To unlock secret characters in Vampire Survivors, first make the Secrets menu available by obtaining the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane. The commonly documented route is defeating Sketamari in the Bone Zone. Once Secrets is open, read the hint for the character you want: some require a normal gameplay condition, while others can be unlocked by entering a spell in that menu.
The exact roster and requirements change with game updates and downloadable content (DLC). Use the current hint shown in your own Secrets menu as the authority for your installed version, and treat older cheat-code lists as historical references rather than complete instructions.

What “secret characters” means in Vampire Survivors
Secret characters are hidden unlocks whose requirements are not always displayed in the ordinary character-selection progression. Their clues and, where applicable, spell inputs are collected in the Secrets menu. The menu is tied to the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane, a relic associated with the Bone Zone and the enemy Sketamari.

- Gameplay conditions: You perform an action in a stage, survive with a particular setup, find an object, or meet another condition described by the clue.
- Spell entries: You type a code into Secrets to trigger an unlock. The community spell reference says most spells are entered there, but it does not establish that every secret character has a spell or that a spell is always the intended route.
Because characters and DLC are added over time, a code list from an earlier build can be incomplete or wrong for your platform. The in-game clue is the best starting point.
Unlock the Secrets menu
1. Reach the Bone Zone
The documented route begins in the Bone Zone. The stage and progression requirements can differ depending on what you have already unlocked, so select the Bone Zone from your current stage list rather than assuming it is available in a new save.
2. Defeat Sketamari
Find and defeat Sketamari in the Bone Zone. The community-maintained Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane page associates this victory with obtaining the relic that unlocks Secrets and spell access. If Sketamari, the relic, or the menu does not appear as described, check your own stage and relic state first; wiki instructions can lag behind a game update or differ by platform.
3. Confirm the relic and menu
After the relic is acquired, return to the main menus and look for Secrets. The Secret page on the community wiki describes Secrets as unlocking after obtaining the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane. It also reports an alternate route involving the Yellow Sign and the collection menu. That alternate method is version-sensitive, so use it only if it matches the relics and menus shown in your installation.
If Secrets is still missing
- Recheck that the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane were actually collected, rather than merely seeing a relic-related message.
- Leave the stage and restart the game so the unlock state is written to your save.
- Verify that you are looking in the main menu’s Secrets entry, not the collection, achievements, or character-selection screens.
- Check whether your platform or edition has a different progression state. A community guide written for the 1.0 era should not be treated as a current universal procedure.
Read the clue before trying a code
Open Secrets and select the hidden-character entry you want to investigate. The clue tells you whether the unlock expects an in-game action or a spell. This step prevents the most common mistake: entering a remembered code when the current version expects ordinary gameplay.

Use the following decision rule:

Do not infer that an unlisted character is bugged simply because an old guide gives a different condition. Requirements are version-sensitive, and there is no single authoritative roster that resolves every current character condition across all editions and platforms.
Enter a spell through Secrets
Step 1: Open Secrets
From the main menu, choose Secrets. If the entry is unavailable, complete the Forbidden Scrolls route first; a spell cannot be entered from the ordinary character screen.
Step 2: Select the spell-entry control
Use the on-screen control for entering a spell. The exact button prompt varies by platform and input device, so follow the label displayed in your copy instead of assuming a keyboard key or controller button.
Step 3: Type the clue’s text exactly
Enter the sequence shown by the current hint. The community Spell reference lists examples and says most spells use Secrets; it is not a guarantee that its list is complete. One documented example is Poe Ratcho’s strongestcharacter spell. Treat that string as an example of the format, not as proof that every character uses a similar code.
Step 4: Confirm the result
Submit the entry and look for the game’s confirmation, then check the character roster. If the character is not present, return to Secrets and reread the clue rather than repeatedly submitting the same text.

The Secret page notes that a successfully used character spell cannot simply be entered again for another effect. Re-entering a completed spell is therefore not a method for duplicating an unlock or triggering a second reward.
Gameplay-condition unlocks
When the clue describes an action rather than a spell, complete it in a normal run. Because the exact conditions vary, use this workflow instead of relying on a generic list:
- Copy the clue’s important nouns and numbers: stage, enemy, weapon, level, time, item, or survivor.
- Identify prerequisites in your collection. If the clue names a stage or item that is still locked, unlock that prerequisite first.
- Start the named stage and use the required character, weapon, or item if the clue specifies one.
- Complete the condition in a single run unless the wording clearly permits cumulative progress.
- Finish or exit the run in the way your version requires, then check the character roster and Secrets.
If a condition appears to work but the character remains locked, compare the wording in your current menu with the guide you used. Small changes in a patch can alter a time limit, stage name, prerequisite, or whether a run must be completed.
Base-game secrets versus DLC secrets
Base-game characters
For base-game entries, start with the clue displayed after Secrets is unlocked. A 1.0-era Steam Community guide, “All the secret characters & cheat codes”, can provide historical context, but it should not be treated as a complete current roster. It predates later additions and may use requirements that no longer match your build.
Ode to Castlevania and other DLC
DLC can add a second layer of progression. In an October 2025 Steam announcement, poncle explained that for Ode to Castlevania, bonus-character conditions appear in Secrets after the DLC’s main unlocks have been completed. Follow that order: finish the DLC’s principal progression, open Secrets again, and then use the newly revealed clues. The announcement is available at poncle’s Steam community post.

Do not assume that a base-game spell unlocks a DLC character, or that a DLC clue is visible before the DLC’s main unlock chain is complete. DLC ownership, edition, platform, and installed version can all affect which entries appear.

Secret requirements are unusually vulnerable to outdated guides because the game continues to receive new characters and expansions. A third-party guide reports an update on 2 September 2026 and build 25016043 at JustGameGuides’ Secrets page, but that is still a secondary source, not an official master list.
Use a source only when its version matches yours. Check:
- Game version or build number shown by your launcher.
- Platform and edition, including whether you own the relevant DLC.
- Stage names and relic names as they appear in your language and interface.
- Whether the source predates a major expansion or a menu redesign.
When a third-party list conflicts with Secrets, follow the in-game hint and record the exact wording. If the hint itself appears inconsistent, capture the stage, build, and DLC state before seeking help; those details are more useful than reporting only that a code “doesn’t work.”

Troubleshooting secret unlocks
The Secrets menu is not visible
- Confirm the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane relic was collected after defeating Sketamari in the Bone Zone.
- Return to the title menu or restart the game to refresh the save.
- Check the collection for the relic and verify that you are not confusing the Yellow Sign alternate route with the primary route.
- Make sure you are playing a version that contains the feature; very old builds may use different progression.
The spell is rejected
- Read the current clue again and reproduce the spelling exactly, including the order of words and any characters shown.
- Make sure you are entering it in Secrets, not in a stage, the character-name field, or a launcher.
- Check whether the character is already unlocked. A completed spell may not produce another effect when entered again.
- Compare the source’s date and build with your installation before assuming the code is universal.
The clue is visible but the condition does not trigger
- Confirm the correct stage and prerequisite item.
- Use the specified survivor or weapon if the wording names one.
- Complete the run according to the clue’s timing or completion requirement.
- Reopen Secrets after the run; some unlocks are only reflected when the menu reloads.
A DLC character does not appear
For Ode to Castlevania, complete the DLC’s main unlocks first, then check Secrets for bonus conditions. Also verify that the DLC is installed on the same account and platform as the save you are using.
A practical route for a new save
- Unlock access to the Bone Zone through your normal progression.
- Defeat Sketamari and collect the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane.
- Open Secrets and read the clue for one target character.
- If it is a spell, enter the exact current text and confirm the roster change.
- If it is a gameplay condition, complete the named action in the appropriate stage.
- For DLC targets, finish the DLC’s main unlock chain before checking for newly revealed bonus clues.
- After every successful unlock, reopen Secrets before trying another entry so you are working from the current menu state.
This route is safer than copying a long code list because it keeps the installed version’s own instructions in control. It also distinguishes a genuine progression requirement from a spell that belongs to an older build.
What the available references can—and cannot—tell you
The community wiki pages are useful for the relationship between the Forbidden Scrolls, Secrets, and spells, and for examples such as strongestcharacter. They are maintained by players rather than serving as an official manual. The old Steam guide is useful for understanding the 1.0-era system but is explicitly historical. The 2026 third-party page may include newer additions, yet it is not a guarantee of completeness. The official DLC announcement is the strongest source for the specific instruction to finish Ode to Castlevania‘s main unlocks before checking Secrets for bonus-character conditions.
Because no single source establishes every current character requirement for every platform, the most reliable method is source triangulation: read the in-game hint, verify that any external guide matches your build, and use the official DLC announcement when a DLC-specific rule is involved.

Obtain the Forbidden Scrolls of Morbane through the Bone Zone and Sketamari route, open Secrets, and let the current clue determine your next move. Enter a spell only when the clue calls for one; otherwise complete the stated gameplay condition. For DLC, finish the main unlocks first and revisit Secrets. This approach remains valid even as individual characters, spells, and requirements change between versions.
