To unlock a Samsung phone, contact the carrier that originally locked it and meet that carrier’s requirements. Samsung does not provide one universal carrier-unlock code. First check the phone’s lock status and original carrier, then follow that carrier’s eligibility and unlock process. Before switching, confirm that your exact Samsung model supports the destination carrier’s network and services.
What a carrier unlock does—and does not do
A carrier or SIM unlock removes a software restriction that can prevent a phone from attempting to activate on another carrier. T-Mobile describes this as disabling software that would prevent activation on another network, even if that network is technologically compatible; the definition appears in its Consumer Code, which reproduces CTIA Consumer Code principles.

Unlocking does not change the phone’s hardware, guarantee that another carrier will accept it, or ensure that every service works. A phone may support voice but not data on a different network. Check the destination carrier’s bring-your-own-device checker with the exact model or IMEI and confirm voice, data, and messaging support.

Check whether your Samsung phone is locked
Use the original carrier’s status checker
If you know which carrier sold or financed the phone, start with its account or support page. T-Mobile customers can sign in, select the line, and choose “Check device unlock status,” or use the T-Life/T-Mobile app and view “Device lock status.” T-Mobile warns that not every device works with every provider and recommends checking compatibility with the destination carrier. Check Samsung settings
Menu names and paths can vary by model and software version. For AT&T Samsung phones released after September 1, 2025, AT&T directs customers to Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network lock status. AT&T’s general Android instructions also describe checking the status under Settings > Connections > More connection settings. An “Unlocked” status indicates no carrier restrictions were detected; “Locked” indicates restrictions to the current carrier. See AT&T’s carrier-lock check instructions.
For AT&T Samsung phones released before September 1, 2025, check Settings > About phone > Software information and inspect “Service provider software version.” AT&T says:

- A value ending in ATT/ATT indicates the phone was originally from AT&T and can be submitted for unlocking.
- A value containing ATT but ending another way indicates it was unlocked before reaching AT&T.
- No ATT means the phone is not supported by AT&T’s unlock solutions; contact the original provider instead.
AT&T also describes a network-operator scan as a likelihood check: seeing only one carrier suggests the phone may be locked, while seeing several suggests it may be unlocked. Treat the scan as an indicator, not a definitive lock or compatibility test.

There is no single rule that applies to every U.S. carrier, Samsung model, or service type. Identify the original carrier, whether the line was prepaid or postpaid, the purchase date, any remaining device payments or contract terms, and the account’s standing. Lost, stolen, or fraud reports can also affect eligibility.

AT&T postpaid
AT&T’s wireless unlock page, last updated June 29, 2026, says a postpaid device must have been purchased more than 60 days ago, be paid in full with a zero installment balance, not be active on another AT&T account, and not be reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud. If the device is on the requester’s account, the bill must not be past due. Eligible Apple, Samsung, and Google devices unlock automatically once requirements are met. AT&T Prepaid
AT&T Prepaid has a different threshold: the phone must have 12 months of paid AT&T service, not be active on another AT&T account, and not be reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud. AT&T says eSIM users should request an unlock according to their device type. Use the same AT&T unlock page for the current request route.

T-Mobile
Check the line’s eligibility in your T-Mobile account or the T-Life/T-Mobile app. T-Mobile says eligible devices that support remote unlocking are automatically unlocked within two business days. Other eligible Samsung phones may offer an unlock option in Settings; availability depends on the device.
Verizon
Verizon’s policy depends on when the phone was purchased. Its support page, accessed October 3, 2026, says devices purchased before January 27, 2026 are locked for 60 days from purchase. Devices purchased on or after January 27, 2026 remain locked until the full device payment or contract terms are fulfilled.

For a device bought at full retail price, Verizon says it unlocks automatically when payment is made through a secure method. For the non-secure methods it identifies—Verizon Gift Card, paper check, bill credit, or a card payment by magnetic stripe or manual entry—the page says unlocking occurs automatically 35 days after payment. A device previously reported lost or stolen will not unlock until that report is cleared. Verizon says this locking policy does not apply to a phone brought to Verizon by the customer. Request or complete the unlock
- Confirm the original carrier. Check the phone’s account records, receipt, settings clues, or the carrier’s device-status tool. If the phone was previously unlocked, it may no longer be restricted by the carrier that sold it.
- Check the right eligibility category. Use the original carrier’s current policy for the device’s service type and purchase date. Resolve any unpaid balance, overdue account issue, or lost/stolen report that the policy identifies.
- Submit a request if required. Use the carrier’s official account, app, or unlock request route. Keep the device’s IMEI and account or purchase details available if requested. Do not assume that a Samsung-branded phone has a Samsung-issued unlock code.
- Use the Samsung unlock menu when available. For supported T-Mobile Samsung devices, open Settings > Connections > More Connection Settings > Network Unlock > Permanent Unlock. Wait for the process to finish, then restart the phone. If the option is missing or the process fails, use T-Mobile support rather than an unofficial unlock tool.
- Verify the result and compatibility. Check the status again, then use the destination carrier’s compatibility checker with the exact model or IMEI. Confirm the services you need before moving your SIM or service.
If the phone still will not unlock or connect
- No unlock option appears: The model may not support an on-device unlock flow, or the carrier may require an account request. Follow the original carrier’s process.
- The request is denied: Recheck the service category, purchase date, payment balance, account standing, and any lost/stolen or fraud flag against that carrier’s policy. Ask the carrier which specific requirement is unmet.
- The phone says “SIM Not Supported”: Verizon says this message can appear when a non-Verizon SIM is used in a locked device, though the wording can vary by manufacturer. Confirm the lock status with the carrier that imposed the restriction.
- The phone is unlocked but service is missing or limited: Check the exact model with the new carrier. An unlock removes a software restriction; it does not add network bands or guarantee compatible voice, data, or messaging service.
