How to Turn Steam Frame CAD Files Into a Lifesize Display Stand

Use Valve’s released Steam Frame CAD as reference geometry, then build a separate base and cradle around the configuration you want to display. Valve has made the CAD files and electrical-interface information available for non-commercial use. The product page’s published 175 × 95 × 110 mm envelope covers the core module plus facial interface only; it is not a measurement for the complete headset with headstrap. Download the files, verify their units and assemblies, and inspect the full geometry before fixing any stand dimensions.

What Valve actually released

Valve’s Steam Hardware announcement states: “Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information are now available for non-commercial use.” That establishes two useful facts for a display-stand project: there is official dimensional geometry to work from, and the announced permission is limited to non-commercial use.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The announcement does not, by itself, establish a particular file format, a complete print-and-assembly procedure, recommended support points, or a finished stand design. Treat the downloaded CAD as a dimensional reference rather than as a ready-made pedestal. Your stand remains a separate mechanical design that must support the headset safely.

Valve’s product page lists 175 mm × 95 mm × 110 mm for the “core module + facial interface.” Because that description excludes the headstrap and does not describe every possible wearing or display configuration, do not use those three numbers as the outer size of the entire headset. The actual released geometry should determine the clearances, contact areas and overall height of your stand.

Decide what “lifesize” means for your stand

A lifesize display should reproduce the headset at a one-to-one scale, but the display goal still affects the cradle. Decide the presentation before modeling.

Headset-only display

This version shows the headset as a product object, with no attempt to reproduce how it sits on a person’s head. A low cradle can support the lower housing while leaving the lenses, facial interface and controls visible. It usually gives the cleanest view and the smallest footprint.

Worn-position display

This version represents the orientation a user would see when wearing the device. The headstrap, rear structure and facial interface become important to the support design. You may need a taller base or a mannequin-like support, and the cradle must avoid forcing the strap into a shape that the CAD model does not represent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exploded or technical display

You can use the CAD to position separate components with gaps between them, but that is no longer a single lifesize replica. Label the display as an exploded presentation and keep each component on its own support. Do not imply that an exploded arrangement is the assembled product envelope.

Check the CAD before designing around it

Open Valve’s official Steam Frame CAD download and inspect the files directly. The accessible announcement does not establish the file formats, naming scheme or whether every accessory and fastener is included, so confirm those details in the download rather than assuming them.

  1. Make a working copy. Keep the original download unchanged and work in a separate project folder. Record the file name, revision information and the date you downloaded it.
  2. Identify the intended assembly. Look for a model that corresponds to the configuration you will display: core module, facial interface, headstrap and any other supplied parts. If several assemblies are present, open each one before choosing the reference.
  3. Verify units. Check the CAD software’s document units and measure a known feature. A unit mismatch can turn a full-size model into a miniature or an oversized part without producing an obvious error message.
  4. Check scale numerically. Measure the core-module-plus-facial-interface envelope and compare it with Valve’s published 175 × 95 × 110 mm figure. Agreement is a useful sanity check, not proof that every component or headstrap is included.
  5. Inspect orientation. Establish which direction is up when the headset is resting in the pose you want to show. Save a reference view or create construction planes so your stand model uses the same coordinate system.
  6. Look for hidden or suppressed bodies. Expand the assembly tree, show suppressed components where possible and note any items that are only cosmetic. A stand designed around a hidden body can collide with the real exterior.
  7. Measure the actual contact surfaces. Record broad, non-sensitive areas that can carry load. Avoid assuming that a flat-looking face is intended to bear weight; the CAD is geometry, not a set of Valve-approved support instructions.

Do not finalize a cradle until these checks are complete. If the software cannot import the supplied format, convert a copy and retain the original files for reference. The conversion itself can alter units, assembly positions or small details, so recheck the envelope after conversion.

Separate the reference model from the stand model

Keep the headset bodies in a reference layer or a separate CAD component. Build the base and cradle as new parts around that reference. This separation makes it easier to adjust clearances, change the display angle or create a second stand without modifying Valve’s geometry.

Use clearance geometry, not a tight copy

Create an offset or clearance volume around every area that could touch the stand. The exact gap depends on your fabrication method and surface finish; Valve does not publish a stand clearance value. Start conservatively, prototype it, and reduce the gap only after you have confirmed that the headset can be placed and removed without scraping.

Protect the visible surfaces

Put contact on robust exterior regions and keep the facial interface, lenses, cameras, vents and controls free unless your display concept specifically requires otherwise. Add rounded edges to the cradle and use a replaceable soft layer if the finished stand will contact painted or coated surfaces. Any padding is a design choice, not a Valve specification.

Allow insertion and removal

A cradle that captures the headset from all sides may be stable but difficult to use. Provide a clear approach path: the viewer should be able to lower the headset into place and lift it out without twisting against a retaining lip. Model the insertion path as a swept volume and check it in the CAD assembly.

Design the base for stability

The base keeps the display from tipping when the headset is placed, removed or lightly touched. Stability depends on the combined center of mass, the footprint and the direction of an applied force, not on the headset envelope alone.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Choose a footprint

Draw the outline of the base on the floor plane and make the support polygon broad enough that the projected center of mass remains inside it in every intended display pose. A taller or tilted headset needs more resistance to tipping than a low, centered one. If you cannot determine the center of mass from the CAD, treat the upper assembly as a conservative load and test the finished stand physically.

Control the display angle

Set the viewing angle from the audience’s eye level and the shelf or table where the stand will sit. A small rearward tilt can expose the front of the headset, but it also moves the center of mass toward the edge of the footprint. Use a wide base or a lower cradle to compensate.

Add weight only when useful

A heavier base can reduce sliding and tipping, but weight does not fix a poor contact geometry. If you add a ballast cavity, close it securely and keep the ballast inaccessible during normal handling. The CAD files do not specify a required base mass, so choose it through prototype testing rather than by copying an arbitrary number.

  • ⑤【PLA Recommend Settings】To achieve the best printing results with SUNLU PLA filament, we recommend printing at a nozzle temperature of 200-230°C, a bed temperature of 50-65°C, and a printing speed of 50-100mm/s.

Prevent sliding

Rubber feet, a textured underside or a recessed shelf location can increase friction. These are optional construction choices. Ensure that any foot does not make the base rock, and leave enough clearance for cleaning beneath the stand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the cradle around real contact points

The cradle should support the headset without masking the features that make the display recognizable. Favor multiple broad supports over a single narrow peg.

Use three-point support as a starting layout

Three separated contact regions can define a stable plane while allowing most of the housing to remain visible. Place them where the reference geometry is strong and where the insertion path is clear. If the headset rocks, widen a support or add a fourth stabilizing guide rather than tightening every surface around the model.

Keep loads away from delicate features

Do not use lenses, buttons, cameras, cable sockets or thin decorative edges as structural hooks. If a feature is uncertain, classify it as display-only and support the neighboring housing instead. The released CAD does not label approved bearing surfaces.

Make the support adjustable where practical

Slots, interchangeable pads or a removable rear guide let you tune fit after the first prototype. An adjustable interface is particularly useful when the downloaded assembly differs from the configuration you ultimately display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hide the cradle, not the headset

Keep support arms low and aligned with the visual lines of the product. A neutral color and a matte finish generally draw less attention than a glossy or highly contrasting support, but appearance is a presentation choice rather than a technical requirement.

Model the stand step by step

  1. Import or link the reference assembly. Lock it in the chosen one-to-one scale and orientation.
  2. Create a floor plane and viewing plane. The floor plane defines the base; the viewing plane represents the primary audience direction.
  3. Mark the support zones. Sketch small pads or saddles on robust exterior regions, leaving a clearance volume around the headset.
  4. Connect the pads to a spine or platform. Use ribs or a shallow tray rather than filling the entire underside. This reduces material and keeps the design inspectable.
  5. Design the base. Extend the footprint beyond the support structure, add rounded corners and provide any ballast or fastening provisions.
  6. Add retention features. A low front lip, rear stop or side guide can prevent a slide, but each must leave a defined removal path.
  7. Check interference. Run a collision check through the full insertion and removal motion, not just the final resting position.
  8. Check visibility. Switch to a shaded view from the intended audience angle and confirm that the cradle does not hide the facial interface or other key features.
  9. Split for fabrication if needed. Divide the base and cradle along seams that are easy to align. Add locating keys or fastener holes only after confirming your fabrication process.
  10. Export a copy for fabrication. Preserve the editable master and label exported files with scale, orientation and revision information.

Choose a fabrication method

Valve does not prescribe a printer, material or print setting for a Steam Frame stand. Select a method based on the size of your base, the accuracy of the cradle and the tools available to you.

Method Where it fits Decisions you must make Limitations to check
FDM 3D printing Useful for iterative prototypes and a custom base-and-cradle assembly. Printer build volume, layer orientation, support strategy, material and fastener method. Visible layer lines, anisotropic strength, warping and fit changes caused by your machine and material.
Print service Useful when you do not own a suitable printer or want a larger finished part. Send a verified file, select a process and specify the required scale and surface quality. Provider-specific tolerances, minimum wall rules, shipping damage and higher cost than a home prototype.
Machined or fabricated base with a printed cradle Useful when the base needs extra mass while the contact geometry remains custom. How the cradle attaches, how the base is finished and how replacement pads are fitted. More parts and assembly work; the joint must resist rocking and loosening.

These are general design options, not Valve recommendations. PLA and a generic FDM printer are plausible starting points for a prototype, but the final material should match the expected handling, temperature and appearance of the display location.

Prototype before making the final stand

Print or fabricate only the parts needed to answer the next fit question. A small cradle test can reveal a unit error or an impossible insertion path before you commit to a full base.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Test scale. Place the prototype against the reference model and verify that the headset seats at the intended height and angle.
  2. Test contact. Confirm that the support touches the intended exterior regions and does not press on lenses, controls or thin edges.
  3. Test removal. Lift the headset out repeatedly using the planned handling motion. Watch for snagging, scraping and flexing.
  4. Test stability. Apply gentle pushes from the front, sides and rear. The stand should not tip, rock or slide under ordinary handling.
  5. Test assembly. Install every fastener, pad and ballast component. Check that seams close fully and that no screw head enters the headset’s clearance volume.
  6. Revise one variable at a time. Change the support height, gap or base footprint separately so you can identify which adjustment solved a problem.

Keep notes on each revision, including the CAD file name and the physical change. That record prevents you from repeating a failed fit when you export the final parts.

Finish and assemble the display

After the fit is proven, clean the fabricated parts and remove burrs or sharp edges. Dry-fit the complete assembly before applying adhesive or permanent fasteners. If you use pads, make them replaceable so worn material can be renewed without remodeling the cradle.

Route any optional cable through the base only if the display needs power or lighting. The electrical-interface information released by Valve is not a stand wiring guide; do not connect to an interface unless you understand the required electrical conditions and have verified that the display use is appropriate.

Place the completed stand on a level surface, confirm that the base sits flat and inspect the headset after the first hour of display. Look for unexpected pressure marks, pad migration or a seam that is opening under load.

Commercial-use boundary

The announced permission is for non-commercial use. If you intend to sell the stand, sell CAD-derived files, manufacture stands for a business, or use the geometry in a commercial display service, follow Valve’s linked commercial-use instructions and contact Valve. Do not infer that a personal prototype, a free download or a modified cradle automatically grants permission for sales.

Troubleshoot common failures

The model imports tiny or enormous

Recheck the CAD document units, the import dialog and the measured envelope. Compare the core module plus facial interface against the published 175 × 95 × 110 mm reference, then correct the scale in the reference copy before remodeling the stand.

The cradle fits the body but not the displayed configuration

You may have used the core-module assembly while intending to show the headstrap or another component. Return to the assembly tree, identify the exact display configuration and remodel the supports around that geometry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The headset rocks in the cradle

Find which contact is carrying the load and which pad is floating. Widen the support, lower the center of the cradle or add a separated stabilizer. Do not solve rocking by tightening a contact against a delicate feature.

The stand tips forward

Move the support rearward, lower the headset or enlarge the footprint in the tipping direction. A heavier base can help, but verify that the combined center of mass is still inside the support polygon.

The headset is difficult to remove

Inspect the insertion path for a retaining lip or side guide that blocks the intended motion. Increase the opening, shorten the guide or split the cradle into a removable upper piece.

The printed parts warp or do not align

Check the fabrication method’s build-volume and tolerance limits, then split the design at a flatter seam and add alignment features. Reprint a small joint test before replacing the entire stand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the CAD can—and cannot—tell you

The official files can provide reference geometry for a one-to-one display, but they do not replace physical validation. The accessible Valve material does not establish a full-headset-with-headstrap dimension, a preferred stand pose, print settings, support points, material choice or a tested assembly sequence. Those decisions belong to the stand designer.

A community post uses the phrase “3D print a mockup” when discussing the released files. That wording describes a community idea, not a Valve stand workflow or evidence of a completed, validated build. Treat it as inspiration only and verify every fit and safety decision yourself.
