PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIdentify the antivirus that is active, save your work, keep Windows Firewall on, and uninstall the program from Windows rather than deleting its folder. Restart, then open Windows Security and verify that Microsoft Defender Antivirus or your chosen single provider is active and updating. If the normal uninstall fails, use the exact vendor removal utility; do not rely on a random “PC cleanup” download.
Why removing an antivirus can improve performance
Antivirus software continually watches files, downloads, programs, browser activity and system changes. Two products doing that work at the same time can duplicate scans, drivers, services and notifications. Microsoft states: “Using more than one real-time security product can affect your PC’s performance.” It also states: “Microsoft Defender Antivirus comes built-in to Windows 10 and Windows 11.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That does not mean every antivirus slows every computer. The effect depends on the product, Windows build, storage type, processor, amount of memory and what you are doing. A Tom’s Guide comparative test published in 2026 reported a 15.9% FPS penalty for McAfee in its gaming benchmark, while Avast, Bitdefender and Norton showed little or no measurable drop in the listed scenarios. That is one workload-specific result, not a universal slowdown percentage for antivirus software.
Before uninstalling, check whether the antivirus is actually the cause. In Task Manager, sort the Processes tab by CPU, Memory and Disk, and note the exact process name. A pending Windows update, nearly full drive, failing storage, malware or another startup program can produce the same symptoms. Removing protection will not fix those causes.

Before you uninstall: protect the PC and identify the right program
1. Confirm the active provider
Open Windows Security from the Start menu and select Virus & threat protection. The page identifies the provider handling real-time protection. Also look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps for other security products and expired trials. A trial that is no longer active may still leave services or browser components behind.
Write down the exact product and edition name. “Internet Security,” “Endpoint,” a password manager, a VPN, a browser extension and a separate antivirus may be installed as different entries. Remove only the product you intend to remove, and plan a separate cleanup for companion components if the vendor lists them.
2. Save work and close applications
Save documents, close games and installers, and sign in with an administrator account if Windows requests permission. Uninstallers may stop services, replace drivers or require a restart. Do not begin while a system update, backup or other security installation is running.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Keep a firewall enabled
Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection and make sure the firewall for your active network is on. Leave it enabled during the removal. Do not browse risky sites, download unknown software or open unexpected attachments while real-time antivirus protection is temporarily absent.

4. Have a recovery path
Know how to reconnect to the internet, have your Windows administrator password available and save any product license information you may need if you decide to reinstall. Downloading a vendor’s official removal utility before starting can be useful, but obtain it only from that vendor’s support domain and verify the product name and Windows version.
Standard uninstall procedure on Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open the installed-app list. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps. In Windows 10, use Settings > Apps > Apps & features. On older builds, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find the exact antivirus entry. Search by the product name you recorded in Windows Security. Check the publisher shown by Windows so you do not remove a similarly named utility.
- Start the uninstall. Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the program and choose Uninstall in Windows 10 or Control Panel. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Complete the vendor wizard. Choose the option that removes the product rather than repairing or changing it. Some wizards offer to retain settings, quarantine data or browser extensions; read each screen and remove components you no longer need.
- Restart when prompted. Restart even if the wizard says that removal is complete. Security drivers and services can remain loaded until Windows starts again.
- Verify protection. After signing in, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Confirm that Microsoft Defender Antivirus or another provider is active and receiving updates. Do not assume protection returned automatically.
- Scan if symptoms suggest compromise. If the slowdown included pop-ups, browser redirects, unknown programs or other suspicious behavior, run a scan after protection is restored. A clean uninstall does not prove that the PC is free of malware.
What to check after the restart
| Check | What you should see | If it is not true |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Security provider | Microsoft Defender Antivirus or one intentionally selected provider is active. | Open the installed-app list for another security product, restart again, or follow the selected provider’s setup instructions. |
| Real-time protection | The Virus & threat protection page reports that real-time protection is on. | Do not browse or open unknown files until a provider is active. |
| Security intelligence updates | The provider shows current updates or offers a successful update check. | Connect to a trusted network and run the provider’s update action; investigate an error before relying on the PC. |
| Firewall | The active network profile remains protected by Windows Firewall or another chosen firewall. | Turn the firewall on before continuing to use the computer. |
| Performance | CPU, memory and disk usage settle after startup and the removed product’s processes no longer appear. | Investigate other startup items, updates, storage pressure or malware in Task Manager and Windows Security. |
Windows may briefly use extra CPU or disk after a restart while it finishes updates, indexes files or performs an initial scan. Judge the result after that activity has settled, not during the first few minutes of startup.
When the normal uninstall fails
Typical failure signs include an error message, a wizard that closes without removing the program, an entry with no usable uninstall button, or a message saying that setup is already running. Do not delete the antivirus directory manually. That can leave drivers, services and installer records behind.

Find the product’s official support instructions and download the removal utility for that exact product and Windows version. Bitdefender maintains a cross-vendor list of uninstall tools and warns that incomplete removal can degrade performance or interfere with malware detection. Its Windows instructions say to try normal installed-program removal first, use its Uninstall Tool if errors occur, and restart afterward.

- Secure design: Magnetic case and foam insert ensure secure storage and transportation. Additionally, the inside of the lid serves as a sorting/organization tray.

Avast recommends its Uninstall Tool in Safe Mode when Start-menu removal fails or setup is reported as already running. Norton likewise directs users to a dedicated removal utility or product-specific instructions when ordinary uninstall cannot remove a security product. The names and download locations of these tools can change, so use the vendor’s current support page rather than an old forum attachment or mirror.
Run a cleanup utility safely
- Confirm the publisher, product name and supported Windows versions on the vendor’s support page.
- Read whether the utility removes only the antivirus or also related VPN, password-manager, browser and identity components.
- Save work, close applications and disconnect from risky browsing while protection is disabled.
- Run the utility with administrator approval. If the vendor requires Safe Mode, follow its instructions exactly; do not improvise registry or driver deletion.
- Restart when the utility finishes, then verify the provider, real-time protection, updates and firewall in Windows Security.
Never download a “cleanup tool” from a random mirror. A fake remover can install malware, remove the wrong files or leave the machine less protected than before.
Repair a broken Windows uninstall entry
If the antivirus entry is missing, the uninstall button produces an error, or a previous removal left corrupted installer records, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. Microsoft describes it as a way to repair common problems such as corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Microsoft’s official troubleshooter instructions and download the current tool from Microsoft.
- Run it and choose whether you are having trouble installing or uninstalling a program.
- Select the antivirus entry when it appears. If it is not listed, use the product code or other option offered by the troubleshooter only when Microsoft’s instructions tell you to.
- Allow the tool to repair the uninstall data, then restart Windows.
- Check Windows Security and the installed-app list again. If drivers or services remain, use the antivirus vendor’s official utility rather than editing the registry manually.
The troubleshooter repairs Windows installer records; it is not a universal antivirus cleaner. A successful repair may still need the product’s own removal tool and a restart.

Normal uninstall or vendor cleanup utility?
| Situation | Use first | Why | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| The product appears normally in Installed apps or Programs and Features. | Windows’ standard Uninstall command. | It is the least invasive path and uses the product’s registered installer. | Restart and verify that services and protection status changed. |
| The wizard errors, loops, or reports that setup is already running. | The exact vendor removal utility, using Safe Mode if required. | It is designed to remove product-specific drivers and services that the ordinary wizard could not handle. | Use only the vendor’s current support download and follow its version instructions. |
| The entry is missing or Windows reports corrupted uninstall data. | Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. | It can repair common registry and installer-record problems. | It may not remove every security driver or companion component. |
| You are tempted to delete the program folder. | Do not do this. | Manual deletion can leave active services, drivers and broken installer records. | Return to the standard uninstaller, Microsoft troubleshooter or vendor utility. |
Will Microsoft Defender turn back on?
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11, and Windows can use it when no other compatible real-time provider is registered. The safe approach is verification, not assumption: after the restart, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and read the status shown there.
If another antivirus remains installed, Defender may be passive while that product supplies real-time protection. Running two real-time products is unnecessary and can affect performance. Choose one intended real-time provider, remove unwanted security products and confirm that the chosen provider reports active protection and current updates.
A warning, blank provider status or disabled real-time protection means the transition is incomplete. Keep the firewall on, avoid risky activity and resolve the provider or update error before treating the PC as protected.
Should you keep Defender or install another antivirus?
Keep Microsoft Defender
- It is already integrated into Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- There is no second real-time engine competing with it after other antivirus products are removed.
- Updates and status are managed through Windows Security and Windows Update.
Choose one other provider
- You need a feature or management system that Defender does not provide for your household or organization.
- The provider supports your Windows edition and supplies a current official installer and removal path.
- You accept that its real-time protection should replace, not run alongside, another real-time antivirus engine.
Do not install a second antivirus merely to compensate for a slow computer. First establish which process is consuming resources, remove conflicting products cleanly and retest the workload.

Windows 10/11 versus macOS
The procedure above is for Windows. Windows Security, Installed apps, Programs and Features and Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter do not exist on macOS. On a Mac, use the antivirus publisher’s macOS-specific uninstaller and instructions, then restart and check the publisher’s status page or macOS security settings to confirm that no unwanted real-time component remains.
Do not apply Windows cleanup utilities, Safe Mode steps or registry instructions to macOS. Product names and removal paths differ between operating systems, and a vendor’s Windows remover may not support its Mac edition. If the Mac product has no working uninstaller, use the publisher’s support procedure rather than deleting application files or system extensions by hand.
If the PC is still slow after removal
Removal is only a diagnosis if performance does not improve. Open Task Manager and check which process is now highest in CPU, Memory or Disk usage. Then work through these likely causes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Startup overload: disable nonessential startup applications in Task Manager’s Startup apps tab, changing one item at a time.
- Windows maintenance: finish pending Windows updates and restart when requested.
- Storage pressure: check free space on the system drive. Very low free space can make updates, paging and temporary files slower.
- Malware or unwanted software: run a scan from the provider shown as active in Windows Security and investigate unexpected browser changes or programs.
- Hardware or thermal limits: sustained high temperatures, failing storage or insufficient memory can throttle a PC regardless of antivirus choice.
- A different security component: VPNs, browser security extensions, backup scanners and corporate endpoint agents can continue running after the main antivirus is removed.
Compare the same task before and after the restart, with the same applications open. A single game, browser tab set or update can produce a different workload, so avoid attributing every change to the uninstall.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Identify the active antivirus in Windows Security and list all other installed security products.
- Save work, close applications and keep Windows Firewall enabled.
- Use Settings or Control Panel to uninstall the exact product.
- Restart when requested; do not stop after the wizard’s final screen.
- Confirm one active provider, real-time protection, current updates and firewall status.
- If uninstall fails, use Microsoft’s troubleshooter for broken installer records or the exact vendor utility for product remnants.
- Use Safe Mode only when the vendor’s instructions require it.
- Never use a random mirror, generic optimizer or manual program-folder deletion.
- If the PC remains slow, investigate Task Manager, updates, storage, malware and other startup processes.
