The correct method depends on which Outlook you use. In classic Outlook for Windows (Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016), turn on the automatic pre-send check at File > Options > Mail, then select Always check spelling before sending under Compose messages. In new Outlook for Windows and Outlook on the web or Outlook.com, Microsoft’s documented workflow is different: open Editor while composing and review its spelling suggestions. The classic checkbox is not a universal setting across every Outlook interface.
First identify your Outlook version
Outlook has two different spell-check workflows. Classic Outlook for Windows includes a setting that runs a spelling check when you select Send. New Outlook for Windows and browser-based Outlook use Editor during composition instead of the classic pre-send checkbox.

| Outlook version | Where to start | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Outlook for Windows 2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016 | File > Options > Mail | Enable Always check spelling before sending. Selecting Send starts a spelling check automatically. |
| New Outlook for Windows | Editor on the Message tab, or the ribbon overflow menu | Editor displays spelling, grammar, and style suggestions while you compose. The classic checkbox is not the documented workflow. |
| Outlook on the web or Outlook.com | Editor on the Message tab, or the overflow menu | Review suggestions in the Editor pane or directly in the message body. |
If you cannot find one of these controls, do not keep looking for a setting that belongs to another edition. The ribbon and menu layout can vary, and Microsoft directs users whose new-Outlook steps do not match to the classic-Outlook instructions instead.
Turn on automatic checking in classic Outlook for Windows
These steps apply to the classic desktop editions named by Microsoft: Outlook 2024, Outlook 2021, Outlook 2019, and Outlook 2016.

- Open Outlook and select File in the upper-left corner.
- Select Options.
- In the Outlook Options window, select Mail.
- Find the Compose messages section.
- Check Always check spelling before sending.
- Select OK if the dialog presents that button, then return to your message.
The setting applies when you select Send from a message composed in that classic desktop application. It is an Outlook option rather than a formatting choice for one isolated paragraph.
What you will see when you select Send
With the option enabled, Outlook checks the message as you send it. If Outlook finds spelling mistakes, the spelling-check process gives you a chance to review them before the message leaves the Outbox workflow. If Outlook finds no spelling mistakes, it sends the message immediately.
This behavior is different from an underline that you notice while typing. The automatic setting creates a check at the point of sending, so it is useful when you want a final spelling checkpoint even if you did not open a proofing tool during composition.

Return to the draft instead of completing the check
If the check opens and you decide that you need to edit the message, Microsoft’s instruction is specific: select Cancel, then select No. That sequence returns you to editing rather than allowing the current check to finish and send the message.
After correcting the draft, select Send again. The same automatic setting remains in force, so Outlook can check the revised message before sending it.
Run a manual check in classic Outlook
Some classic Outlook versions do not include Editor. For a one-time review, open the message and use Review > Spelling & Grammar. This manual command is also a fallback when the automatic option is unavailable or when you want to check a draft before you are ready to send it.

New Outlook for Windows does not use the classic desktop checkbox as its documented spell-check workflow. Instead, check the message with Editor while the draft is open.
- Start a new message or open a draft.
- On the message ribbon, select Editor. Microsoft describes it on the Message tab in the Proofing group.
- If Editor is not visible on the ribbon, open the ribbon’s overflow menu and choose it there. The exact location depends on the ribbon layout.
- Review the suggestions in the Editor pane or the markings that appear in the message body.
- Apply, ignore, or otherwise review the spelling suggestions before selecting Send.
Editor can surface spelling, grammar, and style issues together. That means it is a composition-time review rather than a single-purpose “spell-check before send” switch. If you only want to correct spelling, concentrate on the spelling suggestions and leave other categories unchanged.

Change which Editor suggestions appear
- Open Editor in the draft.
- Select Editor Settings.
- Turn the available suggestion types on or off according to the level of review you want.
- Select OK.
These controls change what Editor presents while you compose. They do not create the classic Always check spelling before sending checkbox in new Outlook.
Set the proofing language for a draft
- Open Editor Settings from the composition window.
- Select Manage spellcheck languages.
- Choose the language you need for that message.
In new Outlook, a proofing-language choice made while composing applies only to that specific email draft. It should not be treated as a permanent language change for every future message. If the next draft uses a different language, make the selection again in that draft’s Editor workflow.

Check spelling in Outlook on the web or Outlook.com
Browser-based Outlook uses the same general Editor approach rather than the classic desktop checkbox.
Best Value
- Open Outlook on the web or Outlook.com and create a message or open a draft.
- Select Editor on the Message tab.
- If the command is hidden, open the ribbon overflow menu and select Editor there.
- Review the suggestions in the Editor pane or in the message body.
- Correct the spelling issues you want to fix, then send the message.
The interface may place Editor differently depending on the current ribbon layout. The important distinction is that you open Editor during composition; you should not expect the classic Windows path File > Options > Mail to provide a universal pre-send checkbox in the browser.
Adjust Editor suggestions and language on the web
From the composition workflow, open Editor Settings to change which suggestion types appear. The same settings area provides Manage spellcheck languages when you need a different proofing language. As with new Outlook, a language choice made while composing applies to that particular draft.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when the instructions do not match your screen
Menu differences usually indicate that you are following instructions for a different Outlook edition, not that spell checking has been removed.
- You see File > Options: You are likely in classic Outlook for Windows. Open File > Options > Mail and look under Compose messages for the checkbox.
- You see an Editor command on the Message tab: You are likely using new Outlook or a web interface. Open Editor in the draft instead of searching for the classic checkbox.
- Editor is not on the Message tab: Open the ribbon overflow menu. Microsoft notes that the command’s placement varies with ribbon layout.
- The new-Outlook steps do not work: Microsoft says to use the classic-Outlook instructions if those steps do not match your application. Check whether the window offers File > Options.
- Your classic version has no Editor: Use Review > Spelling & Grammar for a manual check. Some classic versions do not include Editor.
- The message sends without a final check: Confirm that you enabled Always check spelling before sending in classic Outlook. In new Outlook and on the web, open Editor and review the draft before sending; the classic checkbox is not the documented control there.
Choose the workflow that fits how you write
| Your situation | Best workflow | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You use classic Outlook and want a final checkpoint every time you select Send. | Enable Always check spelling before sending. | The check is attached to the Send action and runs automatically. |
| You use classic Outlook but want to review a draft before it is ready to send. | Use Review > Spelling & Grammar. | You control when the check starts. |
| You use new Outlook and want spelling, grammar, or style feedback while writing. | Open Editor on the Message tab or from the overflow menu. | Editor presents those suggestion categories during composition. |
| You use Outlook on the web or Outlook.com. | Open Editor in the draft, then review the pane or body markings. | The browser workflow is based on Editor rather than the classic options dialog. |
| You write in more than one language. | Use Editor Settings > Manage spellcheck languages in the current draft. | In new Outlook and web Outlook, the selected proofing language applies to that draft only. |
A reliable pre-send routine
Regardless of edition, a short routine prevents the most common mistake: assuming that a control from one Outlook interface exists in another.
Quick Recap
- Identify the interface. Look for File > Options (classic) or Editor on the message ribbon (new or web).
- Use the matching check. In classic Outlook, enable the automatic checkbox or run Review > Spelling & Grammar. In new or web Outlook, open Editor.
- Confirm the proofing language when needed. Use Manage spellcheck languages from Editor Settings for the current draft.
- Read the corrected sentence once. A spelling suggestion can change a word without confirming that the resulting sentence says what you intend.
- Send only after the review is complete. In classic Outlook, if the automatic check opens and you need more editing, choose Cancel and then No to return to the draft.
Important limits of the setting
- The automatic pre-send checkbox is documented for classic Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016; do not describe it as a setting shared by every Outlook product.
- Editor’s location can change with the ribbon layout, so the Message tab is not the only place to look in new Outlook or on the web.
- A proofing-language choice made during composition in new Outlook or web Outlook applies to that email draft, not automatically to later drafts.
- Some classic Outlook versions may not provide Editor. The manual Review > Spelling & Grammar command remains the available checking route in those versions.
- A spelling check is not a substitute for reading the complete message, especially when a correctly spelled word is still the wrong word for the sentence.
Quick reference
| Edition | Exact path or command | Checking point |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, 2016 | File > Options > Mail > Compose messages > Always check spelling before sending | When you select Send |
| Classic Outlook without Editor | Review > Spelling & Grammar | When you start the manual check |
| New Outlook for Windows | Message > Editor, or the ribbon overflow menu | While composing |
| Outlook on the web or Outlook.com | Message > Editor, or the overflow menu | While composing |
