Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Short answer: there is no universally supported phone or generic Bluetooth method for turning pages in the native Kindle or Kobo eReader software. On a compatible Kindle, Amazon’s documented hands-free option is VoiceView, which reads the book aloud and can advance pages automatically. On Kobo, the officially supported forward/back control is the Kobo Remote itself, so it does not satisfy a strict “without a page-turner remote” requirement. A clip-on screen sensor controlled by an RF handset is another Kindle workaround, but that is still a dedicated physical remote.
First, define what “remote page turning” means
People use that phrase for several different setups. You might want to advance an eReader without touching its glass while reading in bed, keep your hands under a blanket, operate the device from a stand, or use a phone as a wireless button. Those are not equivalent technically.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Hands-free reading: the reader itself speaks the book and moves forward automatically.
- Wireless control: another device sends next/previous commands to the native Kindle or Kobo reader.
- Physical remote accessory: a handset or sensor presses the page-turn control for you.
- Separate software: a phone, browser, or modified reading environment exposes its own controls rather than controlling the eReader’s native book interface.
The distinction matters because Bluetooth support on an eReader does not imply that it accepts generic keyboard, mouse, phone, or clicker commands. Before buying anything, identify whether you need silent page commands, automatic spoken reading, or simply a way to avoid touching the screen.

A quick requirements check prevents most disappointing purchases. Write down the exact Kindle or Kobo model and generation, whether audio is acceptable, whether you need forward and backward movement, and whether another device or a physical accessory is allowed. Also decide whether you need to control the native eReader book interface or would accept reading in a separate phone app.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Silent or spoken? VoiceView is practical only if listening to the book is acceptable. It is not a silent button replacement.
- Forward only or both directions? Some hands-free playback advances automatically, while a remote with two buttons can go forward and backward.
- Native reader or separate app? Controls exposed in a phone app do not prove that the physical Kindle or Kobo accepts commands.
- Accessory allowed? A sensor clip and RF handset, or the official Kobo Remote, are still dedicated remote hardware even if they keep your hand away from the screen.
- How much setup is acceptable? Pairing, battery replacement, clip placement, and model verification all add steps compared with simply using the reader’s own controls.
These distinctions also determine what “remote” means for your situation. If your only goal is avoiding a difficult touch gesture, a built-in button or VoiceView gesture may be enough. If you need to sit several feet away, you are looking at a radio accessory, not a phone feature established for every reader.
What works on Kindle
Use VoiceView for automatic, hands-free advancement
VoiceView is Amazon’s documented route for hands-free Kindle reading. It is an accessibility and audio feature: the Kindle reads text aloud and can automatically turn pages as it reaches the end of the current page. This is the only option in the official guidance that genuinely avoids a separate page-turner remote.
VoiceView is not a silent remote-control mode. The book is spoken, and the page advances as part of playback. It is therefore suitable when audio is acceptable, but not when you want to read silently while using a phone as a hidden button. It also changes the reading experience: the Kindle is following spoken playback rather than waiting for a wireless next-page command.
Turn pages manually with VoiceView gestures
Amazon’s VoiceView guide documents two-finger swipes for navigation. A two-finger swipe from right to left moves to the next page, while a two-finger swipe from left to right returns to the previous page. These gestures still require contact with the Kindle, but they can be easier to perform when the standard touch targets are difficult to use.
Use the gesture direction consistently and test it in a book before settling in. A gesture that moves backward is useful when VoiceView has advanced farther than you wanted; automatic playback alone is less convenient for precise rereading.
Because VoiceView behavior and availability vary by Kindle generation, confirm your exact model before relying on these gestures. Amazon’s model-identification material lists VoiceView on many Kindle generations and physical page-turn buttons on several Oasis generations. A model with built-in buttons may already solve the problem without any wireless accessory, although the buttons are on the reader rather than remote from it.
Check the model before troubleshooting
- Open Amazon’s Kindle identification information and determine the exact generation and model name.
- Check whether that model lists VoiceView support.
- If you need silent operation, note whether the model has physical page-turn buttons, as several Oasis generations do.
- Decide whether you need automatic playback or individual next/previous commands.
- Only then choose a setup; instructions for one generation should not be assumed to apply to every Kindle.
Why an ordinary Bluetooth clicker is not a Kindle solution
Amazon’s Bluetooth guidance explicitly says that pairing a Bluetooth phone, keyboard, or mouse is not supported. A Kindle may have Bluetooth hardware for supported features, yet still reject the input profile needed by a generic page-turn button. Consequently, a standard Bluetooth shutter, presentation clicker, phone, keyboard, or mouse should not be described as a plug-and-play Kindle page-turner.
Recommended Free Tools
Pairing screens and Bluetooth discovery can be misleading. Seeing a Kindle name on another device, or seeing Bluetooth listed in Kindle settings, does not mean that next-page commands are accepted. The missing piece is supported input behavior in the Kindle reader software, not merely a radio connection.

If a listing claims that a particular Bluetooth accessory controls Kindle pages, treat that as a product-specific claim requiring compatibility evidence for your model and software version. The general Bluetooth capability of the reader is not evidence that the accessory will work.
The physical sensor-clip workaround for Kindle
A different category uses a small sensor clip placed on the Kindle’s screen and an RF handheld controller. The sensor detects the controller’s signal and produces a page-turn action on the display. This can let you hold the handset away from the reader, but it does not meet a strict interpretation of “without a page-turner remote”: the handset remains a dedicated remote.
Compatibility is product- and fit-dependent. The cited manual describes the category, not universal support across Kindle generations or a guaranteed current model. Before purchasing, verify all of the following in the specific listing and manual:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- the supported Kindle model and generation;
- where the clip must sit and whether it fits your case or screen protector;
- whether the controller provides forward only or both forward and backward actions;
- the stated operating range and battery type; and
- how the accessory is removed without disturbing the display or cover.
Check that the clip does not cover text, sensors, or a power control, and test it with your usual case installed. A fit that works on a bare reader may fail when a cover changes the screen edge or viewing angle. Do not assume that an RF handset is interchangeable with a Bluetooth clicker; they are different accessory categories.
Think of this as a last-resort physical workaround for readers who need remote operation but cannot use VoiceView. It is not a phone-based method and should not be generalized from one manual to every Kindle.
What works on Kobo
No universal phone control is established
The official Kobo material reviewed does not establish a general way for a phone to send next- and previous-page commands to the native Kobo eReader software. Ideas involving a browser, a community tool, or a phone reading app may describe a different software environment, but they are not proof that a stock Kobo reader can be controlled from a phone.
If your requirement is specifically “use my phone to turn pages on the Kobo screen,” there is no broadly supported method to recommend from the official documentation. Confirm the exact model, firmware, and software environment before experimenting with any third-party approach, and expect that it may control an app rather than the Kobo device itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not confuse synchronization with remote control. A phone app may remember reading position or expose its own page buttons while the Kobo continues to operate independently. That is useful for cross-device reading, but it does not establish a wireless command path to the Kobo’s native display.

The official Kobo Remote (and why it does not satisfy the constraint)
Kobo’s official remote provides forward and backward buttons over Bluetooth. Kobo lists support for these eReaders:
| Supported Kobo model | Remote function |
|---|---|
| Clara 2E | Forward and backward page control |
| Clara BW | Forward and backward page control |
| Clara Colour | Forward and backward page control |
| Libra 2 | Forward and backward page control |
| Libra Colour | Forward and backward page control |
| Sage | Forward and backward page control |
| Elipsa | Forward and backward page control |
| Elipsa 2E | Forward and backward page control |
It is the cleanest supported wireless solution for those models, but it is exactly the type of dedicated page-turner remote excluded by the title. Consider it only if the “without a remote” condition is negotiable. A Kobo model with a similar name but absent from this list should not be treated as compatible without confirmation.
Pairing the Kobo Remote
- Hold the remote’s pairing button for three seconds.
- On the Kobo eReader, open the Bluetooth settings and enable Bluetooth.
- Find Kobo Remote in the list of available devices and select it.
- Test both buttons in a book. The forward button should advance and the backward button should return to the previous page.
Kobo states a connection distance of up to 20 metres. Real range can be affected by walls, furniture, the reader’s position, and radio interference, so treat 20 metres as the stated maximum rather than a guaranteed indoor distance. The remote uses one AAA battery. Kobo advises switching Bluetooth off on the eReader when the remote is not in use to conserve reader battery.

- It is not listed: confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the eReader, then repeat the three-second pairing-button hold.
- It was listed but will not operate: remove or forget the pairing if that option is shown, then pair again.
- Only intermittent presses register: move closer to the reader and eliminate obvious obstructions before testing again.
- The remote appears unresponsive: replace its single AAA battery.
- Your model is not in the support list: do not assume compatibility from a similar name; Kobo’s listed models are the documented set.
- It worked, then stopped after a break: check whether Bluetooth was switched off to save battery and turn it back on before trying to reconnect.
Phone and browser ideas: what they can and cannot do
Some phone apps expose page controls when the book is being read inside that app. A browser-based reader or modified software environment may also provide commands unavailable in the native Kindle or Kobo interface. Those are separate use cases: the phone is controlling the app or environment, not necessarily the physical eReader.
There are three questions to ask before investing time in such a setup:
- Where is the book rendered? If it is rendered on the phone, the phone controls its own display; the Kindle or Kobo is not being controlled.
- Is the native eReader software supported? Official support for a phone app does not establish support for a stock Kindle or Kobo reader.
- Does it work on your model and software version? Community instructions can depend on firmware, account state, permissions, or a modified environment.
Also check whether the method preserves your reading position, typography, annotations, and synchronization. A solution that turns pages in a separate app may not mirror the page currently shown on the eReader. It may require keeping the phone awake, granting extra permissions, or accepting a different battery burden.
Without model-specific verification, present these as experiments rather than reliable universal solutions. They also may not provide the same reading position, synchronization, typography, or battery behavior as the native eReader.

Choose the least-complicated method
| Your requirement | Most defensible option | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic page advance and audio is acceptable | Kindle VoiceView | Spoken reading and accessibility behavior replace silent button presses |
| Manual movement with minimal touch | VoiceView two-finger gestures | You still touch the Kindle and must use the documented gesture directions |
| Silent Kindle operation without another device | Use built-in page buttons if your model has them | Only several Oasis generations provide physical page-turn buttons |
| Remote Kindle control from a handset | RF screen-sensor clip | It is still a dedicated physical remote; compatibility is listing-dependent |
| Supported wireless control on a compatible Kobo | Kobo Remote | It violates a strict no-page-turner-remote requirement |
| Phone controls for a separate reading app | That app’s own supported controls | It does not establish control of the native Kindle or Kobo reader |
For a strict interpretation of the title, the practical answers are narrow: Kindle VoiceView if audio is acceptable, or existing physical buttons on a compatible Kindle. On Kobo, no official phone-based substitute is established; the documented remote is an accessory rather than a no-remote workaround.

Troubleshoot by symptom
“My phone sees the reader, but the page does not turn”
Bluetooth discovery only proves that a radio connection or pairing screen exists. It does not prove that the eReader accepts page commands from that device. On Kindle, Amazon’s unsupported-phone, keyboard, and mouse guidance is the decisive limitation. On Kobo, use the documented remote pairing process rather than assuming any Bluetooth input device will work.
“VoiceView reads, but I wanted silent page turns”
That is expected. VoiceView is an audio and accessibility pathway, not a silent remote. Use the two-finger navigation gestures for manual movement, or check whether your Kindle generation has physical page-turn buttons.
“The Kobo Remote will not pair”
Verify the eReader model, enable Bluetooth, hold the remote pairing button for three seconds, and select Kobo Remote from the eReader’s Bluetooth list. If it still fails, re-pair and replace the AAA battery. Switching Bluetooth off after reading saves battery, but it must be enabled during pairing and use.
“A sensor clip worked on someone else’s Kindle”
Do not infer cross-generation compatibility. Sensor placement, case clearance, and the accessory’s supported model list determine whether it will work. Check the particular manual and listing for your exact Kindle generation.
“I only need to turn pages occasionally”
Before adding hardware, test the reader’s own controls. A Kindle with physical buttons, or VoiceView’s two-finger gestures, may solve occasional navigation without pairing, batteries, or a clip. On Kobo, the official remote is the supported option for listed models, but it remains an accessory rather than a hidden phone feature.
Bottom line for Kindle and Kobo readers
There is no universal, supported “use any phone as a page-turner” feature for the native Kindle and Kobo interfaces. Kindle offers a documented hands-free path through VoiceView, which automatically advances spoken books, and some Oasis generations have their own physical page buttons. Kobo’s documented wireless page control is the Kobo Remote for eight listed Bluetooth models, but that is a dedicated remote and therefore outside a strict no-remote request. A Kindle screen-sensor clip can provide RF control, yet it is also a physical remote accessory. Decide first whether audio, built-in buttons, or a separate accessory is acceptable; that choice determines which options remain realistic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my phone as a Bluetooth page-turner for a Kindle?
Do not assume so. Amazon says pairing a Bluetooth phone, keyboard, or mouse is not supported, and generic Bluetooth capability does not establish page-command support. A product-specific claim needs compatibility evidence for your exact Kindle model and software.
Does Kindle VoiceView turn pages automatically?
Yes, on supported Kindle models. VoiceView reads the book aloud and can advance pages as playback reaches the end of a page. It is an audio/accessibility feature, not a silent remote.

Can VoiceView move to the previous page?
Amazon documents two-finger swipes: right to left for the next page and left to right for the previous page. Confirm VoiceView availability for your Kindle generation first.
Which Kobo readers work with the official Kobo Remote?
Kobo lists Clara 2E, Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra 2, Libra Colour, Sage, Elipsa, and Elipsa 2E. The remote provides forward and backward Bluetooth controls, but it is still a dedicated remote.
How do I pair the Kobo Remote?
Hold its pairing button for three seconds, enable Bluetooth in the Kobo eReader’s settings, select Kobo Remote, and test both buttons in a book. Kobo states a range of up to 20 metres and specifies one AAA battery.
Why does Kobo recommend turning Bluetooth off after use?
Kobo advises switching Bluetooth off when the remote is not being used to conserve the eReader’s battery. Bluetooth must be enabled again for pairing and operation.
Will a Kindle screen-sensor clip work with every Kindle?
No. The category is product- and fit-dependent. Check the listing and manual for your exact model and generation, clip placement, case clearance, direction controls, range, and battery requirements.
Is there an official phone method for controlling a native Kobo eReader?
The official material does not establish a universal phone-to-native-reader method. Phone apps, browser readers, or modified environments may expose their own controls, but they should not be presented as guaranteed control of a stock Kobo.
The Bottom Line
For a strict no-remote setup, Kindle VoiceView is the documented hands-free choice if spoken reading is acceptable; compatible Oasis models may also have physical page buttons. Kobo has no established universal phone substitute in its native reader. Its supported wireless solution is the Kobo Remote for eight listed models, while a Kindle sensor clip is likewise a dedicated accessory. Verify your exact model before buying or pairing anything.
