Skeleton Horsemen are Tomb Kings melee cavalry. In the current unit listing, their named unlock is Quicksand Swamp. Once available, use them as fast, shielded, vanguard-deploying harassment cavalry: send them around the main line to threaten exposed ranged units and war-machine crews, then disengage before stronger melee troops can pin them down. They are not a substitute for durable line infantry or heavy shock cavalry.
What Skeleton Horsemen are
Skeleton Horsemen belong to the Tomb Kings roster in Total War: WARHAMMER III. They are classified as melee cavalry, but their battlefield value comes from mobility and access rather than from winning prolonged frontal fights. The unit entry describes three characteristics that define their job:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Very fast: they can reach vulnerable targets, change flanks and retreat from a bad engagement more easily than ordinary infantry.
- Shielded: shields help them approach and fight under missile pressure, although a shield does not make them immune to concentrated fire or powerful melee attacks.
- Vanguard deployment: they can begin forward of the main deployment area, giving you an opportunity to threaten a flank, hide near terrain or pressure an enemy support unit before the lines meet.
Those traits point to a harassment role. Their preferred targets are exposed ranged units and war-machine crews. The same unit guidance warns that stronger units can fight them off, so a successful charge is an opportunity to create pressure, not a promise that the horsemen will break an elite formation by themselves.
Which faction and content you need
You must be playing a Tomb Kings campaign to recruit Skeleton Horsemen. They are an in-game roster unit, not a separate unit purchase. The unit is associated with the Rise of the Tomb Kings content first introduced for Total War: WARHAMMER II. Access in WARHAMMER III depends on owning the relevant game or downloadable content entitlement; ownership rules can differ by platform and by the products already linked to your account.
#1 Best Overall
Owning WARHAMMER III alone should not be treated as proof that every race-related entitlement is present. If the Tomb Kings faction is unavailable in your campaign selection, resolve that access issue first. The general publisher guidance explains the relationship between owned games or DLC and playable races, but it does not enumerate every current entitlement edge case. Check your platform’s library and the game’s own faction-selection screen rather than relying on an old purchase guide.
How to unlock Skeleton Horsemen
The consulted unit listing names Quicksand Swamp as the unlock. It does not establish a universal, patch-specific building chain, settlement tier or construction cost. Campaign interfaces can change, so use the name shown in your current game as the authoritative local requirement.
- Start or load a Tomb Kings campaign. Confirm that the faction and campaign you selected can recruit Tomb Kings units.
- Open the settlement or faction building panel. Select a settlement you control and inspect the building cards, tooltips and construction information. Look specifically for the Quicksand Swamp requirement named on the Skeleton Horsemen unit card.
- Verify the recruitment panel. Open the army’s recruitment interface and search the Tomb Kings melee-cavalry section. Select the Skeleton Horsemen card to display its current unlock text, availability and any local prerequisites.
- Build or control the required unlock. If the interface lists Quicksand Swamp as unavailable, follow the requirement displayed in your campaign rather than a third-party diagram. The exact prerequisite may depend on the current game version, settlement and faction state.
- Recruit from an eligible army or settlement. Once the card is active, queue the unit through the normal recruitment interface shown by your campaign. If the card remains greyed out, read its tooltip before spending turns or changing buildings.
- Confirm the result in the unit information panel. Check that the recruited card is Skeleton Horsemen and review its current attributes. The official manual advises using the in-game information panels because details may change after the manual was written.
Do not infer that a settlement named Quicksand Swamp, a particular construction level or a fixed number of turns applies in every edition. The reliable conclusion is the unlock name itself; your current campaign’s tooltip supplies the remaining local details.

Recruitment checks when the unit is missing
If Skeleton Horsemen do not appear, work through these checks in order:
- Faction check: make sure the campaign is using a Tomb Kings faction, not another race with a similar-looking skeletal unit.
- Entitlement check: confirm that the Tomb Kings content is owned and installed on the account and platform running the game.
- Unlock check: open the Skeleton Horsemen card and read the exact Quicksand Swamp requirement displayed in the current patch.
- Settlement check: select the settlement where the relevant building or recruitment option is supposed to exist. A requirement may be local rather than global.
- Army check: inspect the army’s recruitment panel, not only the global building browser. The unit can be unlocked in the faction while still being unavailable to a particular army interface.
- Turn and construction check: verify that construction has finished and that the game has advanced to the point at which the recruitment card becomes active.
- Version check: compare the tooltip in your live game with older guides. Unit locations, labels and prerequisites can be changed by patches.
These checks avoid the most common mistake: treating a community-maintained unit page as a permanent, complete building database. Use that page for the unit’s identity and role, but use your live campaign interface for patch-specific requirements.
What their battlefield attributes mean
Very fast movement
Speed lets Skeleton Horsemen operate on the edges of a battle. They can reach a flank before the main engagement, switch from one exposed target to another and withdraw when an enemy response arrives. Plan an exit route before issuing the attack order; speed is useful only if the unit has space to leave.
Shielded protection
The shielded attribute supports approaches against ordinary missile fire and makes the unit less fragile than unshielded cavalry in the same situation. It is not a license to stand under several missile units indefinitely. Concentrated fire, armor-piercing attacks and a blocked retreat can still remove the unit quickly.

Vanguard deployment
Vanguard deployment gives you an early-positioning tool. Place the unit where it can see a route toward the enemy’s support line, but avoid revealing it into an unavoidable counterattack. A concealed or screened start near a side objective can force the opponent to guard artillery and missile units before the main lines meet.
How to use Skeleton Horsemen in a battle
1. Identify a target before the battle starts
Look for ranged units or war-machine crews that are separated from the main melee line, deployed on a flank, or protected by only a small number of guards. These are the targets specifically suited to Skeleton Horsemen’s harassment role. If every vulnerable unit is tightly screened by stronger melee troops, hold the horsemen back instead of forcing an attack.
2. Deploy for access, not for a head-on charge
Use vanguard deployment to begin near a side route, behind line-of-sight-blocking terrain or at a distance from the enemy’s strongest combat units. Keep enough room to turn and retreat. Starting directly in front of an enemy infantry block wastes the advantage and invites a fight the unit is not designed to sustain.
3. Wait for the enemy formation to commit
Let the opposing line move toward your main army when possible. As units advance, gaps often appear between the front line and its ranged support. Those gaps create a safer path than an immediate rush at a fully formed position.

5. Disengage when a stronger unit responds
Watch the enemy’s movement orders and the unit’s health. If stronger melee troops arrive, issue a withdrawal immediately and use the horsemen’s speed to create distance. A second attack is available later; losing the unit while trying to finish one target removes your mobility for the rest of the battle.
6. Re-enter from a new angle
After the enemy commits a counter-unit, circle around the opposite side or switch to another exposed support target. Repeated short attacks can keep ranged units from firing and split the opponent’s attention. This is pressure and disruption, not a single charge intended to decide the entire engagement.
Target priority
| Target | Why it fits | How to approach | When to stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exposed ranged unit | It may be unable to fire while fighting in melee and often has limited protection when separated. | Use a side route or vanguard position; charge after the enemy front line moves away. | Withdraw when a stronger melee escort arrives or the target is no longer worth the risk. |
| War-machine crew | The unit listing specifically identifies crews as a target for fast harassment. | Approach from a flank, interrupt the crew and leave before the main army surrounds you. | Do not remain trapped behind the weapon or in a pocket formed by responding units. |
| Isolated weak unit | An unsupported unit can be pressured without exposing the horsemen to the opponent’s whole line. | Confirm that the route out remains open before charging. | Break contact if reinforcements close the gap. |
| Strong melee formation | It does not suit the unit’s stated harassment role. | Use the horsemen to bypass it rather than attack it directly. | Avoid sustained contact; stronger units can fight the horsemen off. |
What not to expect from them
- They are not line holders. Melee-cavalry classification does not mean they should replace infantry that anchors your formation.
- They are not guaranteed line breakers. A flank or rear charge can create an opening, but the available evidence does not establish that Skeleton Horsemen can break stronger units through a prolonged engagement.
- They are not invulnerable missile hunters. Shields help, but several ranged units firing together can still punish an exposed approach.
- They are not a reason to ignore the main battle. If your front line is collapsing, preserve the horsemen for a decisive intervention or retreat rather than sending them on a distant chase.
Building an army role around them
Think of Skeleton Horsemen as one mobile tool inside a combined army. Your main force still needs units capable of absorbing and dealing with the enemy’s stronger melee troops. The horsemen then create openings by threatening the support line, forcing guards to turn around and interrupting fire. Keep their orders simple: move, charge the selected vulnerable target, disengage, reform and repeat.

Compare the unit’s recruitment opportunity with the tactical job you need filled in your own campaign. If you lack a way to reach enemy artillery or isolated missile units, their speed and vanguard deployment have clear utility. If the battlefield is dominated by tightly packed melee formations with no exposed targets, their opportunities are narrower.

Open battlefields
Open ground gives fast cavalry space to circle, threaten several targets and retreat without colliding with terrain. Start on a side where the enemy has fewer screening units, then adjust once the lines move.
Defending against a broad enemy formation
When an opponent spreads out, Skeleton Horsemen can exploit the distance between the center and a flank. Their presence may force the enemy to keep a guard near ranged units instead of committing every soldier to the main attack.

Breaking a firing cycle
If an enemy war machine or ranged unit is repeatedly damaging your army, use the horsemen to interrupt it at a moment when the enemy cannot easily respond. The goal is to reduce incoming fire and buy time for your main force, not necessarily to destroy every support unit.

Cliffs, walls, forests and narrow passages can remove the space needed for a clean withdrawal. Before deploying in vanguard, trace a path back to friendly units. If the route ends in a dead end, keep the horsemen closer to the main line and use them as a reserve instead.
Using the unit card and in-game information
Open the Skeleton Horsemen information panel whenever you return to the campaign after a patch, start a new save or switch platforms. Confirm the displayed role, attributes and recruitment text in the live client. The official manual notes that game information can change after publication, and the community unit entry does not establish a patch number for every statistic shown on its page.
Record the exact wording of your current tooltip if you are troubleshooting an unavailable unit. A screenshot of the building or recruitment card is more useful than a generic guide because it captures your faction, settlement, campaign turn and game version at once.

Bottom line for campaign decisions
Unlock Skeleton Horsemen by following the Quicksand Swamp requirement shown in your Tomb Kings campaign. Their value is positional: vanguard deployment and very high speed let them reach exposed ranged units and war-machine crews, while shields improve their approach under missile fire. Use short attacks, preserve an escape route and disengage as soon as stronger melee units arrive. If you need a unit to hold the line or win a stand-up fight, choose a more durable part of the Tomb Kings army instead.
