How to Uninstall an Office Update That Caused Problems on Windows

If an Office or Microsoft 365 app started failing immediately after an update, the supported fix is usually to revert the Click-to-Run installation to an earlier build with Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool. This is not the same as uninstalling Office, and it is not the same as removing a Windows Update.

Rollback works only for Click-to-Run Office installations. It does not apply to MSI installations, and a company-managed or volume-licensed device may block local changes. First identify your installation type, find a real earlier build in Microsoft’s current Office update history, then decide whether the problem justifies temporarily giving up fixes included in the newest build.

What “uninstall an Office update” actually means

Office updates are normally cumulative builds rather than separate packages that appear in Windows’ list of removable operating-system updates. For a Click-to-Run installation, the practical equivalent of uninstalling a troublesome update is to replace the current Office build with a selected earlier build.

Microsoft Support cautions users to weigh the severity of the problem against the “security, performance, and reliability improvements” in the latest update before reverting. An older build can lack fixes for vulnerabilities or other defects. Treat rollback as a temporary diagnostic or compatibility measure, not as a permanent way to remain on an obsolete build.

The procedure below is for Office and Microsoft 365 apps on Windows. It uses the free Office Deployment Tool (ODT), a configuration file, and an elevated Command Prompt. You need the complete version and build number of the earlier release; guessing a number can leave the installation unchanged or produce an error.

Check the symptom and identify the Office installation

Do not roll back solely because an update was installed recently. Confirm that the failure began after the update and record what is affected: one app or all Office apps, a specific file type, an add-in, printing, sign-in, activation, or a crash during startup. This record will help you decide whether a build rollback is appropriate and whether the same symptom remains afterward.

Use the Account page

  1. Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or another Office app that still starts. In classic Outlook, open File > Office Account.
  2. In most other Office apps, choose File > Account.
  3. Read the product information. A Click-to-Run installation shows a version and build number and includes the words Click-to-Run. A Microsoft Store installation identifies itself as Microsoft Store.
  4. Note the displayed product name, update channel if shown, full version, and full build number. Keep this information with your symptom notes.

If the page does not show the expected update controls, the installation may be volume licensed or controlled by your employer’s Group Policy. That is a management issue, not evidence that the update is removable through Windows Settings.

Installation types and what they mean

Installation shown in Office Can the ODT rollback procedure be used? What to do
Click-to-Run Yes, this is the installation type covered by Microsoft’s rollback procedure. Continue with the build-selection and ODT steps below.
Microsoft Store Not covered by the Click-to-Run rollback instructions. Use the Store’s app-management or repair options, or follow your organization’s support process.
MSI No. Microsoft’s cited rollback article explicitly excludes MSI installations. Use the MSI product’s repair, patch-management, or enterprise deployment process instead.
Volume-licensed or Group Policy managed Possibly blocked or controlled centrally. Contact the administrator or help desk; local settings may not be authoritative.

Do not continue with the ODT instructions if your information identifies an MSI installation. Installing an unrelated Click-to-Run configuration over an MSI product is not a supported way to repair it.

Find a valid earlier Office build

Microsoft’s Office update history is the authoritative place to choose the target. Select the history page for your Office product and update channel, then locate a build released before the problem appeared. Copy the entire version number, including all components in the form 16.0.xxxxx.yyyyy.

  • Match the product and channel. A build listed for one channel is not automatically available to another.
  • Choose a build that actually appears in the current history. Do not substitute a date, a short version such as “2408,” or a number copied from an unrelated installation.
  • Keep a copy of the current build number before changing anything. It gives you a recovery reference if the rollback fails.
  • Read the history entry for known issues and fixes. If a later build already addresses your symptom, moving back only one release may be preferable to using a much older build.

Build lists and channel availability change over time. Check the live Microsoft history immediately before creating the configuration file rather than relying on an old forum post or an example number.

Roll back Click-to-Run Office with the Office Deployment Tool

The ODT downloads Office deployment files and applies the version specified in an XML configuration. You do not need a paid utility or a replacement product. An administrator account is required because the command changes the installed Office build.

1. Download and extract the deployment tool

  1. Download the current Office Deployment Tool from Microsoft and run the downloaded executable.
  2. Accept the license terms when prompted.
  3. Choose a simple, writable folder such as C:OfficeRollback. The extractor places Setup.exe and supporting files there.
  4. Make sure your Windows account can create and edit a text file in that folder.

Use Microsoft’s current ODT package rather than an executable copied from an unknown site. The tool itself is free; the important input is the target build you selected from Microsoft’s update history.

2. Create the configuration file

In the same folder as Setup.exe, create a file named config.xml. Its contents should be:

<Configuration>
  <Updates Enabled="TRUE" TargetVersion="16.0.xxxxx.yyyyy" />
</Configuration>

Replace 16.0.xxxxx.yyyyy with the complete earlier version number from the update-history entry. Do not leave the example placeholder in place. Save the file as plain text with the .xml extension, not config.xml.txt. In File Explorer, enable filename extensions if you need to verify this.

3. Run the configuration from an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Change to the folder containing both files. For the example folder, enter cd /d C:OfficeRollback and press Enter.
  3. Start the rollback with setup.exe /configure config.xml.
  4. Allow the Office installer to work. Close Office applications if the installer asks you to, and do not shut down Windows while files are being replaced.

The command may return to the prompt without a detailed success message. Wait for Office applications to finish updating, then open an app and verify the version on File > Account. If the current build is still shown, check the folder path, XML filename, target version, permissions, and network connection before trying again.

4. Check for the target build in Office

  1. Open Word or another Office app.
  2. Go to File > Office Account (or File > Account, depending on the app).
  3. Under product information, confirm that the full version and build now match the earlier build you selected.
  4. If Office asks you to activate again, complete the sign-in or product-key process associated with your license.

A rollback changes the installed program files; it does not delete documents, workbooks, mailboxes, or other files you created with Office. It can, however, expose compatibility differences in add-ins or features that depend on a newer build.

Temporarily stop Office from immediately updating again

If automatic updates remain enabled, Office can reinstall the problematic build as soon as it checks for updates. After confirming the rollback, pause updates only long enough to avoid that loop while you monitor Microsoft’s history for a fixed release.

  1. Open an Office app.
  2. Choose File > Office Account (or File > Account).
  3. Select Update Options.
  4. Choose Disable Updates and confirm if prompted.

Set a calendar reminder to check the Office update history. When a later build is available that does not show the same issue, return to File > Office Account > Update Options and select Enable Updates, then use Update Now. Leaving updates disabled indefinitely increases exposure to security and reliability defects.

When Update Options is missing

If the Account page shows only About and no Update Options, Microsoft says the installation may use a volume license or a company Group Policy. A work or school device may also receive Office through centralized software distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not try to bypass the policy with a local registry change or an unrelated installer.
  • Ask your organization’s help desk whether a fixed Office build is approved and whether administrators can roll back the channel centrally.
  • If the device is not organization managed, check Microsoft Update and the license information shown in Office. Some licensing arrangements expose fewer local controls.
  • Record the exact build, error message, and time the problem began so the administrator can correlate it with the organization’s deployment.

An administrator may need to create and deploy the configuration rather than allowing an individual user to run it. A successful local command is not a substitute for an organization’s change-management policy.

Do not confuse these three operations

Operation What changes When it is appropriate
Revert an Office build Replaces a Click-to-Run Office version with a selected earlier build using the ODT. An Office app problem began after a specific build and the installation is Click-to-Run.
Repair or uninstall Office Repairs program components or removes the Office applications for a later reinstall. Files are damaged, the product will not start, or rollback is unavailable or ineffective.
Uninstall a Windows Update Removes an operating-system update through Windows Settings or Windows Recovery Environment. The failing component is Windows itself, not an Office application build.

Removing Office does not remove documents, workbooks, presentations, or other files created with Office, although you should still maintain a current backup before major repairs. Removing a Windows security update carries its own risks and does not roll Office back.

If rollback is unavailable or does not solve the problem

Repair Office first

Use Windows’ installed-app options to open the Office entry and choose its available repair action. A quick repair is less disruptive; an online repair downloads fresh program files and can take longer. The exact labels vary with Windows and the Office installation type. Restart Windows and retest the original symptom after the repair.

Use uninstall and reinstall as a broader reset

If repair fails, uninstall Office using the method for your installation type, then reinstall from the account or deployment source that owns the license. Microsoft’s uninstall guidance covers Click-to-Run, MSI, and Microsoft Store installations differently. The Microsoft Support uninstall troubleshooter requires Windows 10 or later and, according to the cited guidance, currently cannot uninstall Office 2024; verify the live instructions because that tool’s supported products can change.

Check whether the problem is outside Office

  • Test the same document in another Office app or in Office on the web, if your organization permits it.
  • Start the affected app in safe mode to determine whether an add-in is responsible.
  • Check printer, antivirus, font, cloud-storage, and Windows changes made at the same time as the Office update.
  • If only one user profile is affected, test a separate Windows profile before replacing the whole installation.

These checks do not replace Microsoft’s rollback procedure, but they can prevent an unnecessary downgrade when an add-in or Windows component is the real cause.

Common rollback failures and practical fixes

The command says the configuration is invalid

Open config.xml in a plain-text editor and check the opening and closing tags, quotation marks, and the exact spelling of TargetVersion. Ensure the target contains the full four-part version and that the file is in the same directory as Setup.exe.

Nothing changes after the command

Confirm that Command Prompt was started as administrator and that cd /d points to the folder containing the files. Recheck the target build against Microsoft’s current history and verify that the installed product is Click-to-Run rather than MSI or Store.

Office keeps reinstalling the newer build

Disable updates through File > Office Account > Update Options > Disable Updates after the rollback. On a managed computer, a policy may re-enable updates; ask the administrator to hold the approved build instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Activation appears again

Complete the normal Office sign-in or product-key activation. Keep the account or license information available before beginning the rollback, particularly on a shared or organization-managed computer.

The original error remains

Restore updates when appropriate and move to repair, add-in isolation, or a managed support ticket. A build rollback cannot fix a damaged user profile, incompatible peripheral, corrupted document, or Windows-level failure that happens to have been noticed after an Office update.

When to return to the current build

Monitor Microsoft’s update history for a later build that addresses the problem. Once that build is available and approved for your channel, enable automatic updates and use Update Now. Verify the application, add-ins, documents, printing, and sign-in before considering the incident closed.

Keep a short record of the reverted version, the symptom, the date, and the build that resolves it. That information makes a future support request much faster and helps an organization avoid deploying the same problematic build to other users.
