To turn on a Chromebook keyboard backlight, use the keyboard’s backlight-brightness keys. Press the dimming key to reduce brightness or the brightening key to increase it. If your Chromebook has supported RGB hardware, open Settings > Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style, then choose a color under Keyboard backlight. The exact keys and available color controls depend on the model and keyboard layout.
“Lid light” is less specific. ChromeOS documentation identifies a possible has-lid-light-sensor hardware property, but that describes a sensor in the lid, not a universal, user-customizable lamp. The Chromebook model and the light’s location are required before giving a model-specific lid-light procedure.

First, identify which light you mean
Chromebooks can have several different kinds of illumination, and they are not controlled in the same way:
- Keyboard backlight: light beneath the keys that can usually be dimmed or brightened with dedicated keyboard controls.
- RGB keyboard backlight: a supported gaming-oriented keyboard whose color can be selected in ChromeOS settings.
- Status indicator: a small LED that may show charging, power, sleep, camera, or another hardware state. ChromeOS does not provide one universal setting for every indicator.
- Lid light or lid sensor: an exterior light or a sensor mounted in the display lid. Its behavior is model-specific, and the general consumer settings documented by Google do not provide a universal customization path.
If the light is under the keys, follow the keyboard instructions below. If it is on the outside of the lid, note the exact Chromebook model and where the light is located before changing settings; the same-looking LED can serve different hardware functions on different models.

Turn on or adjust the keyboard backlight
Use the dedicated brightness keys
On a Chromebook with a backlit keyboard, the top row includes controls for decreasing and increasing keyboard-backlight brightness. The keys use backlight icons rather than a single universal key number. Press the dimming control repeatedly to lower the light and the brightening control repeatedly to raise it. If the light is currently off, pressing the brightening control should bring it up through its available levels.
Google’s shortcut documentation describes these controls for customers in the United States using a standard English QWERTY keyboard. Other physical layouts can place the controls differently, so follow the backlight symbols printed on your own keyboard instead of assuming a particular key position. A keyboard without a backlight icon may not include a built-in backlight.
Check whether the keyboard supports a backlight
Backlight controls only work when the Chromebook’s hardware includes an illuminated keyboard. A shortcut cannot add a light to a keyboard that was manufactured without one. Confirm the exact model and configuration in the Chromebook’s hardware specifications or its original documentation; two configurations sold under a similar name can have different keyboards.

- Look across the top row for keys marked with a keyboard-light or sun-over-key symbol.
- Press the brightening key once and watch for a visible change in a dark room.
- If no icon is present and no key changes the illumination, verify the model specification before treating it as a software fault.
What the brightness controls do
The brightness keys adjust intensity, not color. On a single-color backlight, the available levels are limited to the steps implemented by that keyboard. Setting the light to its lowest level may make it appear off even though the backlight is still enabled; press the brightening key again to test it.
Change the color on a supported RGB Chromebook
Google’s Chromebook gaming guidance provides a color selector for supported RGB keyboards. The documented route is:
- Open the ChromeOS Settings app.
- Select Wallpaper and style.
- Choose Set your wallpaper & style.
- Find Keyboard backlight.
- Select the color you want and close Settings.
Google says the default keyboard color is based on the current wallpaper. Choosing a custom color replaces that wallpaper-based default when the hardware supports the option. This setting changes the keyboard backlight color; it does not change unrelated status LEDs or an exterior light on the lid.

Why “Keyboard backlight” may be missing
The color control is hardware-dependent. Google’s gaming instructions specifically identify the Acer Chromebook 516 GE, ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip, and Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook as examples covered by its RGB guidance. Google also explicitly notes that the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip does not support an RGB keyboard. That distinction means a model can be marketed for gaming yet still have a non-RGB keyboard.

Exact variants matter. A regional configuration, refresh, or different screen-and-keyboard combination can omit the RGB hardware even when the family name is similar. If Keyboard backlight does not appear under Wallpaper and style, first verify the full model and configuration rather than assuming that ChromeOS is malfunctioning.

Keep Battery Saver from switching the backlight off
Battery Saver can turn off the keyboard backlight. If the light disappears after the Chromebook enters a low-power state, check the power settings before resetting ChromeOS or assuming the keyboard has failed.

- Open Settings.
- Select System preferences.
- Open Power.
- Check whether Battery Saver is enabled or active.
- Turn Battery Saver off temporarily, then press the keyboard brightening key.
If the backlight returns when Battery Saver is no longer active, the behavior is a power-saving policy rather than evidence of a damaged keyboard. You can choose whether to keep Battery Saver enabled and accept the backlight shutdown or disable it when keyboard illumination is more important than the additional power savings.

The brightness keys do nothing
- Confirm the hardware: check the exact Chromebook specification for a backlit keyboard. A non-backlit keyboard cannot be enabled by software.
- Use the correct key symbols: Google’s shortcut examples assume a US English QWERTY layout. International layouts can place controls differently.
- Try the brightening control in a dark room: a low level can be difficult to see in daylight.
- Check Battery Saver: follow the Settings > System preferences > Power path and test again with Battery Saver inactive.
- Check for a model-specific mode: gaming models can expose RGB controls only when their supported hardware is detected.
The keyboard lights, but the color option is absent
This usually means the keyboard is backlit but not RGB, or that the exact configuration is not one of the models supported by the documented RGB feature. A backlight-brightness control and an RGB color selector are separate capabilities. Verify the full model identifier and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification; do not infer RGB support from the presence of a gaming label alone.

- Choose a visibly different color and check the keyboard in a dim environment.
- Press the brightness-increase key after selecting the color; the light may be set to its lowest level.
- Confirm that the setting is being applied to the built-in keyboard rather than an external keyboard, which may use its own controls.
- If the setting disappears after a restart or power change, check Battery Saver and the model’s documented feature support.
Only an exterior light is visible
Do not use the keyboard instructions to control a lamp or indicator on the outside of the display lid. Identify whether it is a charging indicator, camera or privacy indicator, sleep/power light, or another model-specific component. ChromeOS’s has-lid-light-sensor property refers to a light sensor in the lid; it is not proof that the Chromebook includes a decorative, user-adjustable lid lamp.
What can and cannot be customized

How to identify your Chromebook before seeking lid-light instructions
Because “lid light” is not a single standardized feature, gather these details:
- Read the model name from the label on the underside, the box, or the Chromebook’s system information.
- Record the full configuration when available, including processor, memory, display size, and regional model code.
- Describe the light’s location: beside the charging port, near the camera, on the outside of the lid, around a logo, or elsewhere.
- Describe when it turns on: while charging, during startup, when the lid opens, during a video call, or continuously.
- Note whether it changes color or blinks without any user action.
Those observations distinguish an indicator with a fixed hardware meaning from a genuinely configurable lamp. Without them, promising a ChromeOS menu path would risk directing you to a setting your Chromebook does not have.
Practical power and usability choices
A brighter keyboard backlight is easier to see in a dark room but consumes more power than a dimmer setting. If battery runtime matters, use the lowest level that keeps the key legends readable and let Battery Saver apply its documented power-saving behavior. If you need the keyboard illuminated while working away from a charger, check the Battery Saver state first when the light unexpectedly turns off.
Color selection is cosmetic and applies to the supported RGB keyboard. It does not alter the brightness range, enable lighting on a non-backlit keyboard, or control the Chromebook’s charging and status indicators. Treat those as separate hardware functions when diagnosing a problem.
