How to Understand GST and YouTube Livestream Earnings in India

Short answer: YouTube earnings and Indian GST are separate questions. YouTube Studio revenue is an estimate; finalized earnings appear in AdSense for YouTube and are paid on YouTube’s schedule if account conditions are met. For GST, an AdSense payment is not automatically an export of services—or automatically subject to a particular GST rate—just because it comes from a foreign platform. The contract, recipient, place of supply, payment trail, other creator income and registration position all matter.

This is general information, not a conclusion about any particular creator. Review the actual agreements, statements, remittance records and income mix before deciding how GST applies.

What YouTube means by “earnings”

YouTube Studio’s revenue figures are estimates, not necessarily the final amount credited to your payment account. YouTube says estimates may be adjusted, including for invalid traffic, Content ID claims or disputes, and certain ad campaign types. Its guidance states: “Your finalized earnings are only visible in your AdSense for YouTube account.” See YouTube’s earnings overview.

Estimate, finalized earnings and payment are different stages

  1. Estimated revenue: YouTube Analytics displays an estimate that may change.
  2. Finalized earnings: YouTube says the previous month’s finalized earnings are generally added to the AdSense for YouTube balance between the 7th and 12th of the following month.
  3. Payment: Payment is generally issued by the 21st or 26th if the account has met its payment threshold and no holds apply. These are general platform timelines, not guaranteed dates for every account or country. Check the AdSense for YouTube Transactions page for the finalized amount and any tax deductions. YouTube’s payment guidance explains the process.

For bookkeeping and a GST review, do not treat a Studio estimate, finalized account entry and bank credit as interchangeable. Reconcile them with the relevant agreement, deductions and receipt records.

Revenue shares are not GST rates

YouTube’s revenue shares vary by monetization module: 70% of net revenues for eligible channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks under the Commerce Product Module; 55% of net revenues for eligible Watch Page ads; and 45% of the revenue allocated through the Shorts Creator Pool for Shorts Feed Ads. These are platform revenue-share terms, not an India-specific GST rate or one universal livestream percentage. Check the module agreement you accepted on YouTube’s earnings overview.

YouTube also says transaction taxes such as sales tax, VAT and GST are not revenue to Google and are not included in the partner revenue-share calculation. That platform accounting statement does not determine whether you, as an Indian creator, have a GST liability.

When can YouTube earnings qualify as an export of services?

The CBIC’s export-of-services FAQ sets out five conditions to assess together. The supplier must be located in India; the recipient must be outside India; the place of supply must be outside India; payment must be received in convertible foreign exchange; and the supplier and recipient must not merely be establishments of the same person under the relevant IGST Act provision. See the CBIC Sectoral FAQs.

That test is why “YouTube paid me” or “the income is foreign” does not, by itself, establish the GST result. You need to identify the contracting entity and recipient, determine the applicable service and place-of-supply treatment, and document how payment was received.

Check the actual payment route

The GST Council lists Circular No. 202/14/2023-GST, dated 27 October 2023, as a clarification concerning the convertible-foreign-exchange condition in section 2(6) of the IGST Act. The circular listing does not settle every YouTube payout route. Do not assume that an INR settlement, an intermediary bank conversion or a payment-provider route either satisfies or fails the condition without checking the applicable circular and your own remittance evidence. See the GST Council circular listing.

Does YouTube AdSense revenue count towards the GST registration threshold in India?

The CBIC FAQ gives general guidance of a ₹20 lakh aggregate-turnover threshold for service providers, reduced to ₹10 lakh in specified special-category states. It also says, in an export-only FAQ answer, that registration is needed to claim refunds because exports are zero-rated. These are general FAQ statements, not a complete determination for every creator. Check current rules against your state, supplies, registration status and whether you are seeking a refund. See the CBIC Frequently Asked Questions.

So the practical answer is not “all AdSense is outside the threshold” or “every AdSense payout triggers registration.” First classify the receipt and assess it under the current aggregate-turnover rules alongside your other supplies. Whether the AdSense arrangement qualifies as an export, and what that means for registration or a refund, depends on the facts and applicable rules.

Do not treat all creator income as one GST category

A YouTube channel can generate receipts beyond platform ad monetization. Each stream can involve a different customer or recipient, service, place-of-supply analysis and form of consideration. An ICAI Eastern India Regional Council study guide uses creator-income examples to raise these issues; it is educational material, not a binding ruling. Its creator-income study guide discusses examples including sponsorships, affiliate commissions, barter, merchandise and digital products.

Receipt type Questions to document
AdSense or other platform monetization Which agreement and contracting entity apply? Who is the recipient? What are the finalized earnings, deductions, payment route and currency evidence?
Sponsorship or promotional work Who hired you and received the service, where are they located, and what did the contract require? Domestic and foreign sponsors should be recorded separately.
Affiliate commission What service or activity earns the commission, who pays it, and could the arrangement raise a separate intermediary-classification question?
Free products or services for promotion Was something provided in exchange for promotional work? Record the arrangement and the goods or services involved; barter can require separate valuation analysis.
Merchandise or digital products Record these separately from advertising or platform receipts. The product, customer and transaction may lead to different GST questions.

The table identifies issues to review, not a GST classification for any individual transaction. The ICAI guide is useful for spotting distinct income types, but it does not decide their treatment for your channel.

A practical way to review your channel’s GST position

  1. Reconcile platform records. Save the AdSense for YouTube Transactions page, finalized earnings, deductions and payment records. Do not use an unreconciled Studio estimate as the sole basis for your records.
  2. Identify the contracting entity. Keep the applicable YouTube agreement and confirm the entity details rather than assuming the recipient from the YouTube brand. YouTube says it does not require invoices generally, but also says to follow local invoicing requirements where invoices are mandatory. Its account-type FAQ points users to contracting-entity details and tax information.
  3. Trace how payment arrived. Retain bank, remittance or payment-provider records showing the route, currency and any conversion evidence relevant to the export test.
  4. Separate other receipts. Keep sponsorship, affiliate, barter, merchandise and digital-product records distinct, including contracts and evidence of any non-cash consideration.
  5. Review turnover and registration facts. Compile aggregate turnover across your supplies, your state and existing GST registrations or returns. Check current threshold and refund rules rather than relying on a general threshold sentence in isolation.
  6. Get a fact-specific review where needed. If the recipient, place of supply, foreign-exchange condition, barter valuation or registration position is unclear, have a qualified Indian GST professional review the agreements and payment trail.

What a 24/7 livestream changes—and what it does not

Running prerecorded videos as a continuous YouTube live stream can change how a channel operates, but it does not by itself decide whether receipts are exports, how the service is classified or whether GST registration is required. Keep the GST analysis tied to the actual contracts, recipient, payment evidence and income categories.

If your channel uses a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos after you add your YouTube stream key; your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Its first day is free with no card, and its monthly plan is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. Using a cloud service does not change the GST questions above. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
