The developer console is a text interface for commands exposed by the game or server. It can be useful for administration, troubleshooting, testing, and other tasks that are difficult through normal menus. The exact command names, arguments, and permissions can change between game and server versions, so the command inventory shown by your own installation is more reliable than a copied list from an older guide.
This guide covers V Rising on PC. It does not assume that a particular server host, mod, or third-party utility is installed. You need the game, a keyboard, and—if you are joining a dedicated server—the cooperation of whoever administers that server.

Enable the console in the game options
- Start V Rising and reach the main menu or enter a world.
- Open Options.
- Select General, then open the Interface section.
- Turn on Console Enabled.
- Return to gameplay. If you changed the option from the main menu, enter the world before testing the key.
Stunlock documented this menu path in its May 15, 2026 troubleshooting guidance. The setting is a prerequisite for opening the console; pressing the keyboard key without enabling it will not make the console appear.
Open the console and confirm that it works
Use the key’s physical position
With the option enabled, press the key directly below Escape. Do not choose a key solely by the character printed on an English-language diagram. Stunlock gives § and backtick (`) as examples, but layouts place different symbols in that position. On some keyboards the key may display a different character even though it is the correct physical key.
Run the built-in command list
When the console is visible, type list and press Enter. The command list is the quickest way to verify that the console is accepting input and to discover what the current game or server exposes. It also avoids relying on an old web page whose syntax no longer matches your installation.
Read the output for command spelling, required arguments, and any permission information shown by your build. Treat that output as the operational reference for the session. If a command is absent, has a different argument format, or reports that you lack permission, do not keep retrying a copied version.

Console access versus administrator permission
Opening the console and being allowed to execute administrative commands are different things. Enabling Console Enabled controls the local interface. It does not, by itself, grant authority over a dedicated server or allow an ordinary player to elevate their account.
Local game or local host
A player hosting or running a local game can use the console functions available to that local session after enabling the option. The commands and their arguments still come from the installed build’s list output, and a command may have effects on the save or on other players in that session.
Dedicated server
For a dedicated server, the server owner controls authorization. The owner must add your Steam ID to adminlist.txt, located in the server’s Settings folder, before you can use commands that require administrator rights. You cannot add yourself from the in-game console, and enabling the interface does not bypass the server’s permission check.
After the owner has updated the file, reconnect if necessary and use adminauth when the server’s command flow requires it. The command will be denied if the Steam ID is missing, mistyped, or associated with a different account. Ask the owner to verify the ID and the file rather than trying random command variants.

Local game and dedicated server: what changes?

Use commands without relying on stale examples
Start with list, not a search result
Command references on the web can be useful for explaining categories, but they are secondary to the list generated by your own game or server. A community-maintained V Rising Mod Wiki page displayed 196 command entries when checked on October 13, 2026. That number is a snapshot of that page, not a guarantee that every installation exposes exactly 196 commands.
Stunlock’s official hosting documentation and troubleshooting guidance both point readers toward checking the commands available in the running build. Version changes can rename commands, alter parameters, change permissions, or remove entries. Use an external reference only to understand a command after confirming that the command appears in your own list output.

Match every argument to the installed version
Some commands accept no arguments; others require a player name, value, identifier, or setting. Copy the spelling and argument order shown by the in-game help or list output. If the output supplies command-specific help, read it before pressing Enter. A syntactically valid command can still affect the wrong player, save, or server state if its target argument is wrong.
Expect permission errors to be meaningful
An “unknown command” style response usually indicates that the command is not present under that name in this build. A denial or authorization response points instead to permissions, especially on a dedicated server. These are different problems: changing keyboard settings will not fix a missing admin entry, and editing adminlist.txt will not make an incorrectly spelled command appear.

Troubleshoot a console that will not open
The key does nothing
- Reopen Options > General > Interface and confirm that Console Enabled is still on.
- Press the physical key immediately below Escape, even if its printed symbol is not backtick or section sign.
- Test while actively in the game world rather than in a text field or unrelated menu.
- If you use a non-US layout, identify the key by position. The character shown in instructions may not match your keyboard.
These checks address the two documented prerequisites: the option must be enabled and the correct position-based key must be pressed. They do not require changing server permissions.

The console opens but list fails
- Check that you typed the command in the console and submitted it with Enter.
- Use lowercase spelling exactly as displayed by your build.
- Reconnect to the intended world or server and run
listagain, since the available command set can be session-dependent. - Do not substitute a command table copied from an earlier game version.
adminauth is denied
On a dedicated server, ask the owner to confirm that your Steam ID appears in adminlist.txt in the server’s Settings folder. Have the owner check every digit and confirm that the file belongs to the server you joined. Reconnect after a change if the server requires a fresh session. Console visibility can be working perfectly while authorization remains denied.
A command runs but produces an unexpected result
Stop and inspect the command’s current help or list entry. Verify the target, value, and argument order before trying again. If the command changes items, progression, world state, or another player’s experience, restore the save or server state rather than repeatedly testing an uncertain syntax.

The Tech How guide, checked against official documentation on September 2, 2026, recommends backing up a local save before commands that create items, alter progression, or affect other players. This is practical secondary guidance, not a stated Stunlock requirement, but it is a sensible safeguard because console actions can change persistent state.

- Make a separate copy of the relevant local save before experimentation.
- On a shared server, tell other players when a command may alter their characters, inventory, progression, or the world.
- Use a low-risk discovery step first: open the console and run
list. - Record the exact command and arguments you used so you can identify what changed if something goes wrong.
Do not assume that a command can be undone simply because it was entered in a text console. A backup gives you a recovery path; it does not grant permission or guarantee that every multiplayer state can be rolled back cleanly.
Performance troubleshooting commands are a separate issue
Stunlock’s May 15, 2026 troubleshooting article documents JobThreads 1 and JobThreads 4 in the context of a specific performance workaround. Those commands are not required to enable the console, discover commands, or authenticate a server administrator. Do not enter them as routine setup steps, and do not treat their presence in troubleshooting documentation as evidence that they improve every system.
A repeatable workflow for administrators and players
- Enable the interface: Options > General > Interface > Console Enabled.
- Open it by position: press the key immediately below Escape.
- Discover the live syntax: enter
listand read the output for your current build. - Check the context: determine whether you are in a local session or connected to a dedicated server.
- Confirm authorization: if the command requires admin rights on a dedicated server, have the owner place your Steam ID in
adminlist.txtunder the server’sSettingsfolder. - Authenticate as required: use
adminauthonly after the server has authorized your account and the live command list indicates that it is available. - Back up before impact: protect a local save before commands that alter persistent data or other players’ experience.
- Use version-matched arguments: follow the syntax shown by the installed game’s help or list output, not an unverified copy.
This sequence separates interface problems, keyboard-layout problems, version mismatches, and server-permission problems. That makes each failure easier to diagnose without granting privileges that the server owner has not assigned.
