement. Because platform timing is volatile, check the current official store listing for your exact console before purchasing or promising access to a reader.

Limit Breaker Journey
Limit Breaker Journey is not a replacement for Episode Battle. It is a solo progression system in which you select a character and difficulty, earn experience to raise SP, unlock higher levels by clearing content and spend Zeni on items. The official preview warned that its playtest version could differ from release, so use those mechanics as a system overview rather than an exhaustive list of every live reward.

Roadmap items are not automatic release confirmations
The published roadmap described Tower of Power (Solo) for winter and Tower of Power (Team-up) around spring 2027, along with powered-up Mission 100 and Survival modes. Those were planned items in the roadmap. Do not treat them as available on your platform unless a newer official announcement confirms release.
What you need to buy and play
The physical or digital base game is the direct purchase for the original 181-fighter launch roster and its Episode Battle campaigns. Select the edition that matches your PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or PC setup, and confirm regional availability before ordering a physical copy.
NEO is a separate optional purchase for its 33 characters, four additional Episode Battles and Limit Breaker Journey. You do not need NEO to access the base game’s fighters or original Episode Battle stories. Conversely, owning the base game alone does not grant NEO’s characters or episodes. Check the platform-specific store page for the current release status, edition contents and compatibility.

The most reliable way to track progress is to maintain two lists:
- Character list: record whether each fighter came from an Episode Battle reward, shop purchase, Player Level gate or tournament.
- Episode list: record the character perspective, chapter, choice, battle condition and resulting route or ending.
This prevents a common mistake: assuming that an unfinished alternate ending means a fighter is missing, or that buying a fighter completes the story branch associated with that character. They are related systems, but they award different things.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist before replaying a branch
- Write down the character and exact episode node.
- Read the node’s battle details.
- Note the required choice and select it in the preceding scene.
- Identify the required opponent and performance condition.
- Finish the fight without violating that condition.
- Confirm the new route, ending, Sparking Episode or reward on the map.
- If the goal is a fighter, verify whether the reward is actually a character or whether the fighter must be bought or earned elsewhere.
