How to unlock Echoes of Sekigahara
A post-launch guide updated October 2, 2026, says you do not need to finish the entire base-game campaign first. Complete these four main-story missions:

- The Old Inn
- The Way of Dual Katana
- The Tale of the Oni
- The Kitsune’s Fate
Then go to Yōtei’s Shadow Inn, speak with bounty broker Kojiro, and accept Nagato the Handsome from the bounty board. Follow the marked route through the marshlands into Ashoro Foothills. The region is described as closed until the bounty is active, so accept it before trying to ride directly to Ashoro. Player Atlas’s unlock guide gives the four-mission prerequisite and starting steps.
Access also depends on edition and territory. PlayStation’s September 3, 2026 announcement says the Complete Edition Upgrade for existing owners includes Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted; access began October 1, 2026, with the content available October 2 in some territories, including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. PlayStation also announced a physical Complete Edition release for October 1. Check the current availability and edition for your region rather than assuming the dated announcement reflects present retailer stock. PlayStation’s announcement
#1 Best Overall
- Sekigahara is a 3-hour block game based on the Japanese campaign waged in 1600. The 7-week war elevated Tokugawa Ieyasu to Shogun and unified Japan for 265 years.
- Sekigahara is designed to offer an historically authentic experience within an intuitive game mechanic that can be played in one sitting. Great effort has been taken to preserve a clean game mechanism. (Despite a healthy amount of historical detail, the ruleset is a brief 6 pages.)
- No dice are used; combat is decided with cards. The combination of army and motivation produces impact on the battlefield - armies without matching cards don't fight. Battles resolve quickly, but with suspense, tactical participation, and a wide range of possible outcomes.
- The initial setup is variable, so the situation is always fresh. Concealed information (blocks and cards) lends additional uncertainty. In this way the game feels like the actual campaign.
- From the designer (Matthew Calkins): "[Sekigahara] plays like poker sometimes. You know how strong you’ll be in a hypothetical battle, and your opponent knows how strong he/she will be, so you read each others’ actions to gauge whether you want to initiate it.
Follow the Ashoro story in order
The route below reflects a post-launch walkthrough’s named objectives and practical beats; it is not an official exhaustive mission catalog. Follow the active objective marker when local encounters vary.
- Opening route and wounded wolf: Follow the wolf trail and clear the Viper camp. When prompted, use the nearby Massive Weapon against the armored Viper, free the wolf, and travel with Nagato toward Ashoro Springs.
- Ashoro Springs: Clear the Viper occupation and speak to Kihei. The town bounty board directs you toward the Vipers and the Snake’s missing funds.
- Another Man’s Treasure: Follow the bounty board’s leads. For Umakichi the Bear Slayer, release the captured bear before defeating Umakichi, then question him. For Bunzaemon the Butcher, finish the confrontation and follow the steps to return food to Ashoro Springs. Speak with the Hot Spring Attendant when prompted to enter a Sekigahara memory.
- Snake’s Estate: Follow the food-cart tracks through the swamp. At the blocked gate, locate and break through the rotted wood. Search for clues inside; this is an investigation rather than simply a camp-clear objective.
- Ichizo the Toad: Find and defeat Ichizo in the estate, take his key, and use it on the Snake’s locked house. The clues point Atsu and Nagato toward Mount Akan.
- A Past and Present Battle: Follow the cart tracks into Mount Akan. If the route is blocked, stay within the mission area and use the alternate path. Free Nagato from the Black Guard, search the bodies for the note, and meet him near Hunter’s Rest Shrine.
- A Buried Promise: Collect the marked food and feed the Black Buck. Follow Nagato via the alternate climb and continue through the memory sequence. If you want the Free Bird trophy, free the Golden Bird during this section rather than leaving after defeating its captors.
- Dream’s End: Meet Nagato and take the bow he leaves on the ridge. Clear the Viper camp, interrogate a survivor, and inspect the cart evidence. Follow the caravan, use the high route to the retaining wall, clear its defenders, and pull the supporting logs with Nagato before the caravan passes. Protect the surviving gold on the pack horses, escape with Nagato, and defeat Kinsor the Ugly. Return to Ashoro Springs.
The walkthrough identifies Dream’s End as the close of the main Ashoro story; optional activities remain available afterward. The Ashoro walkthrough

What to do before the final story clear
Some trophy conditions are easier to attempt while hostile positions still contain enemies, archers, and intact traps. A trophy guide specifically recommends handling enemy- and trap-dependent requirements before clearing every hostile position. You can still return for other activities after Dream’s End.
- Disarm an intact Viper trap before it triggers for Not This Time.
- Get a kill with Call of the Pack; the wolf attack must deliver the final blow.
- Get three kills with Gambler’s Mark; the marked attack must get each final hit.
- Catch an arrow and return it so it kills an enemy for Return to Sender; catching an arrow or merely damaging an enemy is not enough.
Player Atlas’s trophy guide lists these conditions. They are guide-reported requirements, not official developer walkthrough instructions.

Optional completion: all 12 expansion trophies
Player Atlas’s 2026 trophy guide lists 12 Echoes of Sekigahara trophies. The checklist below separates story-linked awards from activities and combat conditions so you can track what remains without treating the whole sweep as necessary to finish the Ashoro story.
| Trophy | Requirement or useful detail |
|---|---|
| You Are My Ghost | Reach the story trophy tied to Atsu and Nagato’s Sekigahara memories. |
| Food for the People | Secure all four Viper Storehouses. Complete the supplies objective and fire the flare when prompted; defeating enemies alone may not finish it. |
| No More Snakes | Resolve the Viper conflict in Ashoro Foothills. |
| Unbreakable | Complete the named warrior encounter. The trophy guide describes a specific encounter, but its exact connection to a bounty sequence is not corroborated by an official source. |
| Free Bird | During A Buried Promise, clear the Vipers around the captive Golden Bird and interact with its cage. |
| Paths to Color | Purchase all five dye trade routes from the Colorful Dye Merchant. The requirement is for routes, not individual dyes. |
| Mother of Misfortune | Win three Zeni Hajiki games at Fortune’s Asobiya. A player report associates these games with the side tale A Mother’s Love; this association is not established by the trophy guide. |
| Hungry for More | Discover four recipes: Sweet Mushroom Stew, Savory Mushroom Stew, Aromatic Fish, and Savory Fish Stew. One player report says they appear after the story advances through a settlement/cooking sequence; treat that timing as reported, not a confirmed universal gate. |
| Handsome Yet Deadly | Get three kills with Gambler’s Mark; the marked attack needs the final hit. |
| Pack Hunter | Get a kill with Call of the Pack; the wolf attack needs the final hit. |
| Return to Sender | Catch and return an arrow so it kills an enemy. |
| Not This Time | Disarm an intact Viper trap before it is triggered. |
Two requirements remain uncertain beyond the guide’s stated conditions: a player report could not establish whether completing all available bounties is required for the story trophy, and no official source confirms the precise bounty sequence behind Unbreakable. Do not assume either dependency from the trophy list alone. Community reports

What the expansion covers
PlayStation described the expansion as spanning two periods of Atsu’s life: her time on the mainland in the Battle of Sekigahara and the present day. Its September 3, 2026 announcement places Nagato in Ezo and the Vipers in the previously unseen Ashoro Foothills, and mentions new enemy types, heavy weapons, mythic tales, abilities, armor sets, and cosmetics. Those details describe the expansion broadly; the step-by-step route above comes from secondary walkthroughs, not that announcement. PlayStation’s announcement
