The safest way to remove a Gears of War: E-Day mod is to undo it through the same mod manager or installer that added it, then use your PC storefront’s file-repair feature if the game still behaves as modified. Back up saves and any files you deliberately edited first. The Xbox app’s documented Verify and Repair process warns that unbacked-up mods and saves will not be retained; Steam has a game-specific E-Day support route, but its current verification labels should be checked in the live client rather than copied from an unverified guide.
Start with the storefront and installation method
Before changing anything, establish two facts:
- Are you launching E-Day through the Xbox app for PC or through Steam?
- Did you install the mod with a manager/installer, or did you copy files manually?
Those answers determine the safest rollback. A mod manager normally knows which files it added and can remove them without touching the base installation. A manual installation may have replaced original files, in which case storefront repair is safer than guessing which files to delete.

Close the game and the storefront before removing files. Do not remove a folder simply because its name contains “mod,” “pak,” or “backup.” The official guidance does not provide an authoritative E-Day file list or universal folder path, and paths can differ by storefront, edition and installation location.

Make a backup before using any repair command or deleting anything. Copy your save-data folder to a separate location such as an external drive or a clearly named folder on your desktop. If you changed configuration files, key bindings, accessibility settings, screenshots or other personal files, preserve those separately as well.

Use a backup that is independent of the game directory. A copy inside the installation folder can be removed by a repair, uninstall or reinstall. Keep the original backup until you have launched the clean game, loaded a save successfully and confirmed that your settings are acceptable.
The Xbox app warning is explicit: “You will then receive a pop-up warning that you will not retain any mods or game saves that are not backed up.” Bethesda Support presents that warning as part of its general Xbox app repair instructions. Treat it as a real data-loss warning, not as a routine confirmation.
Remove the mod through its own manager or installer
When a mod manager was used
- Open the same manager used to install the E-Day mod.
- Disable the mod, then use the manager’s uninstall, remove or restore-original-files command.
- If several mods are active, remove them one at a time or use the manager’s complete profile cleanup, depending on its documentation.
- Launch the game once without repairing it. If the mod is gone and the game starts normally, stop here; a repair is not needed.
Manager-specific instructions take priority because the manager may maintain a manifest, redirect files or create a separate profile. Removing files by hand after a manager has altered them can leave an incomplete installation.

When an installer added the mod
Run the installer again only if its documentation provides an uninstall or restore option. Select that option rather than reinstalling over the top. Some installers keep original files in a backup area; others replace files directly. Do not assume that deleting the installer’s visible files reverses a replacement.
When files were copied manually
Find the mod author’s removal instructions and follow them exactly. Preserve any file you cannot identify. If no reliable removal procedure exists, do not guess at paths: use the storefront’s repair or verification function instead. A repair can replace altered game files with the storefront’s current versions without requiring you to identify every changed file.

- Open the Xbox app and select My Library.
- Select Gears of War: E-Day.
- Open the game’s … (ellipsis) menu and choose Manage.
- Open the Files tab.
- Choose Verify and Repair.
- Read the warning. Continue only after you have backed up saves and any files you want to keep.
- Wait for verification and repair to finish before launching the game.
The Xbox app guidance says the game can be launched after verification completes. Repair is intended to restore installed files; it is not a mod manager and does not preserve unbacked-up modifications. If the app shows a different label or no repair control, do not substitute a random folder deletion. Use the current in-app help or official support route for that installation.

- Modified or missing base-game files may be replaced with the storefront’s versions.
- Unbacked-up mods may disappear.
- Unbacked-up saves may not be retained, according to the warning shown by the Xbox app.
- Your separate backup remains available for selective restoration after the clean launch.
After repair, launch E-Day with every mod manager disabled. Check the title screen, menus and a disposable save first. Only then restore personal configuration files one at a time; restoring a modified gameplay file can reintroduce the problem.
Steam: verify through the live client, not a guessed recipe
An E-Day technical-support entry point exists on Steam, but the official material does not establish a detailed, current, game-specific verification sequence. Steam changes client labels and layout, so avoid copying a click-by-click path from another game.
- Open Steam and select E-Day in your Library.
- Open the game’s Properties window.
- Look for the installed-files or local-files section and the client’s file-verification command. Read the current label carefully; wording may differ between Steam client versions.
- Run the verification and allow it to finish before starting the game.
If you cannot find the control, use Steam’s E-Day technical-support route and follow the current instructions shown there. Do not transplant Xbox app steps into Steam, and do not delete files from a directory found in an unrelated game guide.
Steam verification is appropriate after a manual mod removal leaves the game altered or unstable. Keep your save backup anyway: file verification and save handling are separate concerns, and there is no universal E-Day save location or cloud-sync behavior established here.

This comparison is about the recovery decision, not a promise that both storefronts repair files identically. The storefront owns the installation it verifies, so always run the tool in the same client that launches the game.

Why manual deletion is risky
There is no confirmed, official E-Day list of mod folders or replacement files. A mod can add a file, overwrite an original, redirect loading through a manager or alter more than one location. Deleting only the obvious file can leave a partial installation; deleting a similarly named file can damage the unmodified game.
If you must inspect files before repairing:
- Use the mod manager’s file list or the mod author’s manifest as your source of truth.
- Move uncertain files to a quarantine folder outside the game directory instead of permanently deleting them.
- Keep a written list of every file moved so you can restore it if the game needs it.
- Never delete a file solely because its timestamp is recent; updates and shader compilation can also change timestamps.
- Do not copy cleanup instructions from another Gears title, another storefront or another edition of E-Day.
Once the known mod files are removed, let the storefront verify the installation. That combination is safer than trying to reconstruct the original directory by memory.
Check the result with a clean launch
- Disable or exit every E-Day mod manager and overlay that injects files into the game.
- Start the game from its normal storefront shortcut.
- Confirm that replaced character models, altered HUD elements or other visible changes are gone.
- Load a backed-up save only after reaching the main menu successfully.
- Test a short session before restoring optional configuration files or enabling mods again.
Reports describe PC E-Day mods that replace character models and mention HUD and performance-related modifications. Those reports show that mod activity exists; they do not prove that every reported performance modification works. One current report specifically did not test the performance mods, so do not use an alleged frame-rate improvement as evidence that your installation is clean.
Troubleshooting after removal
The game still shows a modified model or HUD
Close the game, disable the manager completely and check whether its profile or deployment mode is still active. If the manager has no restore command, run the storefront’s verification process. Do not keep deleting files based on names alone.
The game crashes or will not start
Undo any manual deletions by restoring the quarantined files, then run verification. A partial deletion can be repaired more reliably by the storefront than by adding replacement files from an unofficial download. If verification completes but the crash remains, use the official Gears support route and describe the storefront, the mod manager or installer used, and the point at which the failure occurs.
A save is missing
Stop launching the game repeatedly and check the independent backup you made before repair. The Xbox app warning specifically says unbacked-up saves will not be retained. Do not overwrite a backup with a newly created empty profile. If you used cloud synchronization, follow the storefront’s current recovery guidance rather than guessing which copy is newest.

Repair reports success but files are still wrong
Confirm that you repaired the same installation you launch. Multiple libraries, external drives and duplicate shortcuts can point to different installations. Then verify that the mod manager is not redeploying files at launch. If the mismatch persists, escalate to official support with the repair result and installation details; an unverified manual cleanup is more likely to create another fault.

Leave the mod disabled while testing. An update can change base files and make an old mod incompatible, while a manager may automatically redeploy a profile. Remove or archive the profile according to that manager’s documentation before applying another game update.
When a full reinstall is justified
A reinstall is a last resort, not the first step. Use it when the manager has no removal path, verification repeatedly fails, or official support instructs you to reinstall.
- Back up saves and personal files outside the installation directory.
- Record which storefront owns the installation and which account launches it.
- Remove the game through that storefront’s normal uninstall control.
- Restart the PC if the storefront requests it, then install E-Day again from the same storefront.
- Launch the untouched game once before restoring saves or installing any mod.
- Restore personal files selectively, keeping the clean backup until the game is stable.
A reinstall does not make an unbacked-up save recoverable. It also does not remove a separate mod manager profile unless you remove or disable that profile independently.

Before you reinstall or contact support
Collect a short record while the problem is easy to describe. Note the storefront, installation drive, mod manager or installer name, the mods that were enabled, and whether you removed them through an uninstall command or manually. Record the exact symptom—crash during startup, altered character model, changed HUD, missing save or a verification error—and the time it first appeared. Keep screenshots and any verification result visible in the client.
Do not attach an entire game directory or a save file publicly unless official support specifically requests it. Preserve the original backup and quarantined files. This record lets support distinguish a bad deployment from a damaged base installation and prevents you from repeating destructive cleanup steps.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Repairing first and backing up later: the Xbox warning says the order matters.
- Running a second mod manager: two managers can deploy different profiles and make a clean launch appear modified.
- Restoring every backup at once: restore saves and personal settings selectively so you can identify what reintroduces the issue.
- Testing with an old mod enabled: confirm the untouched game before troubleshooting a mod’s compatibility with a new update.
- Assuming a successful scan means a clean launch: verify that the same storefront, library and shortcut are being used.
