To turn on subtitles in Netflix, start the show or movie, open the playback controls, choose Audio & Subtitles (or the language controls shown on your device), and select a language. To change how subtitles look, use Netflix’s profile-level Subtitle appearance page in a web browser, or the more limited in-player settings on a compatible TV. Android offers a separate in-app appearance menu whose changes apply only on that Android device.
The exact controls and available languages vary by title, device, language and, in some cases, country. Netflix documents the current labels and exceptions in its subtitle and audio-language guide and its subtitle-appearance guide.

Turn on subtitles while a title is playing
Netflix exposes subtitle selection from the player, not from the general account settings. Open a title first, then reveal the playback controls using the input method for your device.

- Open Netflix and start the show or movie.

- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Choose a listed subtitle or caption language. If the interface offers Other, open it to see additional tracks, then make your selection.

Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, cable boxes, game systems and streaming players
- Start playback.
- Press the up or down arrow on the remote or controller to open the player controls. The exact button can differ by manufacturer, but Netflix’s documented method for most of these devices is an up or down press.
- Choose Audio & Subtitles. Some television interfaces show the language choices along the bottom of the screen without an Audio & Subtitles icon.
- Select the subtitle or caption language you want.
If pressing up or down does not reveal a control bar, try the device’s equivalent select or pause action and then look for the language row. The labels are supplied by the Netflix app on that device, so they may not be identical across television brands.
Apple TV
- Begin playing the title.
- Swipe up on the Apple TV remote touch surface, or press the up arrow.
- Open the audio and subtitle controls and select the desired language.
How Netflix decides which languages appear
The menu is title-specific. Netflix lists only the subtitle, caption and audio tracks supplied for the particular show, movie, season or episode and for your playback context. A language available for one title is not proof that the same language exists for another. If a language is absent, there is no setting that can add a track Netflix has not provided.
Understand subtitles, captions and SDH tracks
Netflix uses subtitles for translated or transcribed dialogue and may label a more descriptive track as SDH (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing). SDH can include non-dialogue information such as relevant sounds or speaker identification when that track is produced for the title.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Foreign-language dialogue can trigger subtitles
Netflix notes that dialogue in a language other than the title’s original language can cause subtitles to appear even when your subtitle setting is off. This behavior is tied to the program’s dialogue and localization choices, rather than a permanent profile preference. If subtitles appear only during those scenes, check the title’s audio and subtitle menu before changing your profile appearance.
SDH may differ by season or episode
Look for an SDH badge on the title’s details page when you need that format. Netflix says SDH availability can vary by title, season or individual episode, so a series may offer SDH for some installments but not others. If the badge or track is missing for one episode, check another episode before assuming the app is malfunctioning.

Customize subtitle appearance in a web browser
The browser route provides Netflix’s broadest documented set of appearance controls. It changes the subtitle appearance for the selected profile, rather than only for one title.
- Open your Netflix Account page in a web browser.
- Under Profiles, choose the profile you use for viewing.
- Select Subtitle appearance.
- Adjust the available font, size, shadow and background color options.
- Select Save.
- Open Netflix on the device where you watch. On a TV or streaming player, reload the Netflix app if the new style does not appear immediately.
These controls affect the selected profile. Choosing a different profile on the same television can therefore show a different subtitle style. The browser page is also the place to make the most complete combination of font, size, shadow and background choices; connected-TV menus generally expose fewer options.
What the browser controls mean
- Font: Select one of the typefaces Netflix makes available in the profile editor.
- Size: Increase or decrease the text scale. If text remains unexpectedly large, check the device accessibility setting as well as this Netflix value.
- Shadow: Change the edge or shadow treatment that separates characters from the picture.
- Background color: Add or alter the field behind the text when the available option supports it.
Netflix may not display every combination on every device. Older hardware can fail to render a chosen setting, and a television app can omit options that are visible in the browser editor.
Change appearance from a TV or streaming device
Some connected-TV interfaces let you make a quick adjustment while the title is paused. This is separate from the full browser editor and is available only when the device and language support it.
- Start the title and pause playback.
- Open the player controls.
- Select Settings.
- Adjust Size and Style if those controls are offered.
- Resume playback to check the result.
If Settings does not appear, Netflix says that the device does not support changing appearance for that language. Do not assume that a missing menu is hidden elsewhere: connected TVs offer fewer appearance choices than a browser, and support can vary by language as well as by device.

Change appearance in the Netflix Android app
On an Android phone or tablet, Netflix provides an in-app path rather than requiring a browser.
- Open the Netflix app and tap My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name at the top.
- Choose Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to edit.
- Tap Subtitle Appearance.
- Make the available changes. Android saves them automatically.
To return to Netflix’s default styling, open the same page and tap Restore Default Settings. Netflix specifies that Android appearance changes apply only to titles played on that Android device. They should not be treated as a universal replacement for the browser profile setting on televisions, computers or other mobile platforms.
Apple devices: select tracks normally, use Apple’s appearance instructions
Netflix’s subtitle-selection controls are available during playback on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad, using the device-specific gestures described earlier. For changing the visual style itself, Netflix directs users to Apple’s current support instructions for the relevant Apple device. The Netflix help page does not provide a single Apple-specific menu path, so the steps can differ between Apple TV, iPhone and iPad software versions. Use Apple’s instructions for your exact model and operating-system version rather than applying the Android or television path.
Compare the available customization routes
| Route | Where you change it | Scope | Controls documented by Netflix | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Web browser | Account → Profiles → Subtitle appearance | Selected Netflix profile | Font, size, shadow and background color | Some older devices may not display every chosen setting; a TV may need an app reload. |
| TV or streaming device | While a title is paused: player controls → Settings | Appearance supported by that device and language | Size and Style, when offered | Fewer options than a browser; the Settings item may be absent. |
| Android phone or tablet | My Netflix → profile → Manage Profiles → Subtitle Appearance | Titles played on that Android device | Options shown in the app, plus Restore Default Settings | Changes are device-specific rather than a universal profile appearance setting. |
| Apple TV, iPhone or iPad | Track selection in Netflix; appearance follows Apple’s device guidance | Depends on Apple’s supported accessibility or subtitle settings | Netflix provides playback language controls; Apple documents appearance controls | Netflix’s page does not publish one Apple menu path for all models. |
Why a subtitle language or style may be missing
The title does not include that track
Subtitle and audio lists are generated for each title. A language can be available for one season, episode or movie and absent from another. Check the details page and the in-player list for the exact item you are watching.
Your device or language does not support appearance editing
A television can show subtitles while offering no Settings entry for their appearance. Netflix also says that some devices do not support appearance changes for certain languages. In that case, use the browser profile editor if your viewing device can render those settings, or accept the device’s available style.

Country and primary-language restrictions
Netflix says subtitle appearance settings are unavailable in some countries where Arabic or Hebrew are primary languages, even when the Netflix profile itself is set to another language. This is a regional availability rule, not an indication that your account is misconfigured.
Older hardware may ignore selected options
Netflix warns that some older devices may not display all settings selected in the profile editor. If the browser preview or another device reflects your choice but an older player does not, the limitation is likely the player’s implementation rather than the saved profile value.
Kids-profile persistence is different
Netflix says subtitle and audio preferences are not saved when most Kids titles are watched from an adult profile. The preferences are saved when titles are watched from a Kids profile. If a setting seems to reset during children’s programming, check which profile is active before changing the appearance again.

Smart TV or streaming device: reload Netflix
- Return to the Netflix home screen.
- Open Get Help.
- Select Reload (shown as Reload Netflix on some interfaces).
- Open the title again and test the subtitle style.
Netflix recommends this reload when a saved browser appearance change has not reached a smart-TV app.
Android: switch profiles and switch back
If an Android appearance change does not apply, Netflix recommends switching to another profile and then returning to the original profile. Reopen the title and check the subtitles after the profile switch.

Other devices
For devices that still ignore the saved appearance after the supported steps, Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance says it is investigating and asks users to contact Netflix support. Report the device model, app behavior and the exact profile setting that fails so support can distinguish a rendering limitation from an account issue.
Subtitles are much too large
Netflix says both its own subtitle-size setting and the device’s accessibility setting can enlarge subtitles. Check the browser or Android Netflix setting first, then inspect the television, phone, tablet or operating system accessibility menu. Reducing a device-level text or caption size can change subtitles in every app on that device, not just Netflix. The dedicated Netflix guidance is at Subtitles are too large.
Appearance still does not change after a reload
Confirm that you edited the profile currently selected on the viewing device, saved the browser changes, and selected a subtitle track that the title actually provides. Then test a different title. If one title changes and another does not, the difference is probably title- or language-specific; if no title changes on a supported device, follow Netflix’s troubleshooting page at Subtitle and caption appearance doesn’t change.

A reliable setup workflow for readable subtitles
- Choose the track first. Start the title and select the required language or SDH track from Audio & Subtitles. This confirms that the issue is not simply a missing subtitle option.
- Use the browser editor for the widest control. Set the profile’s font, size, shadow and background color, then save.
- Refresh the destination device. Reload the Netflix app on a television or streaming player; on Android, reopen the title after saving the in-app setting.
- Check the picture, not just the menu. Pause on a bright scene and a dark scene to verify that the selected style remains legible against both backgrounds.
- Check device accessibility if sizing looks wrong. A device-level caption or text enlargement can override your expectations and affects other apps too.
- Keep profile boundaries in mind. A browser edit belongs to the chosen profile, while Android’s documented appearance edit is limited to that Android device.
Quick checklist
- Start playback before looking for subtitle controls.
- Tap or click on phones, tablets and computers; press up or down on most TV-connected devices; swipe up or press up on Apple TV.
- Open Audio & Subtitles, or use the language row shown at the bottom of some TV screens.
- Choose a track that is listed for the specific title, season and episode.
- For maximum appearance control, use Account → Profiles → Subtitle appearance in a browser.
- On a compatible TV, look for player controls → Settings while paused; expect only Size and Style when those controls exist.
- On Android, use My Netflix → profile → Manage Profiles → Subtitle Appearance; changes apply only on that Android device.
- Reload a smart-TV app after browser changes, and switch profiles away and back on Android if the style does not update.
- Check both Netflix and device accessibility settings when subtitles are too large.
- Remember that country, language, device age, title availability and Kids-profile behavior can limit what persists or appears.
For the complete device and language rules, consult Netflix’s current subtitle and audio-language instructions and appearance instructions before troubleshooting a setting that your player may not support.
