If a Windows update is followed by crashes, failed sign-ins, missing hardware, blue screens, or an inability to start Windows, remove the specific update from Update history while Windows still runs. If the computer will not boot, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Back up important files first, and have the BitLocker recovery key ready if the drive is encrypted. Removing an update can restore stability, but it can also remove security fixes, so treat it as a targeted emergency repair rather than routine maintenance.
Decide whether an update is a credible cause
Open the update history and compare the installation time with the first appearance of the problem. A quality update is a regular cumulative Windows patch; a feature update is a larger version upgrade. If the symptoms began immediately after one of these entries, removal is a reasonable troubleshooting test. The timing is evidence to investigate, not proof that the update caused the failure: drivers, applications, failing hardware, and unrelated configuration changes can produce the same symptoms.

Record the update’s name and knowledge-base number if one is shown. Take a photograph or write down the entry before removing it so you can identify it later if Microsoft publishes a corrected package. Disconnecting from the internet is not normally necessary for the uninstall itself, but it can prevent an immediately offered reinstall while you diagnose the machine.

Prepare safely before changing recovery state
Protect your files
Copy documents, photos, browser exports, and any other irreplaceable data to an external disk or a trusted cloud location. If Windows is unstable, prioritize files that exist only on the affected computer. Do not begin a reset or reinstall until the backup can be opened from another device.

Locate the BitLocker recovery key
On an encrypted computer, WinRE may ask for the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key before it will modify the installation. Find the key in the Microsoft account or organizational account that manages the device, a saved printout, or your company’s recovery-key system. A key from a different computer will not unlock this installation. If the PC belongs to work or school, contact the administrator before proceeding.
Check power and access
Connect a laptop to AC power. Save open work and close applications if Windows still starts. Uninstalling a package normally requires an administrator account; a standard user may be prompted for administrator credentials. Do not force a shutdown while the removal is progressing.
Uninstall the update when Windows still starts
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update, then Update history.
- Scroll to the related section and choose Uninstall updates.
- Find the update that matches the recorded installation date and knowledge-base number.
- Select Uninstall, confirm the prompt, and allow Windows to restart.
Windows may show separate entries for quality and feature updates. Remove only the package that is a plausible trigger; removing several at once makes it harder to identify the cause and increases exposure to missing fixes.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Choose Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select View update history, then Uninstall updates.
- Select the suspected update, choose Uninstall, and restart when prompted.
The two versions use different Settings paths, but the final uninstall window is similar. Some entries cannot be removed; Windows disables the command when a package is permanent or required by the servicing stack.
After the restart
Test the exact failure that prompted the rollback: launch the affected application, connect the missing device, or perform the task that previously crashed. Check Settings > Windows Update for a pending restart or a replacement package. Keep notes about the result and the date. If the problem remains unchanged, reinstalling more updates is unlikely to help; move to the repair options below.
Uninstall an update when Windows will not boot
Use WinRE when normal startup fails, the machine loops through automatic repair, or the sign-in screen cannot be reached.
Open WinRE from Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- After the blue recovery screen appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
Open WinRE from Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
Use automatic recovery if Settings is inaccessible
Windows can enter WinRE automatically after repeated failed starts. Turn the computer on and allow the failed-start recovery process to appear; do not interrupt it repeatedly. If it presents Advanced options, follow the same path. A Windows recovery drive or installation media can also boot the computer into recovery tools when the internal recovery environment is damaged.

Choose the right rollback
WinRE normally offers Uninstall latest quality update and Uninstall latest feature update. Choose the one that corresponds to the installation you recorded. A quality-update removal targets the most recent cumulative patch; a feature-update removal rolls back a broader version change and may take longer. Enter the BitLocker key if requested, confirm the operation, and let the computer restart without pressing the power button.

Security-update removal requires a higher bar
Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ states, “We don’t recommend that you remove any installed updates,” and notes that not every update can be removed. Security guidance published October 14, 2024 (KB5040677) warns that uninstalling a security update can create wider security exposure and a potential data-loss risk.
Use this decision rule: remove a security update only when the failure is serious, the update is a credible trigger, and a supported repair path has been considered. Keep the device behind a firewall, avoid sensitive activity while it lacks the fix, use current security software, and install a corrected update as soon as Microsoft makes one available. On a managed work or school computer, involve trusted IT support; administrators may have a tested mitigation or an approved replacement package.
Choose the least disruptive recovery option
Microsoft’s recovery guidance moves from changes that preserve the most of your installation to actions that replace more of it. The table shows what each option changes and when it fits.

If uninstalling is unavailable or does not solve the problem
Run the appropriate built-in troubleshooter
Use Windows’ available troubleshooters for the symptom you can reproduce, such as network, audio, hardware, or Windows Update failures. A troubleshooter may repair a service or configuration without rolling back the operating system. Record any error code it returns; an error code is more useful to support staff than a description such as “the update broke it.”
Reinstall the current Windows 11 version
On supported Windows 11 installations, look under Settings > System > Recovery for Fix problems using Windows Update. Selecting Reinstall now downloads and reinstalls the same Windows version, repairing system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. Keep the computer connected to power and the internet until it finishes. The option may be absent on an edition, configuration, or managed device that does not support it.
Use System Restore
Choose System Restore from Windows or from WinRE > Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Select a restore point created before the symptoms began, review the affected programs, and confirm. Restore points are not guaranteed to exist, and restoring one can remove drivers or applications installed afterward, so read the impact list before proceeding.
Go back after a feature upgrade
If the problem started with a recent version upgrade rather than a monthly quality patch, use the available Go back option in Settings > System > Recovery or its WinRE equivalent. Windows keeps rollback files only for a limited period and may remove the option after cleanup, so do not delay if this is the correct match for the failure.
Repair component and system files from an elevated Command Prompt
Use these commands only if you are comfortable with an administrator Command Prompt and have a backup. In Windows, search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and execute the following command first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses for servicing; System File Checker then checks protected system files. Let each command reach completion. Restart and test the original symptom. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found or SFC cannot repair files, stop repeating the commands and use a supported repair reinstall or recovery option instead.
Reset or reinstall only after less disruptive paths fail
Reset this PC is a major escalation. The keep-files mode retains personal files but removes applications and many settings; the remove-everything mode is suitable only when you have a verified backup and intend to start over. Installation media can repair or replace Windows when the internal recovery tools are damaged, but a clean installation can erase the system drive. Record device drivers, application installers, license information, and encryption details before choosing either route.

The update is not listed
Windows may hide a package that is permanent, superseded, bundled into another update, or already removed during servicing. Do not delete random files from the Windows directory. Use System Restore, the Windows 11 repair reinstall, or support documentation for the specific error instead.
Uninstall fails with an error
Restart once, reconnect stable power, and retry from the same recovery path. If the failure repeats, capture the exact code and the update identifier. A failed rollback can indicate component-store corruption or insufficient recovery access; DISM and SFC, followed by a repair reinstall, are safer than repeatedly forcing shutdowns.
The update returns
Windows Update may offer the same package again after it is removed. Pause updates temporarily while you investigate, then install the replacement or corrected package when available. Leaving a security update absent indefinitely increases exposure and is not a permanent fix.
WinRE asks for a key you do not have
Stop rather than guessing. A BitLocker recovery key is unique to the encrypted volume. Retrieve it from the account or organization that manages the PC; if it cannot be recovered, professional support may be the only way to avoid data loss.
Recovery media and the role of a USB drive
Microsoft’s recovery-drive procedure creates removable recovery media for a computer that needs repair or cannot boot. A blank USB flash drive is therefore useful as a fallback, especially before a major upgrade or when you maintain several PCs. It is not required for the ordinary Settings uninstall path, and Microsoft does not specify a universal capacity, speed, or brand for this purpose. Creating recovery media can erase the USB drive, so use an empty drive and keep important files elsewhere.

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Uninstalling a problematic package can still address a local failure, but it cannot restore security maintenance that the operating system no longer receives. Plan a supported migration or an organization-approved alternative rather than relying on repeated rollbacks.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the first symptom and compare its time with Update history.
- Back up irreplaceable files and obtain the BitLocker recovery key before using WinRE or reset tools.
- If Windows starts, use the version-specific Settings path and remove only the credible update.
- If Windows does not start, use WinRE’s Uninstall Updates option and select the matching quality or feature rollback.
- Treat a security-update removal as an emergency measure; arrange a fixed update or IT-approved mitigation.
- If removal is blocked or ineffective, progress from troubleshooters to Windows 11 repair reinstall, System Restore, version rollback, DISM/SFC, and only then reset or installation media.
- Document the update identifier, error codes, actions, and results so the next repair decision is based on evidence.
These steps keep the rollback narrow when possible, preserve a route back through WinRE, and prevent a temporary stability fix from becoming an unplanned security or data-loss incident.
