Google Messages has no separate end-to-end-encryption switch. Turn on RCS chats; eligible conversations are upgraded automatically when every participant uses Google Messages with RCS enabled. In the conversation itself, look for the RCS banner and a lock on the compose/send button (and, where shown, beside an encrypted message’s timestamp).
Turn on RCS chats first
Encryption is tied to RCS eligibility, so begin in the Google Messages settings rather than inside an individual conversation. You do not activate encryption by finding a hidden security menu or by installing a separate encryption plug-in.
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Messages settings.
- Tap RCS chats. On some app versions this menu is labeled Chat features.
- Turn on RCS chats.
There is no second encryption control to enable. Once RCS is active, Google Messages handles the encryption upgrade automatically for conversations that meet its requirements. Turning on RCS makes your device eligible; it does not make every message, every contact, or every business thread encrypted.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRead the RCS connection status
Remain in Messages settings > RCS chats and check the status shown for your phone number. This status tells you whether your device can use RCS, not whether a particular conversation is encrypted.
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Connected | RCS is available for chats with other people who have RCS enabled. | Open a conversation and check its encryption indicators. |
| Connecting | Your number is being verified. | Keep an internet connection and make sure the phone can receive the verification SMS. |
| Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry | Number verification has encountered a problem and is waiting to try again. | Use the troubleshooting checks below before changing RCS settings. |
| Not supported | RCS cannot be used in the current device, carrier, or regional setup. | Check device and carrier support; messages may fall back to SMS or MMS. |
A connected status is necessary for your side of an RCS chat, but it is not sufficient for end-to-end encryption. The other person, or every member of a group, must also meet the eligibility requirements.

Check whether one conversation is encrypted
RCS being enabled on your phone does not prove that every thread is protected. Check the specific conversation while composing a message. Google Messages can use different transports in different threads, and a message can fall back to SMS or MMS when RCS is unavailable.
Look for the RCS chat banner
Open the thread and look for the banner identifying it as an RCS chat. This is the first indication that the conversation is using the RCS transport. If the thread is using SMS or MMS instead, it does not have Google Messages’ documented end-to-end encryption.

Check the lock on the compose/send button
Tap the message field and inspect the send control. Google Messages uses a lock to identify an encrypted RCS message. The send control can also indicate whether the message will use mobile data or Wi-Fi, SMS, or MMS, so confirm that the lock is present rather than relying only on the fact that RCS is enabled in settings.
The lock is a conversation-level, send-time check. If you switch between contacts, start a new group, or add a participant, inspect the control again. A thread that was protected earlier can have different eligibility after its participants or transport change.
Check the message timestamp when available
Google’s security guidance also identifies a lock beside the timestamp of an encrypted message. A missing lock is a reason to stop and check the participants, RCS status, and transport before sending sensitive information. Do not infer encryption merely because the message bubble looks the same as another protected message.
Who can use Google Messages end-to-end encryption?
For the encryption behavior documented by Google, every participant in the conversation must use Google Messages and have RCS chats turned on. This applies to both one-to-one and group conversations. In a group, one participant who is not eligible can change the security status of the conversation.
| Conversation type | End-to-end encryption status | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Google Messages to Google Messages, RCS enabled on every device | Eligible for automatic end-to-end encryption. | RCS chat identification and a lock on the compose/send control; an encrypted message may also show a lock beside its timestamp. |
| SMS or MMS | Not end-to-end encrypted in Google Messages. | No encryption lock; the send control identifies SMS or MMS transport. |
| Google Messages RCS chat with an iPhone user | Not end-to-end encrypted under Google’s current FAQ guidance. | Do not treat cross-platform RCS as equivalent to the protected Google Messages-to-Google Messages case. |
| Verified business RCS conversation | Not end-to-end encrypted. Businesses, messaging solution providers, and carriers may access content for delivery and other purposes. | No protected-chat assumption should be made from the business verification badge or RCS branding. |
RCS availability also varies by device, carrier, and region. When RCS is unavailable, Google Messages can still send the message as SMS or MMS; that fallback changes the security properties of the message. The app being installed, a contact being saved, or a conversation carrying an RCS label does not override the lock indicator and participant requirements.

Why SMS and MMS are different
SMS and MMS are older carrier messaging transports. Google’s help explicitly says end-to-end encryption is not available for SMS/MMS messages. If the send control shows SMS or MMS, treat the message as unencrypted even if the same conversation previously used protected RCS.
Cross-platform and business conversations
Google’s current FAQ does not extend this end-to-end-encryption behavior to Google Messages RCS chats with iPhone users. RCS branding alone is therefore not enough. Verified business RCS also has different handling: businesses, messaging solution providers, and carriers manage those conversations and may access content for delivery and other purposes.
Verify the person’s identity (optional)
Encryption and identity verification answer different questions. Encryption protects an eligible conversation in transit between the participants’ devices. Verification lets you compare a security code so you can detect a mismatch in the contact’s public-key identity. Google says encryption remains on if you skip verification.

- Open the individual conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap More.
- Tap Details.
- Tap Verify encryption.
- Call the contact and read the displayed code aloud, then compare both screens.
Use a voice call or another channel you trust for the comparison. Matching codes provide the identity check; they do not turn SMS, MMS, business RCS, or ineligible cross-platform chats into encrypted conversations. If the codes do not match, do not use the thread for sensitive information until you have confirmed who controls the other device.
Verify a participant in a group chat
- Open the group conversation.
- Tap More, then Group details.
- Select the participant you want to check.
- Tap More and choose Verify encryption.
- Compare the code with that person through a trusted call or another channel.
Group verification is performed per participant. Checking one person does not verify everyone else in the group, and it does not remove the requirement that all participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled.
Use Android System Key Verifier when supported
Google also documents Android System Key Verifier for public-key verification. Both devices need all of the following:

Troubleshoot an RCS status that will not connect
Diagnose the status before repeatedly switching RCS off and on. Google warns that cycling the setting can remove you from group chats. Turning RCS off is described as a targeted recovery step for situations such as changing messaging apps or phones and then missing messages, not as the routine first fix.
Run the basic checks
- Make sure Google Messages is the phone’s default SMS app.
- Confirm the phone has an active internet connection through mobile data or Wi-Fi.
- Confirm the phone can receive SMS, because number verification may require an incoming text.
- Update Google Messages and Google Play Services.
- Check the Android version and whether the carrier supports RCS for your device and region.
After making these checks, return to Messages settings > RCS chats and read the status again. A successful connection should display Connected; it still requires a separate check inside each conversation.
If the status says “Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry”
Leave RCS enabled while you complete the checks above, then allow the verification process to retry. Repeatedly disabling and re-enabling the feature is not the recommended routine fix. If verification cannot complete, messages may continue through SMS or MMS, which do not have end-to-end encryption.
If the status says the carrier disabled RCS
Contact the carrier. A carrier-side restriction cannot be corrected by changing the encryption indicator or by reinstalling a conversation. Ask whether RCS is supported for the specific device, phone number, plan, and region.
If RCS is “Not supported”
Messages can still be sent, but Google Messages may use SMS or MMS. Treat those messages as unencrypted and do not assume that the presence of the Messages app alone provides protected delivery.

What to do after changing phones or messaging apps
When someone changes messaging apps or operating systems, Google Messages may not immediately detect that a conversation is no longer eligible. During that transition, an encrypted message can temporarily appear unreadable. The practical response is to confirm which app and operating system each participant now uses, check RCS status again, and avoid assuming that an unreadable message proves the thread is still protected.
Google describes turning RCS off as a targeted recovery step for situations such as changing messaging apps or phones and then missing messages, not as the first action for an ordinary connection problem. If you must use that recovery path, understand that leaving group chats is a possible consequence. After changing the setting, wait for the status to settle and recheck the affected conversation rather than sending sensitive content immediately.
A quick protection check before sending sensitive information
- Open the intended conversation, not just the global RCS settings.
- Confirm the thread is identified as an RCS chat.
- Check for the lock on the compose/send control; if available, check for the lock beside the message timestamp.
- Confirm every participant uses Google Messages with RCS enabled.
- Stop if the message will send as SMS or MMS, the chat includes an iPhone user, or it is a verified business conversation.
- For higher-assurance identity checking, use Verify encryption and compare the code with the contact.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking only at the global setting: A connected RCS status does not guarantee that a particular thread is encrypted.
- Assuming all RCS is protected: Cross-platform RCS with iPhone users and verified business RCS do not have the documented end-to-end encryption.
- Ignoring fallback: A weak connection or unsupported setup can send a message as SMS or MMS. Read the send control before sending.
- Treating verification as activation: Code comparison confirms identity; it does not enable encryption. Encryption is automatic when the chat is eligible.
- Toggling RCS repeatedly: This can remove you from group chats and is not Google’s routine connection remedy.
- Overlooking device limits: Android Go phones may have encryption limitations, and Android System Key Verifier does not support Android Go devices, tablets, or wearables.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an end-to-end-encryption switch in Google Messages?
No. Turn on RCS chats. Eligible RCS conversations between Google Messages users are automatically upgraded to end-to-end encryption.
How do I know whether my current message is encrypted?
Look for the RCS chat banner and the lock on the compose/send button. Google also documents a lock beside the timestamp of an encrypted message when that indicator is shown.
Does a connected RCS status mean every chat is encrypted?
No. Every participant must use Google Messages with RCS enabled, and the message must actually be sent as RCS. Check the individual thread and its send control.
Are SMS and MMS encrypted?
No. Google states that end-to-end encryption is not available for SMS or MMS messages.
Are Google Messages chats with iPhone users encrypted?
Google’s current FAQ says Google Messages RCS chats with iPhone users do not have end-to-end encryption. Do not treat cross-platform RCS as equivalent to an eligible Google Messages-to-Google Messages chat.
Best Value
Are verified business RCS chats encrypted?
No. Verified business RCS conversations are not end-to-end encrypted. Businesses, messaging solution providers, and carriers may access content for delivery and other purposes.
Do I have to verify a contact for encryption to work?
No. Verification is optional. Encryption remains on for an eligible conversation even if you skip the code comparison.
What should I do if RCS will not connect?
Check that Google Messages is the default SMS app, the phone has internet access and can receive SMS, Google Messages and Google Play Services are updated, and the Android version and carrier support RCS. If the carrier disabled RCS, contact the carrier. Avoid repeatedly switching RCS off and on.
Why did an encrypted message become unreadable after a phone change?
Google warns that after someone changes messaging apps or operating systems, the app may not immediately detect that the chat is no longer eligible. Confirm each participant’s current app and operating system, check RCS status, and do not assume the unreadable message proves continued protection.

Quick Recap
The Bottom Line
There is no separate encryption toggle in Google Messages: enable RCS chats, then verify the individual thread. The RCS banner and lock on the compose/send control are the practical signs of an encrypted chat. If the lock is absent—or the message is SMS/MMS, involves an iPhone user, or is a verified business conversation—do not treat it as end-to-end encrypted.
