Turn Private Browsing on or off in current Safari
- To turn it on: Open Safari, tap More, then tap New Private Tab. Safari opens a private tab.
- To turn it off: Tap More, then tap New Tab to switch to regular browsing.
Apple’s current instructions use the More control. When Private Browsing is active, the address bar appears black or dark; in regular browsing, it appears white or gray. These color cues can help you tell which mode is open.

Use the older tab controls on iOS 17 and earlier
Apple’s instructions for iOS 17 and earlier use the Tabs button and tab groups rather than the current More menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- To enter Private Browsing: Open Safari, tap Tabs, swipe to the Private tab group, then select a tab.
- To leave: Tap Tabs and switch to the group labeled with a number of tabs.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide also describes switching tab groups with the Tabs button and swiping on the tab bar. The controls differ by iOS version, so use the path that matches your iPhone’s software.

What Private Browsing changes—and what it does not
Apple says Safari does not remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information while Private Browsing is on. Private tabs do not appear in iPhone History or in the list of tabs on your other Apple devices. Downloaded items remain on your iPhone.
Private Browsing reduces the browsing information Safari retains in its usual history and tab views; it is not a promise that all activity is hidden from every person or service. Apple also describes protections against known trackers, URL-based tracking, and advanced fingerprinting techniques. Those are protections, not a guarantee that all tracking is prevented.

If Private Browsing is locked or the option is missing
Private tabs may be locked, not turned off
On a passcode-protected iPhone, Private Browsing locks when it is not in use, though it may not lock immediately. To review the related setting, go to Settings > Apps > Safari. Depending on your device, access may require your iPhone passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. This locking control is separate from switching between Private and regular tab groups.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A work or school policy may disable it
Apple documents that an administrator can disable Private Browsing through Safari settings on managed devices running iOS 26 or later. If your iPhone belongs to an employer or school, check whether device management or restrictions are controlling the option. The steps available on a managed phone may depend on your organization’s policy; contact its administrator if needed.

If the option is missing on a personal iPhone, first confirm you are using the tab controls for your iOS version and check whether restrictions or device management are present. Apple’s cited guidance does not establish a current consumer Screen Time path for restoring Private Browsing, so avoid relying on an outdated menu sequence.
