Uninstalling removes the game installation, but it does not guarantee that every related file disappears. Steam Cloud data, local saves, configuration files, Workshop content, updates and custom files can be stored separately. Check those items before deleting anything manually, especially if you may reinstall the game.

How to uninstall a Steam game after a free weekend
The normal one-game removal process takes place from the Library entry, not from Windows’ Apps list or a folder browser. Use this procedure when you want to remove one title while leaving Steam and your other games installed:
- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Find the game you installed for the free weekend. The title can remain in your Library even after it is no longer installed, so identify the correct entry before continuing.
- Right-click the game in your library list.
- Choose Manage, then select Uninstall.
- Read the confirmation prompt and confirm. Steam removes the installed game files from that library folder.
Leave Steam open until the operation finishes. Interrupting a file operation can leave the client refreshing its library state, so verify the result afterward rather than immediately deleting folders yourself.

This is the correct route for removing one title. It is different from uninstalling the Steam client itself, which can affect every installed game. You do not need to remove Steam, delete a registry entry, or empty an entire library folder to reclaim the space used by a single free-weekend game.
Verify that the game was removed and identify the space it used
After the uninstall finishes, go to Steam > Settings > Storage. This page shows your Steam library locations and the games installed in each one. Check the library that contained the free-weekend title and confirm that it no longer appears as installed.
Storage is a better check than the Library list alone. A Library list is also a catalog of games available to install, while Storage is intended to show what is occupying the selected library. If the title is still shown in the Library but offers an install action instead of a play action, that usually indicates that Steam sees it as available rather than installed; use Storage to verify.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Write down the library location before you start any optional cleanup. Many people have more than one Steam library, and the game may not have been installed on the drive they expected. Knowing the exact library also prevents accidentally examining or deleting another game’s folder.
Do not expect a universal number of gigabytes. The space recovered depends on that game’s installation size, the library location, and any additional files stored elsewhere. A large game may free substantial space; a small game may recover very little. Download size, installed size and recovered capacity are not interchangeable measurements.
Steam also notes that automatic updates, saved games and custom content can change disk usage independently of the main installation. A patch, optional content package or local profile may have changed the before-and-after figures. Compare the Storage page and the operating system’s free-space display after the uninstall instead of promising yourself a particular amount of space.
If the game still appears in your Library
A title can remain visible in your Library after its files are removed because Steam is also showing games available to install. Look for an install option rather than a play option, then use the Storage page to confirm whether local files remain. Do not delete a whole library folder merely because the game is still listed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Storage still lists the title as installed, allow Steam to finish any pending operation and refresh the page. Check that you selected the same library in which the title was installed; a second library on another drive can make it look as though the uninstall did nothing.
If Windows or macOS reports less free space than expected
First allow Steam to finish the uninstall, then refresh the Storage view and your operating system’s free-space reading. Operating-system displays can take a moment to update. If the game is gone from the selected library but the drive has not recovered all the expected capacity, check for separately stored saves, Workshop or custom content, update files, and other data associated with the title.
Do not turn an unexpected number into a reason to erase random folders. Steam does not promise that every separately stored file is removed by the individual-game uninstall command. Identify a leftover by the game’s documentation or a clearly named folder before deciding whether it is safe to remove.

Uninstalling versus moving the game
Uninstalling is not the only way to clear space on a particular drive. Steam’s Storage settings can move an installed game to another Steam library folder. Moving keeps the installation available, while uninstalling removes it from the current library.
| Choice | What happens | Use it when | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall | The installed game files are removed from their Steam library. | You do not need the game installed now and want to reclaim its space. | Check local saves and other data before deleting anything outside the game folder. |
| Move | Steam transfers the installed game to another Steam library folder. | You need space on one drive but have adequate capacity in another Steam library. | The destination must be a suitable library location with enough free space. |
To move a title, open Steam > Settings > Storage, select the library and game, and use Steam’s move option to choose another library folder. Check the destination before confirming: it must be a Steam library location with enough capacity for the installed files. A move changes the drive or folder that stores the game; it does not reduce your total storage use.
Moving is useful after a free weekend when you might still play the game, but your system drive is crowded. It avoids a new download and preserves the installed files. If your goal is to remove the files entirely because you no longer intend to play, uninstalling is the more direct choice.
Steam cautions against using an external hard drive for Steam and its games because connection and performance problems can affect play. A second internal drive or another stable library location is a safer destination when available. Do not treat an external disk as a universal fix for a full system drive, especially if it can disconnect while Steam is running.
Will uninstalling a Steam game delete your saves?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Steam Cloud can store saves and other user data, but support is game-specific: the developer decides whether the game uses Steam Cloud and which files it synchronizes. A game without Steam Cloud support, or a file excluded from synchronization, may keep its only copy locally.
Steam Support identifies DocumentsMy Games as a common Windows location for saves and profiles from third-party games that are not stored on Steam Cloud. That is only a common location, not a guarantee. Developers can use different folders, and games on macOS or Linux may use different paths. Some games also keep settings, profiles or screenshots alongside saves, so a folder’s name alone does not tell you which files are safe to remove.
Before uninstalling, check whether your progress is local
- Open the game’s Steam store page and look for its stated Steam Cloud support.
- Check the developer’s support documentation for the game’s save location and synchronization behavior.
- If the game is running, close it normally so pending saves can finish writing.
- If your progress matters, make a separate copy of the documented save folder before uninstalling.
- Note whether you use more than one computer or operating system; a cloud-enabled game may synchronize only the files the developer selected, not every local customization.
Do not assume that seeing a Steam Cloud feature means every profile, settings file or custom save is synchronized. The developer controls the file list. Conversely, do not assume that an uninstall erases local saves; many are outside the installed game directory.
How to make a cautious local backup on Windows
- Find the save location in the game’s developer documentation. If no specific path is given, inspect
DocumentsMy Gamesfor a folder named after the game, without deleting anything. - Copy the relevant game folder to another drive or a clearly named backup folder. Keep the original in place while you verify that the copy contains the expected files.
- Keep the copy until you have reinstalled the game and confirmed that your progress is available.
- Only then decide whether the backup is still needed. If you retain it, label it with the game name and date so it is not confused with a newer save.
Backing up is optional when you are certain the game synchronizes all required data, but it is the safest approach when the game’s storage behavior is unclear. Avoid deleting an entire Documents folder or unrelated game folders while looking for leftovers. If the developer supplies a platform-specific procedure, follow it rather than applying a generic Windows path to macOS or Linux.
What can remain after the main uninstall?
Save files and profiles
Local saves, profiles, screenshots or settings may be stored outside the Steam library. They can be useful when you reinstall, so preserve them unless you have confirmed that you no longer need them. Their exact location is chosen by the developer. A clean uninstall of the program therefore does not necessarily mean a clean deletion of every personal file.
If you are finished with the game permanently, you can make a deliberate decision about those files after checking what they contain. If you may return during another promotion, keeping a small backup is safer than trying to recreate progress later.

Workshop and custom content
Mods, downloaded Workshop items and other custom content can occupy space separately from the core installation. Whether Steam removes them with the game depends on how the game and content are organized. Treat unfamiliar folders as data to identify, not as automatic cleanup targets.
Custom content can also be valuable independently of the game installation. If you created or downloaded a configuration, mod or other add-on that you may reuse, document its location before removing it. Do not assume that Steam Cloud includes Workshop subscriptions, mod settings or manually copied files unless the developer specifically says so.
Updates and changing files
Steam’s disk-use guidance notes that automatic updates can change the amount of storage a game consumes. A patch may have created temporary or additional files before you removed the title, and another installed game may have updated at the same time. Compare the Storage page before and after the uninstall rather than relying on the game’s advertised download size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the free weekend ended while Steam was downloading or validating an update, wait for that activity to finish before judging the final free-space number. The title’s displayed size can also differ from the amount of space a file system reports because related data may be elsewhere.
Other library files
A Steam library contains more than one game folder. If you browse the library manually, remove only files you can positively associate with the uninstalled title. Do not delete shared redistributables, another game’s folder, or Steam’s library metadata just to force a larger space reading.
When in doubt, stop at the Storage page and the game’s documentation. Steam’s built-in uninstall command is safer than broad manual deletion because it knows which installed files belong to that title.
Safe cleanup after uninstalling
- Confirm in Settings > Storage that the title is no longer installed.
- Note which Steam library held the game and which drive it occupies.
- Check the game’s documented save and profile locations before touching files outside that library.
- Preserve any local data you may need for a future reinstall.
- Identify Workshop, mod or custom files by name and location; remove only clearly identified leftovers if you no longer want them.
- Refresh the Storage page and your operating system’s free-space display.
- Keep any backup until a later reinstall proves that your progress and settings are available.
There is no supported universal cleanup folder that should be deleted for every Steam game. Game-specific files vary, and aggressive manual deletion can remove progress or settings that Steam Cloud does not restore. A cleanup utility is not required for this task and cannot reliably know which game-specific files you still need.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Deleting the game folder before checking saves
The installation folder is an obvious target, but saves may be elsewhere and may not be synchronized. Check the store page and developer documentation first, then back up local data that matters. Removing the program files first does not make a later save search easier.
Confusing an available game with an installed game
Steam can show a game in your Library even when no local files remain. Use the Storage page to check installation state instead of treating the library listing alone as proof that disk space is still occupied.
Expecting the advertised download size to equal recovered space
Download size, installed size and the space recovered by uninstalling are not necessarily identical. Updates, optional content, saves and custom files can alter the result. Measure the actual drive before and after, and allow Steam and the operating system to refresh.

Moving when you actually wanted to delete
A move frees space on one drive but keeps the installation on another. Make sure the destination is a stable Steam library with enough room and that retaining the files is your intention. Total storage use will not fall after a move.

Steam warns that uninstalling the client removes installed game content unless the steamapps folder is moved elsewhere first. That warning applies to removing Steam itself, not to the normal procedure for one game.
Deleting an entire library to solve a one-game problem
A library can contain several games and shared files. Removing the whole folder can damage other installations and metadata. Use the individual title’s uninstall command, then inspect only clearly identified leftovers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if you reinstall the game later?
Reinstalling downloads the game files again into a Steam library. If the game uses Steam Cloud and the relevant files were synchronized, Steam may restore them after you sign in and launch the game. If the game used local saves, copy your backup back to the location specified by the developer after installation, following that game’s instructions.
Keep local backups until you have verified the restored progress in-game. A successful reinstall of the program does not prove that every save, mod or configuration file was preserved. Check a known save, profile or settings change before discarding your backup.
Recommended Free Tools
If the game has changed its save format between the free weekend and the later reinstall, consult the developer’s instructions before replacing files. Do not overwrite a newly created save until you know which copy contains the progress you want.
Questions readers commonly ask
How do I uninstall a Steam game after a free weekend?
In the Steam Library, right-click the game, choose Manage > Uninstall, and confirm. Then check Settings > Storage to verify that the title is no longer installed.
How do I free up space after uninstalling a Steam game?
Use the built-in uninstall command first, refresh Steam’s Storage page and check the operating system’s free-space display. If the recovered amount is smaller than expected, investigate documented saves, custom content and update files rather than deleting random folders.
Will uninstalling a Steam game delete my saves?
Not necessarily. Steam Cloud support and the synchronized file list are selected by the developer. Local saves may remain outside the installation folder, often under DocumentsMy Games on Windows, but paths vary. Check the game’s documentation and back up important data.
Can I keep the game installed but free space on my main drive?
Yes. In Settings > Storage, move the game to another Steam library folder. This preserves the installation but does not reduce total storage use. Steam advises against relying on an external hard drive because connection and performance issues can affect games.
Best Value
Why is the game still listed after I uninstall it?
The Library is also a list of games available to install. An install button can indicate that the local files are gone. Confirm the state in Storage rather than removing a library folder.
Should I delete leftover folders manually?
Only when you can positively identify them and have checked for saves, profiles or custom content you may need. There is no universal folder that is safe to remove for every Steam game.
Does uninstalling Steam remove all my games?
Uninstalling the Steam client is different from uninstalling one game. Steam warns that client removal deletes installed game content unless you move the steamapps folder elsewhere first. Use the game’s Library menu when you intend to remove only one title.
