If Windows 11 says Search indexing is off, start with Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Under Find my files, select Classic for the standard user folders or Enhanced for all user folders. If the service itself is stopped, start Windows Search in Services.msc; if results are stale, rebuild the index from Advanced indexing options.
This sequence restores coverage first, then the service, then the database. Allow the documented indexing time before deciding that a repair failed.

Turn indexing on from Searching Windows
Windows Search does not inspect every file from scratch whenever you type a query. It maintains a database of file names, properties and, where configured, file contents. Microsoft describes the feature this way: “Search Indexing in Windows improves the speed and efficiency of searches by creating an index of files and their properties on your device.”

Use these steps when Search is working but is covering too few folders, or when indexing was disabled in Settings.

- Open the indexing settings. Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Choose a search scope. In Find my files, choose Classic to index the usual user folders, or Enhanced to include all user folders and files.
- Add missing locations when necessary. Select Customize search locations, then choose Modify. Tick the folders that should be searchable and apply the change.
- Leave the computer available to index. The first pass can take up to a couple of hours under Microsoft’s 2026 support guidance. Keep the PC powered and give Windows time to process the queue.
- Test a known file. Search for a file whose name and folder you know. If the file appears but words inside it do not, the location may be indexed for properties only rather than for file contents.
Choose between Classic and Enhanced
The two choices are coverage profiles, not separate search applications. Classic limits the default scope so the index generally uses fewer resources; Enhanced searches a much broader set of user data.

Classic is the sensible starting point when you mainly search the standard profile folders. Enhanced is appropriate when work files, project folders or other personal data are spread throughout the user profile and should be found without adding locations one by one. If Enhanced creates unnecessary activity, return to Classic and include only the folders you actually search.
Properties versus file contents
Indexing can store file properties alone or properties plus file contents. Properties include searchable details such as a file name and metadata. A properties-only setup can locate a document by name but cannot find a word that appears inside that document. Content indexing is therefore important when the search you need is for text within files, not merely for their names.
The available content depends on the file type and its installed handler, so a file can be present in an indexed folder yet still return no match for an internal word. First confirm that the folder is included; then check whether the query relies on content rather than a property.

When the Windows Search service is not running
If Searching Windows shows that indexing is not running, check the service behind it. Microsoft identifies the service name as wsearch.
- Press the Windows key, type
Services.msc, and open the Services console. - Find Windows Search in the list.
- Open its properties. Set Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start).
- If the service status is stopped, choose Start. If it is already running, stop and start it only when the status remains inconsistent with the Searching Windows page.
- Close Services and return to Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows to check whether the indexing status changes.
Delayed automatic start lets Windows bring the service up during normal startup without making it one of the earliest boot tasks. If Search was paused during an upgrade, Microsoft advises waiting about five minutes for Windows Search to start before checking wsearch again.
Include a folder that Search still misses
A running service does not automatically make every directory searchable. Scope is controlled separately in Searching Windows.
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Select Customize search locations.
- Choose Modify in the indexing options window.
- Expand the folder tree and select each required location. Clear locations that contain disposable data or that you never search.
- Apply the selection and leave the device running so the new paths can be processed.
Excluding unnecessary folders is not only a privacy or organization choice. Microsoft reports that the indexer can handle up to 1 million items, but the database grows considerably beyond 400,000 indexed items. Those figures are Microsoft Learn guidance for Windows 11 in 2026, not a promise that every PC will behave identically. A smaller, relevant scope reduces the work required to build and update the index.

Rebuild a stale or incomplete index
Rebuilding creates a fresh index database. Use it when the service is running and the correct folders are selected, but results remain stale, incomplete or inconsistent.
- Open Advanced indexing options from the Searching Windows settings page or by opening the Windows indexing options control.
- Select Advanced.
- On the Index Settings tab, choose Rebuild.
- Confirm the action when Windows warns that rebuilding can take time.
- Keep the computer powered and allow the process to finish. Microsoft Learn’s 2026 guidance says a rebuild can take up to 24 hours.
During a rebuild, the index is incomplete by design. Search may return fewer results until the queue has been processed. Do not repeatedly press Rebuild because each new request replaces work that has not finished. If the PC is a laptop, connect it to power; indexing can pause on battery power.
Why indexing appears to stop or move slowly
The computer is busy
Windows can slow indexing while you are actively using the device and may wait for the computer to become idle. That behavior can make the count appear unchanged even though the service is healthy. Leave the PC idle for a while after changing the scope or starting a rebuild.

Indexing may pause on battery power. Connect the charger before judging the result, particularly after selecting Enhanced or starting a rebuild.

An upgrade interrupted Search
If Search was paused as part of an upgrade, wait about five minutes, then check the wsearch service in Services. Starting it manually is appropriate when it remains stopped after that interval.
The index is very large
Large collections take longer to process and consume more storage for the database. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes the capacity of up to 1 million items from the point at which the database grows considerably beyond 400,000 indexed items. If you do not need every folder, remove low-value locations with Modify rather than indexing the entire PC.

When scope and the service look correct but searches still fail, follow Microsoft’s escalation order instead of changing several settings at once.
- Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter. Launch it from Windows’ troubleshooting controls and apply any correction it reports.
- Restart SearchHost.exe. Open Task Manager, locate
SearchHost.exe, and use the available restart or end-task action. Then test Search again. - Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 reset procedure. The documented
ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1script requires administrator permissions. Run it only when the earlier steps have not corrected the problem.
The reset script can temporarily affect result relevance while Windows recreates its search data. Allow the replacement index time to build before evaluating the quality of matches.
Last-resort repair for account-specific corruption
Some failures are limited to one Windows account and persist after the troubleshooter, SearchHost restart and reset procedure. Microsoft documents a deeper repair that regenerates the Microsoft.Windows.Client.CBS package data and the Search registry key.
This is an advanced operation, not a routine way to turn indexing on. Use it only with appropriate care, administrator access and a current backup. A registry or package-data change can affect the account beyond Search, so record the original state and follow Microsoft’s documented sequence exactly rather than deleting keys or folders at random.
How to tell which repair you need

Timing and maintenance expectations
Initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours according to Microsoft’s current 2026 support guidance. A full rebuild has a separate, longer estimate: Microsoft Learn says it can take up to 24 hours. These are upper-bound guidance figures, not countdowns; the actual duration depends on the number of items, selected locations, file content and whether the PC is active or on battery.

After the initial pass, Windows updates the index in the background. A healthy index therefore does not need frequent manual rebuilding. Rebuild only for persistent stale or incomplete results, and keep the scope focused so routine updates do not process data you never search.
