You then add friends with the game’s account ID and invite them from its social or party screen.
The exact menu, supported console combination, edition and subscription requirement are game-specific. Fortnite, Call of Duty and Minecraft illustrate three different setups: an in-game switch, a title-and-console privacy combination, and separate editions that cannot play together natively.

What cross-play does—and what it does not do
Cross-play lets people using different hardware join the same online match, cooperative session or shared world. A PlayStation player might join an Xbox or PC player when the game, mode and region support that combination. It is not the same as cross-progression: a game may let you play together without synchronizing every purchase, save file or progression level across platforms.
Cross-play is also not universal within a franchise. One Call of Duty release can expose a cross-play switch while another uses a different label. Minecraft Java and Bedrock are both called Minecraft but run on different server systems. A game can support cross-play in public matchmaking yet restrict it in a particular competitive mode, beta, tournament or region.

Use this order whenever you are setting up a new group:
- Identify the exact game release, edition, platform and game mode.
- Update every player to the same available version.
- Link the publisher account the game requires.
- Allow multiplayer, communication and friend invitations in console or PC privacy controls.
- Enable the game’s cross-play and, if separate, cross-play communication settings.
- Add the other players by their publisher or in-game ID and send the invitation from the social menu.
- Restart the game after changing account or privacy settings.
If a step is missing, the invitation may never appear even though both players have an internet connection.

Confirm the exact platform combination
Write down what each person is using: PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC, Steam, Battle.net or another supported storefront. Then check the title’s current official support information for that combination. “PC” may represent several network clients with different account and privacy behavior, and a console version may not share matchmaking with a mobile or legacy version.
Install the same release and patch level
Have everyone start the game’s update process before troubleshooting. A console that has paused an update, or a PC using a different test or legacy branch, can be unable to join even when cross-play is enabled. Close and reopen the game after an update so the new network services are loaded.
Link the required publisher account
Most cross-play systems use a publisher account rather than the console profile alone. Sign in to that account on each platform, finish any email or age-verification step, and check that the intended console profile is attached to the intended account. A second account can make a friend search appear empty or send an invitation to the wrong identity.
Review privacy, child-account and communication permissions
Console-level settings can override a game’s own switch. Allow online multiplayer, friend requests, joining other players, cross-network play and voice or text communication as appropriate. A child account may need an organizer or parent to approve these permissions. If you can see a friend but cannot invite them, inspect these controls before reinstalling the game.

Check online-service subscriptions
Some console platforms require an online multiplayer subscription for paid games. The requirement can differ for free-to-play games, local multiplayer and the specific console generation. Confirm the subscription on the account that is attempting to host or join; cross-play cannot bypass a platform’s online-access rule.
How to turn on cross-play in Fortnite
Fortnite uses an Epic account for its social graph and cross-platform play. On PlayStation, the documented in-game path is:
- Launch Fortnite and remain in the lobby.
- Open the lobby menu and choose Settings.
- Open Account and Privacy.
- Scroll to Gameplay Privacy.
- Set Allow Cross Platform Play to Yes.
- Apply the change if the screen presents an apply or confirm control, then return to the lobby.
Epic’s social, gameplay-privacy and communication controls are grouped in the settings menus. If the option is unavailable, dimmed or repeatedly returns to its old value, check the platform account’s parental and privacy controls. A console restriction can prevent Fortnite from accepting the in-game setting.
Invite a cross-platform Fortnite friend
- Make sure both players are signed in to the Epic accounts connected to their consoles or PCs.
- Open Fortnite’s social or friends panel.
- Search for the other player using the Epic display name or the identifier the panel requests.
- Accept the friend request on the receiving account.
- Invite the friend to the party from the social panel, then select the mode and start matchmaking.
Use the Epic identity rather than assuming a console gamertag is the searchable name. If a player changed display names, confirm the current spelling and capitalization shown in the account’s social panel.
When Fortnite cross-play still fails
- Friend cannot be found: verify that both Epic accounts are linked and that the request was accepted on the correct account.
- Invite is blocked: permit multiplayer, friend requests and communication in the console privacy or family settings.
- Party shows an incompatibility: confirm that everyone has the current Fortnite update and is selecting a mode available to all platforms.
- Voice works for one player only: check Fortnite voice-chat permissions as well as the console’s communication setting; cross-play and voice chat can be controlled separately.
How to turn on cross-play in Call of Duty
Call of Duty uses Activision accounts for cross-platform friends and matchmaking, but menu labels vary by release. The following path applies to the console controls documented for Black Ops 6:
- Open the game’s main menu.
- Choose Options, then Settings.
- Open Account & Network.
- Find the cross-play control and set it to enabled. If the release shows a separate cross-play communication control, enable that as well when you want voice or text chat with players on other platforms.
- Return to the lobby and allow the account settings to synchronize.
Do not assume that this path or these labels apply to every Call of Duty title. Check the support instructions for the exact release installed on your system before following button-by-button directions.

Xbox can override the in-game choice
On Xbox, console privacy settings can override the Black Ops 6 in-game setting. Permit cross-network play, multiplayer and communication in the Xbox account’s privacy and online-safety controls. If those controls deny cross-network play, changing the switch inside Call of Duty will not restore it.
Steam and Battle.net cannot disable cross-play for Black Ops 6 through a comparable platform switch; the title’s account and network settings govern the feature. Other releases or platforms may behave differently, so use the current instructions for that release.
Add an Activision friend and join a party
- Confirm that each player is signed in to the intended Activision account and that the console or PC profile is linked to it.
- Open the Social or Friends panel from the Call of Duty lobby.
- Choose the option to add a friend through the Activision account and enter the requested Activision ID, including any identifier shown after the name.
- Have the recipient accept the request, then select the friend in the social list and choose Join or Invite to party.
- Use a playlist and mode that support the group’s platform combination.
An invitation can fail when one player is appearing offline, has blocked the other account, or has communication restricted. Resolve those account states before changing matchmaking settings.
Minecraft: Java and Bedrock are different cases
Minecraft requires you to identify the edition before you change any setting. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different server systems, so Java players cannot natively join a Bedrock player’s world. A launcher or console label that simply says “Minecraft” does not by itself tell you which edition is running.
Bedrock cross-play setup
Bedrock is the edition used for cross-platform play among its supported consoles, Windows devices and other Bedrock platforms. Both players need current versions, Microsoft accounts and permissions that allow multiplayer. Some consoles also require the platform’s online multiplayer subscription.
- Sign in to a Microsoft account inside Minecraft on every device.
- Confirm that the account’s privacy and family settings permit multiplayer, friend requests and communication.
- Launch the same current Bedrock release on each device.
- On the host device, open or create the world and remain online.
- On the joining device, choose Play, then open the Friends tab.
- Select the online friend’s world and choose Join.
The host’s world appears only while that player is online unless the world is hosted by a separate always-on service. A player can therefore be correctly configured yet see no joinable world because the host closed the game or is using a different edition.

Java Edition limitations
Java players can play with other Java players through a compatible Java server or local network setup, but they cannot natively join Bedrock servers or worlds. A third-party bridge may claim to connect editions, but that is a separate server technology with its own compatibility, moderation and account requirements; it is not the built-in cross-play switch described here.
Minecraft account and subscription checks
- Verify that each device is signed in to the Microsoft account whose friends list you intend to use.
- For a child account, have the family organizer allow multiplayer and communication.
- Check the console’s online multiplayer subscription where the platform requires one.
- Install the same Bedrock update on every device; an older client may be unable to join a newer world.
How cross-play works in other popular games
There is no universal cross-play button. Use this title-by-title procedure when the game is not covered above:
- Identify the release: record the exact title, edition, platform, region and mode. A remaster, annual sequel and free-to-play edition may use different services.
- Find the account requirement: look in the title’s Account, Profile, Online or Social menu for the publisher account that owns the friend list.
- Update clients: install the same current version and restart after patching.
- Open network and privacy settings: enable cross-play, cross-network play, multiplayer and communication where those controls exist.
- Check platform restrictions: review child-account, parental-control, blocked-user and online-subscription settings.
- Add the correct ID: use the publisher ID or in-game name requested by the social panel, not automatically the console gamertag.
- Invite from the game: create or join a party through the title’s Social, Friends or Party menu rather than relying solely on a platform-level invite.
- Test the intended mode: begin with a standard public or cooperative mode before diagnosing a mode-specific restriction.
Official support information for the exact release should be the final authority for supported platform combinations, regional limits, subscription rules and whether cross-play can be disabled.

Why a cross-play invitation does not work
“The friend is not online”
Check that the other player is signed in to the expected publisher account, has accepted the friend request and is not appearing offline. In Minecraft Bedrock, the host must be actively online with the world open before it appears under Play > Friends.
“We use different platforms, but the game says incompatible”
Compare the exact editions, releases and modes. Java versus Bedrock is a permanent built-in incompatibility. In other games, a legacy console version, test build or mode restriction can produce the same message. Update all clients and verify the title’s supported combination.
“The cross-play switch is missing or locked”
Look for a console-level privacy or family restriction. A child account, blocked communication category or administrator policy can hide or override the in-game option. Sign in with the account that manages those permissions, change the setting, then restart the game.

“We can matchmake, but cannot talk”
Cross-play and cross-play communication are often separate. Enable voice or text communication in the game and allow communication with players outside the platform in the console privacy controls. Check mute, block and party-chat states before changing matchmaking.

“The invitation arrives, but joining fails”
Verify that everyone has completed the current update, is using the correct publisher account and has the required online subscription. Leave the party, restart each client after the account or privacy change, and send a fresh invitation. If only one mode fails, test a standard mode to isolate a mode-specific restriction.
“Everything is enabled, but the service still refuses the connection”
Check the exact release’s official support page for a regional, network, maintenance or platform limitation. Cross-play can be temporarily unavailable during service incidents, and a game may limit it in selected regions or playlists even when the global setting is enabled.
Privacy and safety choices to make before inviting strangers
Enabling cross-play can expand the pool of players who can contact or communicate with an account. Set voice and text chat to the level appropriate for each player, especially children. Use friend-only invitations when a game offers that choice, and block or report abusive accounts through the game’s moderation tools. A parent or family organizer should review both the platform privacy page and the game’s own communication controls; changing only one leaves the other in force.
Do not share a password, recovery code or payment information to solve a friend-list problem. Account linking should happen through the game’s own sign-in screen or the platform’s documented account-management page.

A reliable final checklist
- Every player is running the same current game release and compatible edition.
- The required Epic, Activision, Microsoft or other publisher account is linked to the correct platform profile.
- Multiplayer, cross-network play, friend requests and communication are allowed in privacy and parental controls.
- The game’s cross-play setting is enabled, with cross-play communication enabled separately when available.
- Friends were added using the publisher or in-game ID the social menu requests.
- The selected mode and region support the group’s platform combination.
- Any required console online multiplayer subscription is active.
- All players restarted the game after changing account or privacy settings.
- The exact release’s official support information has been checked for current platform, mode and regional restrictions.
