To remove one Steam game, open its entry in the Steam Library and use the game-level uninstall command, then inspect the Steam library folder that contained it for any clearly identified leftovers. Do not use Windows or macOS tools that uninstall the Steam client unless you intend to remove Steam and potentially every installed game.
Before deleting anything manually, check saves, mods, screenshots, configurations, Workshop content and Steam Cloud status. A game’s installation files, local saves and cloud data may be stored in different locations.

First decide what you are removing
Steam has three different cleanup tasks that are often confused:
| Task | What it removes | Typical action | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall one game | That title’s installed game content from its Steam library | Use the game’s Library entry and its uninstall command | Deleting saves, mods or custom files that you meant to keep |
| Remove leftovers for one game | Clearly identifiable folders or files left after the game uninstall | Inspect the matching library and delete only game-specific data | Deleting shared Steam files or another game’s data |
| Uninstall the Steam client | Steam itself and, on Windows, installed game content in the Steam installation directory | Use the operating system’s client-uninstall process | Loss of all locally installed games and Steam data |
This article covers the first two rows. Steam’s Windows support page describes client removal separately: “This process will remove Steam and any installed game content from your machine.” That warning does not mean that uninstalling one game from its Library entry removes every Steam file.

Back up anything you may need before uninstalling
A Steam uninstall is not a reliable backup procedure. Decide what should survive before confirming removal.
- Save games: Some titles use Steam Cloud; others save locally outside the game folder. Developers choose the save location, and a common Windows location for non-Cloud saves is
C:Users<Windows user name>DocumentsMy Games, but it is not universal. - Steam Cloud data: Cloud synchronization can contain saves, settings, profile statistics and other user-specific data. Check that synchronization has completed and resolve any conflict prompt before deleting local files.
- Mods and custom files: Mod managers, manually installed mods, reshade files, custom maps and configuration edits may not be restored by reinstalling.
- Screenshots and recordings: These may be stored outside the game’s main installation directory, depending on how they were created.
- Reinstallation data: If you may reinstall soon, preserving the game folder or a backup can avoid downloading everything again. Keep a backup outside the Steam directory if you are removing the client.
Do not assume that a cloud copy makes every local file safe to delete. Steam’s support information notes that local and cloud files can differ and may produce a conflict dialog.
Uninstall one game from the Steam Library
Current Steam client workflow
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Select the game you want to remove. Confirm that it is the correct title, especially when several editions or test branches are installed.
- Open the game’s management menu. Depending on the current client layout, this is available from the Library entry’s context menu or the game’s management controls.
- Choose the game-level option that uninstalls or removes local content, then read the confirmation dialog and approve it.
- Wait for Steam to finish. The title should no longer be shown as installed and the local download should be released.
An older official Steam game manual calls the command “Delete Local Content…”. That wording is older and may not match the current client, so use the present game-level uninstall option rather than relying on an exact label. Do not select an operating-system command that removes Steam itself.

The game-level operation targets the installed title. It does not establish that every save, configuration, Workshop item, mod, screenshot or cloud copy has been deleted. Shared Steam components can also remain because other games may use them.
Find the library folder that contained the game
Steam can use multiple library folders. The documented default Windows game directory is:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon
That is only a default. A game may instead be in another drive or a custom library created in Steam’s storage settings. Check the client’s storage/library locations and identify the library that actually held the title before browsing in File Explorer or Finder.
Windows
In the matching library, the game’s installation directory is normally a subfolder of steamappscommon. Folder names can differ from the store title, particularly for editions, launchers or games with short internal names. Use the game’s known install location rather than deleting a folder based only on a similar name.

macOS
Steam libraries can be on the Mac’s internal storage or another configured volume. Use the library location shown by Steam rather than assuming that the application’s location in /Applications is where the game files are stored.
Linux and Steam Deck
Libraries may be on the internal drive, a mounted disk or a removable card. Compatibility data and non-Cloud saves can be game-specific, and the available official material does not establish a universal set of files that every per-game uninstall removes. Back up desired data and inspect only the title’s own directory.
Remove only confirmed leftovers
After Steam reports that the game is uninstalled, close Steam before changing files. Steam warns that forcibly closing the client while it is writing can corrupt library or installation information.
- Exit Steam completely, not merely the Library window. Wait for its background process to close.
- Open the library folder you identified earlier.
- Look for a folder that clearly belongs to the uninstalled game. Check its contents and modified date if the name is ambiguous.
- Move that one folder to the operating system’s Trash or Recycle Bin first. Empty it only after confirming that no needed saves, mods or custom files are inside.
- Leave the parent
steamapps, common, userdataand Steam folders intact. - Reopen Steam and allow it to refresh the Library. If it still shows the title as installed, use Steam’s own status and storage information before deleting anything else.
This narrow cleanup is based on Steam’s documented directory layout. It is not a recommendation to delete an entire library or Steam installation. Shared redistributables, Workshop data and user data may serve other games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhere Steam Cloud and local saves may be stored
Steam Cloud’s local userdata paths
Steam documents these default local locations for Cloud data:
| Platform | Default local userdata location | How it is organized |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
Steam account ID folders and game appID folders |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
Steam account ID folders and game appID folders |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Steam account ID folders and game appID folders |
These are data locations, not instructions to erase them. Deleting the entire userdata directory can affect multiple games and accounts. If you need to remove one title’s user data, first identify its appID and confirm what each subfolder contains; keep a backup if there is any uncertainty.
Non-Cloud saves and profiles
Games that do not use Steam Cloud may save under Documents, the user profile, an application-support directory or a publisher-specific location. Steam’s moving guidance specifically mentions DocumentsMy Games as a common Windows location for third-party saves, while warning that developers decide where files are stored. Search the game’s official support documentation for its exact path before deleting anything outside the installation folder.

Use the appID carefully when checking userdata
The numbered folders under userdata are not human-readable game names. Steam organizes them first by account ID and then by the game’s numeric appID. If you are trying to remove one game’s settings, verify the appID from the game’s Steam URL or its manifest rather than guessing from a folder number. Even then, inspect the contents before deleting: a single account folder can contain data for many titles, and some files may be shared by tools or multiple installations.
If you are uncertain, leave the userdata folder alone and remove only the confirmed installation directory. Reclaiming several gigabytes from steamappscommon is safer than trying to purge unidentified account data.
Keep files for a later reinstall or delete them to reclaim space
| Your goal | Recommended handling |
|---|---|
| Reinstall later without losing custom work | Back up the game folder, saves, mods and configurations to a location outside the Steam directory. Keep the library folder configured so Steam can recognize files if you restore them. |
| Free disk space permanently | Uninstall through Steam, then remove only the confirmed game-specific folder and any separately identified files you no longer need. |
| Move the game to another drive | Use Steam’s storage/library tools or move the library carefully; do not manually rename or delete parent directories while Steam is running. |
| Preserve all installed games while removing Steam | Follow Steam’s client-removal instructions and move or back up steamapps before running the Windows uninstaller. On macOS, follow the choice about retaining SteamApps. |
Steam does not recommend using an external hard drive as the active game-installation location because connection and performance problems can occur. An external drive can still be used as a backup destination when its reliability and capacity are appropriate.
When backing up, preserve the folder structure and note which library it came from. A loose collection of executable files may not be enough for Steam to recognize an installation later. If the objective is only to save personal work, prioritize saves and configuration files; if the objective is to avoid another download, preserve the complete game directory as well.
If the folder remains or Steam says the game is installed
A folder remains after uninstall
Confirm that it is in the library used by the title and that the game-level uninstall completed. If the folder contains only identifiable game files and you no longer need them, remove that folder while Steam is closed. If it contains saves, mods or files shared with another tool, preserve or review those contents first.

Steam shows the game as uninstalled but files remain
Steam can leave files that it does not manage as part of the core installation. Check for Workshop, mod-manager or launcher directories before deleting them. The sources do not establish a universal cleanup list for third-party launchers, so consult the game’s own support material.
Steam shows the game as installed but files are missing
Do not immediately delete the remaining library. Steam’s support guidance explains that a library can be added again and that existing game folders may be recognized when Steam is pointed to the correct location. Re-add or select the proper library in Steam’s storage settings, then let the client discover the files. If the installation is damaged, use the verification procedure below.

When you actually want to uninstall Steam
Windows client removal
Windows Settings > Apps is for removing the Steam client, not for uninstalling one title. Steam’s Windows instructions are written for Windows 10 and advise exiting Steam first. If you want to preserve installed games, move steamapps outside the Steam folder before running the client uninstaller. The uninstaller deletes the Steam installation directory and installed game content; it can also remove other data placed in that directory. Do not run it when Steam was installed directly into a folder containing unrelated files.
macOS client removal
Steam states: “Just dragging the Steam program to the Trash will not fully uninstall Steam.” To remove the client, quit Steam, drag the application from /Applications to the Trash, then inspect:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam
If you want to retain game data, Steam’s Mac directions say to remove the files and folders inside that Steam directory except SteamApps. If you want all Steam data gone, delete the entire Steam folder, then empty the Trash. These are client-removal steps and are unnecessary when you are removing only one game.
Repair instead of uninstalling when the installation is damaged
If your real problem is crashes, missing files or a failed update, deleting the game may be unnecessary. In Steam, open Library, open the game’s Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Steam may leave some local configuration files that fail verification; its instructions note that this can be expected and those files should not automatically be replaced.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using Windows Settings or macOS Finder to remove Steam when you intended to remove one game.
- Deleting the whole Steam folder,
steamapps, commonoruserdatato reclaim space from one title. - Assuming every save is in the game’s installation folder or protected by Steam Cloud.
- Deleting a similarly named folder from the wrong library or another drive.
- Manually editing the registry as routine game cleanup. Steam discusses registry removal only as part of manual client removal and warns that it requires extreme care.
- Forcing Steam closed while it is writing library data.
- Removing launcher, mod or custom-content folders without checking the game or tool that created them.
Final checklist
- Confirm that you are removing one game, not the Steam client.
- Back up saves, mods, screenshots and configurations you may want later.
- Check Steam Cloud synchronization and any conflict dialog.
- Use the game’s Library-level uninstall command.
- Identify the actual library folder; do not assume the default Windows path.
- Close Steam before manual cleanup.
- Delete only a clearly identified game-specific leftover folder.
- Leave shared directories and other games’ data untouched.
- If Steam still reports an installation, repair or re-add the library instead of deleting blindly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling a Steam game delete my saves?
Not necessarily. Steam Cloud data and non-Cloud saves may be stored outside the installation folder, and save locations vary by game. Confirm synchronization, resolve any cloud conflict, and back up local saves before deleting folders.
Where are Steam Cloud files stored locally?
Steam lists Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata, macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata, and Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata. Account IDs and appIDs organize the subfolders. Do not delete the entire userdata directory for one game.

Can I keep the files and reinstall later?
Yes. Back up the complete game folder, saves and custom files outside the Steam directory. If Steam later fails to see the files, add or select the library that contains them so the client can recognize the existing installation.
Is deleting the Steam folder a way to remove one game?
No. Deleting Steam folders can affect the client, other games, shared components and user data. Use the game’s Library uninstall command and narrow cleanup instead.
How do I remove Steam completely on Windows?
Exit Steam and use Windows Settings > Apps for the client. Steam warns that its uninstaller removes the Steam installation directory and installed game content. Move or back up steamapps first if you need to preserve games, and do not use the uninstaller when unrelated data is inside that directory.
Does dragging Steam to the Trash remove it completely on a Mac?
No. Steam says: “Just dragging the Steam program to the Trash will not fully uninstall Steam.” Quit Steam, remove the application, then address ~/Library/Application Support/Steam, choosing whether to retain SteamApps.
Should I uninstall a game if it is crashing?
Try Steam’s Library > game Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files first. Verification can leave some local configuration files untouched, which Steam says may be expected.
The Bottom Line
Use Steam’s Library-level uninstall for one title, protect saves and custom files first, then remove only a confirmed game-specific folder from the correct library with Steam closed. Uninstalling the Steam client is a separate, broader operation that can remove installed game content.
