On a supported Android phone, open Settings > Safety and emergency > Earthquake alerts and switch alerts on. If that menu is missing, use Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts or search Settings for Earthquake alerts. Android requires Wi‑Fi or mobile data, and the feature is available only in supported countries and regions.

Turn on Android Earthquake Alerts

Android says Earthquake alerts are on by default on supported devices, but you should verify the switch yourself—especially after changing phones, resetting settings, updating Android, or moving to another country. A default setting is not the same as a guarantee that the feature is available in your location or that a warning will reach the phone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Safety and emergency.
  3. Tap Earthquake alerts.
  4. Turn the switch on.

The exact wording or location can vary by Android version, phone manufacturer, and region. If you do not see Safety and emergency, open Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts. You can also open Settings and search for Earthquake alerts; Google Play services documents this direct method as: open Settings, search for Earthquake alerts, and turn alerts on or off.

Searching is often the quickest approach when a manufacturer has renamed a menu or placed safety controls in a different section. Search for the complete phrase rather than only “earthquake.” If there is no result in either Settings search or the documented menu paths, continue with the region, Android-version, and Google Play services checks below instead of assuming the control is merely hidden.

What the switch means

An enabled switch allows the Android Earthquake Alerts System to deliver an alert when its detection network estimates that an earthquake near you meets the service’s criteria. It does not create a guarantee that every earthquake will be detected or that every alert will arrive before shaking.

The switch is therefore a readiness control, not a test control. Turning it on does not send a confirmation message, produce a sound, or simulate an earthquake. You verify readiness by checking the conditions the service requires and by understanding the limits of its detection and delivery process.

Requirements before alerts can arrive

  • Supported location: Earthquake alerts are not available everywhere. Google maintains a live list of supported countries and regions; availability can change, so check the current Android Help information for the place where the phone is being used.
  • Network connection: Wi‑Fi or mobile data must be on so the phone can receive the alert.
  • Compatible Android software: Google says some safety and emergency features work only on Android 9 and later. The Earthquake alerts menu and behavior can still vary by device and region.
  • Google Play services: Google identifies Google Play services as the service that provides Earthquake Alerts. It should be installed and current.
  • Notifications allowed: Notification, sound, and vibration settings must not suppress the warning. Do Not Disturb and other interruption controls can affect how you notice it.

These requirements are independent: an enabled switch cannot compensate for an unsupported region, no data connection, missing Google Play services, or notification controls that silence the phone.

Connectivity means more than having the Wi‑Fi icon visible. Wi‑Fi without internet access, Airplane mode, or a disabled mobile-data connection can prevent delivery. For a practical check, load an ordinary web page or another online service while connected to Wi‑Fi, then verify that mobile data is available as a fallback when you leave that network.

Region is based on where the phone is being used, not simply on the account used to set it up. If you travel, the same handset can show different availability or behavior. Google’s supported-region list is live, so an old country list copied into a guide may no longer be accurate.

How Android detects and delivers an earthquake warning

Magnitude and nearby-area threshold

Google’s Android Help says Android can send alerts for nearby earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above. The number is an approximate threshold for the service, not a promise that every event at that magnitude will trigger a message. Detection, distance, estimated shaking, and available data all affect whether a particular phone receives an alert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Nearby” matters as much as the magnitude estimate. A qualifying event far from your location may not produce an alert for your phone, while an event that affects your area can be considered even when the first estimate changes as more information arrives. The service is designed to identify phones in an affected area, not to announce every earthquake everywhere.

Two detection systems

In California, Oregon, and Washington, Android earthquake alerts are based on ShakeAlert. In other supported locations, they use the Android Earthquake Alerts System, which uses Android phones as part of its detection network. The technology behind an alert therefore depends on where the phone is located.

This distinction helps explain why two people with identical Android settings can receive differently timed messages in different places. ShakeAlert coverage uses its own infrastructure in those three U.S. states; the Android system is the detection method used in other supported locations. Neither description changes the basic user requirements: a supported location, a compatible phone, Google Play services, and Wi‑Fi or mobile data.

Approximate location and privacy

Android uses approximate device locations to determine which phones are close enough to an earthquake to receive an alert. Google says that information is not used to identify or locate a specific user. The location decision is about selecting an affected area, not tracking an individual phone for its own sake.

Because the system uses an approximate area, the alert is not a personalized intensity forecast for your exact room or address. It is a regional warning selected for phones that may be close enough to the estimated event to benefit from notice.

Alert priority

Android’s notification hierarchy places wireless emergency alerts and Emergency Alert System messages above Earthquake Alerts. Earthquake Alerts take priority over ordinary app notifications. A warning can therefore interrupt regular notifications, while an official wireless emergency message may appear ahead of it.

Priority does not mean that every message uses the same channel. Wireless emergency alerts and Emergency Alert System messages are separate systems with their own issuing authorities and delivery paths. Seeing one does not prove that the Earthquake Alerts switch is enabled, and not seeing one does not prove that Android Earthquake Alerts are broken.

How to check whether Earthquake Alerts are working without an earthquake

There is no Google-documented Earthquake Alerts demonstration, simulator, or button that sends a test earthquake to your phone. You can still verify the configuration that must be correct for a real warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a configuration check

  1. Search Settings for Earthquake alerts and confirm that the switch is on.
  2. Confirm that either Wi‑Fi or mobile data is currently connected.
  3. Check that your present country or region appears in Google’s current supported-region information.
  4. Open the phone’s software information and confirm that it is running a compatible Android release; Android 9 or later is the baseline Google cites for some safety and emergency features.
  5. Check that Google Play services is installed, enabled, and updated through the phone’s normal system or app-update controls.
  6. Review notification permission, alert volume, vibration, and Do Not Disturb settings so an incoming warning can be seen and heard.

This confirms readiness, not successful delivery. A real alert depends on an earthquake being detected, the estimated shaking affecting your area, and the system having enough information to issue a warning.

Write down the result of each check if you are troubleshooting more than one phone. For example, record the Android version, whether Google Play services is enabled, the current region, and whether the phone was online. This separates a configuration problem from the service’s unavoidable detection and timing limits.

Do not mistake Wireless emergency alerts testing for an earthquake test

Android also has a separate Test alerts control for wireless emergency alerts. Google documents it under Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts, and the control is exposed after Developer options are enabled. That test is a recurring wireless-emergency test, commonly configured as a monthly test; it is not documented as a simulation of the Android Earthquake Alerts channel. Running it does not prove that Earthquake Alerts themselves will fire.

In other words, a successful wireless-emergency test confirms only that the wireless-emergency test path can present its own message. It does not validate the Earthquake alerts switch, the Android detection network, the supported-region rule, or the network conditions required for an actual earthquake warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot a missing or silent earthquake warning

If an earthquake occurred nearby and your phone did not warn you, work through the checks in this order. The absence of an alert does not by itself prove that the setting failed, because the service has detection and timing limits described below.

1. Find the setting again

Use the Settings search box for Earthquake alerts. If search returns nothing, check Safety and emergency, then Location > Advanced. A missing menu usually points to device, software, or regional availability rather than a hidden on/off state.

Confirm that you are checking the phone that was actually in the affected location. A tablet, secondary handset, or phone left without a data connection may have different availability and cannot stand in for the device you expected to warn you.

2. Confirm connectivity at the time of use

Turn on Wi‑Fi or mobile data and verify that the phone can load a normal online page. Airplane mode, a disabled SIM data connection, or Wi‑Fi without internet access can prevent an alert from reaching the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you rely on Wi‑Fi, check what happens after leaving that network. Mobile data should be available if the phone is expected to receive warnings while traveling. A switch that is on while the phone is offline cannot overcome the missing delivery path.

3. Check the region

Compare your current location with Google’s live supported-country and region information. The feature is not global, and moving across a border can change whether Earthquake Alerts are offered even when the same phone and account are used.

Do not infer support from a friend’s phone in another country, from an old screenshot, or from the existence of a general Safety and emergency menu. Support is determined by the current service coverage and can change as Google expands or adjusts the system.

4. Check Android and Google Play services

Install available Android updates that your device supports. Then confirm that Google Play services is present, enabled, and current. Because Google identifies that service as the provider for Earthquake Alerts, disabling or removing it can affect availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android 9 or later is the baseline Google cites for some safety and emergency features, but the exact menu and behavior still depend on the manufacturer and region. Updating may improve compatibility, yet it cannot add service coverage where the feature is not supported.

5. Review interruption settings

Inspect notification permissions, notification-channel behavior, alert volume, vibration, and Do Not Disturb. Also check whether a paired wearable, connected car, or other device is handling notifications in a way that makes the phone appear silent.

A quiet phone is not necessarily a failed detection. The alert may have been presented with vibration or a notification while sound was restricted. Review the settings that determine whether urgent notifications can interrupt the current mode, then keep Wi‑Fi or mobile data active.

6. Consider timing and detection limits

Google does not promise that every earthquake can be detected. Magnitude and shaking-intensity estimates can be wrong, and an alert can arrive before, during, or after shaking begins. If all configuration checks pass, a late or absent message may reflect those system limits rather than a setting you can repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

People very close to an earthquake’s source may feel the first shaking before a message can be generated and delivered. People farther away may receive more warning time. The timing of one event therefore cannot be used as a universal performance test for every future event.

What an Android Earthquake Alert can—and cannot—promise

Timing is variable

The service is intended to provide useful seconds of warning when possible, but warning time depends on the earthquake’s location, the phone’s distance from it, detection speed, network delivery, and the estimated intensity at your location. People very close to the source may receive a warning during or after the first shaking, while people farther away may receive it earlier.

Google’s product announcement describes the purpose as: “A few seconds of warning when an earthquake hits can give you crucial time to take cover and protect yourself and your loved ones.” That is an opportunity for action, not a promise of a fixed number of seconds or a guaranteed advance message.

Estimates can change

Initial magnitude and shaking estimates are generated quickly and may contain errors. An alert should be treated as an immediate prompt to pay attention and follow local emergency guidance, not as a precise measurement or a guarantee that severe shaking will occur at your exact address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first alert and later information can therefore differ. Do not wait for a perfect estimate before taking sensible protective action, and do not assume that a warning means every nearby building will experience the same shaking.

Coverage is supplemental

Android Earthquake Alerts should supplement, not replace, official warnings from local authorities, government agencies, carriers, or emergency-management systems. Those channels can use different sensors, coverage rules, and alert policies.

Keep official local information available when possible. Android’s service is an additional warning channel, not a substitute for evacuation instructions, local emergency procedures, or messages issued by authorities responsible for the affected area.

Android Earthquake Alerts compared with other warning channels

The systems below are related but not interchangeable. The comparison explains why receiving one warning channel does not prove that another is configured correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Warning channel Detection source Geographic coverage Connectivity or delivery requirement Priority and role Timing expectation
Android Earthquake Alerts System Participating Android phones, where supported Supported countries and regions outside the ShakeAlert area Wi‑Fi or mobile data; compatible Android and Google Play services Above ordinary app notifications; supplemental warning May arrive before, during, or after shaking
ShakeAlert-based Android alerts ShakeAlert infrastructure California, Oregon, and Washington Wi‑Fi or mobile data; compatible Android and Google Play services Above ordinary app notifications; supplemental warning May arrive before, during, or after shaking
Wireless emergency alerts Government or authorized emergency-warning systems delivered through wireless networks Depends on the issuing authority and carrier coverage Wireless-network and device support; settings can control presentation Higher priority than Android Earthquake Alerts Depends on the issuing system and event
Emergency Alert System messages Official emergency authorities and broadcasters Depends on the authority and broadcast area Compatible receiving equipment and an active broadcast path Higher priority than Android Earthquake Alerts Depends on the issuing authority

The table describes roles, not a promise that every channel will issue a message for the same event. An official alert may appear without an Android Earthquake Alert, and the reverse can also occur.

Availability and service scale

Google announced on October 15, 2026 that Android Earthquake Alerts had delivered more than one billion alerts and had expanded from 98 countries and regions to more than 200. Those are Google’s cumulative service figures as of that announcement, not a prediction for any individual phone or location. Regional availability remains the deciding factor for a particular user.

The expansion shows that the service is broad, but “more than 200” does not mean every territory, device, or event is covered identically. In California, Oregon, and Washington, the detection source is ShakeAlert; elsewhere in supported coverage, it is the Android Earthquake Alerts System. Use the current Android Help location list for a precise answer.

Because the supported-region list can change, use the current Android Help page rather than relying on an old country list copied into another article. A phone can retain the Earthquake alerts setting while the feature’s availability, detection source, or behavior differs after travel or regional changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical readiness checklist

  • Earthquake alerts appears in Settings and the switch is on.
  • The phone has an active Wi‑Fi or mobile-data connection.
  • The current country or region is supported.
  • The Android release is compatible with the phone’s safety features.
  • Google Play services is installed, enabled, and current.
  • Notification permission, sound, vibration, and Do Not Disturb settings allow urgent warnings to be noticed.
  • You understand that the separate Wireless emergency alerts test is not an Earthquake Alerts simulation.
  • You treat Android warnings as an additional channel alongside official local emergency information.

If every item is satisfied, the phone is configured as well as Android’s documented controls allow. There is still no user-triggered earthquake simulation and no guarantee that every real earthquake will produce a warning before shaking.

Frequently asked questions

Are Android Earthquake Alerts already on?

Google says Earthquake alerts are on by default on supported phones. Verify the switch anyway, because support depends on the current region, Android version, Google Play services, and network connection.

Where is Earthquake alerts in Settings?

Start with Settings > Safety and emergency > Earthquake alerts. If it is not there, try Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts, or search Settings for the exact phrase.

Can I send myself a test earthquake?

No Google-documented control sends a simulated Earthquake Alerts warning. The separate Wireless emergency alerts test is not an Earthquake Alerts test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my phone not warn me?

Check the switch, Wi‑Fi or mobile data, supported region, Android compatibility, Google Play services, and notification or Do Not Disturb settings. Even when all are correct, Google says some earthquakes are not detected, estimates can be wrong, and a warning may arrive before, during, or after shaking.

Does an alert cover every earthquake of magnitude 4.5?

No. Magnitude 4.5 and above is the approximate level described by Google for nearby earthquakes. Distance, estimated shaking, detection, and available information determine whether your phone receives an alert.

Does Android Earthquake Alerts replace government warnings?

No. It is a supplemental channel. Wireless emergency alerts and Emergency Alert System messages are separate official channels and have higher notification priority than Android Earthquake Alerts.

What happens if I travel to another country?

Availability can change because support is regional. Check Google’s current supported-country and region information after moving, and keep the phone connected to Wi‑Fi or mobile data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a separate earthquake accessory required?

No physical product is required to enable or verify the software feature. The relevant checks are the Android setting, supported location, connectivity, compatible software, Google Play services, and notification controls.
