How to Turn the Ctrl-Key Mouse Pointer Circle On or Off in Windows 11

Windows 11 can briefly circle your mouse pointer whenever you press Ctrl. The switch is a built-in option named Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key. To change it, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings, choose Pointer Options, and use the checkbox under Visibility. Select OK to apply the change.

Microsoft describes the feature as “a fast way to find a mouse pointer by circling it when you hit the CTRL key.” It is a temporary location cue: the circle appears when you press Ctrl rather than remaining around the pointer continuously. Microsoft documents the control in its Change mouse settings guidance.

What the Ctrl mouse indicator does

The option highlights the pointer’s current location with a circle when Windows detects a press of the Ctrl key. It is useful when the pointer is difficult to spot on a busy desktop, across several monitors, or after you have moved your hand away from the pointer and need to locate it quickly.

The effect is momentary. Windows does not permanently draw a ring around the cursor, and enabling it does not change the pointer’s size, color, or shape. Those are separate appearance controls in Windows 11’s Accessibility settings.

Turn on the pointer circle in Windows 11

Use the following route in the current Windows 11 Settings app. The final control is in the classic Mouse Properties dialog, which opens from Settings.

  1. Open Settings. You can select the Settings app from Start or press Windows + I.
  2. Open the mouse page. Select Bluetooth & devices in the left sidebar, then select Mouse.
  3. Open the full mouse dialog. Scroll to Related settings and select Additional mouse settings. Windows opens Mouse Properties in a separate dialog.
  4. Choose pointer options. Select the Pointer Options tab.
  5. Enable the location cue. In the Visibility section, check Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.
  6. Save the setting. Select OK. Press and release Ctrl to make Windows circle the pointer.

The checkbox applies to the Ctrl-key shortcut itself; you do not need to hold a mouse button or launch another utility. If you press either Ctrl key on a standard keyboard, Windows uses that keypress to show the cue when the option is enabled.

What you should see after enabling it

Move the pointer to a location that is easy to recognize, then press Ctrl once. A circle should briefly identify the pointer. The circle follows the pointer’s current position, so pressing Ctrl does not move the pointer or click anything. If you do not notice it, try a plain press rather than holding Ctrl while another shortcut runs, and test against a simple desktop background.

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
  2. Under Related settings, select Additional mouse settings.
  3. In Mouse Properties, open Pointer Options.
  4. Under Visibility, clear Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key.
  5. Select OK to save.

After you clear the box, pressing Ctrl no longer produces the location circle. Other Ctrl shortcuts—such as copy, paste, or browser commands—continue to work normally; this option only controls the visual pointer cue.

Find the setting if your menus look different

Windows 11 builds can present Settings labels or spacing somewhat differently, but the destination remains the classic Mouse Properties window and its Pointer Options > Visibility section. Look specifically for Additional mouse settings under Related settings rather than searching for a separate app called “Mouse Indicator.” That phrase is a common description of the effect, not Microsoft’s checkbox label.

Microsoft’s support article covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 uses a different Settings grouping (Settings > Devices > Mouse), so do not use that older route as the Windows 11 path. On Windows 11, begin with Bluetooth & devices. The official route and label are documented by Microsoft Support.

Ctrl-triggered circle versus a pointer that is always easier to see

Windows 11 has another set of controls for people who want a more visible pointer all the time. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch to change the pointer’s style, color, and size. These controls alter the pointer’s persistent appearance; they do not enable or disable the Ctrl-triggered circle. Microsoft documents those accessibility options in Make your mouse, keyboard, and other input devices easier to use.

Choose the Ctrl cue when you usually lose the pointer only occasionally and want an on-demand highlight. Choose a larger or contrasting pointer when finding it is a frequent problem and you want visibility without pressing a key. You can use both controls together: the persistent pointer styling remains in place, and the Ctrl circle can still provide a quick location confirmation.

Troubleshoot when the circle does not appear

Confirm the checkbox and save action

Reopen Mouse Properties > Pointer Options and check that the box is selected. Select OK, not just the window’s close button, so the change is committed through the dialog. Press Ctrl after the dialog closes; the indicator is not shown while you are still changing settings.

Make sure you are in Pointer Options

The setting is not on the main Mouse page, in the Buttons tab, or under Accessibility. The exact sequence is Additional mouse settings > Pointer Options > Visibility. If you opened a different mouse utility supplied by a hardware manufacturer, close it and use the Windows Mouse Properties dialog reached from Settings.

Check which key you are pressing

The option responds to the keyboard’s Ctrl key. Test both the left and right Ctrl keys if one does not produce the cue. A compact keyboard may place Ctrl in an unusual position, and a remapped or malfunctioning key will not generate the expected event.

  • Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)

Test with a simple pointer position

Move the pointer over the desktop and press Ctrl once. The circle is temporary, so it can be easy to miss if you are watching another part of the screen or pressing Ctrl as part of a longer shortcut. A single, deliberate press makes the behavior easiest to verify.

Account for build-level wording differences

Settings labels can vary slightly across Windows versions and builds. If the wording is not identical, look for the visibility checkbox in Mouse Properties rather than assuming the feature was removed. Microsoft’s current instructions cover the Windows 11 route and identify the control by its full label.

When to use each visibility method

Use the Ctrl cue for occasional searches

The temporary circle leaves your normal pointer unchanged until you request help. This is a good fit if you work with many windows, switch between displays, or sometimes lose track of the pointer but do not want a larger cursor permanently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use pointer styling for continuous visibility

A larger pointer or a high-contrast color is better when low vision, display scaling, or a constantly busy background makes the pointer hard to distinguish. Configure those persistent choices at Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch, independently of the Ctrl checkbox.

  • Easy installation - refer to user manual for instructions

Use both for layered feedback

Persistent styling helps you follow the pointer during ordinary work, while the Ctrl-triggered circle gives a deliberate, short-lived confirmation of its exact position. Neither setting installs software or requires a separate mouse feature.

Privacy, software, and hardware requirements

This is a Windows 11 setting documented by Microsoft, not a download or add-on. You do not need a special mouse model, a vendor utility, or a paid product. A working keyboard Ctrl key is needed to invoke the cue, and the pointer must be present on the Windows desktop or an application for the circle to be visible.

Changing the checkbox does not alter pointer movement, button assignments, or keyboard shortcuts. It only controls whether Windows draws the temporary location highlight after a Ctrl press.

Quick reference

  • Enable: Check Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key in Mouse Properties > Pointer Options > Visibility, then select OK.
  • Disable: Clear that same checkbox and select OK.
  • Expected effect: Pressing Ctrl briefly circles the current pointer location when enabled.
  • Persistent alternative: Use Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch for pointer size, style, or color.
  • Official wording: Microsoft calls the feature Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key, not “Mouse Indicator.”
