To unlock more skirts and materials in Dressmaker, complete customer commissions and build reputation. New fabric patterns, colors, skirt and bodice designs, and better-paying customers are tied to progression rather than a single shop purchase. Once a skirt is available, select it in the sketchbook, assign fabric swatches to its panels, verify the style tags, then cut, sew and assemble every piece before delivery.
The exact commission, rank or friendship requirement for each named item has not been published in a verified table, and the controls can change between builds. The procedure below follows the Prototype v0.5.5 walkthrough, with version differences noted for the later Steam release and current fan-wiki build.

How skirt and material unlocks work
Dressmaker uses commission progress as its main unlock path. Finishing dresses and earning reputation expands the catalogue over time. The progression described in the available gameplay guide has four practical effects:

- Additional dress-style options appear.
- Customers with larger budgets and more demanding requests begin to visit.
- More bodice and skirt designs are added to the sketchbook.
That means a skirt or material that is missing from your current list is usually progression-locked, not broken. Accept and complete the commissions you can currently meet, deliver them successfully, and check the sketchbook again after your reputation changes.

There is no reliable universal threshold list
No reviewed gameplay source provides a complete mapping such as “skirt X unlocks at rank Y” or “silk appears after commission Z.” Thresholds may also differ by build. Treat any precise number posted for another version as a lead rather than a guarantee, and use the unlock state shown in your own game.
What counts as progress
A commission only helps when the finished dress meets its request at delivery. Requirements are checked when you hand the dress over; a dress that looks complete can still fail if it misses a requested style, component or other requirement. Successful deliveries are therefore more useful for progression than rushing through partially compliant orders.
Check your game version before following a walkthrough
The main step-by-step walkthrough used for this guide is from Prototype v0.5.5. It warns that the full Steam release launched on September 21, 2026, so menu names, controls, scoring and unlock timing can differ. The fan wiki records version 0.7.0 (Build 445), while another independent guide refers to Build 410.

Open the game’s version information, compare it with the guide you are using, and follow the labels and control prompts displayed by your installation. If a button or unlock is absent, do not assume the save is damaged until you have ruled out a build difference.
Where to choose a skirt pattern
Skirts are selected in the sketchbook. A dress has four pattern categories:
- Bodice
- Skirt
- Sleeve
- Collar
Each category can create one or more physical pattern pieces. A skirt is therefore not just a thumbnail or a single cut: a multi-panel design may produce several pieces that all need to be cut, sewn and placed on the mannequin.
Open the sketchbook and select the design
- Accept a customer request so the commission and its requirements are active.
- Open the sketchbook from the commission or design workflow.
- Open the skirt category rather than the bodice, sleeve or collar category.
- Choose an available skirt design. Examples described in the guide include simple, pleated and multi-panel skirts.
- Select the remaining dress components, checking that the complete combination can satisfy the customer’s request.
Locked designs should remain unavailable until progression reveals them. Do not substitute a different skirt merely because it looks similar: delivery checks use the commission’s actual requirement lines and style conditions.

Assigning different materials and colors to a skirt
Material selection happens before cutting. In the sketchbook, select a fabric sample or color swatch for each skirt panel. This allows a single skirt design to use contrasting panels when the design and request support it.
Use style tags before spending fabric
Inspect the style tags shown for the chosen combination. Tags such as Cute, Elegant and Professional indicate how the design and material read together. Match those tags to the customer’s requested mood before buying or cutting fabric. A technically perfect skirt can still underperform if its style does not meet the request.
Plan the material quantity and budget
Common fabric examples in the walkthrough include cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet. Buy enough material for every selected piece, including extra panels created by a multi-panel skirt. Leftover fabric can be reused on later commissions, so avoid discarding usable remnants when the budget is tight.
The fan wiki lists burlap at 0 gold per metre as a budget option. That is a recorded value for that wiki entry, not a universal price guarantee for every build. Check the price and available quantity shown in your shop before committing to a commission.

Complete workflow: from unlocked skirt to delivered dress
Use this sequence whenever a commission calls for a skirt. It separates design decisions from physical construction so you can catch a missing requirement before materials are consumed.
1. Accept and read the commission
Record every requirement line, including the requested skirt, colors, materials and style. Treat the request as a checklist; visual similarity alone is not enough at delivery.
2. Choose the skirt and other pattern categories
In the sketchbook, select the skirt design and then choose the bodice, sleeve and collar. Count the resulting pieces, especially for pleated or multi-panel skirts, because each piece creates another cutting and assembly obligation.

3. Assign swatches panel by panel
Click each skirt panel and assign its material sample or color. Review the style tags after the complete combination is selected. Change the fabric or color now if the tags do not match the customer’s requested mood.
4. Buy or reuse enough fabric
Check your inventory first. Reuse appropriate remnants, then purchase the shortfall. Confirm that the total yardage covers every pattern piece and that the cost remains within the customer’s budget.
5. Lay out each pattern piece
Place the skirt pieces on the fabric in the cutting view. Follow the grain-line arrow on every piece. The walkthrough describes a green outline as the confirmation that placement is acceptable.
6. Cut the fabric
Cut only after the layout is accepted. Recheck the grain line for each piece; a piece that is off grain can cap the final quality even when its seams are later sewn accurately.
7. Sew every seam
Move through all seams generated by the selected pattern. A multi-panel skirt is not finished after one visible seam; continue until every seam in the construction list has been sewn.
8. Place every piece on the mannequin
Transfer all resulting pieces to the mannequin, including pieces that are easy to overlook beneath or inside the skirt. The fan wiki states that the finishing control appears only when every pattern piece is on the mannequin and every seam is sewn.
9. Finish and deliver
When the finishing control becomes available, complete the dress and deliver it. The game evaluates the commission’s requirement lines at delivery. Meeting all of them succeeds; missing one fails the request even if the garment is physically assembled.

Why grain-line alignment affects quality
The grain line is the directional arrow printed on a pattern piece. Align it with the fabric layout as instructed instead of rotating the piece to save a small amount of material. The walkthrough reports that a green outline indicates acceptable placement, while misalignment can limit quality.
- Rotate or move the piece until the grain-line arrow is correctly aligned.
- Wait for the accepted-placement outline before cutting.
- Repeat the check for every skirt panel; one correctly placed panel does not validate the others.
- If a quality result is unexpectedly low, inspect cutting alignment before blaming the sewing step.
Why the finish button is missing after cutting
Cutting is only one stage of construction. The finish control is gated by two conditions: every seam must be sewn and every pattern piece must be on the mannequin.

Use this completion checklist
- All skirt pieces are cut.
- Bodice, sleeve and collar pieces are also cut if selected.
- Every listed seam is sewn, including seams hidden by overlapping panels.
- Every resulting piece is placed on the mannequin.
- No piece remains in the cutting or sewing area.
If the button remains unavailable, return to the sewing list and mannequin view rather than buying more fabric. Missing one small piece or one seam is the usual reason for an apparently complete dress to remain unfinished.
How delivery scoring and requirements interact
Construction quality and requirement compliance are separate concerns. Grain alignment and sewing precision affect the result, but they do not replace the customer’s requested design. Conversely, a design that matches the requested style can still fail if a seam or piece is missing.

Choosing between skirt and material combinations
When several unlocked options are available, compare them in the order that protects the commission:
- Unlock status: confirm the skirt and material are available in the current build and save.
- Requirement fit: eliminate combinations that cannot satisfy the named skirt, color or style request.
- Style tags: prefer the combination whose tags align most closely with the customer’s mood.
- Cost and quantity: ensure the fabric and required yardage fit the budget.
- Cutting tolerance: choose a layout you can align confidently, particularly when a multi-panel pattern leaves little room for error.
- Construction workload: account for the number of pieces and seams before accepting a tight deadline or low-margin commission.
A cheaper material is not automatically the best choice if its style tags miss the brief. Likewise, a visually attractive multi-panel skirt may carry more cutting and sewing opportunities for mistakes than a simple skirt.
Common problems and fixes
A skirt or fabric is still locked
Continue completing commissions successfully and earning reputation. There is no verified universal threshold for each named item, so compare your unlock behavior only with guidance from the same build.
The style looks right but the commission fails
Reopen the request and check every requirement line. Delivery validation is explicit; a close visual match does not waive a required component, color or style condition.
The fabric runs out during layout
Cancel the layout before cutting if possible, inspect remnants, and buy enough additional material for all pieces. Multi-panel skirts require more total pieces than their thumbnail may suggest.
Quality is lower than expected
Inspect grain-line placement first. Confirm that each piece received the accepted green outline before cutting, then verify sewing precision across all seams.

Count pieces rather than relying on the silhouette. Search for a hidden panel or unplaced component and review the seam list for one unsewn seam.
Controls do not match the guide
Use the prompts and labels in your installed build. The Prototype v0.5.5 walkthrough, Build 410 guide and v0.7.0 Build 445 wiki describe different versions, and the post-September 21, 2026 release may use revised controls or progression.
A repeatable checklist for every skirt commission
- Read and record every customer requirement.
- Confirm the current game build.
- Open the sketchbook and select the required skirt category.
- Choose bodice, sleeve and collar components.
- Assign a material and color to every skirt panel.
- Check style tags against the requested mood.
- Verify inventory, yardage and budget.
- Lay out each piece with its grain line aligned and wait for the accepted outline.
- Cut all pieces.
- Sew every seam.
- Place every piece on the mannequin.
- Finish the dress and recheck the requirement lines before delivery.
Following the checklist turns the unlock system into a steady progression loop: complete compliant commissions, earn reputation, revisit the sketchbook for newly available designs and materials, and construct each garment without skipping the grain, seam or mannequin checks.
