The requirement that unlocks Bombchu Bowling
Bombchu Bowling is tied to story progress rather than to a separate item, side quest, or hidden conversation. The required trigger is completion of Dodongo’s Cavern, including the defeat of its boss, King Dodongo. Before that condition is met, the alley remains unavailable.

Finishing the dungeon means more than entering it or collecting an item inside. You need to reach King Dodongo, defeat him, and complete the dungeon sequence. Once that progress is recorded, the minigame becomes available the next time you visit the Market as child Link.
What you need before travelling to the Market
- Dodongo’s Cavern completed.
- King Dodongo defeated.
- Link currently in child form.
- At least 30 rupees for one attempt.
You do not need to discover a special Bombchu Bowling item in advance. The Bombchus used for the game are supplied as part of each paid attempt.

Where to find the alley
Travel to Hyrule Castle Town Market and look in the western section. The Bombchu Bowling Alley is a dedicated building there, separate from the Market’s other businesses and activities. Enter the building after the Dodongo’s Cavern condition has been fulfilled and check whether the operator offers a game.
If you reach the correct building but it does not offer play, do not spend time searching for another entrance or trying to trigger a random event. Check the two conditions that control access: King Dodongo must be defeated, and Link must be a child.
Unlock Bombchu Bowling step by step
- Advance the main story to Dodongo’s Cavern. Enter the dungeon and complete its required progression rather than leaving after partial exploration.
- Defeat King Dodongo. The boss defeat is the specific story milestone associated with access to the alley.
- Finish the dungeon sequence. Leave Dodongo’s Cavern only after the completion state has registered.
- Change to child Link if necessary. If you are playing as adult Link, return to the Temple of Time and change back to the child version before attempting to enter the game.
- Go to Hyrule Castle Town Market. From the Market area, move to the western side and enter the Bombchu Bowling Alley.
- Pay the 30-rupee entry fee. The operator starts an attempt only after payment.
- Read the displayed prize. The reward is revealed after you pay, not before. Then begin the ten-Bombchu challenge.
Why the operator hides the prize
The operator intentionally keeps the reward secret until you commit to the entry fee. His in-game explanation is:

That dialogue explains why you cannot inspect a prize list before paying. If you are trying to obtain a particular one-time reward, treat each entry as a chance-based selection rather than assuming the prize can be chosen manually.
What happens in a paid attempt
Each game costs 30 rupees and supplies ten Bombchus. Your objective is to land Bombchus in three targets before those ten shots are exhausted. The targets are arranged in sequence, and each stage introduces timing problems that can make a technically correct line fail if you launch while an obstacle is in the way.

The challenge is not ordinary bowling with a ball that stops at a pin. A Bombchu travels forward along the course, so the useful skill is timing a launch and correcting the horizontal position before the target. The guide descriptions emphasize using the arrows on the floor as positional references and waiting for a clear lane.
How to clear each target
Target one: center lane and moving blade
The first target is centered. A moving blade trap sits in front of it, so a Bombchu launched at the correct horizontal position can still be destroyed or diverted if the blade crosses the lane at the wrong moment.
Stand near the corresponding center arrow and watch the blade’s movement. Launch when the trap has cleared the path, rather than trying to rush the shot immediately after the previous attempt. Because the target is centered, avoid unnecessary side-to-side adjustment; the main decision here is timing.
Target two: choose a side around the Cucco
The middle target can appear on the left, center, or right. A Cucco adds another moving obstruction, which means the best line depends on the target’s current position and the bird’s location.
Use the center arrow as your starting reference, then adjust left or right to match the target. Wait until the Cucco clears the route you intend to use. If the target is offset, do not continue aiming straight down the middle simply because the first target was centered; horizontal alignment matters more than preserving the previous position.

Target three: centered target with a larger Cucco
The final target is centered, but a larger Cucco creates an additional timing hazard. Return your aim to the center reference and observe the bird before launching. The safest attempt is the one made with a visibly open path, not the one made during a narrow gap that you hope will remain open.

Because the game gives only ten Bombchus for all three targets, preserve shots by waiting for a clear opening. A miss consumes part of the same fixed supply, so repeated quick launches reduce the margin available for later targets.
A practical timing routine
- Identify the target position. Decide whether the target is centered or requires a left/right adjustment.
- Set Link near the matching arrow. The arrows provide the reference points described by gameplay guides.
- Watch every moving obstacle. For the first target, track the blade; for later targets, track the Cucco or larger Cucco.
- Wait for the lane to open. Do not launch merely because the target is visible.
- Fire once and evaluate. Use the result to correct your next position instead of immediately repeating the same timing.
- Reserve shots for the final target. Ten Bombchus cover the entire sequence, so early experimentation can leave too few attempts for the last lane.
This routine does not change the reward table or the unlock condition; it simply organizes the decisions that determine whether the supplied Bombchus reach the targets.
Rewards available from Bombchu Bowling
The operator can award one of five prizes. The game does not promise a specific reward before payment, and the one-time items do not become repeatable after they have been collected.

The Big Bomb Bag and Piece of Heart are therefore the rewards with permanent collection limits. Bombchus, bombs, and the 50-rupee Purple Rupee remain possible outcomes for repeat attempts.
Can adult Link play?
No. In the cited guide’s description, Bombchu Bowling is available to child Link, while adult Link cannot use the alley. If you arrive at the Market after completing Dodongo’s Cavern but are still adult Link, the story requirement is not the problem; change back to child Link through the Temple of Time and return.
This child-only requirement is easy to overlook because the dungeon milestone and the character’s age are separate conditions. Completing the dungeon does not automatically change Link’s current form, so verify both before troubleshooting the building.

Original Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time 3D
The documented unlock condition and the identity of the minigame apply to references for both Ocarina of Time versions: complete Dodongo’s Cavern, then use child Link at the Market. The available material does not establish a complete, version-by-version comparison of controller behavior, target visibility, or input feel.

That means you should not assume that a timing difference you experience on a particular platform changes the unlock rule. Treat control-specific practice as a version issue, but use the same progression checklist for access.

The building appears closed before the dungeon boss
This is expected. The alley is unavailable until the King Dodongo and Dodongo’s Cavern completion condition has been met. Continue the dungeon sequence first.
You defeated King Dodongo, but access still fails
Confirm that the dungeon was actually completed, not merely that the boss was damaged or encountered. Then leave and re-enter the Market after the completion state has registered. If Link is adult, change to child Link before checking again.
You are at the wrong part of the Market
The alley is in the western section of Hyrule Castle Town Market. Recheck the Market’s western side rather than searching the surrounding fields or another town.

Have at least 30 rupees available. The entry fee is charged per attempt, so an empty wallet prevents a new round even when the alley is unlocked.

You expected to see the prize before paying
The operator deliberately withholds the prize until payment. Seeing no reward preview before the transaction is normal behavior, not a missing menu.
Preparing for repeat attempts
Once the alley is available, a small amount of preparation prevents avoidable interruptions:
- Carry more than the 30-rupee minimum if you intend to try again after a miss.
- Make sure Link is still a child before entering the Market.
- Decide whether you are pursuing the one-time Big Bomb Bag or Piece of Heart, or simply practicing the course.
- Use the ten-Bombchu limit as a resource constraint; do not spend early shots on launches made while an obstacle is crossing the lane.
- Watch the target and the moving hazard separately. A target can be aligned while the route remains blocked.
For practice, focus first on reading the lane: center alignment for the first and final targets, side adjustment for the variable middle target, and a clear opening around each moving obstacle. The objective is consistent timing, not speed.

Completing Dodongo’s Cavern opens access to the Bombchu Bowling Alley; it does not award the minigame’s prizes automatically. You still need to travel to the Market, enter as child Link, pay 30 rupees, and complete the target challenge. Likewise, paying for one attempt supplies ten Bombchus for that game but does not permanently add every possible reward to your inventory.
The one-time nature of the Big Bomb Bag and Piece of Heart also means that later plays serve a different purpose. After those unique rewards have been obtained, repeat rounds can still provide Bombchus, bombs, or a 50-rupee Purple Rupee, but they cannot supply another copy of either unique item.
