Yes—you can uninstall a Free Play Days game without deleting your progress. On Xbox, close the game normally, remain signed in and online long enough for the latest save to synchronize, then remove only the installed game from My games & apps. Do not use a saved-data command, especially Delete everywhere. When you regain access, reinstall or purchase the title, launch it under the same account, and let synchronization finish before continuing.
What uninstalling actually removes
An Xbox game has two separate things that are easy to confuse:

- The installation: the game files occupying space on the console or attached storage.
- Saved data: your progress, settings and other save information associated with your Xbox account and console.
Choosing Uninstall removes the installed game files. It is not the same operation as deleting saved data. Xbox states that “Your game saves on XBOX are automatically backed up to the XBOX network” and that the latest saves “will automatically sync the next time you launch a game” (Xbox, 2026). That backup does not make every deletion safe: a command that explicitly removes saved data can still destroy progress.
The safe objective is therefore narrow: remove the installation, leave saved data alone, and later launch the title while signed in so the console can synchronize the backed-up save.

Before you uninstall: a three-point safety check
1. Finish the session normally
Exit through the game’s normal menu rather than shutting down the console while a checkpoint or autosave is in progress. Give the title time to finish writing its latest progress.
2. Stay signed in and connected
Use the Xbox profile that played the game and keep the console online while you finish the session and begin the uninstall. This gives the latest save an opportunity to synchronize with the Xbox network. If the console is offline, postpone the removal until it reconnects and the game has completed its normal save process.
3. Identify the command you are selecting
You want the command that removes the game installation. If the console displays separate choices for the game and saved data, select only the installation-removal option. Never select Delete everywhere when your goal is to free storage.

Exact Xbox procedure
- Close the Free Play Days game normally and wait for any save activity to finish.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Xbox profile that played the title and that the console is online.
- Open My games & apps.
- Choose See all, then open Games.
- Highlight the Free Play Days title you want to remove.
- Press the controller’s Menu button.
- Choose Uninstall and confirm the installation removal.
Dashboard wording can change after an Xbox update. The labels may not be identical on every console, but the distinction remains the same: remove the installed game, not its saved data. After confirmation, the game files are removed and the storage space becomes available; your cloud-backed progress is not intentionally deleted by this uninstall action.
How to reinstall and recover your progress
Reinstalling the files is only one part of returning to a Free Play Days title. You also need an entitlement that permits you to launch it.
- Regain access to the game through an active offer or by purchasing the title. If the Free Play Days event has ended, a purchase is the normal way to continue playing.
- Install the game from its Xbox or Microsoft Store detail page.
- Launch it while signed in to the same Xbox account used for the original session.
- Allow the save-synchronization process or prompt to complete before starting the game.
- Do not switch profiles, disconnect the console or begin playing offline until synchronization has finished.
A successful reinstall restores the program files, not a permanent entitlement. If the event is over and you have not purchased the game or obtained another qualifying license, the files may be present but the title can still be unavailable to play.

Why Free Play Days access can end after an uninstall
Free Play Days is a time-limited access offer. In the Xbox Wire event announced for June 4, 2026, participating games were available from June 4 through June 7, 2026 for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members. Descenders was offered as a console bonus for all Xbox players. Xbox directed players to install each participating game from its Xbox or Microsoft Store detail page.

During that window, uninstalling and reinstalling could be enough to return to the game, provided the offer was still active. After the closing date, reinstalling does not extend the event. Xbox said players could purchase a participating game to continue playing while keeping their Gamerscore and achievements. Discounts, discount percentages, title availability and regions vary, so check the current Microsoft Store listing for the specific game before relying on a purchase or promotion.
This is why an uninstall can preserve your progress while still leaving you unable to launch the title later: save retention and play entitlement are separate systems.

Uninstall versus saved-data commands

Xbox’s current local-save management path is Settings > System > Storage > Manage local game saves. From there, you can view, sort and delete local saves. That area is separate from the game-uninstall command, so entering it is unnecessary when you simply want to remove an installation.

If the Free Play Days window is still open and you expect to keep playing, leaving the installation in place avoids a download. If storage is more valuable than immediate access, uninstalling is the safer space-saving choice as long as you complete the save and sync checks first.

The game is gone, but the progress does not appear after reinstalling
- Confirm that you launched the title under the same Xbox profile that played it originally.
- Reconnect the console to the internet and relaunch so synchronization can run.
- Wait for the sync process to finish instead of starting the game offline or interrupting the prompt.
- Check whether the title is still covered by your current entitlement; an expired Free Play Days offer can block access even when the installation and save are present.
The console offers several deletion choices
Cancel the operation if the wording is unclear. Return to My games & apps > See all > Games, highlight the title, press Menu, and select the installation’s Uninstall command. Do not proceed through Settings > System > Storage > Manage local game saves unless you intentionally need to manage local save files.
The event has ended and reinstalling does not let you play
That behavior is consistent with a time-limited entitlement. Check the current Xbox or Microsoft Store page for the title’s purchase requirement, regional availability and any active subscription or promotional access. Reinstalling files cannot renew an expired event.
You removed the wrong thing
If you selected a saved-data deletion command rather than Uninstall, stop making further changes and avoid launching under a different profile. The safe procedure in this guide applies only when the saved data was left intact; a deliberate deletion, particularly Delete everywhere, is a different and potentially irreversible action.
Storage planning without touching saves
Free Play Days installations can be large, and a temporary game can compete with titles you play regularly. Removing the installation is the least disruptive way to reclaim that space because it does not require entering save-management controls. Before deleting anything, decide whether you need the title during the current event, whether you expect to purchase it afterward, and whether a compatible external-storage option would better fit your setup.

- Finish the game’s normal save process.
- Stay signed in to the playing profile.
- Keep the console online while the latest save synchronizes.
- Use My games & apps > See all > Games.
- Highlight the title, press Menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Do not choose Delete everywhere or another saved-data deletion command.
- When access returns, reinstall or purchase the game as required.
- Launch under the same profile and let synchronization finish before playing offline.
The key distinction is simple: uninstalling removes the game’s installed files, while saved-data commands remove progress. Free Play Days access can expire independently, so preserving a save does not guarantee that the game will remain playable without a current entitlement.
