To turn on Android earthquake alerts, open Settings, choose Safety & emergency, select Earthquake alerts, and switch the feature on. If Safety & emergency is missing, use Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts instead. Keep Wi‑Fi or mobile data enabled: Google says an internet connection is required for the alerts.
The setting is not available on every phone or in every location. Searching Settings for Earthquake alerts is the quickest support check. If no result appears after you try both menu paths, the feature may be unavailable for your country or region, your device or software build, or the network configuration in use.

Turn on Android earthquake alerts
Use the following sequence on the phone you want to protect. The labels are the ones specified in Google’s Android guidance; wording or menu placement can vary with a device’s software build.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency.
- Tap Earthquake alerts.
- Switch the earthquake-alert feature on.
- Leave Wi‑Fi or mobile data enabled so the phone can receive the alert. Google states that connectivity is required.
After the switch is on, there is no separate registration step described by Google. The control simply enables the service when it is supported for your location, phone, software build, and available network.

If you cannot find Safety & emergency
Google provides a second route to the same control:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Tap Advanced.
- Tap Earthquake alerts and switch it on.
Try this path even when the first menu is absent. A missing Safety & emergency heading does not by itself prove that your phone is unsupported.
Check whether your Android phone supports the feature
The most reliable on-device check is a Settings search:
- Open Settings.
- Use the Settings search field and enter Earthquake alerts.
- Open the result if it appears.
- Confirm that the switch can be viewed and changed.
If the result opens the control, your current software exposes the feature. Turn it on there if it is off. If the search returns nothing, try both full menu paths above before treating the absence as a compatibility problem.

Where Android earthquake alerts are available
Google says earthquake alerts are not supported in all areas and are delivered only in supported countries. Availability is therefore a location question as well as a phone question. A compatible-looking handset can still lack the setting when it is being used in a country or region where the service is not offered.
In an announcement dated October 15, 2026, Google said Android Earthquake Alerts had expanded from 98 countries and regions to more than 200. That is a broad rollout figure, not a guarantee for every location. Your own Settings menu remains the practical test because the expansion does not eliminate regional restrictions or differences between device and software builds.
If you travel, the control’s presence and the service’s behavior can depend on the supported availability of the area in which the phone is operating. Do not infer support solely from a friend’s phone, a different handset model, or a list published for another country.

What an Android earthquake alert can—and cannot—do
Earthquake alerts are an additional warning channel, not a promise of advance notice. Google lists several limits that should shape how you use them:

- You might not receive an alert for every earthquake.
- Magnitude and shaking estimates can contain errors.
- An alert can arrive before shaking starts, while shaking is already occurring, or after shaking has begun.
- The service does not guarantee that you will have time to react before strong movement reaches you.
Google’s October 15, 2026 announcement describes a full-screen “Take Action” alert for moderate to heavy shaking. Treat that presentation as an instruction to respond, not as evidence that every earthquake will generate the same screen or that every region receives the same experience. Availability of the announced experience remains subject to supported-country and regional rollout.
Because alerts can be late, early, or absent, keep following local emergency guidance and maintain personal earthquake preparedness. The Android setting supplements official warning systems and sensible safety planning; it does not replace either one.
Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective Earthquake alerts setting
1. Search Settings again using the exact feature name
Start with the phrase Earthquake alerts, including the plural “alerts.” Open any matching result instead of relying only on the location of a menu you remember from another Android phone. If search finds the control, the phone’s current software is at least exposing the feature and you can enable it directly.

Use each route in full:
- Settings > Safety & emergency > Earthquake alerts
- Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts
Do not stop after finding that one heading is missing. Google specifically documents the Location path as an alternative when Safety & emergency is not listed.

3. Restore the required connection
Turn on Wi‑Fi or mobile data, then reopen the Earthquake alerts page. Google says connectivity is required to receive alerts, so an offline phone cannot be expected to obtain them. If you normally disable both radios to save battery or data, include a connection in your emergency-readiness routine.
4. Update the phone and restart it
Install any available Android updates and Google Play system updates. Restart the phone after the updates finish, then search Settings again and repeat both menu paths. This sequence can reveal a control that was not exposed by the earlier software state, but an update cannot create regional support where Google does not offer the service.
5. Confirm the phone’s current country or region
Check where the device is being used and compare that with Google’s supported-country requirement. A missing control can indicate unsupported availability rather than a mistake in your settings. The October 2026 expansion to more than 200 countries and regions still leaves some locations outside the service.
6. Separate a missing setting from a missed alert
A phone can show the Earthquake alerts control and still not alert for a particular event. Google cautions that not every earthquake produces an alert and that estimates can be wrong. If the control is enabled, the phone is connected, and the feature is supported in your area, a single missed warning is not proof that activation failed.

7. Recognize what maintenance software cannot change
Cleaning apps, notification managers, and other maintenance tools cannot create a feature that is unavailable for your region, device, software build, or network configuration. Troubleshooting should focus first on the Settings search, both documented paths, connectivity, updates, restart, and regional availability.

Once the switch is on, verify the conditions that affect delivery without waiting for an earthquake:
- Settings search still finds Earthquake alerts.
- The feature’s switch remains on when you reopen the page.
- At least one connection method—Wi‑Fi or mobile data—is enabled.
- Android and Google Play system updates have been installed when offered.
- The phone is being used in a country or region where Google supports the service.
- You know that an alert may precede, coincide with, follow, or fail to appear for an earthquake.
This check confirms configuration; it does not simulate an earthquake or guarantee a future notification. Avoid turning the feature off simply because no test alert appears during ordinary use.

How to respond to the alert experience
For moderate to heavy shaking, Google’s October 15, 2026 announcement refers to a full-screen “Take Action” alert. If that screen appears, treat it as an immediate warning and follow your local earthquake-safety procedure. The wording and presentation should not be interpreted as a universal promise: Google’s service is region-limited, estimates can contain errors, and alerts may arrive at different points relative to the shaking.
For that reason, decide your response before an alert appears. Know where you would move away from hazards and how you would follow local official instructions. Android’s notification is one input in that decision, not a substitute for preparation.
A concise decision guide
- You see Earthquake alerts: open it, switch it on, and keep Wi‑Fi or mobile data enabled.
- You do not see Safety & emergency: use Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts.
- You see no result anywhere: update Android and Google Play system components, restart, and search again.
- The control is still absent: check whether the phone is in a supported country or region; absence can reflect device, software-build, or network limitations.
- The control is on but one earthquake produced no warning: remember that Google does not promise an alert for every earthquake and that delivery can occur before, during, or after shaking.
The practical answer is therefore two-part: enable the control through either documented Settings path, then verify that your phone’s region, software, and internet connection support delivery. Keep the feature as a supplement to local warning systems and personal preparedness, not as a guaranteed countdown.
