Yes—you can turn a web page into revision notes and a self-test with Gemini. The most reliable workflow is to add the page as a source in Gemini Notebook, ask focused questions for a structured study guide, then generate a quiz in Gemini Apps (or, where available, Gemini in Chrome with the page open). Check every important answer against the original page: Google warns that Gemini Notebook can make mistakes.
Google’s source-import documentation also sets an important boundary: a URL import reads the text of an HTML page, not its images, embedded videos, nested pages, or paywalled material.

Check the page before importing it
URL ingestion works best when the page is a conventional, publicly accessible article whose essential information appears as selectable HTML text. Before you paste the address, check these conditions:
- Text is available without a login. A paywall or sign-in can prevent Notebook from obtaining the content.
- The key information is in the page text. A chart, scanned image, infographic or interactive visualization may not be represented in the imported source.
- Embedded media is optional. URL import does not bring in embedded video. For a public YouTube URL, captions must be available and only the transcript is imported.
- Linked pages are separate sources. A nested webpage is not automatically followed. Add each relevant URL separately if you have permission to use it.
If the page fails these checks, use an accessible text version, paste the relevant passage, or upload a supported file instead. Only upload or share material you have the right to use.
Step 1: Add the web page to a Gemini Notebook
- Open Gemini on the web and create or open a notebook.
- Select Add sources.
- Paste the complete URL of the web page and confirm the import.
- Wait for the source to finish processing, then open the notebook chat or its source summary.
- If the notebook contains several sources, name the page in your question so Gemini uses the intended one.
Google describes a notebook source as a copied or automatically synced version of imported material. The exact sync behaviour can vary by source, so treat the imported copy as a working reference rather than assuming it is always the latest version. Before asking for polished notes, establish what Gemini actually received. Use a prompt such as:
Use only the source titled “<page title>”. List its main headings and state which sections, tables, images or media were not available in the imported text. Do not fill gaps from general knowledge.This catches a common failure: the page may look complete in a browser while the imported text omits the diagram or interactive element that carries the real explanation.

Step 2: Ask for useful study notes
A request like “summarise this page” often produces a short overview that is hard to revise from. Tell Gemini who the learner is, what they need to know and how the result should be organised. Specific questions are especially important when a notebook has multiple selected sources.
A dependable study-guide prompt
Using only the source “<page title>”, create a study guide for a <learner level> student preparing for <exam or goal>.Organise it as:1. A five-sentence overview2. Key terms with plain-language definitions3. The main ideas in the order the page presents them4. A cause-and-effect or step-by-step sequence where the source provides one5. Facts, dates, formulas or rules that must be memorised6. Three common misunderstandings that the source itself helps resolve7. Ten self-test questions, without answersAfter each factual point, include the source section or heading it came from. Mark anything the page does not establish as “not stated in the source”.The final instruction prevents Gemini from silently supplying plausible information that was not on the page. Ask for a shorter or deeper version in a follow-up rather than regenerating everything:

Step 3: Turn the material into a quiz
Generate the quiz only after you have confirmed that the source was imported correctly. A quiz should test the page’s claims, not Gemini’s background knowledge.

- Open Gemini Apps and start a new chat or continue from the study-guide conversation.
- Add the page text or supported file as context if it is not already available in the conversation.
- Ask for the question types, difficulty and feedback format you want.
- Take the quiz before revealing explanations. This makes it a retrieval exercise rather than a passive reading task.
- Use the available options for hints, follow-up questions, additional questions and feedback on strengths and areas to focus on.
Try this prompt:

When Gemini in Chrome is available for your account and region, open the page you want to study, invoke Gemini in Chrome, and ask it to create a quiz using the current page. Google currently lists English availability in India and the United States, so the feature may not appear elsewhere or in another language. If the page is dynamically loaded, includes a paywall, or depends on images, ask Gemini to state what it could access before you trust the questions.

Make the quiz diagnostically useful
Specify what a wrong answer should do. For example:

Group my results into “secure”, “needs review” and “not yet understood”. For every missed question, name the exact concept to revisit and create one easier follow-up question and one harder transfer question. Do not count an answer as correct when it reaches the right choice for the wrong reason.This turns a one-time quiz into a review plan. It does not prove that the generated assessment measures learning accurately; no learning-effectiveness percentage is established for this workflow in Google’s product documentation.
Step 4: Use a study notebook for an ongoing goal
A Gemini study notebook is different from a single quiz chat. It is designed around a continuing goal and can provide diagnostic quizzes, personalised bite-sized lessons, progress tracking, flashcards and infographics. Google says study notebooks require Keep Activity to be on. When Keep Activity is off, you cannot create or access study notebooks, and other notebook capabilities such as chat autosaving, notebook memory and adding Google Drive files are also unavailable.
- Go to gemini.google.com and open the study-notebook feature if it is offered to your account.
- Set one precise goal, such as “Understand the causes and consequences of the French Revolution for a secondary-school exam”.
- Attach or add the permitted sources that support that goal.
- Complete the diagnostic activity honestly; guessing gives the system a poorer picture of what you know.
- Follow the bite-sized lesson, then use flashcards or a practice quiz to retrieve the information without looking.
- Record concepts that remain weak and ask for a targeted lesson rather than restarting the whole notebook.
Choose the goal carefully: Google instructs users to make a new study notebook when they need a different goal because the existing goal cannot be edited after setup. Study notebooks are available through the Gemini web app and Google describes a gradual rollout; they are not available in the Gemini mobile app according to the current help material.
Understand what URL import does—and does not—capture
The URL importer scrapes text content from an HTML webpage. It does not import the page’s images, embedded videos or nested webpages, and paywalled pages are unsupported. A PDF reached through a URL is handled as a PDF source rather than as ordinary HTML. Public YouTube URLs have separate requirements: captions must exist, and Gemini imports only the transcript.

Gemini’s fluent wording can hide an omitted qualifier, a reversed relationship or an answer that is not supported by the page. Google’s official warning is direct: “Gemini Notebook can make mistakes and its answers don’t reflect Google’s views.” Treat generated notes as a draft derived from the source, not as an authority.
A practical verification pass
- Open the original page beside the generated notes.
- Check every number, date, named entity, definition and “always” or “never” statement.
- Confirm that a quiz answer is explicitly supported by the page rather than merely reasonable from general knowledge.
- Check whether a missing image, table or footnote changes the meaning.
- Correct the note or question yourself and ask Gemini to regenerate only the affected item.
Use a correction prompt such as:
The answer to question 6 is not supported by the source. Re-read the section titled “<heading>”, quote the relevant sentence, and rewrite the question so that exactly one answer is defensible from that text.For high-stakes subjects, verify against an additional authoritative source or your teacher’s material. A source-centred prompt reduces invention; it cannot eliminate model errors.
Availability, account and source-capacity details
Notebook features and study tools are not identical across platforms. Google says the Gemini Notebook connected app and notebooks are available in the Gemini web app and Gemini mobile app, with a gradual rollout. Google also describes notebooks in the Gemini app on Mac, but says the connected app is not yet available there. Study notebooks have the separate restrictions described above.
Google’s notebook help states that source capacity depends on the user’s Google AI plan and gives a maximum of 600 sources. That figure is a plan-related product limit, not a universal allowance for every account; check the current limits shown for your plan before planning a large reading project.
Troubleshoot common failures
“Add sources” is missing
The feature may not have reached your account, you may be in a different Gemini surface, or the notebook type may not support the action. Try the Gemini web app, confirm that you are signed in to the intended account, and check Google’s current help page for rollout and platform notes.
The notes ignore the page
Name the source in the prompt, select only that source if the notebook allows it, and ask Gemini to quote the relevant heading. If the imported source is empty or partial, switch to pasted text or an authorised file.
The quiz contains details that are not on the page
Tell Gemini to use only the named source, require a supporting quotation for each answer, and regenerate the offending question. If the page relies on a diagram or video, supply the missing text or transcript first.
The imported article is out of date
Check whether the notebook stores a copy or an automatically synced version, then compare the source date with the live page. Re-add the URL or provide the current text when a time-sensitive fact matters.
Study notebook creation is blocked
Check that Keep Activity is on. Google says study notebooks cannot be created or accessed while it is off. Also check that you are using gemini.google.com rather than the mobile app, where study notebooks are not currently offered.
A repeatable 20-minute workflow
- Minute 1–2: Choose an accessible, text-rich page and decide whether you need notes, a one-off quiz or a continuing goal.
- Minute 3–5: Add the URL to a Notebook or provide the page text in Gemini Apps. Ask Gemini to report what it could and could not import.
- Minute 6–10: Generate a structured guide with terms, sequence, key facts and source headings.
- Minute 11–15: Generate a mixed-format quiz that withholds answers until you respond.
- Minute 16–18: Take the quiz without looking at the guide; request explanations tied to the source.
- Minute 19–20: Verify missed answers against the page and create two follow-up questions for each weak concept.
This process keeps the page as the evidence base while using Gemini for organisation, question generation and feedback. It also makes the limits visible before they can turn into faulty study material.
