Turn on automatic updates wherever your browser or operating system provides that control, then verify the result on the browser’s own About or update screen. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox can check their running installation directly; Chrome on Android is additionally controlled by Google Play; and Safari is updated as part of macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS. A downloaded update is not fully active until you relaunch the browser when prompted.
What “automatic updates” actually means
Automatic updating is a two-part process: obtaining new browser files and completing installation. A browser may download an update silently in the background, but continue running the older build until you close and reopen it. An About page can therefore show a pending Relaunch or Restart action even though the download has finished.

Verification is separate from enabling automation. After changing a setting, open the relevant About, Software Update, or app-store screen and wait for its check to complete. The reliable result is an explicit “up to date” status or no available update for that device. A version number by itself does not prove that it is the newest version eligible for your operating system, installation channel, or management policy.

First identify who controls your browser’s updates

Missing or disabled controls are not conclusive evidence that updates are off. A metered connection, a Linux package manager, an app store, or a work or school administrator may own the update path instead of the browser itself.

Google Chrome on a computer
Check Chrome and finish an update
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot More menu.
- Choose Help, then About Google Chrome.
- Leave the page open while Chrome checks for updates. It displays the installed version and reports whether an update is available.
- If the page shows Relaunch, select it. Chrome closes and reopens to make the downloaded update the running version.
Chrome normally downloads updates in the background and applies them after you close and reopen the browser. If you cannot relaunch immediately, the update remains pending until the next restart; browsing in the meantime does not mean the new build is active.
Automatic updating on macOS
Google documents an Automatically update Chrome for all users option on the About Google Chrome page when Chrome is installed in the Applications folder. The option may not appear for every installation. The updater’s behavior depends on the installation location, permissions, and channel, so do not treat the absence of this specific switch as proof that Chrome cannot update automatically.
Linux and Chromebook exceptions
On Linux, Chrome updates through the distribution or package channel that supplied it. Use your normal system-update tool, allow the package operation to finish, and then open About Google Chrome to confirm the browser sees the new installation. On a Chromebook, update ChromeOS rather than looking for an independent Chrome package; Chrome is delivered with the operating system.
Google Chrome on Android
Enable and install through Google Play
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Under Updates available, find Chrome and select Update if an update is offered.
Chrome’s automatic behavior follows your Play Store settings, including whether updates are restricted to Wi-Fi, paused, or blocked by device policy. To inspect Chrome itself, open Chrome, tap More, choose Settings, and open About Chrome. Use both screens when troubleshooting: Play Store confirms the app-delivery status, while About Chrome confirms the browser installation it is running.

Microsoft Edge
Check the update page
- Open Edge.
- Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge. You can also type
edge://settings/helpin the address bar. - Wait for the check to finish. If Edge offers an update, allow it to download and install.
- Restart Edge when prompted so the downloaded files become the active version.
Automatic and metered-network settings
When available on your device, enable Download and install updates automatically on the About Microsoft Edge page. Some systems also show a separate option for updates over metered connections. Enabling downloads over a metered connection can consume cellular or capped data and may create charges, so use it only when that trade-off is acceptable.
Edge normally updates when the browser restarts. If a setting is dimmed, absent, or cannot be changed, the browser may be managed by an organization. A company or school policy can set the update schedule, restrict metered-network downloads, or require an administrator to approve changes.
Mozilla Firefox
Check, download, and restart
- Open Firefox and select the menu button.
- Choose Help, then About Firefox.
- Firefox checks for an update and downloads it when one is available.
- Select Restart to update Firefox (or the equivalent restart control) to make the new release active.
Firefox updates automatically in most installations. For a direct Mozilla installation, open Firefox settings and find the Firefox Updates section to review installation behavior. A downloaded update that is waiting for restart is not yet the version serving your tabs.
Store and Linux installations
If Firefox came from the Microsoft Store, updates are delivered by that store rather than Firefox’s standalone updater. If it came from a Linux distribution, use the distribution’s package repository and system-update process. After either route completes, return to About Firefox to verify the browser recognizes the installed package.

Safari on Apple devices
Safari is bundled with Apple operating systems, so it does not have a separate, cross-platform Safari auto-update switch. Apple delivers Safari changes through applicable updates or upgrades for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS.
Mac
- Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
- Choose General, then Software Update.
- Open the Automatic Updates information or options.
- Choose whether the Mac should automatically download macOS updates, install macOS updates, and install security responses and system files.
- Return to Software Update and install any update offered. Restart when macOS requires it.
The installed macOS version is the relevant Safari baseline. A Mac can have the latest Safari available for its supported macOS even when a newer Safari feature is unavailable on an older operating-system release.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Open Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Automatically Install for hands-off installation, or turn on Automatically Download if you want to install downloaded updates manually.
- On the Software Update screen, read the installed iOS or iPadOS version and install any update that is offered.
The Software Update screen reports both the version currently installed and whether another update is available. Because Safari ships with iOS or iPadOS, updating that operating system is the way to update Safari.

How to verify that an update is really active
- Open the browser’s own About or update screen, not just a general download page.
- Wait until the check finishes; an old version number while a check is still running is not a final result.
- Read the status. “Up to date” or no available update means the installed build is current for that device and channel at that moment.
- If you see Relaunch, Restart, or a similar completion button, use it before treating the update as installed.
- Open the same page again after restarting and confirm that the pending action and update notice are gone.
- For Android Chrome, check both Play Store’s Chrome entry and Chrome’s About Chrome page.
- For Safari, check the operating system’s Software Update page and record the installed OS version.
This process proves that the browser has finished the update available to that installation. It does not promise that every device receives a release at the same instant: eligibility can depend on operating-system support, staged delivery, the installation channel, and administrator policy.

The page says an update is ready but asks for a restart
Save your work, close the browser, and use its Relaunch or Restart control. If you postpone it, the browser continues using the previous build until a full restart completes the installation.
The browser says it is up to date, but another device has a newer version
Compare like with like: the same browser, operating system, installation source, and release channel. A newer release may not yet be eligible for your operating system or may be rolling out in stages. Check again after the browser’s own update check completes rather than relying on a version number copied from another device.
There is no update button or automatic switch
- On Linux, use the distribution’s package manager or repository settings.
- For Firefox installed from the Microsoft Store, open the Store’s update area.
- For Chrome on Android, review Play Store update settings and the device’s network restrictions.
- For Safari, use operating-system Software Update settings.
- On a work or school device, ask the administrator whether policy controls updates.
Updates stop on cellular or metered internet
Review the browser or app-store option governing updates over metered connections. Allowing those downloads can restore automatic updating, but it may use capped data or incur charges. A safer alternative is to connect to an unmetered network and run the About or app-store check manually.
Controls are greyed out
Greyed-out controls usually indicate that another authority owns the setting: an organization policy, operating-system restriction, app-store rule, or package-management configuration. Do not attempt to bypass it with an unofficial updater. Contact the administrator or change the setting in the system that actually manages the installation.
The update repeatedly fails
- Restart the device, then run the browser or operating-system update check again.
- Confirm that the device has sufficient free storage and a stable connection.
- Check whether security software, a proxy, or an organization policy is blocking the updater.
- Use the official store or package repository for the installation source rather than mixing channels.
- If the official update page still fails, record the displayed error and ask the device administrator or the browser’s support service for help.
A practical maintenance routine
- Leave automatic browser, app-store, and operating-system updates enabled unless a managed policy requires otherwise.
- Once a month, open each browser’s About page to verify status; do this immediately after any notice that a restart is required.
- Restart browsers when prompted instead of postponing indefinitely.
- On Apple devices, check Software Update because Safari’s status follows the OS.
- On Android, review Play Store’s pending updates and confirm Chrome’s About Chrome page.
- On Linux, include the browser’s package source in normal system maintenance.
- On managed devices, follow the administrator’s update schedule and report a persistent pending update.
Security and compatibility considerations
Keeping a browser current supplies security fixes, web-platform changes, and compatibility updates, but an update can also require a browser restart or a newer operating system. Save form entries and documents before restarting. If a critical web application breaks after an update, record the browser version, operating system, and installation channel; those details help support staff distinguish a browser defect from a policy or compatibility limitation.
Do not install “update” utilities from unsolicited pop-ups. Use the browser’s built-in About page, the official app store, the operating system’s Software Update panel, or the Linux distribution’s configured repository. These paths preserve the correct update owner and make the resulting status verifiable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an automatic download mean my browser is already updated?
No. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox can download an update before it is active. If the About page offers Relaunch or Restart, the older build is still running until you complete that action.
Can I update Safari without updating iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or visionOS?
Safari is delivered with Apple’s operating systems. Use Software Update to install the applicable operating-system update; there is no separate general Safari updater.
Why is an update control missing on my work computer?
An organization may manage the browser’s update policy. A disabled or absent control can be intentional; ask the administrator which schedule and installation channel the device uses.
