If a wet floor cleaner is leaving water behind, start with the dirty-water tank: empty it, clear its strainer, verify that the float moves, and reseat the tank until it clicks. Then clean the washable filter and accessible brush or foot channel, let washed parts dry completely, and run the model’s specified suction or clean-out test. A full tank, engaged float, wet filter, loose seal, hair-packed channel, or incorrectly fitted brush window can all stop water pickup.
These steps apply to the maintenance points identified by BISSELL CrossWave and Tineco Floor One support documentation, not to every wet vacuum or vacuum-mop. Find the model number first and use its owner’s manual before removing a cover or reaching into a passage. Never open the motor housing or attempt electrical repair based on this guide.

Before you unclog anything: identify the exact cleaner and make it safe
Wet floor cleaners differ in tank design, float sensors, filters, brush windows, error indicators, and which passages an owner may access. BISSELL’s US and UK instructions for different CrossWave families are not interchangeable, and Tineco’s Floor One S5 and Stretch S6 instructions do not establish that BISSELL cleaning steps transfer to Tineco machines.

- Locate the model number on the rating label, tank area, handle, or owner’s manual. Record the full name, including a suffix such as Edge, OmniForce, Pet Pro, Cordless, S5, or Stretch S6.
- Download or open the manual and support page for that exact model and region. The cited documentation includes BISSELL US pages, BISSELL UK pages, and Tineco US and UK FAQs; labels and permitted access points can vary by region.
- Turn the cleaner off. Unplug a corded machine before removing the tank, brush roll, brush window, filter, or any cover. For a cordless unit, remove it from its charger and follow the manual’s shutdown instructions.
- Keep water away from the power connection and do not run the machine with a part removed unless the manual explicitly specifies a test that way.
If the machine will not power on, follow the model’s power troubleshooting path first. A power fault is not proven to be a clog.

What usually stops water pickup
Water recovery depends on an open path from the brush area to the dirty-water tank and on an airtight, correctly assembled tank and filter. The most common user-serviceable causes are:
- Dirty-water tank full: A full tank can engage a float or full-tank sensor. Some CrossWave models change sound or reduce suction before stopping; CrossWave OmniForce can stop suction and power when its wet-debris tank is full. Tineco says Floor One stops when its dirty-water tank is full.
- Debris at the strainer or filter: Hair, lint, and floor debris can cover the tank strainer, filter, screen, or air channel.
- Blocked foot or hose channel: Hair and sludge can collect behind the brush roll, in the foot channel, or in the accessible hose area under or behind the tank.
- Incorrect assembly: A folded filter edge, loose lid, missing gasket, damaged seal, unseated tank, or unsecured brush window can admit air and prevent recovery.
- Wet filter: A washable filter that has not dried fully can restrict airflow. BISSELL’s cited CrossWave guidance requires 24 hours of drying; Tineco instructs users to dry a washed Floor One filter thoroughly.
- Brush obstruction: A jammed roller or window can prevent the cleaner from moving water into the suction opening. Tineco specifically lists roller obstruction for Stretch S6.
Step 1: confirm that suction is actually enabled
Some machines do not activate water pickup until the correct floor mode is selected and the handle is reclined. On BISSELL CrossWave and Pet Pro guidance, select the mode intended for hard floors or rugs as directed by the model. Cordless CrossWave instructions likewise require pressing the appropriate floor-mode button and reclining the handle.
Check the following without disassembling the cleaner:

- The battery has charge or the power cord is connected to a working outlet.
- The cleaner is in the intended wet-cleaning or floor mode, not a self-clean, charging, or accessory mode.
- The handle is reclined far enough to engage operation.
- No tank-full, brush, or clog indicator is requesting a stop.
If these controls do not start the brush and suction, stop troubleshooting the water path and use the manual’s no-power procedure.
Step 2: empty and inspect the dirty-water tank
- Remove the dirty-water tank exactly as the manual shows. Keep the cleaner upright so residual liquid does not run into electronics.
- Pour out the tank. Remove hair, sludge, and solid debris from the tank and its strainer.
- Inspect the float. It should move freely rather than remain stuck in the raised, tank-full position. Do not force it or pry it with a sharp object.
- Check the lid, filter frame, gasket, and tank edges for cracks, distortion, a folded filter edge, or a missing seal. A gap can leak air even when the tank appears empty.
- Refit the filter and lid in the orientation shown for your model. Push the tank into place until it clicks or otherwise reaches the stated stop; look for an even fit with no visible gap.
A tank that immediately reports full after cleaning, has a damaged lid or seal, or will not latch needs model-specific support rather than repeated cycling.
Step 3: clean the filter, screen, and strainer, then dry them fully
Remove only the washable filter and screen identified in your manual. Shake or brush off loose debris, then rinse with the permitted water temperature and method. Do not wash a part the manual labels non-washable, and do not substitute a paper or household filter.

- Keep the filter in the orientation or open configuration specified by the manual while it dries. Reinstalling a damp filter can impair suction and make a clean machine appear clogged.
Inspect the dry filter for tears, crushed media, a warped frame, or a seal that no longer sits flat. For the named CrossWave Edge series, BISSELL recommends replacing the filter every three months or as needed. That is a model-specific manufacturer interval, not a universal rule for every wet floor cleaner.
Step 4: clear the accessible suction path and brush area
With the machine powered down, remove only the brush window, brush roll, tank, and other parts that the exact instructions identify as user-removable. Look for hair, string, dried detergent, grit, and wet clumps in these locations:
- The foot channel around and behind the brush roll.
- The suction opening under the brush window.
- The accessible hose or channel behind the brush-roll area.
- The pocket below or inside the dirty-tank mount.
- The tank strainer, screen, and sensor area.
For the listed CrossWave and Pet Pro procedures, BISSELL names a toothbrush or another soft-bristled brush for the accessible channel. Use that tool only where the manual permits. A soft brush can loosen hair without cutting a gasket or scratching a sensor.
Do not push a screwdriver, wire, coat hanger, or other sharp object into a sealed passage. Do not pour chemicals, drain cleaner, or large amounts of water into the foot or hose. If debris is beyond the designated access point, stop and ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider how that model is opened.

Step 5: inspect the roller, window, seals, and sensors
Clean the brush roll and its end caps, then check that it turns as the manual describes. Remove wrapped hair rather than pulling hard against the bearing or seal. Wipe the brush window and confirm that its latch closes completely.

Examine removable parts for damage that cleaning cannot fix:
- A cracked dirty-water tank or lid.
- A flattened, torn, or missing gasket.
- A filter frame that no longer seals.
- A warped brush window.
- A float that remains stuck or a sensor area covered with residue.
On CrossWave OmniForce, an E1 message with a clog icon indicates that the system has detected a clog condition. Use the OmniForce clean-out sequence and inspection points, not a procedure copied from another CrossWave model.
Step 6: reassemble and run the manufacturer’s test
- Confirm that every washed component is fully dry.
- Seat the filter without folding its edges and close the tank lid.
- Install the dirty-water tank until it clicks or reaches the stated lock position.
- Secure the brush roll and brush window; verify that no latch is partly open.
- Run the exact suction test or clean-out cycle in the manual. Keep the machine on the specified surface and in the specified mode.
- Watch whether recovered water returns to the dirty tank and whether the sound, indicator, and airflow return to normal.
Some BISSELL procedures use a test in which water should flow back into the dirty tank. If that test fails to return water after the tank, filter, and accessible path have been cleaned, BISSELL directs the owner to seek further help rather than continue opening the appliance.

What to do when the cleaner still has no suction
The tank is empty but the machine reports full
Turn the cleaner off, remove the tank, and check for a stuck float, residue around the sensor, an incorrectly fitted filter, or a lid that is not fully closed. Reassemble once dry. If the full indication returns immediately, the float or sensor may require service.
The motor runs but no water reaches the tank
Repeat the designated suction or clean-out test only after confirming the tank seal, filter dryness, brush window, and accessible channel. A failed return-of-water test is the stopping point in the cited BISSELL procedures. Contact manufacturer support or an authorized repair provider instead of probing deeper passages.

Suction is weak and the sound changed
Recheck the tank level, strainer, filter dryness, and hair around the brush roll. CrossWave Edge guidance specifically associates reduced suction and a sound change with tank or float conditions. Do not assume a louder motor means the blockage is clearing.
The brush will not turn
Remove wrapped hair from the permitted roller area and confirm that the brush window is locked. If a brush or clog indicator remains after cleaning, follow the model’s brush-error procedure. A seized bearing or damaged end cap is a repair issue, not a reason to force the roller.
The cleaner lost suction after washing the filter
Remove the filter and allow it to dry for the full manufacturer requirement. For the cited BISSELL CrossWave guidance that means 24 hours; Tineco’s instruction is to dry the filter thoroughly. Do not accelerate drying with an oven, heater, or high heat that could deform the frame or seal.

Replace a filter only when the exact model’s instructions or inspection support replacement. A damaged, missing, warped, or permanently clogged filter is a reasonable replacement case; a clean, intact filter is not proof that buying another one will restore suction.
- Match the model number and genuine part number shown in the manual or official parts listing.
- Compare the replacement’s frame, gasket, screen, and fit with the original before installation.
- Follow the model’s stated replacement interval where one exists. The three-month-or-as-needed recommendation cited above applies to the named CrossWave Edge series only.
- If the part is unavailable or the model is unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than buying a generic filter advertised for a different family.
A small toothbrush or soft-bristled brush is appropriate only for the accessible channel that the model instructions identify. It is not a substitute for opening a sealed hose or motor assembly.
Stop and get service when these conditions appear
- No suction remains after the model’s tank, filter, brush, and accessible-channel procedure.
- The manufacturer’s suction or clean-out test fails to return water to the dirty tank.
- The tank, lid, gasket, brush window, filter frame, power cord, or housing is cracked, melted, or visibly damaged.
- The float stays stuck, a full-tank or clog code returns immediately, or a sensor appears damaged.
- Water has entered the motor or electrical area, or the cleaner smells hot, sparks, or trips a breaker.
- The next step would require opening the motor housing or a sealed internal passage.
Provide support with the exact model number, the indicator or error code, whether the motor runs, whether the tank is full, which user-removable parts were cleaned, and the result of the manufacturer’s test. That information lets the manufacturer or authorized repair provider distinguish a maintenance blockage from a failed seal, sensor, pump, fan, or motor without unsafe experimentation.

Not unless the exact manual authorizes that method. Sharp tools and high-pressure air can damage gaskets, sensors, filters, or drive debris deeper into a sealed passage. The cited BISSELL procedure uses a toothbrush or soft-bristled brush at a designated accessible channel.
