For an IP ban, use pardon-ip IP-address instead. In-game unbanning requires operator permission level 3 or higher; a hosting-panel console has full permission.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses a different administration model. Microsoft’s documented /allowlist commands control who may join, while owner-level permissions and cheats are required for allowlist administration. A Microsoft account enforcement action is separate from your server’s ban list and cannot be reversed by a private-server owner.

“Banned” can mean several different things. The correct recovery step depends on the edition, the ban scope and who applied the restriction.
- Java account ban: the player’s account or username is on the server’s player-ban list. Use
pardon. - Java IP ban: an address is blocked, potentially affecting every player using that connection. Use
pardon-ip. - Bedrock access restriction: the server’s allowlist and permission state determine whether the player may join. Use the documented
/allowlistcommands and check owner permissions. - Plugin or mod ban: a moderation plugin may maintain its own database and commands. The vanilla Java commands may not remove that separate restriction.
- Microsoft account enforcement: the account is restricted at the platform level. A server administrator cannot lift it.
If you control the server, start by confirming whether it is Java Edition or Bedrock Dedicated Server. The command names and authority requirements are not interchangeable. Ask the player for the exact error message and the edition they are using before changing a list.

Unban a player on Java Edition
1. Confirm that you have administrative access
You must control the server or have permission to administer it. In-game commands require operator permission level 3 or higher. A hosting-panel console has full permission, so it can be used even when you are not currently connected to the game.
In chat, Minecraft commands begin with a slash. In a server or hosting-panel console, enter the command without the slash. For example, type /pardon Alex in chat but pardon Alex in the console. A leading slash in a panel console may be rejected, so follow the console’s normal command format.
2. Check whether it is a player ban or an IP ban
Use the ban-list commands before changing anything:
banlistshows the available ban information.banlist playerschecks account or player bans.banlist ipschecks IP bans.
The distinction matters. pardon expects a player name, while pardon-ip expects an address. Entering a name in the IP command will not remove an address ban. Likewise, pardoning an address does not remove a separate player-name entry.
3. Remove a player-name ban
- Open the server console, or join the server with operator level 3 or higher.
- Run
banlist playersand confirm the exact player name shown on the list. - In the console, enter
pardon PlayerName. In chat, enter/pardon PlayerName. - Have the player reconnect to the server.
Use the name exactly as it appears in the ban list. Do not add quotation marks or an explanatory sentence. If the name is misspelled, the command can leave the actual entry untouched. Keep the console response so you can tell whether the server accepted the command.
If the server is running an authentication or moderation plugin, that plugin may use a separate identifier or database; in that case, follow the plugin’s own unban procedure as well. A successful vanilla command only removes the matching vanilla entry.
4. Remove an IP ban
- Run
banlist ipsto identify the blocked address. - In the console, enter
pardon-ip 203.0.113.25, replacing the example with the listed address. In chat, use/pardon-ip 203.0.113.25. - Ask the affected player to reconnect.
The command accepts an IP address, not a player name. Confirm every digit and punctuation mark before submitting it. If several addresses appear, remove only the address that matches the player’s current connection and the restriction you intend to lift.

An IP ban can block other people who share the same home, school or workplace connection. It can also become ineffective when a provider changes a household or mobile address, and a player using a VPN may appear from a different address. For those reasons, a normal account ban is generally more targeted for an individual player.
Using a hosting-panel console
If you administer a rented or managed server, the panel normally provides a Console or Terminal view. Stop using the in-game chat requirement by opening that console and entering the same Java command without a leading slash:
pardon PlayerNamefor a player-name banpardon-ip IP-addressfor an IP ban
The panel console has full permission according to the hosting guidance, so you do not need to be online as an operator. This is useful when the banned player cannot join to report the problem, or when you need to correct an IP ban that affects your own connection. Keep the player’s exact name or address visible while entering the command, then ask the player to try again.

Do not confuse a panel’s file manager with its live console. The live console sends a command to the running server. File editing changes stored data and has additional risks described below.
When pardon does not restore access
A successful Java unban command removes one entry from the vanilla ban list. It does not automatically change every other access control. Work through these checks in order rather than repeatedly issuing the same command.
Check for a separate IP ban
If you removed a player ban but the person still cannot connect, run banlist ips. An address ban can continue blocking the connection even after the account entry is pardoned. Remove it with pardon-ip <IP> if that restriction was intentional and you have confirmed the address.
Check the allowlist
An allowlist is independent of a pardon. A player who is not permitted by the server’s allowlist can still be refused after a ban is removed. Review the server’s allowlist settings and add the player through the method used by that server. Conversely, if the player is listed but should not have access, the allowlist decision itself must be changed; a pardon does not decide allowlist membership.

Check plugins and moderation systems
Many servers use plugins or mods that keep their own punishment records. The available evidence does not establish one universal plugin command. Look up the documentation for the specific moderation system and remove the player there if necessary. Also check whether a proxy, network-wide moderation tool or another server in the same network is applying the block. A network can show a generic ban message even when the vanilla list is empty.
Check the player’s connection and identity
Ask the player to confirm the exact account name, server address and edition. A player may be connecting from a different IP than the one you pardoned, or may be trying to join a Bedrock server with Java instructions. If the server uses online authentication, verify that the player is signing in with the account that was banned. A name change or a different signed-in account can make a valid pardon appear ineffective.
Check permissions and server state
On Bedrock, an allowlist change may require owner authority, cheats and a reload. On Java, confirm that the command was sent to the intended server instance, especially when a host runs multiple servers or a proxy. Review the console output for a syntax or permission error instead of assuming that a submitted command succeeded.
Check for platform enforcement
If the player cannot join multiple unrelated servers, Realms or other multiplayer sessions, the restriction may be attached to the Microsoft account rather than your server. A private-server administrator cannot reverse that action; the account holder must use Minecraft’s platform appeal or support process.
Unban or restore access on Bedrock Dedicated Server
Bedrock Dedicated Server administration is not a direct Java-style pardon workflow. Microsoft documents /allowlist as an owner-level command that requires cheats. The command manages the server allowlist, so restoring access means making the allowlist and permission state match the access policy you intend to use.
Allowlist command forms
/allowlist add <name: id>adds a player identifier./allowlist remove <name: id>removes a player identifier./allowlist listdisplays the current entries./allowlist reloadreloads the allowlist.
Use the command in the Bedrock server environment with the owner-level authority required by the server. If the player should be allowed to join, add the correct name or ID, then reload the list if the server requires it. If the player should remain excluded, remove the entry instead. Do not assume that deleting a Java ban entry will change Bedrock access.
Because the syntax accepts a name or ID, copy the identifier used by that Bedrock server rather than substituting a Java username automatically. Use /allowlist list to inspect the current state before making a change. If the player is already listed but cannot join, the problem may be permissions, another moderation system or an account-level enforcement action.

Use Bedrock’s command help and permission controls
Bedrock’s broader command reference lists /kick as available without cheats, /permission as a dedicated-server owner command, and /help for checking command syntax. Use /help on the server when you are unsure which form your installed build accepts. Review the permission state if the player is on the allowlist but still cannot join.
The Bedrock server software described in the administrator guidance provides kick but not a Java-style native ban command. Therefore, a Bedrock access problem may be caused by the allowlist, permissions, a third-party moderation system or a platform-level account action rather than a vanilla player-ban entry. Treat the error message and the server’s own command help as the starting point.
Bedrock recovery checklist
- Confirm that the server is Bedrock Dedicated Server and that you have owner-level access.
- Use
/allowlist listto see whether the player identifier is present. - If the player should join, use
/allowlist add <name: id>with the correct identifier. - Run
/allowlist reloadwhen the server requires a reload to apply the file or command change. - Check
/permissionsettings and any moderation plugin or proxy. - Ask the player to reconnect and report the exact message if access is still denied.
Java and Bedrock: what changes
| Area | Java Edition server | Bedrock Dedicated Server |
|---|---|---|
| Primary restoration method | pardon for a player ban or pardon-ip for an IP ban |
Manage allowlist membership with /allowlist and verify permissions |
| Authority | In-game operator permission level 3 or higher; hosting console has full permission | Microsoft documents allowlist administration as owner-level and requiring cheats |
| Ban scope covered here | Account/player entry or IP address | Allowlist and permission state; no Java-style native pardon command is documented in the administrator guidance |
| Execution location | Chat uses a leading slash; a console command does not | Use the command form supported by the Bedrock server and check /help |
| Typical remaining checks | Other ban type, allowlist, plugin, proxy or account enforcement | Permissions, moderation system, allowlist reload or account enforcement |
Editing Java ban files manually
Java servers store account bans in banned-players.json and IP bans in banned-ips.json. Commands are safer because the server updates its own data format and validates the change.
If manual editing is unavoidable, stop the server first. A running server can rewrite the file and overwrite your change. Preserve a backup, remove only the intended entry, and keep the file valid JSON. Malformed JSON can break the ban list or prevent the server from reading it correctly. Start the server again only after the file has been saved and checked.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not edit the player-ban file when the problem is an IP ban, and do not edit the IP file when the player is blocked by a plugin or Microsoft account enforcement. Each mechanism has a different owner and data source. If you are unsure which file contains the entry, use banlist players and banlist ips before stopping the server.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the edition: Java and Bedrock use different administration commands.
- Confirm authority: use Java operator level 3 or higher, a full-permission console, or Bedrock owner-level access with cheats for allowlist management.
- Inspect the relevant list: use
banlist playersorbanlist ipson Java; use/allowlist liston Bedrock. - Remove the matching restriction: use the player name for
pardon, the address forpardon-ip, or the correct Bedrock allowlist operation. - Reconnect: have the player try again after the change.
- Read the resulting error: distinguish a ban message from an allowlist, permission, connection or authentication message.
- Escalate only the remaining layer: check the other ban type, allowlist, plugin or mod, proxy, permissions and platform enforcement.
This order avoids changing unrelated settings and helps you distinguish a server-side ban from an account-wide restriction. It also creates a useful record for another administrator: edition, list inspected, command used and remaining error.
Preventing accidental lockouts
- Prefer an account ban when the goal is to restrict one player; an IP ban can affect everyone sharing that address.
- Record whether each punishment is a player ban, IP ban, allowlist decision or plugin action.
- Keep the server console available to trusted administrators so a correction does not depend on the banned player being online.
- Back up
banned-players.jsonandbanned-ips.jsonbefore any manual maintenance. - Use the server’s own command help and documentation for plugin or Bedrock-specific syntax rather than assuming Java commands apply everywhere.
- When lifting a restriction, verify the exact player name or address before submitting the command.
- After a change, ask the player to reconnect and report the full error rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
When the server owner cannot unban the player
Minecraft account enforcement is broader than a private-server punishment. Minecraft Help states that platform-banned players cannot play on servers, join Realms, or host or join multiplayer games. A server owner can remove a private-server ban, but cannot reverse a Microsoft account action. The affected account holder must follow the platform’s appeal route.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
This distinction explains why a player may remain unable to join after pardon, pardon-ip or an allowlist change. Those commands affect your server only. They cannot alter an enforcement decision attached to the player’s Microsoft account.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Minecraft Java unban command?
Use pardon PlayerName in the server console or /pardon PlayerName in chat. You need operator permission level 3 or higher in game; a hosting-panel console has full permission.
How do I unban an IP address?
Run banlist ips first, then use pardon-ip IP-address in the console or /pardon-ip IP-address in chat. The command requires the address, not the player’s name.
Why does pardon not let the player join?
Check for a separate IP ban, allowlist exclusion, plugin or proxy punishment, incorrect account or edition, and Microsoft account enforcement. A vanilla pardon removes only the matching Java player-ban entry.
Can I unban someone from a Bedrock Dedicated Server with pardon?
Bedrock Dedicated Server does not use the Java-style pardon workflow. Use the owner-level /allowlist commands, verify permissions and reload the allowlist when required.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What Bedrock command adds a player back?
Use /allowlist add <name: id> with the correct Bedrock name or identifier. Check the result with /allowlist list and use /allowlist reload if needed.
Can a server owner reverse a Microsoft account ban?
No. Platform enforcement can prevent the account from playing on servers, joining Realms, or hosting or joining multiplayer games. The account holder must use Minecraft’s platform appeal or support process.
Should I edit banned-players.json manually?
Commands are safer. If manual editing is unavoidable, stop the Java server first, make a backup, preserve valid JSON and remove only the intended entry. Use banned-ips.json for IP bans.
Do I type the slash in the server console?
No. In chat use /pardon PlayerName; in a Java server or hosting-panel console use pardon PlayerName without the leading slash.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe Bottom Line
For Java, inspect the correct list and use pardon for a player ban or pardon-ip for an IP ban. For Bedrock, restore intended access through owner-level /allowlist and permission controls. If the restriction is maintained by a plugin, proxy or Microsoft account, the vanilla command cannot remove it.
