How to underclock and undervolt an ASIC miner to reduce power costs

Underclocking lowers the hashing chips’ frequency; undervolting lowers the voltage they receive. Most modern ASIC firmware couples both controls through a power target or tuning profile. The safe objective is not the lowest watt reading. It is the best sustainable combination of wall power, accepted hashrate, joules per terahash (J/TH), temperature, rejected shares and uptime.

Start with your miner’s supported low-power control, measure power at the wall, change one target at a time, and stop when instability or lost revenue costs more than the electricity saved. Settings are model-, firmware-, chip- and temperature-specific, so another miner’s voltage or frequency is not a reliable preset.

What underclocking and undervolting change

An ASIC performs hash calculations at a chip frequency. Lowering that frequency is underclocking: fewer calculations are attempted each second, so hashrate normally falls and power demand usually falls with it. Undervolting reduces the electrical potential supplied to the hashing chips. At a given frequency, less voltage can reduce power, but the chips have less operating margin and may produce errors or fail to remain synchronized.

Firmware typically exposes a power target, performance mode or tuning profile rather than independent controls for every electrical parameter. The controller then selects frequency and voltage combinations that it believes can meet that target. Some software can tune individual chips; other firmware offers only fixed modes such as Normal, Sleep and Low-power.

The efficiency metric is:

J/TH = wall watts ÷ accepted hashrate in TH/s.

For example, 3,500 W at 200 TH/s equals 17.5 J/TH. A lower watt figure is not automatically an improvement: if hashrate falls faster than power, J/TH worsens. Pool-reported accepted hashrate and rejected shares are more useful for judging productive work than a controller’s instantaneous estimate alone.

Why ASICs cannot share one universal undervolt setting

Braiins describes the practical limitation plainly: “Every ASIC is unique.” Manufacturing variation means chips on the same board, and two miners of the same model, can require different voltage and frequency combinations. A tuner that evaluates chips individually can keep stronger chips productive while backing off weaker ones. Stock OEM firmware may not expose those per-chip controls.

Temperature changes the result as well. A profile tuned in a cool room can become unstable during a hot afternoon, while a profile that is conservative in summer may leave efficiency unused in a cool season. Treat a profile as a measured operating point, not a permanent specification.

Before changing a setting

Identify the complete configuration

  • Record the exact miner model and board count.
  • Record the PSU model and its electrical ratings.
  • Note the installed firmware version and whether it is stock or third-party.
  • Write down the current mode, frequency level or power target.
  • Check warranty, service and hosting requirements before replacing firmware or operating outside the manufacturer’s documented modes.

Compatibility is model-specific. A mode or firmware package documented for one revision is not proof that it is safe or available on another.

Prepare safe operating conditions

  • Keep intake filters, heatsinks and fan paths clean.
  • Confirm that the PSU, circuit, connectors and cabling are rated for the miner’s maximum operating load.
  • Ensure exhaust air has a clear path and that the ambient temperature will remain within the miner and PSU specifications.
  • Do not bypass thermal, over-current or protective shutdowns to hold a target.

Capture a baseline you can trust

Run the miner in its current profile long enough for temperatures, fan control and pool statistics to settle. A short dashboard snapshot can hide ramping or intermittent board failures. Use a properly rated wall meter or facility power monitor; firmware watt estimates are useful telemetry but should not replace wall measurement.

Record the following in a log:

  • Wall watts and, if available, voltage and current.
  • Accepted hashrate and pool-reported hashrate.
  • Rejected-share count or percentage.
  • Hardware-error counters.
  • Per-board status and any missing board or chip.
  • Chip and inlet/outlet temperatures.
  • Fan speed, ambient temperature and the observation period.

Use the same pool, measurement point and observation duration when comparing profiles. Otherwise a changing network workload, ramping period or meter location can look like an efficiency improvement.

A safe, repeatable underclock and undervolt workflow

1. Start with the least invasive supported control

If your Bitmain firmware documents Low-power or Sleep mode for the exact model, use that before attempting an arbitrary frequency or voltage change. On a compatible Braiins OS installation, choose a conservative power target and let its tuner generate a profile. Do not assume that a mode shown in a menu is supported on every firmware revision; verify the model-specific documentation first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Change one variable or target at a time

If the interface offers a power target, lower it in a small step and allow ramping and autotuning to settle. If it offers frequency levels, select the next lower documented level. Avoid changing frequency, voltage, fan limits and thermal settings simultaneously: when the result changes, you will not know which adjustment caused it.

Do not copy a voltage from another miner. Chip quality, board condition, PSU behavior and temperature differ even between otherwise identical units.

3. Wait for a stable operating period

Judge a profile only after the tuner has finished ramping and the miner has reached a repeatable thermal state. Include enough time for pool statistics to become meaningful. If the miner cycles through tuning, wait until the selected profile is actually running rather than comparing a transient startup value.

4. Measure at the wall and at the pool

For each profile, calculate J/TH from measured wall watts and accepted TH/s. Compare that result with the miner’s reported wattage and efficiency fields. A discrepancy is expected because controller telemetry may estimate only miner consumption or may average readings differently from your meter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also compare rejected shares, hardware errors, board availability, temperatures and fan speed. A profile that saves 200 W but loses a board, increases rejected work or causes repeated restarts may be less profitable than the previous setting.

  • Please kindly note that the required input voltage for Bitmain Antminer S21++ 235t is 220V-277V. Wrong input voltage may probably cause miner damaged

5. Find the stability boundary

Continue only while the miner remains stable and the efficiency trade-off is worthwhile. Stop and raise the target slightly, or restore the previous profile, if you see reboots, a dropped board, rapidly rising hardware errors, overheating, a sustained hashrate loss or a rejected-share increase that outweighs the power saving.

6. Test through realistic temperature changes

Observe the profile during the warmest expected operating condition, not only immediately after tuning in a cool room. Braiins documents controlled ramping and notes that temperature differences during tuning materially affect outcomes. If temperatures rise later, dynamic performance scaling or a less aggressive target can protect stability.

7. Save and document the final profile

Record the mode or target, frequency and voltage information that the firmware exposes, wall watts, accepted TH/s, J/TH, temperatures, fan speed, rejected shares, hardware errors, ambient conditions and date. Keep a copy outside the miner so you can restore it after a firmware update, controller reset or seasonal temperature change.

Published operating points and what they show

Vendor figures illustrate the shape of the trade-off, but they are not guarantees for every machine. The figures below come from the named manufacturer or software vendor and should be treated as reference points.

Miner or example Operating point Power Efficiency or implication
Antminer S21, Bitmain 2025 product manual 200 TH/s 3,500 W 17.5 J/TH
Antminer S21, Bitmain 2025 product manual 175 TH/s 3,062 W About 17.5 J/TH
Antminer S21, Bitmain 2025 product manual 151 TH/s 2,642 W About 17.5 J/TH
Antminer S9 Low Power Mode, Bitmain Support 2018 13.88 TH/s 1,258 W About 90.6 J/TH when calculated from the published figures
Braiins-reported S19 example Efficiency range in its comparison Not given in the cited comparison 34 to 26 J/TH
Braiins-reported S21 example Efficiency range in its comparison Not given in the cited comparison 17.5 to 15.4 J/TH

The S21 entries show that a lower operating point can reduce absolute power while preserving the same published efficiency. The S9 figure demonstrates that a low-power mode can be a large performance compromise on an older design. Braiins’ S19 and S21 ranges are vendor-reported comparisons, not a promise that every unit will reach the lower number.

Firmware controls: stock modes versus autotuning

Bitmain stock firmware

Bitmain’s API documentation exposes fields for miner mode, frequency level, wattage and J/T. Depending on model and firmware revision, the user interface may provide only discrete Normal, Sleep and Low-power choices rather than arbitrary chip-by-chip voltage controls. Use the mode intended for your exact miner and monitor the resulting wall power and pool performance.

For the S9 Low Power Mode, Bitmain Support reports 13.88 TH/s at 1,258 W. The same support guidance warns: “If the miner appears to be running unstable or hashrate drops, turn the LPM off or flash back to the original firmware.” Treat that as a recovery instruction, not as permission to keep an unstable profile running.

Braiins OS and autotuning

On compatible hardware, Braiins documents arbitrary power targets, chip-level frequency and voltage autotuning, and dynamic performance scaling that can reduce power when temperatures rise. The tuner searches for settings per chip instead of applying one assumed voltage to the entire machine. Compatibility, installation method and available controls depend on the miner model and firmware version, so verify those details before changing software.

How to decide whether a lower target is actually cheaper

Convert the measured change into both energy and productive work. If a profile reduces wall power from P1 to P2 watts, the hourly energy saving is (P1 − P2) ÷ 1,000 kilowatt-hours. Compare that saving with the accepted-hashrate reduction and any additional downtime or rejected work.

For example, a 500 W reduction saves 0.5 kWh per hour while the miner runs. If the same adjustment removes a large share of accepted TH/s or causes frequent restarts, the electricity saving may not compensate for lost mining output. Use your actual electricity rate and pool results; a watt figure alone cannot answer the profitability question.

When operating at home or in a constrained facility, include noise and heat. Lower electrical input generally means less heat to remove, and a lower fan speed may reduce noise, but a struggling or overheating profile can drive fans harder and create more noise than a stable conservative setting.

Symptoms, causes and corrective actions

Symptom Likely interpretation Action
Repeated restarts The target is below the miner’s stable voltage/frequency margin, or power delivery is inadequate. Raise the target or restore the prior profile; verify PSU, connectors and circuit ratings.
One board disappears A board or its chips cannot sustain the selected operating point. Return to the last stable target, then retest more conservatively; inspect cooling and connections.
Hardware errors climb Voltage is too low for the selected frequency, or temperature has risen. Raise the target, reduce frequency, improve airflow and retest after temperatures settle.
Pool hashrate falls while dashboard looks normal Rejected work, tuning transients or intermittent errors are reducing accepted output. Check pool accepted and rejected shares over the same observation period; restore the previous profile if the loss persists.
Temperature increases after lowering power Fans, airflow or ambient conditions changed; lower power does not guarantee lower chip temperature. Clean filters, verify airflow and fan operation, and use a less aggressive target if thermal limits are approached.
Efficiency worsens despite lower watts Hashrate fell faster than power, so J/TH increased. Move back toward the prior target and compare accepted TH/s, not only watts.

Operating checks for long-term reliability

  • Review logs for restarts, board dropouts and rising hardware-error counters rather than checking only the current dashboard.
  • Recheck the profile when ambient temperature, dust loading or fan behavior changes.
  • After a firmware update, confirm that the mode, target and frequency values were preserved; do not assume they were.
  • Keep the original stable profile documented so recovery is quick.
  • Stay within the miner and PSU manufacturer’s electrical and thermal ratings.
  • Do not disable protective shutdowns or force a target that the controller is rejecting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run an Antminer in low-power mode?

Only if the exact model and installed firmware support that mode. Bitmain’s S9 documentation provides a Low Power Mode example, but the available modes and results vary by model and firmware revision. Enable the documented mode, then verify wall watts, accepted hashrate, errors and stability.

Should I lower voltage or frequency first?

Use the least invasive control your firmware provides. A documented low-power mode or conservative power target lets the controller coordinate voltage and frequency. If manual frequency control is the only supported option, make a small frequency change and measure before attempting any additional adjustment.

Why does my miner show better J/T while the pool shows less work?

J/T may be calculated from a short-term or estimated hashrate, while the pool reports accepted work over a longer interval and counts rejected shares. Compare wall watts with accepted TH/s over the same settled period and include error and restart data.

Is a lower voltage always safer because it uses less power?

No. Too little voltage for a selected frequency can produce hardware errors, rejected shares, board dropouts and restarts. Lower power is useful only while the miner remains stable and productive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a new profile becomes unstable?

Stop the test, raise the power target or restore the last known-good profile, and check cooling and power delivery. For Bitmain’s documented S9 LPM guidance, instability or hashrate drops are reasons to disable Low Power Mode or flash back to the original firmware.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I test a new ASIC power target?

Test only after ramping and autotuning have settled, then compare a consistent observation period with the same wall meter, pool and ambient conditions. Extend the test through the warmest expected conditions before making the profile permanent.

Do lower-power settings extend ASIC hardware life?

Lower electrical and thermal stress may be desirable, but the supplied specifications do not establish a guaranteed service-life increase. Keep operation within manufacturer ratings and prioritize stable temperatures and uptime.

Can I use the same undervolt profile on two identical miners?

No. Chip variation, board condition, PSU behavior and temperature can produce different stable points. Tune and validate each unit separately.
