The control appears only when Google makes the feature available on that device, and it may already be enabled automatically.
Spam protection is not a blanket switch that blocks every number missing from your contacts. It identifies suspected spam, can prevent those messages from arriving in your inbox, and places filtered conversations in Spam & blocked. For a specific sender, blocking or reporting the conversation is the dependable action. Google Messages also has a Known and Unknown inbox filter, while its separate Hide international messages control is currently documented only for devices using a Singapore SIM card.

Turn on spam protection in Google Messages
Use this path on an Android phone running the current Google Messages app:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or initials in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Messages settings.
- Open Protection & Safety.
- Tap Spam protection.
- Turn on Enable spam protection.
If you do not see Spam protection, Google says the item is shown only when the feature is available on that device. The menu can therefore differ by phone, software build, account state, or staged availability. It is also possible that protection is already active: Google says it can turn the feature on automatically and notify you when that happens. In that case, the same control lets you turn it off.

What spam protection actually does
Google Messages’ classifier looks for signs that a conversation is unwanted or deceptive. When it detects suspected spam, it can stop the message from being delivered to the normal inbox and hide the conversation in Spam & blocked. Filtering is not a promise that every unwanted text will be caught, nor does it mean that every message from an unfamiliar number is spam.
Filtering versus blocking
| Control | Scope | Typical result | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spam protection | Messages Google’s classifier considers suspected spam | May prevent delivery and move the conversation to Spam & blocked | Shown only where Google has made the feature available; may be enabled automatically |
| Known and Unknown filter | Inbox organization by whether a sender is saved in Contacts | Lets you view known and unsaved senders separately; it does not itself block messages | Available from the inbox search/filter interface on supported app versions |
| Block | One selected conversation or sender | Stops future messages from that sender and keeps the thread out of the normal inbox | Per-conversation action |
| Report spam | One selected conversation or sender | Reports the thread, blocks the sender, and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked | Per-conversation action |
| Hide international messages | International numbers that are not in Contacts | Moves matching messages to Spam & blocked | Google currently documents this for devices with a Singapore SIM card |
The key distinction is scope. Spam protection covers suspected spam across conversations, whereas blocking and reporting are intentional actions against a particular thread. The Known and Unknown filter helps you find unsaved senders but is not an unknown-number firewall.
How to screen messages from numbers not in your contacts
Use the Known and Unknown inbox filter
In the Google Messages inbox, tap the search box and use the available sender filter to view Known or Unknown conversations. “Unknown” means the sender is not saved in your Contacts; it does not mean Google has judged the message malicious. A delivery notification, appointment reminder, verification code, or message from a new acquaintance can all appear in the unknown view.

Block an individual sender
- In the conversation list, touch and hold the conversation you want to stop.
- Tap Block.
- Confirm the action when Google Messages asks.
Blocking is the right choice when you recognize a sender but do not want further messages. It is narrower than reporting and does not claim that the sender’s content is spam.
Report spam and block the sender
- Touch and hold the unwanted conversation.
- Choose Block or the available Report spam option.
- Confirm the report.
Reporting as spam also blocks the sender and moves the thread to Spam & blocked. Use it for unsolicited advertising, scam attempts, phishing links, or other messages that should help improve Google’s filtering signals. Do not report a legitimate conversation merely because the number is unfamiliar.
Find the Spam & blocked folder
Messages caught by the classifier, or conversations you blocked or reported, are kept in Spam & blocked rather than the regular Home screen. Open Google Messages and use the app’s profile or account menu to locate Spam & blocked; the exact placement can vary with the app version and phone interface. If you cannot find the folder, use the inbox search or the conversation actions menu and look for the same label.
Review this folder before deleting anything when an expected text has not arrived. One-time passcodes, delivery updates, appointment reminders, and messages from a new number can be misclassified.

Restore a legitimate message that was filtered
- Open Spam & blocked.
- Open the conversation that should be delivered normally.
- Use the available Unblock, Move to inbox, or Not spam action.
- Confirm the change if prompted.
Google says unblocking removes the spam report and returns the conversation to the Home screen. When you mark a conversation as not spam, Google receives information about the removed flag to improve classification. If the sender is legitimate and likely to contact you again, save the number in Contacts and keep an eye on the conversation after restoring it.
Hide international messages (Singapore-SIM limitation)
Some supported devices expose a dedicated control for international texts. The documented path is Profile picture or initials > Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Hide international messages. Google currently says this option works only with a Singapore SIM card. When available, it moves messages from international numbers that are not in your Contacts to Spam & blocked.
Because this is region-limited, do not expect to see the setting on a phone using a SIM from another country. If the option is absent, use the general spam classifier, the Known and Unknown filter, and per-sender blocking or reporting instead.

Why unknown messages can still get through
Spam protection is probabilistic
The classifier identifies suspected spam rather than applying a simple rule such as “reject every number not in Contacts.” A genuine message can come from an unsaved number, and an abusive sender can change numbers or wording. Some unwanted messages will therefore reach the inbox even with protection enabled.

Unknown does not mean spam
The Known and Unknown filter is based on your Contacts list. It does not evaluate intent, identity, or safety. A message can be unknown but legitimate, or known but compromised. Treat the filter as an organizational aid, not a security verdict.
Feature availability differs by device
Google only displays the Spam protection item when it is available on the device. International-message hiding is more narrowly restricted, and newer scam-screening functions are being rolled out in stages. Missing menu items do not necessarily indicate that the app is broken.
Messages may use different delivery paths
Spam protection covers messages handled by Google Messages, but carrier behavior, device software, and the sender’s delivery method can affect what you see. RCS and SMS/MMS conversations can also present different indicators and controls in the app.
How Google Messages detects suspected spam
Google describes a combination of machine-learning models that run on the device and URL checking when a message contains a link. Device-side detection can operate without a data connection, so a phone may identify some suspicious content even when it is offline. Link checking adds another signal for messages that direct you to a website.
Best Value
Detection is designed to reduce unwanted delivery, not to certify that every remaining message is safe. Avoid opening links, downloading attachments, or sharing passwords and verification codes simply because a message reached the inbox.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Privacy and data handling
Google says spam information may be sent anonymously to improve protection. It also says that unencrypted message contents may be processed ephemerally for spam detection. “Ephemerally” means the processing is temporary for that detection purpose; it is not a claim that all message content is permanently stored for spam analysis.
RCS chats between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted when RCS is enabled. That encryption applies to the RCS conversation, while spam-detection behavior and other message types can involve different processing. If privacy is a deciding factor, check whether a conversation is using RCS and review the protection controls shown on your device rather than assuming every message follows the same path.

Enhanced protection and scam detection
On October 14, 2026, Google announced an opt-in Enhanced protection mode for Google Messages. Google described it as adding Scam Detection for conversations with unknown senders, using on-device detection plus analysis through Private AI Compute. The company said the mode would roll out in the coming weeks.
Because the rollout is staged, the Enhanced protection or Scam Detection control may not yet appear on your phone. Check the current Protection & Safety section before relying on it. Its presence, label, and behavior can vary during the rollout; do not treat the announcement as a guarantee that every Android device already has the setting.
Quick Recap
A practical setup for fewer unwanted texts
- Confirm that Google Messages is your default SMS app and open its settings.
- Enable Spam protection under Protection & Safety when the control is available.
- Use the inbox’s Known and Unknown filter to review unsaved senders without blocking all of them.
- Report obvious scams and unsolicited advertising; use Block for a sender you simply do not want to hear from.
- Check Spam & blocked whenever an expected text is missing.
- Restore legitimate conversations with Not spam, Unblock, or Move to inbox, then save trusted numbers to Contacts.
- If your phone uses a Singapore SIM and shows Hide international messages, enable it only if moving non-contact international texts to spam matches your needs.
- Look for Enhanced protection as Google’s staged scam-screening rollout reaches your device.
Troubleshooting checklist
The Spam protection option is missing
- Verify that you opened Messages settings inside Google Messages, not the Android system Settings app.
- Open Protection & Safety and check again; Google only shows the item where the feature is available.
- Install available updates for Google Messages and Android, then reopen the app.
- If the setting remains absent, use blocking, reporting, and the Known and Unknown filter while waiting for availability on that device.
Messages from unknown numbers still appear
- Confirm that Enable spam protection is on.
- Remember that spam protection is not a block-all-unknown-senders rule.
- Use the Known and Unknown filter to isolate unsaved senders.
- Block or report repeat offenders individually.
- Check whether the phone supports Hide international messages; Google currently limits that feature to Singapore-SIM devices.
A legitimate text disappeared
- Open Spam & blocked and search for the conversation.
- Use Not spam, Unblock, or Move to inbox as offered.
- Save the sender in Contacts and ask the sender to resend if necessary.
- For time-sensitive codes, request a new code only after checking that the original thread was not filtered.
A suspicious message reached the inbox
- Do not tap links, open attachments, or disclose credentials.
- Touch and hold the conversation and choose Report spam to block it and move it to Spam & blocked.
- Delete the conversation only after reporting if you want Google’s spam signal associated with it.
Which control should you use?
| Your situation | Best action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want broad automatic filtering | Enable Spam protection | It evaluates suspected spam and can hide it before it reaches the inbox. |
| You are looking for a message from a new contact | Open the Unknown view and check Spam & blocked | Unknown status is organizational, while the spam folder catches classifier decisions. |
| One sender keeps contacting you | Block the conversation | It is a targeted, per-sender action. |
| A message is clearly fraudulent or unsolicited | Report spam | Reporting also blocks the sender and moves the thread to spam. |
| You receive unwanted international texts and use a Singapore SIM | Consider Hide international messages | It moves international numbers not in Contacts to spam on supported devices. |
| You see the new scam-screening option | Review and opt in to Enhanced protection if its warnings suit your needs | Google announced staged availability, with on-device detection and Private AI Compute analysis for unknown-sender conversations. |
Important limits to remember
- There is no universal Google-documented switch that blocks every sender who is not in Contacts.
- Spam classification can make mistakes, so check Spam & blocked when an expected message is missing.
- Menu names and availability can change with device support, app version, region, and staged rollouts.
- Hide international messages is currently documented for Singapore-SIM devices, not as a worldwide setting.
- Enhanced protection was announced for a rollout beginning after October 14, 2026; its presence should be verified on the individual device.
- RCS end-to-end encryption applies to RCS chats between Google Messages users when RCS is enabled; it should not be generalized to every SMS, MMS, or detection process.
