Moving to Europe does not automatically unlink your Facebook and Instagram accounts or erase information Meta already has. To separate Facebook and Instagram, remove one account from Accounts Centre; to preserve access safely, first export your data and replace any third-party logins that depend on Facebook. Messenger needs a separate decision: Meta documents specific options for people in the European Economic Area (EEA), but a new Messenger account does not inherit old chats or contacts.
Use this sequence: back up important information, secure independent sign-ins, check business access, separate connected accounts, then decide whether to keep, deactivate, or delete Facebook and how to handle Messenger. Menu names can vary by device, app version, language, and region; if a path differs, search Settings for Accounts Centre.
What does “unlink” mean?
Unlinking accounts is not the same as deleting them. Choose the action that matches what you want to change:
| Goal | Action | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Stop automatic sharing or other cross-account features | Turn off the relevant connected experiences in Accounts Centre. | Does not delete old posts or erase all data Meta has processed. |
| Separate Facebook and Instagram | Remove an account from Accounts Centre. | Does not delete either account or necessarily erase past messages, posts, contacts, or activity. |
| Stop using Facebook temporarily | Deactivate Facebook. | Does not necessarily disable Messenger; access depends on the account arrangement. |
| Leave Facebook permanently | Delete Facebook. | Does not ensure that messages already delivered to other people disappear from their inboxes. |
| Clear some past activity shared by other businesses and websites | Use Meta’s “Your activity off Meta technologies” controls to disconnect past activity. | Does not guarantee that future collection stops or that you will see fewer ads. |
| Start a separate Messenger identity | Create a new Messenger account if that option is available to you. | Old chats and contacts do not transfer to the new account, according to Meta. |
Accounts Centre can include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Meta accounts; WhatsApp availability varies by location. Meta says at least two accounts are needed to set up an Accounts Centre and enable connected experiences, and only one Facebook account can be in an Accounts Centre at a time. See Meta’s Accounts Centre overview and its account-removal instructions.

Back up your accounts and protect access first
Before changing account links, deleting an account, or creating a new Messenger identity, download anything you may need and make sure you can still sign in without relying on Facebook.
Export information you want to keep
In Accounts Centre, open Your information and permissions and use the export or access tools. Meta says information can be exported to a device or an external service. Review the available categories for both Facebook and Instagram; depending on the account, useful items may include photos, videos, posts, messages, and account records. If you have additional Facebook profiles, check whether they need separate handling. Meta’s instructions are in Manage your information and permissions in Accounts Centre.
Replace Facebook Login on other services
List websites and apps where you sign in with Facebook. For each service, sign in and add an independent email-and-password login or another supported sign-in method; set up an authenticator app or security key where available, and save recovery codes. Confirm the alternative works before removing Facebook Login. Meta warns that deleting Facebook can prevent access to third-party services registered with Facebook Login, and recovery may require contacting those services. See Meta’s Facebook deletion guidance.

Check professional and business access
If you manage Facebook Pages, Instagram professional accounts, ads, shops, catalogs, a Meta Business portfolio, or publishing tools, verify ownership, administrator access, and recovery methods before unlinking anything. A personal account’s Accounts Centre connection is distinct from some Page, business, catalog, and third-party integrations. Confirm the relevant business settings separately so you do not remove the only account able to administer an asset.

Instagram app path
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu in the upper-right corner, then tap Accounts Centre.
- Scroll to Accounts.
- Tap Remove beside the Instagram account you want to separate.
- Tap Remove account, then Continue.
- Tap Yes, finish removing.
This is Meta’s documented Instagram unlinking path and disconnects Instagram from Facebook and other social networks for the shared connection. Follow the steps in Meta’s Instagram unlinking instructions.
General Accounts Centre path
In Facebook or Instagram, open Accounts Centre → Accounts, choose the profile to separate, and select Remove account. On Facebook desktop, Meta lists this path: Profile picture → Settings & privacy → Settings → Accounts Centre → Accounts → Remove. The exact location can vary; consult Meta’s Facebook Accounts Centre instructions if the labels differ.

- Designed for calls on the go. A long-lasting battery and integrated handle make it easy to move from room to room.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.

- Great sound anywhere. Listen to music with a speaker that can fill any room. Doubles as a portable Bluetooth speaker around the home.
After removal, check that the accounts no longer appear together under Accounts Centre → Accounts. Then review connected experiences, including automatic sharing, cross-account login, and profile synchronization, in Meta’s connected-experiences settings. Removing an account is the clearer separation step, but it does not by itself remove third-party logins, business links, or historical data.
Multiple accounts and exceptions
If you have several Instagram accounts linked to one Facebook profile, check each Instagram account individually rather than assuming that removing one separates all of them. Meta also says an AI account created through Instagram may need to remain in the same Accounts Centre as Instagram; removing Instagram can prompt an option to delete that AI account. If you want to keep the AI account, Meta suggests removing Facebook or another account instead. Review the warning shown during removal and see Meta’s removal help.
What happens to Messenger?
Messenger is not simply another account that can always be removed from Accounts Centre. The available choice depends on the account and location. Meta’s help page documents the options below for the European Economic Area; do not assume the same choices apply throughout every country Meta includes in its broader European Region.

- Move and talk freely with Smart Camera: With Smart Camera, you don’t have to worry about being out of frame. Whether you’re moving around the kitchen, prepping dinner or chasing the kids through the living room, Smart Camera adjusts to follow the action. And as more people enter a room, Smart Camera automatically widens to keep everyone in view, so you don’t miss a moment
- Private by design: Facebook doesn't listen to, view or keep the contents of your Portal video calls. Calls on Portal are encrypted, so conversations stay between you and those you're calling. You can also completely disable the camera and microphone with a single tap, or block the camera lens with the camera cover provided
- Connect with friends, even if they don't have Portal: Easily call friends and family on Messenger — calls can be made seamlessly to and from smartphones and tablets. And you can bring up to six other people into a group call
- Alexa built-in: Portal has Alexa built-in, so you can ask a question, set a timer, add items to your shopping list, control your smart home or more. Just ask
- Experience more together: With Portal, story time will never be the same. With music, animation and augmented reality effects, Portal lets you become some of your children’s favorite characters as you read along to well-loved stories. And if friends or family also have Portal, you can listen to your favorite music together as if you were in the same room, without delays or feedback
| Keep the existing Facebook-linked Messenger | Create a new Messenger account |
|---|---|
| Meta documents an arrangement in which Facebook is deactivated while Messenger remains usable through the existing Facebook account. | The new account is a separate identity and logs you out of the current account. |
| Existing chats and contacts remain available through that account; some Facebook-powered Messenger features may remain available. | Old chats and the contact list do not transfer. You must invite people to connect again. |
| Requires keeping the Facebook account in the deactivated-except-Messenger arrangement. | Some Facebook-powered features are not available. |
Meta’s current options are described in Options to use Messenger without a Facebook account. If message history matters, confirm the option presented for your account before deactivating or deleting Facebook. A newly created Messenger account is not a seamless migration.
What changes when you move to Europe?
“Europe” is not one uniform Meta product region. Meta defines a European Region for its services and says people living there receive services from Meta Platforms Ireland Limited. Its definition includes EU countries and other listed territories, including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The EEA, which Meta names for the Messenger choice above, is a distinct scope. Check Meta’s European Region definition rather than treating every European country as covered by every feature.
Meta’s public help information describes the region in terms of where a person lives; it does not document a universal manual “move account to Europe” switch. A temporary visit, VPN connection, roaming SIM, or profile-city edit is not documented as a guaranteed way to change an account’s region. Moving also does not automatically unlink accounts, delete historical information, or migrate data into a new account.

Review location information after the move
Country detection is not the only location-related information to review. Meta says it may receive location information through device settings, profile details, posts, network connections, and activity across its products. Check device location permissions, your Facebook profile city, Instagram location tags, Marketplace address, locations attached to posts, reels, and stories, and recent login activity. Meta explains its controls in Manage your location information settings, Learn how to manage your location, and What location information does Meta receive?
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use GDPR rights for a specific privacy request
Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, people in scope may have rights to request access to personal data, correct it, seek erasure, restrict processing, object to processing, or obtain certain data in a portable format. These rights are conditional, not a button that automatically clears an account when you move. Erasure, for example, may be limited where information must be retained by law or is needed for legal claims, among other exceptions. See the European Commission’s information for individuals and Your Europe’s GDPR guidance.
Data portability is not account migration. Where the legal conditions apply, portability concerns receiving certain personal data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format or transmitting it to another controller. It does not guarantee that another service can import your Meta chats, social graph, username, recommendations, or encrypted chat history intact.
Reduce other cross-account and off-Meta connections
Clear past off-Meta activity
Meta’s Your activity off Meta technologies control can disconnect past activity shared by businesses and organizations through tools such as Meta Pixel or Facebook Login. Clearing it may log you out of some apps and websites, so make sure their independent sign-ins work first. It does not guarantee that future information collection stops or reduce the number of ads you see. Follow Meta’s instructions for disconnecting past off-Meta activity.
Review ongoing settings
- Turn off connected experiences you no longer want, including automatic sharing, cross-account login, or synchronized profile information.
- Review third-party apps and websites that use Facebook Login, and revoke integrations only after confirming an alternative sign-in works.
- Check contact-upload or contact-sync controls in the relevant apps if you do not want address books uploaded.
- Review location permissions on your device and location tags or addresses saved in Meta profiles and content.
- Check advertising and privacy settings for the controls available to your account and location; unlinking alone does not eliminate personalization or data collection.
Deactivate or delete Facebook only if that is your goal
You do not need to deactivate or delete Facebook simply to unlink it from Instagram. If you want to proceed, Meta’s Facebook route is Accounts Centre → Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion. Deactivation is reversible; Meta documents that Messenger may remain available through the deactivated-except-Messenger arrangement. Deletion is different: it ends Messenger access tied to that Facebook account.
Meta says deletion can be canceled within 30 days, while noting that the cancellation period varies by region. It says deletion of posted information may take up to 90 days; copies may remain in backup storage or for legal, terms-enforcement, or harm-prevention reasons. Messages already delivered to other people may remain visible in their inboxes. Check Meta’s deletion instructions before making an irreversible choice.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot separation problems
- Accounts Centre is hard to find: Search Settings for “Accounts Centre” in the Facebook or Instagram app, or use Facebook’s desktop Settings path above. Labels can differ by version, platform, language, and region.
- The wrong account appears: Confirm which Facebook and Instagram profiles are signed in, then inspect Accounts Centre → Accounts before removing anything. If you have multiple Instagram accounts, verify each one separately.
- A Page or professional account still seems linked: Check Page, business portfolio, ad, catalog, and third-party publishing settings separately; personal Accounts Centre separation may not remove those connections.
- A third-party app stops working: Use that service’s password-reset or account-recovery process, or contact its support. Facebook deletion can break access where Facebook Login was the only sign-in method.
- Messenger history is missing: Check whether you signed into the original Facebook-linked Messenger account or created a new account. Meta says chats and contacts do not transfer to the new identity.
- You are only visiting Europe: Meta describes its European Region in terms of residence, but does not publish a deterministic manual region-migration process. Do not treat a trip or a location-setting change as proof that the account’s service region has changed.
Relocation checklist
- Export the Facebook and Instagram information you may need from Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions.
- Set up independent sign-in and recovery methods for important third-party services that use Facebook Login.
- Confirm administrator and recovery access for Pages, professional accounts, business tools, shops, catalogs, and publishing services.
- Remove the selected Facebook or Instagram profile from Accounts Centre if you want the accounts separated.
- Verify connected experiences, cross-posting, synchronized profile details, and cross-account login settings.
- Decide whether you want Facebook active, deactivated, or deleted; do not delete it solely to unlink Instagram.
- For Messenger, choose between the existing Facebook-linked identity and a new account only after weighing the loss of history and contacts with a new identity.
- Review device location permissions, profile locations, tags, and privacy controls after establishing residence.
- If you want to exercise a GDPR right, identify the specific data or processing concern and use the applicable request process; do not expect account separation to perform that request for you.
