Click where the emoji should go, then open macOS Character Viewer with Fn–E or Globe–E. You can also choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols, or press Control–Command–Space bar. Search for a description such as laughing face, then click the result to insert it. In the expanded viewer, double-click the character instead. These controls are built into macOS, so you do not need to install an emoji utility. Apple’s Mac user guide documents the Character Viewer workflow, and Apple’s keyboard-shortcut reference lists the additional shortcut.
What Character Viewer does
Character Viewer is macOS’s built-in panel for entering more than emoji. Apple describes it as a way to browse and insert emoji, symbols, accented letters, and characters from other languages. It can be used wherever you can place a text insertion point, including a document, message, search field, or another editable text area. Because it is part of macOS, the procedure does not require a download, extension, or separate account.

The viewer has two presentations. A collapsed view is a compact picker suited to quickly choosing a recently used character. An expanded view provides browsing and customization controls, including categories, character-size controls, favorites, and an option to clear frequently used characters. The same Character Viewer is opened by the keyboard shortcuts and by the menu command; the difference is how quickly you can reach it and whether your current keyboard/input-source settings affect a shortcut.

- Place the insertion point. Click in the text area at the exact position where the emoji belongs. If you are replacing selected text, leave that text selected; choosing a character will insert at the active selection or insertion point.
- Open Character Viewer. Press Fn–E on a keyboard whose Fn key is used for this shortcut, or press Globe–E on a keyboard with a Globe key. You can instead select Edit > Emoji & Symbols from the app’s menu bar. Apple’s shortcut reference also lists Control–Command–Space bar as a way to show Character Viewer. Apple’s user guide and its shortcut reference describe these options.
- Search by description. Enter a word or phrase in the viewer’s search field. Apple uses laughing face as an example. Describing the visual or its meaning is usually faster than browsing every category.
- Choose the result. Click the emoji you want. In the expanded viewer, double-click the character to insert it.
- Choose a variation when available. Click and hold an emoji to reveal alternatives such as skin-tone variations, then select the version you want.
The character is inserted at the location you selected in the host app. You can leave the viewer open while entering more characters, or close it and continue typing normally.

Choose the best way to open Character Viewer
There is no separate emoji application to compare. These are alternate entry points to the same macOS viewer. Use the table to pick the method that best fits your keyboard and workflow.

Use search instead of browsing
After Character Viewer opens, the search field is the quickest route to a known emoji. Type a plain-language description rather than trying to reproduce the category name. For example, entering laughing face can locate the corresponding emoji according to Apple’s guide. Search is also useful when you know the meaning but not the official Unicode label.
Search results are still selections in the viewer, not a separate copy-and-paste process. Click a result to insert it at the active insertion point; if you are using the expanded presentation, double-click it. If the result is not what you intended, search again with a more specific description and choose the replacement at the same text location.

Many human-form emoji expose variations. Press and hold the emoji in Character Viewer to display the available alternatives, then move to and select the desired skin tone. This hold action is different from the ordinary single click that inserts the default displayed character. If you do not see a variation menu, that particular emoji may not offer one.

Open Character Viewer from the menu bar
You can launch the viewer without remembering a keyboard shortcut by adding the Input menu to the menu bar. Apple’s path is:
- Open System Settings.
- Select Keyboard.
- Under Text Input, choose Edit.
- Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar.
- Use the new Input menu in the menu bar to open Character Viewer.
The exact controls can look slightly different across macOS releases, but the setting names above are the labels Apple gives in its Mac user guide. This route is particularly useful when a shortcut is intercepted by another input source or when you want a visible control rather than a key combination.
Configure the Fn or Globe key
Apple’s Character Viewer guide also describes configuring the Fn or Globe key to show Emoji & Symbols. If pressing Fn–E or Globe–E does not open the viewer, inspect the keyboard settings for that key and make sure it is assigned to the Emoji & Symbols action rather than another input-source function. The menu command remains available while you check the setting, so you can continue inserting characters without waiting for the shortcut to work.
On a keyboard with a Globe key, the key may be used to switch among language input sources. On another keyboard, the Fn key may be assigned to hardware or function-key behavior. Those assignments explain why the same shortcut can behave differently on two Macs or under different language configurations.

Work in collapsed or expanded view
Collapsed view for quick picks
The collapsed presentation is a compact picker. It is useful when you repeatedly use a small set of emoji and want to choose one without opening a large browser. Frequently used characters appear in this compact area, and favorites are displayed near recently used emoji.
Expanded view for browsing and control
Expand Character Viewer when you need more than a quick selection. In the expanded presentation you can customize which categories are shown, change the character size, and manage the list of frequently used characters. The larger view is also the one in which Apple specifies double-clicking a character to insert it.
Add favorites
When you find a character you use regularly, add it to favorites from Character Viewer. Favorites appear near recently used emoji in the collapsed view and in a dedicated Favorites category in the expanded view. This gives you a stable collection that is easier to reach than searching each time.

Clear frequently used characters
The expanded viewer includes a control to clear frequently used characters. Use it when the recent-character list no longer reflects your habits or you want to remove old entries from that part of the interface. Clearing the frequently used list is separate from managing favorites; a favorite remains in the Favorites category unless you remove it there.

Adjust categories and character size
Expanded view lets you customize categories and change how large characters appear. Category customization reduces browsing time by keeping the groups you actually use visible, while the size setting can make visual inspection easier when several similar symbols are shown. These changes affect the viewer’s presentation, not the text already inserted in your document.

Although the quickest use case is an emoji, Character Viewer also handles symbols, accented letters, and characters from other languages. Search for the character by description, browse the relevant category in expanded view, and insert it using the same click or double-click behavior. This makes the viewer a general character-entry tool rather than an emoji-only keyboard.
For multilingual writing, the Input menu can be more practical than a memorized shortcut because it remains visible while you switch among input sources. If a shortcut changes when multiple languages are configured, open Character Viewer from Edit > Emoji & Symbols or the Input menu instead.
Troubleshoot a shortcut that does not work
Use the menu command first
Choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols while the cursor is in an editable text area. If the viewer opens, the feature itself is working and the problem is limited to the key combination or its assignment. Continue with the menu command or adjust the keyboard settings.
Check the active input sources
Apple cautions that multiple input sources for different languages can alter shortcut behavior in some macOS versions. Review the input-source configuration in System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit. If the shortcut is being used for another input action, the Input menu provides a visible alternative and the menu command avoids the conflict.
Confirm the insertion point
Character Viewer can open even when no text field is active, but insertion requires a destination. Click inside the document, message, search field, or other editable control before selecting the emoji. If nothing appears after you choose a character, return to the app and make sure the cursor is visible in an editable area.
Try the alternate shortcut
If Fn–E or Globe–E is unavailable, try Control–Command–Space bar, which Apple lists in its keyboard-shortcut reference. If that also fails, use the menu command or enable the Input menu. This sequence distinguishes a key-assignment issue from a problem with the Character Viewer itself.
Check whether the viewer is expanded
A single click is sufficient in the compact presentation, while Apple’s instructions for the expanded viewer call for a double-click. If a click appears only to highlight a character, double-click it to insert it.
A practical decision path
- Need one emoji immediately? Click the destination, press Fn–E or Globe–E, search by description, and click the result.
- Shortcut unavailable? Use Edit > Emoji & Symbols.
- Shortcut conflicts with language switching? Open the Input menu after enabling it under System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit, or review the input-source settings.
- Need a specific skin tone? Click and hold the emoji, then choose the variation.
- Use the same characters often? Add them to favorites and use the collapsed Favorites area or expanded Favorites category.
- Browsing is difficult? Expand the viewer, customize categories, and adjust character size.
- Recent items are cluttered? Clear frequently used characters from the expanded viewer.
What to remember
- Character Viewer is included with macOS and covers emoji, symbols, accented letters, and characters from other languages.
- The primary keyboard routes are Fn–E and Globe–E; Apple also documents Control–Command–Space bar.
- Edit > Emoji & Symbols and the menu-bar Input menu are dependable alternatives when shortcuts are changed or unavailable.
- Search with a descriptive phrase such as laughing face instead of browsing every category.
- Click and hold an emoji to select a skin-tone variation.
- In expanded view, double-click to insert and use the customization controls for categories, size, favorites, and frequently used characters.
