To turn on NFC on a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings → Connections and enable NFC or NFC and contactless payments. With NFC on, you can read a compatible tag by bringing the back of an unlocked phone close to it, or make a contactless payment after setting up a supported card and payment service. The exact menu wording and antenna position vary by model and software version.
Where is the NFC setting on a Samsung Galaxy?
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then look for NFC or NFC and contactless payments.
- Turn on the NFC switch. If the option is hard to find, search for “NFC” in Settings.
Samsung manuals document both menu labels, so the path is not identical on every Galaxy. NFC availability also depends on the model; check the specifications for your exact device. See the Galaxy S23 Series user manual and Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual for examples.

How to read an NFC tag with your Samsung phone
- Turn NFC on using the steps above.
- Wake the phone and unlock the screen.
- Bring the back of the phone close to the tag. When the phone detects it, the tag information should appear.
The antenna is on the back, but its precise location is model-specific. If the tag is not detected at the first position, move the phone slowly across the tag to find the antenna’s range. A tag must contain information or be configured for the action you want; simply touching an arbitrary tag does not guarantee a useful result.
How to pay with NFC on a Samsung Galaxy
Contactless payment requires more than switching NFC on: you need a supported payment service and a card that the service and issuer accept. Samsung Wallet availability and participating cards vary by country, device, and issuer.

- Set up a supported payment service, such as Samsung Wallet where available, and add a supported card by following the app and issuer prompts. Samsung’s Samsung Wallet FAQ explains its U.S. card setup process.
- Enable NFC in Settings → Connections.
- If your phone asks you to choose a default contactless-payment app, select the service you intend to use.
- Open or authenticate to the payment service as required, then hold the back of the phone close to the contactless reader until it confirms the transaction. The reader may still ask you to enter your card PIN.
Check Samsung’s local Wallet information and your card issuer’s eligibility details for current availability. Digital keys are a separate feature with their own device, operating-system, service, and regional requirements; NFC support by itself does not establish digital-key compatibility. Samsung’s Wallet Digital Key compatibility matrix applies to the specific digital-key features it lists, not to every Galaxy model’s NFC capability.
Why is NFC not working on your Samsung phone?
Try these checks in order, changing one thing at a time so you can tell what fixes the problem:

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
- Confirm NFC is enabled. Find the NFC switch under Settings → Connections.
- For payment problems, check the default service. Make sure the intended payment app is selected and that its card setup is complete.
- Adjust phone placement. The antenna location differs by model. Move the back of the phone gradually near the tag or terminal.
- Toggle NFC. Turn it off, wait briefly, then turn it on and retry.
- Remove possible interference. Take off the case or accessory, especially one containing magnets, cards, or metal, and try again.
- For a possible SIM-related issue, follow local support guidance. Samsung Hong Kong suggests reseating the SIM and restarting for some cases involving SIM-stored NFC service information. That is regional guidance, not a universal remedy; consult Samsung Hong Kong’s NFC troubleshooting instructions or contact Samsung support in your region.
Do all Samsung phones have NFC?
No. NFC is not available on every Galaxy model, and a phone that supports NFC tags is not automatically eligible for every payment service or Wallet feature. Check the specifications for your exact model in your region, then confirm that your payment provider and card issuer support it. Samsung’s digital-key compatibility list covers only the particular Wallet digital-key features shown there, not a complete worldwide list of NFC-capable phones.
Can you use programmable NFC tags with a Samsung phone?
A compatible Galaxy can read NFC tags, and programmable tags or stickers can be useful for experiments such as opening information or triggering an action through compatible software. The phone, tag chip and format, and app all need to support the intended use. A tag alone does not enable contactless payment, and not every tag or Galaxy model is interchangeable. Check the tag’s specifications and the instructions for the app you plan to use before buying or programming one.
