Confirm the prompt. Steam deletes that demo’s local installation and, according to Steam’s 2024 documentation, automatically removes the uninstalled demo from your library.
Do not choose Manage > Remove from account unless you also want to remove the demo entitlement. That is a separate account-level action and is not required to recover disk space.

The safest way to uninstall one Steam demo
- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Locate the demo you installed.
- Right-click the demo’s entry.
- Choose Manage, then Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal and wait while Steam deletes the local content.
The command removes the demo’s installed program files, not Steam itself and not the installation files for your other games. The amount of space recovered depends on the individual demo; there is no single standard demo size.

Steam News documentation from 2024 states that “when a demo is uninstalled, it will automatically get removed from your library.” If you only want to reclaim storage, this is the correct command to use.

Uninstalling a demo versus removing it from your account
Steam presents two different cleanup actions under the same Manage menu. They solve different problems, so select the one that matches your goal.

Steamworks documentation describes Manage > Remove from account as the explicit way to remove a demo from an account. Treat that as the stronger cleanup step: it can affect whether you can access the demo later. For a storage-only cleanup, use Uninstall and leave the entitlement alone.
Step-by-step: remove an installed demo in Steam
1. Open the Library view
Start Steam and select Library in the client’s main navigation. The demo must be installed on that computer for Steam to offer a local uninstall action. If you have several library locations, the client still manages the title through this same Library interface.

Use the Library list or search field to locate the demo. Demo names can resemble the full game’s name, so check the entry carefully before opening its context menu. The objective is to remove only the demo you selected, not the full game or another item with a similar title.
3. Choose Manage, then Uninstall
Right-click the demo, open Manage, and select Uninstall. Steam asks you to confirm. Accept the prompt and let the client finish deleting the local content instead of closing Steam midway through the operation.
4. Wait for the client to complete the deletion
When the process finishes, the installed demo files are removed. Steam’s documented behavior is that the demo is also removed from your library automatically. You do not need to delete a folder manually to make that happen.

5. Repeat for other demos
If you installed several demos during a festival or event, repeat the same right-click path for each one. Steam does not provide a single “uninstall every demo” command in the documented workflow, so handle each installed demo individually and verify the title before confirming.
Check how much space you recovered
Steam’s storage manager can show where your library is installed and help you manage additional locations. Open Settings, then Storage. The Storage page shows the default installation drive, lets you add another library path with the + button, and provides a Move feature for existing games.
Use this page after uninstalling if you want to inspect library usage or decide where future downloads should go. The page is also useful when a computer has more than one drive: you can create another installation path rather than removing games simply because the default drive is full.
The exact space returned by a demo depends on that demo’s files. Steam does not publish one universal size figure, and the space shown by the client can differ from the size of a download because installed data and temporary files are measured differently during installation and updates.
Why a demo may still be visible
The normal result after Uninstall
Steam’s current documentation says an uninstalled demo is removed from the library automatically. If you used Manage > Uninstall and the client has completed the operation, the demo should no longer appear as an installed library item.

An uninstalled demo and a demo removed from an account are not the same state. If your goal is to remove the entitlement itself, right-click the demo, choose Manage, and select Remove from account. That is the documented account-level command.

If Steam’s local metadata is stale
Steam Support documents clearing the download cache as a way to flush locally cached configuration data when the client’s download or library metadata behaves incorrectly. Clearing that cache requires signing in to Steam again afterward, so make sure you know your account credentials and have access to any required sign-in verification before using it.
Use the cache-clearing command only for a client-state problem. It is not a substitute for the normal uninstall command and should not be your first step when Steam has already removed the demo correctly.
Do not uninstall Steam when you only want to remove a demo
The client’s Uninstall Steam process is much broader than removing one demo. Steam Support warns that the process removes Steam and any installed game content from the machine. Selecting it to solve a single-demo storage problem can therefore delete the local installations of your full games as well.
Windows: preserve the steamapps folder before removing Steam
If you intentionally need to uninstall Steam on Windows but want to keep installed game data, Steam’s support guidance says to exit Steam and move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before uninstalling the client. The folder contains the installed content Steam uses for its games. Preserve it before proceeding, then reinstall Steam and point the client to the library location as appropriate.
This precaution applies to a full client removal, not to the ordinary demo workflow. For a single demo, stay inside the Library context menu and use Manage > Uninstall.
Mac: dragging Steam to the Trash is not a complete uninstall
On macOS, dragging the Steam application to the Trash does not remove every part of the installation. Steam identifies Library/Application Support/Steam as part of the installation and advises retaining the SteamApps folder when game data must be preserved.

If the objective is only to reclaim space from one demo, do not remove that support directory. Use the Steam client’s Library command so the local files and Steam’s library state stay synchronized.
Protect save files and cloud progress
Uninstalling a demo’s program files is different from deleting save data. Avoid manually removing save folders simply because you are clearing the demo installation.
Steamworks documentation describes an optional developer-controlled setting that lets a demo share cloud storage with the full application. When a developer enables that arrangement, a saved game from the demo can be stored in the full game’s cloud storage so progress may carry forward if the full game is purchased. The setting is not universal: each developer decides whether the demo and full application use shared cloud storage.
Before deleting any local save folders, check the individual game’s documented behavior and whether cloud synchronization is enabled. If you want to keep progress, uninstall only through Steam and leave save data alone unless you have confirmed where that data is stored and whether it is safely synchronized.

Large demo events can leave a library crowded with short-term installs. A controlled cleanup avoids deleting the wrong title.

- Open Library and search for the first demo you no longer need.
- Open its context menu and confirm that the entry is the demo, not the full game.
- Choose Manage > Uninstall and wait for Steam to finish.
- Move to the next demo and repeat the same sequence.
- Open Settings > Storage after the batch to review the affected installation drive.
- If a title remains visible unexpectedly, determine whether you performed an uninstall or whether you intended the separate Remove from account action.
Do not begin this process by deleting folders in File Explorer or Finder. Manual deletion can leave Steam’s library records out of sync, while the supported uninstall command removes the local content and updates the client together.

Choosing the right cleanup action
You only need free disk space
Choose Manage > Uninstall. It removes the local demo files and is the least disruptive option for your Steam account.
You never want the demo associated with your account
Choose Manage > Remove from account and understand that this changes the account entitlement, not just the files on one computer. Use it when account cleanup is the goal.
You are replacing or repairing the Steam client
Follow Steam’s platform-specific preservation guidance first. On Windows, move steamapps outside the Steam directory after exiting Steam. On Mac, retain SteamApps inside Library/Application Support/Steam when installed game data must survive. A full client uninstall is not a demo-management shortcut.

Uninstall the program through Steam but do not manually erase save folders. Cloud handoff to the full game depends on an optional configuration made by the developer, so verify the particular title’s behavior before taking additional action.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Choosing Uninstall Steam instead of the demo’s Uninstall command: cancel the operation if possible. A full Steam uninstall can remove all installed game content.
- Using Remove from account to recover storage: account removal is unnecessary for disk cleanup. Use the demo’s local Uninstall command instead.
- Deleting the demo folder manually first: reinstall or repair through Steam’s client workflow so the library state can be synchronized.
- Deleting save folders along with the demo: stop and check the game’s save and cloud behavior before removing personal data.
- Assuming every demo shares saves with its full game: shared cloud storage is optional and developer-controlled, not a guaranteed Steam-wide feature.
- Clearing the download cache without preparing to sign in: Steam requires a new sign-in after the cache is cleared.
What to expect after cleanup
After a successful demo uninstall, the local files for that demo are gone, the occupied storage is available to the operating system, and Steam’s documented behavior is to remove the uninstalled demo from the library. Your other games remain installed because you acted on the demo’s own context menu rather than the Steam client’s uninstall option.
If you later decide to play the demo again and it is still offered by its publisher, an uninstall generally leaves reinstallation possible. Removing the demo from the account is a different, stronger decision and should be reserved for cases where you want the entitlement changed as well as the local files.
