For a bathroom sink or shower clogged with hair, start by removing reachable debris with a drain hair-removal tool that fits the opening. Use chemical drain cleaner only if its label names your fixture and you can follow every safety direction. Never mix cleaners or plunge while chemical product may remain in the drain.
Start by checking the drain and the clog
Identify whether the problem is in a bathroom sink or shower, and note whether water is standing. A tool that fits one drain may not fit another, and product labels specify which fixtures a cleaner is intended for. If hair is visible or reachable near the opening, manual removal is a practical first option.

Remove reachable hair with a manual tool
- Choose a tool that fits. A flexible, barbed drain hair-removal tool can loosen and retrieve hair. Drano describes a 23-inch flexible tool for bathroom sink and shower drains, but that does not establish that it fits every drain opening. Check the opening and the tool instructions before use. See the manufacturer’s tool information.
- Insert it carefully. Follow the tool’s directions; guide it into the drain without forcing it past resistance. Keep your face clear of the opening.
- Retrieve debris cautiously. Pull the tool out according to its instructions and dispose of the collected hair. Keep hands and face clear of debris and splashes. Repeat only as the tool directions allow.
If the tool will not fit, cannot reach the clog, or the blockage remains, do not force it or assume that a particular stopper or trap should be taken apart. A plumber can assess a clog that is not safely reachable.
Use chemical drain cleaner only according to its label
A bathroom drain gel is an optional approach, not a universal fix. Confirm that the product label names your fixture and follow that product’s current directions exactly; instructions differ among cleaners. Drano Bathroom Gel, for example, is labeled for bathroom sinks, showers, and bathtubs. Its manufacturer says to pour the whole bottle slowly, wait 15 minutes—or 30 minutes for a tough clog—and flush with hot, not boiling, water. Those directions apply to that product only. Check Drano Bathroom Gel’s instructions.

- Do not use a plunger during or after applying that gel: the manufacturer warns product may remain in a drain that is not clear.
- Never mix drain cleaner with another cleaner or chemical. Drano warns that mixing its gel may cause hazardous fumes or a violent reaction; mixing cleaners can be dangerous generally.
- Use the protective equipment and pouring precautions on the label. Poison Control recommends goggles and rubber gloves for corrosive drain cleaners and careful pouring close to the drain to reduce splashes. Read Poison Control’s drain-cleaner safety guidance.
Some non-enzymatic cleaners contain corrosive acids or alkalis, including sulfuric or hydrochloric acid and sodium or potassium hydroxide. Poison Control warns that swallowing drain cleaner can cause severe chemical burns and damage to the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. Why baking soda and vinegar may not clear a tough hair clog
Do not rely on baking soda and vinegar to dissolve a serious hair blockage. Poison Control explains that drains are not airtight, so the gas produced generally escapes; the combination is unlikely to melt away a tough clog. Poison Control explains the limits and risks of drain-cleaning remedies.

When to call a plumber
Get plumbing help if the clog remains after reasonable steps taken according to a tool’s or product’s directions, if the blockage is beyond safe reach, or if you cannot use a product without risking exposure. Do not plunge after chemical cleaner may have been used or take apart unfamiliar drain hardware based on guesswork.
