How to Type in an Indigenous Language on iPhone

To add an Indigenous-language keyboard on iPhone, open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard, then choose your language if it appears. In a text field, touch and hold the Emoji or keyboard-switch key and select that keyboard.

There is no single “Indigenous language” keyboard. Support depends on the exact language, spelling conventions, writing system, iOS release, device and app. Apple’s built-in list may provide basic key entry for your language, while autocorrection, predictive text, QuickPath and dictation may have different support. If your language is absent or the built-in layout lacks needed characters, use documentation or a keyboard maintained for that language community.

Check your exact language before changing settings

“Indigenous language” describes thousands of distinct languages and orthographies. iPhone treats them individually: a keyboard for one language does not automatically cover a related language, a regional spelling convention or a different writing system. Before you begin, write down the language name as your community or language department spells it. Also note whether you need a Latin alphabet, syllabics, Cherokee characters or particular diacritics.

  • Language name: Use the community’s preferred name and spelling when searching Apple’s list or an app store.
  • Writing system: Determine whether you need ordinary Latin letters, an extended Latin layout, syllabics or a distinct script.
  • iOS and device: Keyboard and text-assistance support can vary by iOS release and device model. The steps below use Apple’s current iPhone labels; feature availability can change after an update.
  • Required functions: Decide whether you only need to enter characters, or also need autocorrection, predictive text, swipe typing, multilingual typing or dictation.

Apple’s iOS 27 feature-availability list includes Indigenous-language inputs such as Cherokee, Blackfoot, Comanche, Navajo, Northern East Cree, Plains Cree and Osage, among many other languages. That list is language-specific; it is not a promise that every Indigenous language has a built-in keyboard.

Add an Apple keyboard for your language

Apple’s current setup route is the same whether you are adding a second language or a keyboard for a different script.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Keyboard.
  4. Tap Keyboards. This shows keyboards already installed on the phone.
  5. Tap Add New Keyboard.
  6. Search or scroll through the language list, then tap the exact language you want.

Apple says that adding a keyboard for another language also adds that language to Preferred Languages. That language preference can affect how iPhone and some apps present language-aware features, so check the result if you did not intend to change your preferred-language order.

Apple’s iPhone guide describes the purpose this way: “You can add keyboards for writing or using Dictation in different languages on your iPhone.” The presence of a language in the keyboard picker means you can select an input method; it does not by itself confirm that every language-assistance feature is available.

Switch to the Indigenous-language keyboard while typing

After adding the keyboard, open any app with a text field—for example, a message, note or email—and switch from the current layout.

  1. Tap the text field so the on-screen keyboard appears.
  2. Touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key. Apple’s guide uses both labels because the icon can differ according to the keyboards installed.
  3. Keep holding until the keyboard list appears, then slide to or tap your Indigenous-language keyboard.
  4. Type a short test phrase that includes the letters, diacritics or script characters your community uses.

If you have several keyboards, holding the switch key is generally faster than tapping repeatedly through every layout. Return to another keyboard by repeating the same gesture and choosing it from the list.

Test in the app where you actually plan to write. A keyboard can appear correctly in one text field while an app’s own editor, font handling or text-processing behavior produces a different result. Save a short sample and inspect every character before sending an important message or publishing a translation.

What Apple’s language list does—and does not—tell you

Apple’s iOS 27 language-availability page is the best starting point for checking whether a language has an Apple-provided input method. Search it using the exact language name rather than a broad label such as “Cree” or “Native American.” Similar names can refer to different languages or orthographies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Language input named by Apple What the example demonstrates What you still need to verify
Cherokee An Indigenous language can have a dedicated Apple-listed input. Whether the available layout matches the Cherokee characters and conventions you use, and which text aids are supported.
Blackfoot Support is identified by a specific language name rather than a universal Indigenous option. Your preferred spelling conventions and the iOS/device feature details for that input.
Comanche Apple’s list can include individual languages that use Latin-based writing. Whether all required letters and diacritics are available in the layout.
Navajo A language may be listed separately even when it shares some characters with English. Autocorrection, predictive typing, QuickPath and dictation support.
Northern East Cree Regional or language-specific entries matter; a related language’s keyboard is not an automatic substitute. Whether the listed input uses the script and spelling system required by your community.
Plains Cree Apple can distinguish among Cree language varieties. Whether you need syllabics, Latin letters or both, and whether an alternate layout is needed.
Osage Distinct scripts can receive their own language entry. Character coverage in the apps where you will type and any available predictive features.

The examples above come from Apple’s iOS 27 feature list checked on October 13, 2026. They illustrate the way Apple organizes support, not a complete catalog of Indigenous languages. If your language is missing, that does not mean an iPhone cannot display its characters; it means Apple’s built-in keyboard list does not establish a ready-made input for it.

Separate keyboard entry from typing assistance

These functions are often confused, but they are separate capabilities. A language may have a keyboard for entering characters without having Apple’s dictionaries or models for the other features.

Function What it does How to evaluate it for your language
Basic keyboard input Places letters, syllabics or other characters into a text field when you tap keys. Confirm that every character, diacritic and punctuation mark in your writing system can be entered.
Autocorrection Suggests or replaces text based on a language dictionary. Check whether the language is listed for autocorrection; do not assume a keyboard includes a dictionary.
Predictive text Offers the next word or phrase while you type. Test with real community vocabulary. A language keyboard can work even when predictive suggestions are unavailable.
QuickPath or swipe typing Lets you slide across letters instead of tapping each one. Verify that the exact layout supports QuickPath. Script or diacritic requirements can make a tap-based layout more practical.
Dictation Converts speech into text. Check language-specific dictation availability separately; keyboard presence is not proof that speech recognition supports the language.
Multilingual typing Allows more than one language to be recognized or used within a typing workflow. Look for explicit Apple support for the languages and device model you use instead of inferring it from the keyboard list.

When a suggestion is wrong, turn off or ignore the suggestion rather than changing your spelling to satisfy the software. For language work, the community’s orthography and word forms take priority over an English-oriented correction model.

If Apple does not list your language

Use a language-first approach rather than searching for a generic “Indigenous keyboard.” Start with the language department, tribal or First Nation language office, cultural organization or education program that documents your language. Its instructions can identify the correct script, layout and app for your spelling standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search the organization’s current iPhone or iPad typing instructions using the exact language name.
  2. Check whether the instructions specify a particular script, keyboard app, iOS version or device requirement.
  3. Install only the keyboard or app that matches those instructions, then test it with a short set of approved words and diacritics.
  4. Confirm that the app works in the text fields you use, not only inside the app’s own editor.
  5. Keep a copy of the community’s layout instructions. App names, permissions and compatibility can change after an update.

One documented option is the FirstVoices Keyboards app from the First Peoples’ Cultural Council. Its App Store listing says it includes keyboards for over 100 languages and can activate a selected keyboard in iPhone and iPad apps. “Over 100 languages” is the publisher’s coverage claim, not an independent measure of support or effectiveness for every language. Search within the app for your exact language, then check its current iOS requirements and version before relying on it.

Language-specific examples

Cherokee

The Cherokee Nation Language Department publishes iOS keyboard instructions for Cherokee. Follow that community-specific guide when your goal is Cherokee text, because it can identify the characters and layout expected by Cherokee speakers more precisely than a generic language list. If the Apple keyboard appears in your settings, compare its output with the Cherokee Nation’s examples before choosing it for formal or educational work.

East Cree syllabics

East Cree’s mobile-typing guidance recommends Keyman for Cree syllabics with a QWERTY layout. This is a language- and script-specific recommendation, not a universal solution for all Cree varieties or for every Indigenous language. If you write East Cree syllabics, confirm that the recommended layout produces the syllabic characters and final forms your community uses; a Latin Cree layout will not substitute for syllabics merely because both are associated with Cree.

These examples show why the exact language, script and community documentation should guide your choice. Do not install a keyboard for a related language simply because its name looks similar.

Do not confuse Apple’s three-language keyboard feature with universal Indigenous-language support

Apple documents a three-language keyboard feature for iOS 18 that combines English with up to two additional listed Indian languages on specified device models. That feature is limited to the languages and hardware Apple identifies. It is not a general setting for adding any Indigenous language, and it does not replace checking the iOS 27 language-availability list or community instructions.

If you need English plus an Indigenous language, add each supported keyboard normally and switch between them. Use the three-language feature only when Apple explicitly lists your languages and device as eligible.

Troubleshoot common problems

The language does not appear under Add New Keyboard

  • Search Apple’s feature-availability list using the exact language name and spelling used by the language community.
  • Check whether you are looking for a related language or a different script. Northern East Cree and Plains Cree, for example, are separate entries in Apple’s list.
  • Ask the language’s community organization whether it documents a third-party keyboard or app.
  • Do not treat an English or regional keyboard as a substitute unless it can produce every character required by your orthography.

The keyboard is installed but the needed characters are missing

  • Compare the layout with an authoritative community spelling guide.
  • Check whether the characters are accessed by touching and holding a key, using a second layout or selecting an alternate script.
  • If the built-in layout cannot produce the required characters, use the language-specific app or keyboard recommended by the community.
  • Test copied text for correct Unicode characters; visually similar letters can be different characters.

Switching keyboards is slow or confusing

  • Touch and hold the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key instead of tapping repeatedly through the list.
  • Remove keyboards you no longer use from Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards so the switcher is easier to scan.
  • Keep the language keyboard near the top of your working set, but remember that adding it also affects Preferred Languages.

Autocorrection changes correct words

  • Verify whether Apple lists autocorrection for the exact language; basic keyboard availability does not establish dictionary support.
  • Review every suggested replacement before sending important text.
  • For formal language work, use a community-approved word list or editor when available rather than relying on an English-language correction model.

Dictation or predictive text does not work

Check those features separately from the keyboard. Apple treats keyboard input, Dictation, predictive typing, autocorrection, QuickPath and multilingual typing as distinct capabilities. If your language has key entry but no speech or prediction support, continue typing with the verified layout or use a community tool that explicitly documents the missing function.

Text looks different in another app

Type a sample containing every special character in the target app. If the app’s editor or font does not handle the script correctly, report the issue to the app developer or use an editor documented by the language community. Do not “correct” the text by replacing community characters with look-alike letters.

Choose the right setup for your situation

Your situation Best first step Decision point
Your exact language appears in Apple’s keyboard list and you need ordinary key entry. Add it through Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard. Test all required characters in the apps where you write.
Your language appears, but you need autocorrection, prediction, QuickPath or dictation. Add the keyboard, then evaluate each feature independently. Keep the keyboard only if its assistance matches your language and spelling conventions.
Your language is absent from Apple’s list. Find current instructions from the language’s own community or language department. Use a documented third-party keyboard or app that names your exact language and script.
Your language uses syllabics or another specialized script. Verify script-specific community guidance before choosing a general Latin layout. Confirm that the keyboard produces the correct characters, forms and punctuation.
You need several languages every day. Add each supported keyboard and switch with the held Emoji or keyboard-switch key. Check the effect on Preferred Languages and keep only the layouts you use.

Keep the setup accurate as iOS changes

Keyboard support is software-dependent. Apple can add, rename or revise language features in a later iOS release, and third-party apps can change their language coverage or minimum iOS requirement. Recheck Apple’s current availability page and the language community’s documentation after a major update.

When asking for help, include the exact language and variety, the script or orthography, your iPhone model, iOS version, the app where you are typing and the feature that fails. “Indigenous keyboard” is too broad to diagnose; those details determine whether the answer is an Apple layout, a script-specific app or a community-maintained keyboard.

The dependable path is therefore: identify the exact language, add Apple’s keyboard when it is listed, test the characters and features you actually need, and use community documentation when Apple’s list or tools do not cover your language.
