How to Unlock a Samsung Galaxy S21 5G for Another Carrier

To unlock a Samsung Galaxy S21 5G for another carrier, first identify the carrier that sold or authorized the phone, check its lock status and eligibility, then request the unlock through that carrier. The new carrier cannot normally remove the original carrier’s lock. An unlock removes a network restriction; it does not guarantee that the S21 will support every feature or frequency on the new network.

What “unlock” means for a Galaxy S21 5G

This guide is about a carrier or SIM unlock: removing the restriction that can prevent the phone from using another carrier’s SIM or eSIM. It is different from unlocking the screen with a passcode, roaming on another provider while keeping your current carrier, or changing the bootloader or firmware. T-Mobile, for example, describes device unlocking as enabling use with another carrier and treats roaming as a separate service arrangement (T-Mobile device unlock support).

Unlocking changes the phone’s network restriction, not its hardware capabilities. The Galaxy S21 variant still needs to support the target network’s bands and technologies, and the carrier must accept its IMEI. An unlocked phone can therefore have limited service—or lack a feature you rely on—on a particular network.

Identify the carrier that controls the lock

Start with the company that sold or authorized the phone, not the carrier you plan to join. Check your original receipt, account records, or the carrier’s device-status tools. If you bought the S21 used, ask the seller which carrier it came from and whether it was already unlocked. A target carrier can check compatibility, but the original carrier is generally the one that decides whether its lock can be removed. T-Mobile directs owners of devices it did not sell or authorize to the carrier or manufacturer that sold the device (T-Mobile SIM Unlock Policy).

Check the S21 settings

Samsung’s S21 manual lists Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network unlock. Menu availability and wording can vary by carrier, so a missing option does not by itself prove that the phone is locked or unlocked. Use the carrier’s account status check as well. See the Samsung / AT&T S21 user manual for the menu and its carrier-variation caveat.

AT&T-origin S21: check the software information

For Samsung devices released before September 1, 2025, AT&T’s instructions use Settings > About phone > Software information > Service provider software version. AT&T says a value ending in ATT/ATT identifies a device originally from AT&T that can be submitted for an unlock; a value that contains ATT but ends differently indicates it was unlocked before coming to AT&T; if it does not contain ATT, contact the original provider. This is AT&T’s check for its Samsung devices, not a universal diagnostic for every S21 variant. Details are on AT&T’s unlock help page.

Check eligibility with the original carrier

Carriers set their own requirements. Common factors include whether the phone is paid off, how long it has had active service, whether the account is in good standing, and whether the device has been reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud. The thresholds below are the U.S. policy examples published by the carriers cited; policies can change, so confirm your account and the current terms before relying on a threshold.

Original carrier Published eligibility examples How to proceed
T-Mobile For postpaid, the device must have been active on the requesting line for at least 40 days; a device financed or leased through T-Mobile must be paid in full. For prepaid, the standard route requires 365 days since network activation. An alternative requires more than $100 in refills per line, more than 14 days since purchase, and no more than two completed unlocks per line in the prior 12 months. The device must be sold by T-Mobile, not reported lost, stolen, or blocked, and the associated account must be in good standing. Check status in the account or T-Life/T-Mobile app, then follow the carrier’s unlock process. See T-Mobile’s policy.
AT&T AT&T’s listed common requirements include purchase more than 60 days ago, device payoff, no lost/stolen/fraud report, and a current account. Its AT&T Prepaid requirements shown on the page include 12 months of paid service. Requirements can depend on account and plan. Use AT&T’s official unlock request process; the page also explains options for former customers without an active account. Review AT&T’s current requirements.
Verizon Under the policy effective January 27, 2026, postpaid devices bought directly from Verizon unlock automatically when purchased at full retail or when financing is paid in full, subject to lost/stolen status. Prepaid devices require 365 days of paid, active service before automatic unlock, subject to stolen/fraud exceptions. The policy notes possible delays for certain gift-card payments. Check the current policy and your account for timing or exceptions: Verizon device unlocking policy.

Request and complete the unlock

  1. Check the status. On T-Mobile, use Accounts > select line > Check device unlock status, or in the T-Life/T-Mobile app choose Manage, select the line, and view Device lock status. Other carriers have their own status and request flows; use the original carrier’s official support page.
  2. Resolve any unmet requirements. If the phone is financed, service time is short, or the account has a hold, ask the carrier what must be completed before it will process the request. If the carrier’s record is wrong, provide proof of purchase or payment through its official support channel.
  3. Submit the official request or follow its automatic-unlock instructions. T-Mobile says eligible devices that can be unlocked remotely are automatically unlocked within two business days; for other devices, it sends notification and next steps within that period. AT&T says eligible Samsung devices on an AT&T Wireless plan that meet its requirements should unlock automatically, while its official request process is available for eligible devices. Do not treat either carrier’s timing or process as a guarantee for another carrier.
  4. Complete any on-phone step the carrier specifies. The S21 manual’s Network unlock menu may be relevant, but carrier menus vary. Follow the instructions associated with your specific device and account rather than using an unofficial code or service.

If the carrier denies the request, ask which requirement is unmet and whether the device is associated with a different carrier or account. A new carrier cannot override the original carrier’s decision. Avoid third-party services promising an authorized unlock: the cited carrier processes direct owners to official carrier channels.

Verify the phone works on the network you want

Before switching, ask the target carrier to check the exact S21 model and IMEI, its supported frequency bands and technologies, coverage where you use the phone, and the voice, messaging, data, and other features you need. T-Mobile’s BYOD guidance recommends IMEI and frequency checks and warns that partial compatibility can mean reduced coverage or slower data (T-Mobile Consumer Code).

Once the target carrier confirms compatibility and the original carrier confirms the unlock, insert the new SIM or use the carrier’s eSIM activation flow. Test outgoing and incoming calls, text messages, mobile data, and any specific feature you depend on before cancelling the old service. If something does not work, check that activation completed, confirm the phone’s lock status with the original carrier, and ask the new carrier to troubleshoot the model, IMEI, and service configuration.

Unlocking versus switching: what to compare

A carrier unlock and network compatibility are separate checks. Before committing to a switch, compare these items with the prospective carrier:
