If Xbox sign-in stopped working immediately after Windows Update, first identify the update’s KB number and installation date, then remove it from Windows Update history. On Windows 11, use Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates. If Windows will not start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
The update title alone does not prove which package caused the failure. Record the exact KB number before rolling anything back, test the same Microsoft account after restarting, and treat security-update removal as a temporary recovery measure rather than a permanent fix.

What to remove—and what the Xbox symptom does (and does not) prove
“Xbox sign-in broke after Windows Update” is a timing clue, not a known universal KB diagnosis. Different Windows editions, update channels and installed components can produce similar symptoms. The useful evidence is the update’s KB number, its name and its installation date in Windows Update history.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Microsoft’s support guidance is to uninstall a recent update when it is causing device errors or other issues. That does not mean every sign-in problem is caused by the latest package, and it does not mean an update with “Xbox” or “Gaming” in its description exists. Start with the update history rather than guessing a KB number from online reports.

Choose the recovery route
Use the normal Settings route whenever Windows is usable. Use WinRE only when Settings cannot be opened or Windows cannot boot far enough to reach it. The two routes expose different rollback choices, so select the option that matches the update you are investigating.
| Situation | Route | What you can select | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows starts and Settings opens | Windows Update history | An individual listed update | Fastest route, but some updates are not removable |
| Windows starts but the Xbox app alone cannot sign in | Check history, then uninstall the suspect update | The matching quality or feature update shown in history | Rollback may be unnecessary if repairing the app resolves the problem |
| Windows will not start normally or Settings is inaccessible | Windows Recovery Environment | Latest quality update or latest feature update | Less granular; the displayed category may include many changes |
| Errors 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F appear while installing or starting Gaming Services | The documented Gaming Services workaround | Gaming Services packages and service entries | Old, narrow workaround; not a general Xbox sign-in procedure |
Before uninstalling anything
Capture the update details
- Open Windows Update history using the path for your Windows version.
- Look for updates installed immediately before the first failed Xbox sign-in.
- Write down the full KB identifier, update name, category and installation date. Keep this record even if you later reinstall the update.
If several updates were installed on the same day, note all of them. The first item in the list is not automatically the culprit, and the generic phrase “latest Windows update” is not enough to identify a package.
Protect your account and data
- Save open work and make sure you can authenticate to Windows with an account that has permission to uninstall updates.
- If the device uses BitLocker or another startup-protection feature, have the recovery key available. Recovery tools can request it before changing system files.
- Do not remove a security update casually. Microsoft specifically warns: “Before uninstalling a security update, make sure you understand the risks.” Removing it can leave known vulnerabilities unpatched.
- If the Xbox problem is limited to one app and Windows otherwise works, try the app-repair path after documenting the update. This can avoid rolling back a security fix.
Uninstall the update in Windows 11
These are Microsoft’s Windows 11 labels. Feature names can differ slightly on customized or managed PCs, but the route is the same.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update in the left navigation.
- Choose Update history.
- Scroll to and select Uninstall updates.
- Find the KB number you recorded. Check the name and date before selecting it.
- Choose Uninstall, confirm any prompts and allow Windows to complete the operation.
- Restart when Windows requests it. Do not force the computer off while the rollback is in progress.
Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled. A package may be absent from this list because it is not removable, because a dependent update is installed, or because the available rollback window has passed. Do not substitute an unrelated KB simply because it is the only one visible.

Uninstall the update in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses a different Settings label:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select View update history.
- Choose Uninstall updates.
- Select the suspect KB, verify its date and name, then choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows and test Xbox sign-in with the same account that failed before.
Windows 10 reached the end of Microsoft’s support period on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. An uninstall may restore a working state, but it does not restore the missing security coverage; plan a supported operating-system path rather than relying on indefinite rollback.
When Windows will not boot: use Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE is the appropriate route when normal Windows access fails. It works outside the ordinary desktop, so it can remove a recent update even when Settings cannot load.
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment. It may appear automatically after repeated failed starts, or you can use the recovery method provided by your device manufacturer or Windows installation media.
- On the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Choose Uninstall Updates.
- Select Uninstall latest quality update or Uninstall latest feature update, depending on which category matches the item you recorded.
- Follow the prompts and restart. If BitLocker requests a recovery key, enter the key associated with that device.
WinRE normally offers a category-level rollback rather than a full list of every KB. A quality update is the usual monthly cumulative package; a feature update is the larger Windows version change. If the Xbox failure began after a quality update, start with that option. Do not choose a feature-update rollback merely because it is available.
Restart and verify the result
After either route, reboot fully before judging the result. Open the Xbox app, use the same Microsoft account, and repeat the action that previously failed. Check whether the sign-in window opens, whether authentication completes and whether the app remains signed in after it closes and reopens.

If sign-in works again, record the removed KB and the date of the successful test. Use only the update-pause or defer controls available in your Windows edition and any work or school policy; managed devices may prevent local changes. Look for a corrected update or Microsoft guidance instead of leaving a security fix removed indefinitely.
If the symptom is unchanged, the update was not necessarily the cause. Continue with the app-repair step rather than repeatedly uninstalling unrelated packages.
Repair or reset the Xbox app when rollback does not help
Windows provides per-app repair controls on supported installations. They are less disruptive than removing another system update.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox in the list.
- Open its menu and select Advanced options.
- Choose Repair. This attempts to correct the app without deleting its stored app data.
- Restart the Xbox app and test sign-in.
- If Repair does not resolve the problem and a Reset button is offered, select Reset, confirm the warning, then sign in again.
Repair and Reset are not available for every app or every Windows build. Reset can remove the Xbox app’s local data and preferences, so expect to authenticate again. If Advanced options is missing, do not assume the update is removable; the control simply is not exposed for that installation.

Do not confuse Gaming Services errors with a general sign-in failure
Microsoft’s KB5004327 guidance concerns Windows 10 errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F that occur when Gaming Services is installed or started. Its workaround removes Gaming Services packages and two related registry service keys with PowerShell, restarts the PC, and then reinstalls Gaming Services from the Xbox app.
This is a narrow, dated workaround for that documented error family, not a universal answer to an Xbox account sign-in problem. The related out-of-band resolution, KB5004476, was published on June 11, 2021. Do not run registry-removal commands merely because the Xbox app will not authenticate, and do not copy a script from an unrelated forum. If the exact error is present, follow the current Microsoft instructions for that KB and understand that registry and package changes require administrator access.
How to decide whether the update is really responsible
Only the Xbox app is affected
If web sign-in, Microsoft Store access and other Windows functions work, first confirm the KB timing and then use Xbox app Repair. A rollback is reasonable when the failure began directly after a newly installed update and the KB is removable, but it is not proof that the update caused the issue.
Several Windows functions fail
When the Start menu, Store, networking or multiple Microsoft-account experiences also fail, the update is a stronger suspect. Use Settings if Windows remains stable; use WinRE if normal access is unreliable. Record any recovery error instead of repeatedly trying different updates.
Best Value
The computer cannot boot
Skip the Xbox app steps until Windows starts. In WinRE, choose the quality- or feature-update option that matches the installation date and category. If uninstalling the latest update does not restore booting, use the remaining recovery options or obtain assistance from the device administrator; do not delete random files from the Windows directory.
Problems you may encounter during removal
The KB is not listed
Confirm that you are viewing update history rather than the general Windows Update landing page. Some updates cannot be uninstalled, and WinRE may expose only a category-level option. If the package is not offered by either route, do not force removal with unofficial scripts.
Uninstall fails or rolls back
Keep the device connected to reliable power, close applications and retry once after a normal restart. If the operation continues to fail, capture the displayed error and the KB number. Repeated failed rollbacks can leave the system in a recovery state; use WinRE rather than attempting multiple unrelated removals from the desktop.
Recommended Free Tools
The update returns later
Windows may offer the package again after it has been removed. Use the pause or defer controls that your edition and administrator policy provide while you check for a corrected release. A managed PC may reinstall updates by policy, so contact the administrator instead of changing policy settings yourself.
Sign-in still fails after Repair and Reset
At that point, the evidence does not establish that Windows Update is the cause. Check the exact error text, test whether another Microsoft account behaves differently, and verify whether the failure is limited to Gaming Services (including the two documented error codes). Keep the removed-update record so support staff can correlate it with the system timeline.
Security and support considerations
Removing a security update trades short-term functionality for exposure to vulnerabilities addressed by that update. The safest rollback sequence is: document the KB, remove it only to confirm the suspected regression, test the Xbox app, and then seek a corrected package or official vendor guidance. Do not treat a successful sign-in as evidence that the update can remain absent permanently.
For Windows 10, the October 14, 2025 end-of-support date is especially important: free security fixes and technical assistance are no longer supplied after that date. A rollback on an unsupported installation should be considered a temporary diagnostic action while moving to a supported Windows release or an approved alternative.
Quick Recap
A concise decision checklist
- Windows usable: identify the KB in Update history and uninstall that item from Settings.
- Windows inaccessible: open WinRE and select the matching latest quality- or feature-update removal.
- After restart: test the same Xbox account and record whether the result changed.
- No change: use Xbox app Repair, then Reset only if offered and necessary.
- Errors 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F: consider the specific Gaming Services guidance, not a generic sign-in script.
- Security update removed: look for a corrected update or support guidance and avoid leaving the device unpatched.
