How do I turn on face capture in Roblox Studio?
- Enable the beta feature: In Roblox Studio, choose File > Beta Features > Face Capture. Roblox’s Animation capture documentation says this beta must be enabled before using face capture.
- Open Clip Editor: Select the Avatar tab in the toolbar and click Clip Editor.
- Create an animation for a rig: Select the rig in the viewport or Explorer, enter an animation name, and create the animation. Its head must be compatible with animation capture.
- Start Face Capture: Click Face Capture in the track list. Review and acknowledge the prompt about collecting facial movements and accessing the camera.
- Record: Choose a camera if needed, then click the red record control in the viewport widget. End the recording with the stop control or let the countdown timer finish. Studio represents the captured facial movement as keyframes on the timeline.
- Edit and export: Adjust the keyframes as needed, save the animation, and export it for use across games.
Get a clearer capture
Roblox recommends a well-lit room, sitting close enough to the camera, and keeping your face centered in frame. Animation Capture – Face supports recordings up to 60 seconds, according to Roblox’s documentation; that is a documented limit, not an independent test result. A built-in webcam is sufficient for the camera step; an external camera is only an option if your computer does not have one.

Does this enable live facial tracking for every Roblox player?
No such universal player-side setting is established by the cited Roblox documentation. The steps above enable a creator workflow in Studio for recording an animation. They should not be treated as a switch that turns on live face tracking in every experience or on every device. For creation of an animated performance, the documented outcome is an editable timeline animation.

A custom avatar head needs facial rigging and animation data; turning on the Studio Face Capture beta does not create those asset components by itself. Roblox describes avatar facial expressions using facial bones and Facial Action Coding System (FACS) data, with FACS values mapped in Studio to a dynamic head’s FaceControls values. Use Avatar Setup to generate and check facial data
Roblox’s Avatar Setup workflow can generate facial FACS poses, rigging, skinning, and animation data. Its Check Face interface lets creators test facial poses and the range of motion of the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth. If the result has artifacts or unexpected facial behavior, Roblox advises adjusting the base mesh and running setup again.
Dynamic heads for avatar chat have specific requirements
Roblox specifies at least 17 FACS poses for dynamic heads intended to support avatar chat. These are asset requirements, not steps for enabling the Face Capture beta:

The documented facial validation actions are a left-eye blink, a right-eye blink, opening the mouth, making a happy expression, and making a sad expression. Consult Roblox’s dynamic head specifications when preparing a head for this use.
