How to Turn On Your Phone’s Built-In Spam Call and Text Protection

Android: open the Google Phone app, go to More options (⋮) > Settings > Caller ID and spam, enable See caller ID & spam, and optionally enable Filter spam calls. In Google Messages, turn on its spam-protection controls. iPhone: use Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification for caller identification, then enable screening or silencing for unknown callers; use Messages > Filter > Manage Filtering > Text Message Filter to sort unknown texts.

These controls identify, screen, silence, filter, block, or report suspicious contacts rather than guaranteeing that every unwanted call or message will stop. Android menus and capabilities vary by device, Android release, carrier, and installed Google apps. iPhone options vary by iOS version and region, so check filtered folders, voicemail, and call history after enabling them.

What your phone’s built-in protection actually does

Spam protection is a group of separate controls, not one universal switch. Call identification labels a number or business before you answer. Screening asks an unknown caller to provide a name and reason before the call rings through. Silencing sends unknown callers directly to voicemail. Automatic filtering suppresses alerts for calls judged to be spam. Text filtering moves suspicious or unknown messages into a separate view, while blocking and reporting prevent future contact or send a sample to the platform or carrier.

The safest setup combines identification with a recovery habit. Leave filtering enabled, but review voicemail, recent calls, and the filtered-message folders periodically. Legitimate first-time callers, delivery services, schools, clinics, and two-factor-code senders can otherwise be overlooked.

Turn on spam call protection on Android

Enable caller identification

  1. Open the Phone app. Use Google’s Phone app if your device has more than one calling app.
  2. Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then tap Settings.
  3. Tap Caller ID and spam.
  4. Turn on See caller ID & spam.

This setting lets the Phone app identify businesses and warn you when a call may be spam. It does not necessarily block every suspected caller; the label is a prompt to decide whether to answer.

Automatically filter suspected spam calls

  1. Return to Phone > More options (⋮) > Settings > Caller ID and spam.
  2. Turn on Filter spam calls, if the option appears.

Google says a filtered call remains in your call history, but you do not receive a missed-call notification or a voicemail notification for it. Check Recents and voicemail regularly, especially when you are expecting an important call. A filtered call may still leave a voicemail even though the phone did not ring.

Keep Android’s protection current

Install Android updates and update the Google Phone app through your device’s app store. Google identifies current software as a way to receive the latest spam-protection features. If the menu or switch is missing, the limitation may be tied to your phone model, Android version, carrier, country, or the version of the Phone app rather than a fault with the handset.

Use Google Messages for SMS and RCS

Android text controls depend on the messaging app that handles your messages. If your phone uses a manufacturer’s messaging app, its labels and capabilities can differ. Google’s documented spam controls apply to Google Messages, so set it as the default SMS app if you want those controls.

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Open the app’s profile icon or three-dot menu and choose Messages settings (the exact label can vary by release).
  3. Open the section for Spam protection or the equivalent safety setting.
  4. Enable the available protection, then use the conversation-level options to Block or Report spam when a suspicious message arrives.

Google Messages can identify suspicious messages and provide actions to block or report them. The precise menu wording is not identical on every Android phone or app release. If you cannot find the control, update Messages, confirm it is the default SMS app, and check the app’s settings search.

Understand the RCS requirement

Google’s documented combination for detecting certain fake calls requires Android 12 or later, the Phone and Contacts apps, Google Messages, and RCS enabled in Messages. This requirement applies to that specific detection combination; ordinary spam identification and blocking options can vary independently. To check RCS, open Google Messages > profile icon > Messages settings > RCS chats and look for a connected status. Carrier support and regional availability can affect whether RCS is offered.

Turn on spam call protection on iPhone

Enable caller identification

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Phone.
  3. Tap Call Blocking & Identification.
  4. Turn on Business Call Identification and any supported call-identification apps listed on that screen.

Apple says identification may come from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, or supported apps. The list shown on your iPhone depends on what is available in your region and what you have installed. Identification labels a call; it does not automatically silence every unknown number.

Screen or silence unknown callers

Open Settings > Apps > Phone and look for the available screening or silencing controls. On supported iOS versions, screening can ask an unknown caller for their name and reason before the iPhone rings. Silencing sends calls from numbers that are not recognized to voicemail instead of ringing the phone. Apple’s exact labels and the availability of each option depend on iOS version and region.

Screening is useful when you want to hear from new contacts but reduce robocalls: a real caller can identify themselves, while many automated systems will not complete the prompt. Silencing is stricter and is better suited to periods when interruptions are unacceptable, provided you routinely check voicemail and the call list.

Turn on spam text protection on iPhone

Filter unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap the Filter button.
  3. Tap Manage Filtering.
  4. Turn on Text Message Filter.

Apple says unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages can be sorted into Transactions and Promotions folders. The filter changes where a message appears; it is not proof that every message placed there is malicious. Open those folders when you are expecting a receipt, appointment notice, delivery update, verification code, or a message from a new contact.

Add a third-party filtering extension

If a supported filtering extension is installed, it can be enabled from the same filtering controls in Messages. Extensions can provide additional classification, but they are separate from Apple’s built-in Text Message Filter. Review the extension’s permissions and privacy terms before enabling it.

Report a message or caller

Use the in-message spam-reporting action when it appears in Messages. Apple also documents an SMS/Call Reporting extension that can be enabled at Settings > Apps > Phone > SMS/Call Reporting (the exact placement can vary with iOS). Reporting and blocking are separate actions: reporting helps classification, while blocking prevents further contact from that sender or number.

Android and iPhone protection compared

Area Android with Google apps iPhone
Call identification Google Phone’s See caller ID & spam labels businesses and suspected spam. Business Call Identification can use Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, and supported apps.
Automatic call handling Filter spam calls can prevent ringing and suppress missed-call and voicemail notifications while retaining the call in history. Available controls can screen an unknown caller or silence unknown calls to voicemail; options depend on iOS version and region.
Text handling Google Messages provides spam identification plus block and report actions; labels vary by release and device. Text Message Filter sorts unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS into Transactions and Promotions; messages can also be reported or blocked.
Privacy consideration Google says call information may be sent to Google to identify a business or determine whether a call is spam. Identification sources and any enabled reporting or filtering extension determine what information is processed; review the relevant settings and permissions.
Compatibility Behavior varies by Android version, phone model, carrier, country, and installed Google apps. Some documented fake-call detection requires Android 12 or later, Phone, Contacts, Google Messages, and RCS. Labels and controls vary by iOS version, region, carrier, and supported identification services.
Where to recover messages and calls Filtered calls remain in call history; check voicemail. Review blocked or spam conversations in Google Messages. Check Recents and voicemail for silenced calls, and open the Transactions and Promotions folders in Messages.

Privacy and data-use trade-offs

Spam detection needs information about a call or message. Google’s support documentation states: “To use caller ID and spam protection, your phone may need to send information about your calls to Google.” It explains that an unknown caller’s number may be sent to Google to identify a business or determine whether the call is spam. You can turn the feature off in the Android Caller ID and spam settings, but doing so removes that layer of identification and filtering.

On iPhone, caller identification can come from Apple Business Connect, a carrier, or a supported app. Enabling an SMS/Call Reporting extension or a third-party message filter gives that service a role in classifying communications. Choose only services you trust, read the permission prompts, and disable an extension if its behavior or data practices are unclear.

How to recover a legitimate call or message

When an Android call was filtered

  1. Open the Phone app and review Recents for the filtered number.
  2. Open voicemail directly rather than relying on a missed-call or voicemail alert.
  3. If the caller is legitimate, return the call using a number you independently trust, such as the organization’s official website or a statement, rather than a number supplied in an unsolicited message.
  4. If filtering is too aggressive, leave See caller ID & spam on but turn off Filter spam calls.

When an iPhone call was silenced

  1. Open Phone > Recents and inspect calls marked as unknown.
  2. Check the Voicemail tab.
  3. For an expected contact, save the number to Contacts or return the call through a verified channel.
  4. If you need unknown calls to ring again, return to Settings > Apps > Phone and disable the silencing control while keeping identification enabled.

When a text was filtered

  1. On iPhone, open Messages > Filter and inspect Transactions and Promotions.
  2. On Android, open Google Messages’ spam or blocked area and review the conversation before unblocking it.
  3. Do not tap links or share passwords, payment details, or verification codes until you have confirmed the sender independently.
  4. Mark a false positive as not spam, if that action is offered, and save the sender when appropriate.

Troubleshoot missing or ineffective spam controls

The Android switches are not present

  • Confirm you opened the Google Phone app, not a different dialer.
  • Update Android and the Phone app.
  • Check whether your carrier or country supports the feature.
  • Set Google Messages as the default SMS app if you need its spam controls.
  • Remember that manufacturers can rename, relocate, or omit Google features.

Spam calls still ring

  • Make sure Filter spam calls, rather than only See caller ID & spam, is enabled on Android.
  • On iPhone, identification alone does not silence calls; enable screening or silencing separately.
  • Some callers change numbers frequently or are not yet classified, so no built-in filter can promise complete detection.
  • Review blocked numbers and caller-identification permissions if a known nuisance repeatedly gets through.

Important messages are being hidden

  • Review filtered folders and spam areas on a schedule.
  • Save recurring contacts and use verified channels for organizations that need to reach you.
  • On Android, consider disabling automatic call filtering while retaining caller identification if missed notifications are a problem.
  • On iPhone, use screening instead of full silencing when you need unknown callers to have a chance to identify themselves.

RCS or fake-call detection does not work

  • Check that the phone runs Android 12 or later.
  • Verify that Phone, Contacts, and Google Messages are installed and current.
  • Confirm RCS is enabled and connected in Google Messages.
  • Carrier, country, and account support can prevent the feature from appearing even when the software is current.

A practical setup checklist

  • Turn on caller identification before enabling the more aggressive filtering option.
  • Choose automatic filtering or silencing only after deciding how often you will check voicemail and recent calls.
  • Enable text filtering, then inspect the filtered folders during the first week for false positives.
  • Use block and report actions for repeated spam instead of replying.
  • Keep the operating system, Phone app, and Messages app updated.
  • Review privacy disclosures before enabling a carrier, app, or reporting extension.
  • Never treat a caller-ID label or message classification as proof of identity; independently verify requests for money, passwords, or security codes.
