If a Galaxy phone or tablet started misbehaving immediately after you changed a setting, first return to that exact control and undo it. If you cannot identify the change, use Samsung’s non-destructive Reset all settings command. It restores default device settings while keeping apps and personal data. Use a narrower network reset for connection problems, reset one app when only that app fails, test in Safe mode when a downloaded app may be responsible, and reserve Factory data reset for the final, destructive step.
Choose the least destructive remedy first
A setting reset is not a time machine. Samsung describes these commands as restoring defaults, not as recovering an exact snapshot of the configuration you had before the change. That distinction matters: you may need to choose preferences again afterward.

| Option | Use it when | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse the specific control | You remember which setting changed | Only that behavior is changed back; this is the most targeted approach. |
| Reset all settings | The cause is unclear, or reversing one control did not help | Samsung says default device settings are restored without erasing apps or personal data. |
| Reset one app | A single app is unresponsive or behaving incorrectly | Clearing cache removes temporary files; clearing data returns that app to its defaults and removes data saved in it. |
| Reset mobile network settings | Calls, mobile data, or cellular registration are failing | Only mobile-network configuration is reset; apps and personal files remain. |
| Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings | Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections fail | Wireless connection settings are cleared; saved networks and paired accessories may need to be set up again. |
| Safe mode | You suspect a downloaded app rather than a device setting | Downloaded apps are temporarily disabled so you can compare the phone’s behavior with original software only. |
| Factory data reset | All other remedies failed and you accept erasing the device | Personal data is removed and the device returns to factory condition. Back up first. |
Menu wording and placement differ by Galaxy model and One UI version. The paths below match Samsung’s current US support guidance, but your screen can look different. If a path does not match, open Settings, tap the search icon, and search for Reset, Clear cache, or Safe mode. Read the confirmation screen before accepting any command.

When you know what you changed, do not start with a phone-wide reset. Open Settings and use its search field with a distinctive word from the control—for example, “notification,” “display,” “accessibility,” “battery,” “permission,” or “default app.” Tap the matching result, restore the previous value, and test the feature immediately.

Record the original value before experimenting
- If the old value is visible in a screenshot, note it before changing anything else.
- Change one control at a time, then test. Changing several options together makes the cause harder to identify.
- Restart the device after a change that affects system behavior, then test again.
- If the setting has an on/off switch, check both the switch and any sub-options beneath it; a parent switch can remain enabled while a child option causes the symptom.
When you cannot find the control
Settings search is more reliable than guessing through category names because Samsung reorganizes menus between models and software releases. Search for the feature that stopped working as well as for “reset.” If the result opens an app-specific page, change that app there rather than changing a global setting.
2. Use Reset all settings when the cause is unclear
Samsung’s broad, non-data-erasing fallback is Settings > General management > Reset > Reset all settings. On a model with different labels, search Settings for “Reset all settings.” This command restores the phone or tablet’s device settings to defaults.
What Samsung says this reset preserves
- Installed apps and personal data remain on the device.
- Accounts remain signed in according to Samsung’s description of the command.
- Security and language settings are not erased.
- Settings belonging to downloaded apps are not reset by this device-level command.
Because this is a defaults reset rather than a saved-state rollback, expect to review preferences such as sound, display behavior, connection choices, and other system options afterward. The confirmation page is the authority for your particular model; stop if it says that personal data or accounts will be removed.
Safe procedure
- Charge the device enough to complete a restart and close any work in progress.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management, then Reset. If you do not see those labels, use Settings search for Reset.
- Select Reset all settings, not Factory data reset.
- Read every warning, authenticate if requested, and confirm only when the text says apps and personal data will remain.
- After the restart, reproduce the original symptom before changing additional settings. This tells you whether the reset solved it.
3. Match a network problem to the correct network reset
Do not reset every device setting when the failure is limited to one type of connection. Samsung separates cellular configuration from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth configuration.

| Symptom | Command to search for | Afterward |
|---|---|---|
| No mobile service, calls fail, or mobile data will not connect | Reset mobile network settings | Test cellular service again. Your carrier-related network configuration is rebuilt from defaults. |
| Wi-Fi will not join or repeatedly disconnects | Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings | Reconnect to each required Wi-Fi network and enter its password again if prompted. |
| A Bluetooth accessory will not pair or stay connected | Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings | Pair headphones, cars, watches, and other accessories again. |
Mobile network reset
Open Settings and search for Reset mobile network settings. On many models it appears under General management > Reset. Confirm the command after checking the warning. This is the appropriate branch for a mobile-connection symptom, not for a Wi-Fi-only failure.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth reset
Search Settings for Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, or look under the Reset menu. Confirm, then set up the affected wireless connections again. Have Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairing devices available before starting, especially if the phone is used for work or two-factor authentication.
4. Repair one troublesome app instead of the whole phone
If the problem occurs in only one app, use that app’s storage controls. A device-wide reset will not repair corrupted app data as precisely as an app reset.

Clear data only when you accept an app reset
From the same Storage screen, Clear data returns the app to its default settings. Samsung warns that this removes personal settings or data saved inside that app. You may be signed out, lose offline files or drafts stored only in the app, and need to configure it again. Back up or sync anything important within the app before tapping the command. Some system apps do not offer a Clear data button.
Clearing app data changes that app; it does not reset the Galaxy’s other settings. If several unrelated apps fail in the same way, return to the device-level troubleshooting branches instead.
5. Use Safe mode to test whether a downloaded app is involved
Safe mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent repair. Samsung says it disables all downloaded apps and loads only the original software that came with the phone or tablet. If the symptom disappears in Safe mode, a downloaded app is the likely source; if it remains, the cause is less likely to be a downloaded app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEnter and test Safe mode
Galaxy entry steps vary by model and software version. Use the Safe mode option shown by your device’s restart or power menu, or search Settings and Samsung’s on-device help for the exact method. On many Galaxy models, powering off, turning the device on, and holding Volume down while the Samsung logo appears starts Safe mode; the words “Safe mode” then appear on the screen. If your model behaves differently, do not repeatedly force-restart it—use the method displayed for that model.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Before entering Safe mode, note the exact symptom and the steps that reproduce it.
- Enter Safe mode and repeat those steps using only the original apps.
- Test long enough to distinguish an intermittent problem from a temporary one.
- If the issue is absent, restart normally and uninstall recently added or updated apps one at a time, testing after each removal.
Exit Safe mode
Power the device off and restart it normally. Downloaded apps should be available again. If the phone keeps returning to Safe mode, check whether the Volume down button is being held or pressed by a case during startup.
6. Keep Factory data reset as the last resort
Factory data reset is fundamentally different from Reset all settings. Samsung says it removes personal data and returns the device to factory settings. Use it only after targeted reversal, the appropriate settings reset, app troubleshooting, and Safe mode testing have failed—or when you are intentionally preparing the device for a clean start.
Back up before erasing anything
- Use Samsung Smart Switch or a cloud account to copy contacts, photos, messages, and other data you need.
- Samsung troubleshooting guidance also mentions backing up to an SD card or USB drive. A USB-C flash drive can be useful for local copies, but compatibility depends on your Galaxy model, port, and adapter; it is optional, not a requirement.
- Open important files from the backup destination or verify the cloud sync status. A backup that was never completed cannot be restored.
- Make sure you know the Google and Samsung account credentials associated with the device. A reset may require account credentials during setup.
- Export app-specific information that is not automatically synchronized, such as authenticator recovery codes, locally stored notes, or game saves.
Start the reset only after checking the warning
- Open Settings and search for Factory data reset. On many models the route is General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Review the list of accounts, apps, and personal content that will be removed.
- Confirm that the displayed command says Factory data reset, not Reset all settings.
- Authenticate when asked, tap the final confirmation, and leave the device connected to power until it finishes.
- During setup, restore only the backup you verified. Test the original problem before reinstalling every downloaded app; adding apps in stages makes a recurring software conflict easier to identify.
If the device cannot reach Settings, do not guess at recovery-button combinations from another Galaxy model. Button procedures and security screens vary. Use Samsung’s instructions for the exact model or obtain qualified service, particularly when the device is encrypted or repeatedly restarting.

What to do when the first remedy does not work
The reset option is missing
Search Settings for the full phrase, including “all settings,” “mobile network,” or “Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.” A carrier edition, tablet, or older One UI release may place the command under a different heading. Compare the confirmation wording rather than relying on the menu location alone.

The symptom continues after Reset all settings
Repeat the test without immediately changing other options. Then narrow the diagnosis: use the matching network reset for a connection-only problem, clear cache for one affected app, or run Safe mode if a downloaded app is plausible. A settings reset cannot repair a damaged display, battery, charging port, storage device, or other physical component.
The problem appears only after reinstalling an app
Record which app was installed immediately before the symptom returned. Uninstall it, restart normally, and test again. If the issue disappears, keep the app removed until its developer supplies a compatible update; avoid wiping the entire phone for a problem that one uninstall resolves.
You are unsure whether data will be erased
Stop at the confirmation screen and read the exact description. Reset all settings and the two network resets are intended to preserve apps and personal data, while Factory data reset is the erase command. Samsung notes that labels and layouts vary, so the on-screen warning on your device takes priority.

A practical decision path
- Know the changed control? Reverse it and test.
- Cause unknown or one reversal failed? Choose Reset all settings after verifying its non-erasing confirmation.
- Only cellular service fails? Use Reset mobile network settings.
- Only Wi-Fi or Bluetooth fails? Use Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, then reconnect devices.
- Only one app fails? Clear its cache; clear its data only after protecting the app’s saved information.
- Failure disappears in Safe mode? Remove downloaded apps methodically after restarting normally.
- Nothing above works? Back up and consider Factory data reset, accepting that personal data will be erased.
These steps move from the smallest possible change to the largest. They also leave a useful diagnostic trail: the first remedy that changes the symptom tells you whether the cause was a single preference, a connection profile, app data, a downloaded app, or the device software itself.
