To make Windows 11 ask before sending a file to the Recycle Bin, right-click the Recycle Bin on the desktop, choose Properties, select Display delete confirmation dialog, and then choose Apply and OK. This built-in control is stored in Recycle Bin Properties, not in the general File Explorer options.
What the confirmation setting does
Windows 11 normally moves files deleted from a local hard disk to the Recycle Bin without asking for a second confirmation. Enabling Display delete confirmation dialog adds a prompt before that operation proceeds. You can then cancel an accidental deletion or confirm it deliberately.

Microsoft’s settings catalog identifies this control as Recycle Bin | Display delete confirmation dialog. A Microsoft Learn Q&A answer dated January 16, 2023 provides the desktop click path used below. That Q&A response was posted by an anonymous responder; it is practical guidance rather than a named Microsoft support statement.
The prompt is a safety check, not a backup. It does not create another copy of a file, prevent malware or hardware failure, or guarantee that an item can be recovered later.

Turn on the prompt from Recycle Bin Properties
- Show the Recycle Bin on the desktop. If its icon is already visible, continue to step 2.
- Right-click Recycle Bin and select Properties.
- In the Recycle Bin Properties window, check Display delete confirmation dialog.
- Select Apply, then select OK.
- Delete a low-value test file using your usual method. Confirm that Windows displays a delete-confirmation message before completing the operation.
The setting is per Recycle Bin configuration exposed by Windows, so there is no separate File Explorer checkbox to enable. If you do not see the option, make sure you opened the Recycle Bin’s Properties dialog rather than a folder’s Properties dialog.
If the Recycle Bin icon is missing
Windows can hide the desktop icon even though the Recycle Bin itself is available. Restore the icon through the personalization controls:
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Open Themes.
- Select Desktop icon settings.
- Check Recycle Bin, select Apply, and then select OK.
The Recycle Bin is one of Windows’ default desktop icons, and this page controls whether it appears. Once it is visible, repeat the Recycle Bin Properties steps. Hiding the icon does not remove the Recycle Bin or disable deletion; it only removes the convenient route to its Properties dialog.

Use a disposable test file
Create a small text file in a normal folder on the computer’s internal drive. Give it an unmistakable name such as delete-test.txt, close it, and delete it. The confirmation prompt should appear before the file is moved to the Recycle Bin. Choose No or Cancel to verify that the file remains, then delete it again and choose Yes if you want to finish the test.

Confirm the result in the Recycle Bin
After confirming deletion, open Recycle Bin and check that the test file is listed. You can right-click it and choose Restore to return it to its original location. This verifies the normal local-disk path without depending on an important document.
If no prompt appears
- Reopen Recycle Bin Properties and verify that Display delete confirmation dialog is still checked.
- Make sure the test file is on a local hard disk and that you are using a normal delete action, not a permanent-delete command.
- Check that you did not open Properties for a folder, shortcut, or another desktop object.
- Sign out and back in, or restart Windows, if the checkbox is selected but the shell has not reflected the change.
Windows’ documented deletion behavior does not establish that this prompt intercepts every application, command, shortcut, removable-drive operation, or permanent-deletion route. Treat the test as confirmation of the ordinary local-disk path, not proof that every deletion method will display a dialog.
Which deletion operations are covered?
The important distinction is where the item is stored and whether the operation uses the Recycle Bin. Microsoft’s general deletion guidance says that deleting from a hard disk moves the item to the Recycle Bin, while deleting from a disk, CD, or network location destroys the item rather than placing it in the Recycle Bin.
| Operation or location | Documented behavior | What the prompt setting means |
|---|---|---|
| Delete a file from a local hard disk through the normal Windows route | The item is moved to the Recycle Bin. | The confirmation dialog is intended for this Recycle Bin path. |
| Delete from a disk, CD, or network location | Microsoft says the item is destroyed instead of being placed in the Recycle Bin. | Do not assume the Recycle Bin confirmation setting will appear. |
| Permanent-delete command or an application’s own deletion workflow | The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not provide a complete current behavior matrix. | Test the specific application or command; do not promise a prompt. |
| Emptying the Recycle Bin | Items already in the Recycle Bin are removed from that holding area. | The delete-confirmation checkbox is not a backup or a guarantee against later removal. |
Because the evidence does not define every combination of apps, commands, shortcuts, removable media, and network paths, the safest rule is simple: rely on the dialog for ordinary Recycle Bin deletions, and use backups for anything that must be recoverable.

Confirmation is not recovery protection
A confirmation prompt gives you one chance to catch a mistaken click. It does not preserve a second copy and does not protect an item after you confirm deletion. A file can still be removed later by emptying the Recycle Bin, an automated cleanup policy, storage failure, or another user with access to the computer.
For documents that matter, keep a separate backup. The prompt should be treated as an input safeguard, while a backup is the recovery mechanism. Restoring an item from the Recycle Bin is possible only while that item remains there and the underlying storage is usable.
Storage Sense can remove Recycle Bin contents later
Storage Sense is a separate Windows cleanup feature. Microsoft says it can delete Recycle Bin contents after a selected period and operates on the system drive. Therefore, enabling the confirmation dialog does not prevent later automatic cleanup.
Why the two settings are different
- Display delete confirmation dialog: asks for approval at the time of a supported deletion.
- Storage Sense: performs scheduled or automatic cleanup according to its storage settings.
If a file must remain recoverable, inspect Storage Sense rather than assuming the confirmation checkbox changes cleanup behavior. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage to review Storage Sense controls and the Recycle Bin cleanup duration. The exact options shown can vary by Windows version and administrator policy.

A 2026 filename display issue and its fix
Microsoft documented an issue in which a confirmation dialog could show an internal filename when permanently deleting one item from the Recycle Bin. The issue affected the text displayed in the dialog; Microsoft said the Recycle Bin continued to show the original name and that restoring the item retained its original name.
Microsoft said the issue was addressed by Windows updates released on and after July 14, 2026, including KB5099414. If a fully updated Windows 11 installation still shows an unexpected internal name in that narrow permanent-deletion scenario, install all available updates, restart the computer, and test again. Do not infer from this issue that ordinary files have been renamed or corrupted.

The Properties command is unavailable
Confirm that you are right-clicking the actual Recycle Bin desktop icon. A taskbar shortcut, a search result, or a folder named “Recycle Bin” may not expose the same Properties page. If the icon is hidden, restore it through Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings.

Use a standard Windows 11 desktop session and open the Recycle Bin Properties dialog directly. Managed work or school computers can apply policies that alter shell behavior. If the option is absent after the icon is restored, ask the administrator whether a policy or customized shell is restricting Recycle Bin settings.

The prompt appears for one method but not another
That difference can be expected. The documented setting is associated with Recycle Bin behavior, while Microsoft’s guidance does not promise coverage for every app, command, network location, or removable medium. Use the method-specific behavior you observe and do not treat a prompt from one route as evidence about another.
The file disappeared despite confirming the setting
Check whether the file was on a network location, disk, CD, or another path that bypasses the Recycle Bin. Also check whether Storage Sense or another cleanup process removed an item that had already been placed in the Recycle Bin. For essential files, restore from a separate backup rather than depending on the prompt.
When to leave the setting off
The dialog is useful on a shared family computer, for a user who often deletes files accidentally, or on a workstation where an extra pause is worth the protection. It can slow down high-volume cleanup because every supported deletion requires another click. Users who deliberately delete many disposable files may prefer to leave it off and rely on careful selection plus backups.
You can change the choice at any time: return to Recycle Bin > Properties, clear or select Display delete confirmation dialog, and choose Apply and OK. Changing the checkbox does not restore files already removed and does not alter Storage Sense’s separate rules.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Enable the feature in Recycle Bin Properties, not File Explorer’s general options.
- If the icon is hidden, turn it on through Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings.
- Test with a disposable local file before trusting the behavior.
- The prompt is not a backup and may not apply to network, disk, CD, removable-media, application-specific, or permanent-deletion routes.
- Review Storage Sense separately because it can automatically clear Recycle Bin contents after a selected period.
- Install Windows updates released from July 14, 2026 onward, such as KB5099414, to receive Microsoft’s fix for the documented internal-filename display issue.
