For the strongest practical Firefox setup on Windows, select Strict Enhanced Tracking Protection, keep Total Cookie Protection enabled, turn on HTTPS-Only mode and DNS over HTTPS, disable optional data collection, and use narrowly scoped site exceptions when a legitimate feature breaks.
What “strongest privacy” means in Firefox
Firefox does not have one master switch that makes browsing anonymous. Its privacy controls protect different parts of a connection: trackers and fingerprinting scripts in pages, cookies set by embedded services, the encryption of web traffic, and the privacy of DNS lookups. The strongest practical configuration combines those controls rather than relying on any single option.

Strict Enhanced Tracking Protection is Mozilla’s strongest one-click global preset. In Strict mode, Firefox blocks known social-media trackers, all cross-site cookies, tracking content in all windows, cryptominers and fingerprinters. Blocking is broader than in the balanced Standard profile, so some sites may need a carefully limited exception.
Strict mode still does not hide every fact about your browsing. A website you visit can see your request, your account can identify you when you sign in, and a DNS-over-HTTPS provider can process the lookups Firefox sends to it. The goal is to reduce unnecessary tracking and passive observation while keeping normal browsing usable.

Open Firefox’s privacy controls on Windows
- Open Firefox.
- Click the menu button with three horizontal lines in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security in the left-hand navigation.
Mozilla places Enhanced Tracking Protection, cookie controls, HTTPS-Only mode, DNS over HTTPS, security warnings and data-collection choices in this panel. Make changes from top to bottom so that you can test a site after each major category rather than changing everything and trying to diagnose several simultaneous failures.
Choose Strict Enhanced Tracking Protection
- In Privacy & Security, find Enhanced Tracking Protection.
- Select Strict.
- If Firefox asks you to reload open tabs, reload them. Existing pages may otherwise continue running with the previous protection state until they are refreshed.
Strict blocks all cross-site (third-party) cookies, tracking content in every window, known social-media trackers, cryptominers and fingerprinters. “Cross-site” means a service loaded inside another site cannot use the same cookie as freely across unrelated sites. Tracking-content blocking can also prevent advertising or analytics scripts from loading when Firefox classifies them as trackers.
Standard, Strict and Custom compared
| Profile | Tracker and cookie coverage | Tracking content in normal windows | Compatibility impact | Per-site tuning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Balanced protection with Total Cookie Protection enabled by default; fewer resources are blocked than in Strict. | Some tracking content can load when it is needed for ordinary site operation. | Lowest likelihood of a broken login, video player or embedded widget. | Usually little tuning is needed. |
| Strict | Blocks known social-media trackers, all cross-site cookies, tracking content in all windows, cryptominers and fingerprinters. | Blocked broadly in normal and private windows. | Higher chance that a site feature, payment hand-off or login popup needs an exception. | Use the shield control for individual sites instead of weakening Firefox globally. |
| Custom | Lets you choose individual protection categories. Removing WebCompat exceptions can make blocking stricter than the preset. | Depends on the categories and exception choices you make. | Potentially highest; Mozilla warns that removing compatibility exceptions can stop video playback or login popups. | Requires the most testing and maintenance. |
Strict is the best starting point for most readers who ask for the strongest setting. Custom is appropriate only when you understand which category you are changing and have a reason to accept the resulting breakage.

Leave Total Cookie Protection turned on. Mozilla says it is enabled by default for all Firefox users worldwide. It creates a separate cookie jar for each site, so an embedded third party cannot use one shared cookie to recognize you as you move between unrelated sites.
Total Cookie Protection is different from simply deleting cookies on exit. Deletion removes stored data later; partitioning limits how a cookie can be used while you browse. A sign-in on one site can continue to work without giving an embedded advertising or social service the same cross-site view of your activity.

Do not disable this feature to solve a problem before testing a site-specific exception. If a payment provider, identity service or embedded application genuinely requires cross-site state, grant access only where needed and reload the page.
Force encrypted connections with HTTPS-Only mode
- Stay in Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to HTTPS-Only Mode.
- Enable HTTPS-Only mode for all windows, if that option is offered.
- When Firefox warns that a site is unavailable over HTTPS, use an exception only after confirming that the site is trusted and has a real technical reason for requiring unencrypted HTTP.
HTTPS-Only mode forces connections to websites to use HTTPS. That prevents a downgrade from an encrypted connection to ordinary HTTP, where traffic can be read or modified by a network attacker. It cannot repair a site that has no HTTPS service, and it does not make an already compromised website safe.

Keep exceptions rare and review them periodically. An old exception can outlive the reason it was created, especially for a small device-management page or an internal service that later gains HTTPS.
Turn on DNS over HTTPS
- In Privacy & Security, locate DNS over HTTPS.
- Enable it.
- Choose the strongest protection mode that works with your network and Firefox’s available resolver choices.
- Apply the change, then test ordinary browsing and any services that depend on local network names.
Before Firefox connects to a domain, it normally needs a DNS lookup to translate that name into an address. DNS over HTTPS (DoH) encrypts the lookup between Firefox and its selected resolver, reducing exposure of the domains you request to people monitoring the local network, such as a public Wi-Fi operator.
DoH is not complete anonymity. The resolver receives the encrypted request after Firefox sends it, the destination website can still see your connection, and other traffic characteristics can reveal activity. DoH also may not suit every managed network: an employer, school or family service may use DNS filtering, internal names or policy controls that depend on the network’s resolver.

If a work portal, printer interface or parental-control system stops resolving after you enable DoH, choose a less restrictive mode that honors the network’s resolver or turn DoH off for that managed environment. This is a network-compatibility decision, not a reason to disable HTTPS-Only mode or Strict tracking protection everywhere.

Review cookies and create narrow exceptions
Scroll to Cookies and Site Data and keep cross-site cookies blocked or isolated. Strict protection can cause a legitimate feature to fail because a service is loaded from a different domain than the page you are viewing.
Use the shield icon for a broken site
- Open the affected site.
- Click the shield icon at the left side of the address bar.
- Use the control to turn Enhanced Tracking Protection off for that site only, if the panel identifies blocking as the cause.
- Reload the page and test the specific feature.
- Turn protection back on when you finish, or remove the exception from the site’s shield panel if it was only needed temporarily.
Typical symptoms include a login loop, an empty embedded checkout, a video that never starts or a sign-in popup that does not open. First try reloading, allowing the required popup, or completing the flow in a new tab. If the shield exception fixes the problem, keep the exception limited to that domain rather than switching Firefox to Standard globally.
Mozilla documents site breakage as a possible consequence of stricter cookie controls. An exception gives one site the compatibility it needs while preserving protection on every other site.
Reduce optional Firefox data collection without disabling security warnings
- In Privacy & Security, find Firefox Data Collection and Use.
- Turn off optional technical or interaction-data sharing where the current Firefox interface presents those choices.
- Leave protections for deceptive content, dangerous downloads and malware enabled.
Optional telemetry and interaction data are separate from the browser’s defenses against phishing, malicious downloads and known malware. Disabling optional collection can reduce data sent for product analysis; disabling deceptive-content or dangerous-download protection removes a security control and is not an equivalent privacy improvement.

The exact checkboxes can change between Firefox releases. Read each label in your installed version and distinguish optional diagnostics from threat-protection services before clearing anything.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Enable privacy signals when available
Firefox may offer privacy signals such as Global Privacy Control or a setting described as telling websites not to sell or share your data. Enable the signal if you want Firefox to communicate that preference automatically.
A signal is a request to participating websites, not a technical barrier. A site that does not recognize the signal can continue its own practices, and a site that recognizes it may apply the request according to the laws and policies that govern it. These signals complement tracker blocking; they do not replace Strict protection, cookie partitioning or HTTPS.
Optional Custom hardening: when it is justified
Most people should stay with Strict and add per-site exceptions. Choose Custom only when a particular threat model warrants a deliberate trade-off. You can adjust protection categories, but every additional block increases the chance that a site will depend on an exception.
Removing WebCompat exceptions
Firefox includes compatibility allowances intended to keep common sites working. Mozilla warns that removing those WebCompat exceptions can stop video playback or login popups. If you remove them, test the sites you rely on immediately and be prepared to restore the compatibility setting rather than creating many broad exceptions.
Best Value
Separate privacy goals from anonymity claims
Custom blocking can reduce tracking scripts and browser fingerprinting signals, but it cannot make an account-based session anonymous. Signing in, uploading identifying content, or granting a site access to location, camera or microphone can still identify you. Use the browser’s permission controls and separate accounts when those distinctions matter.
Test the configuration after changing it
- Open several ordinary sites that you use for reading, work, shopping and media.
- Confirm that the address bar shows HTTPS on sites that support it and that HTTP-only sites trigger an HTTPS-Only warning.
- Test one login, one payment or account hand-off, and one video player. These flows commonly depend on embedded services and reveal whether an exception is needed.
- Open the shield panel on a site that behaves unexpectedly and check which protection category is being applied.
- If the problem is limited to one site, create a site exception and reload. If many unrelated sites fail, review the global profile, DoH mode and any Custom changes instead of adding many exceptions.
- Revisit the settings after a Firefox update because labels, resolver choices and compatibility rules can change.
What this setup does—and does not—protect
- Strict Enhanced Tracking Protection: blocks the categories of trackers and invasive scripts documented by Mozilla, including cross-site cookies, tracking content, cryptominers and fingerprinters.
- Total Cookie Protection: partitions cookies by site so embedded third parties cannot use one shared cookie jar across unrelated sites.
- HTTPS-Only mode: prevents Firefox from quietly using unencrypted HTTP where HTTPS is available.
- DNS over HTTPS: encrypts Firefox’s DNS lookup to its resolver, reducing local-network observation of requested domains.
- Privacy signals: communicate a preference to participating websites but cannot force compliance.
None of these controls prevents a website you intentionally visit from receiving the information required to deliver its service, and none guarantees anonymity from a resolver, an account provider, the destination site or a network with broader monitoring capabilities.
Recommended final configuration
Use Strict Enhanced Tracking Protection, leave Total Cookie Protection enabled, activate HTTPS-Only mode, and enable DNS over HTTPS at the strongest mode compatible with your network. Turn off optional data collection, keep deceptive-content and malware warnings on, and enable available privacy signals. When something breaks, use the shield icon to create a narrow exception and reload; do not weaken the global profile first.
