Square Enix’s official FAQ lists six online-related features: Ranked Match, Private Match, Online Joint Battle, Wranglers Society, Online Shop, and Player Profile. Nintendo describes the game more broadly as offering online battles, serious tournaments, friendly matches, and opportunities to earn prizes.

The Xbox store listing describes online co-op for two to four players and online multiplayer for two players. The exact way those player counts map to individual menus should be confirmed in the released game.

What you need before trying to connect
The game and the correct edition
You must own and install the game on a supported platform. On Nintendo hardware, pay close attention to the edition name. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition cannot run on the original Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch edition runs on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, but save data cannot be shared between the two editions. Buy and install the edition that matches the system on which you intend to play.
A supported platform and internet connection
Official information covers Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox, PC, Steam, and other supported platforms. You will need the platform account and network connection normally required to access online services on your chosen system. The published material does not specify a minimum connection speed or a required router setting.
The relevant online-service membership
Ranked Match, Private Match, and multiplayer Online Joint Battle require a paid online membership on console. The service differs by platform: Nintendo’s online membership on Switch, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation 5, and Game Pass Core or Ultimate on Xbox. Solo Online Joint Battle, Wranglers Society, Online Shop, and Player Profile do not require that paid membership according to Square Enix’s table. Square Enix also states that Xbox on PC and Steam do not require an equivalent paid online-service membership.

How to unlock online matches
The unlock process has one confirmed requirement and one unresolved detail. You need to progress far enough for the online area or menu to become available, but Square Enix has not announced the precise chapter, quest, NPC, boss, monster rank, or playtime needed. Do not rely on a claimed “unlock at chapter X” rule unless it is confirmed after launch.
- Install the right version. On Nintendo hardware, select the Switch or Switch 2 edition that matches your system. Remember that saves do not transfer between those editions.
- Start the main game and follow the story. Continue through the opening progression and complete the required early objectives. The exact trigger is not publicly documented, so watch the game’s own prompts rather than stopping at a guessed chapter.
- Look for the online area or menu. When the game enables online features, the available choices should include Ranked Match, Private Match, and Online Joint Battle. Wranglers Society, Online Shop, and Player Profile are separate online functions.
- Choose the mode you want. Ranked Match is the competitive queue, Private Match is for invited or friendly play, and Online Joint Battle supports cooperative play against a shared enemy. Solo Joint Battle is the no-membership alternative.
- Confirm your platform membership. If you select a console mode that uses live multiplayer, make sure the required Nintendo, PlayStation, or Xbox subscription is active. This check is not needed for solo Joint Battle or the listed social, shop, and profile features.
- Queue, invite, or join. Use the mode’s matchmaking or invitation controls. Cross-platform play is supported, so players on Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox, PC, and other supported platforms can play together.
If an online option is missing, that does not prove that your monster rank, team composition, or number of hours is too low. The release version may use a story gate that has not yet been disclosed.
Membership requirements by platform
Use this table when deciding which activities you can access without an additional online subscription. “Required” applies to the paid console service, not to ownership of the game itself.

Subscription prices and program terms can change, so check the current platform service page for your region before purchasing a membership. The game’s FAQ establishes whether a membership is required, not a universal price.
How each match type works
Ranked Match
Choose Ranked Match when you want competitive matchmaking and tournament-style play. The game’s online offer is described as including serious tournaments and prize opportunities, but the available rules, divisions, seasons, ranking calculations, and rewards have not been fully published. Treat any pre-release claim about a specific rank threshold or reward as unconfirmed.
Private Match
Private Match is the appropriate choice for friendly play with people you know. Select it after the online menu is unlocked, then use the invitation or room controls shown by the released interface. Cross-platform support means the participants do not have to own the game on the same platform, provided each is using a supported version.

Online Joint Battle
Online Joint Battle is cooperative content in which players fight a shared enemy. The Xbox listing gives an online co-op range of two to four players. The mode also has a solo option, which is the way to play Joint Battle without a paid console membership. Whether solo and multiplayer versions use identical rewards or difficulty is not stated in the available official information.

Square Enix confirms cross-platform play across Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox, PC, and other supported platforms. This allows a Switch player, a PlayStation 5 player, and a PC player to use online multiplayer together when the game’s matchmaking supports their selected mode.
Cross-play does not remove edition restrictions. The Switch 2 edition still cannot run on the original Switch, and a save created in the Switch 2 edition cannot be shared with the Switch edition. If you move between systems, verify which edition is installed before troubleshooting an apparent missing save or missing online progress.

Using the demo to prepare
The demo can transfer up to eight monsters of Rank G or Rank F to the full game on the same platform. Transferred monsters arrive in the Depot at level 1, with their talents, plus values, and family tree reset. You must progress far enough to unlock the Depot before adding those monsters to your party.
The published FAQ does not say that demo transfers receive a special online advantage. They are preparation for the full game, not a stated shortcut around the story gate for online menus. If you plan to use them in online teams, allow time to retrieve them from the Depot and rebuild them after the full game launches.
What to do if online matches are unavailable
The online menu has not appeared
Continue the main story and follow any new-area or facility prompts. Because the exact unlock condition is unpublished, there is no reliable chapter number, boss, NPC, or hour count to use as a universal checkpoint. Avoid deleting progress or rebuilding your team solely because an online icon is absent early in the game.

A console match will not start
- Confirm that your Nintendo, PlayStation, or Xbox online membership is active for the account launching the game.
- Check that you selected a mode requiring the service. Solo Joint Battle and the social, shop, and profile functions do not use the paid membership requirement.
- Install the latest game update and restart the game after changing a platform subscription.
- Verify that the platform network itself is online before assuming the game’s matchmaking is unavailable.
A friend cannot join
- Confirm that both players have reached the online area in their own save.
- Check that both players are using supported editions and have entered the same Private Match or Joint Battle flow.
- Use the game’s invitation or room controls rather than assuming a platform friend list alone creates a room.
- Remember that cross-platform play is supported, but a platform outage, maintenance window, or version mismatch can still block a connection.
A transferred demo monster is missing
Make sure the full game is installed on the same platform used for the demo transfer. Then progress until the Depot is unlocked; the monster is not ready to join the party before that point. Check the Depot rather than expecting the transferred monster to appear directly in the active party.
Launch-day checklist
- Confirm the December 3, 2026 release version and your platform edition.
- On Switch hardware, verify whether you need the Switch edition or Switch 2 edition.
- Install the game and any available update.
- Advance the story until the online area or menu is explicitly opened.
- Activate the required console membership before selecting Ranked Match, Private Match, or multiplayer Joint Battle.
- Choose Ranked Match for competitive play, Private Match for invited play, or Online Joint Battle for cooperative play.
- Use solo Joint Battle if you want Joint Battle without a paid console membership.
- For cross-platform groups, have every player use a supported platform and the same current game version.
- If an unlock or connection problem remains, record the exact in-game message and check a later Square Enix FAQ or guide, because the launch build may define a condition that was not announced before release.
What is still unconfirmed
As of October 16, 2026, official material does not identify the exact story chapter, quest, NPC, boss, monster rank, or elapsed playtime that unlocks online matches. It also does not establish a special online benefit for demo-transferred monsters or provide a universal subscription price. Those details should be treated as launch-day questions rather than filled in with speculation.
