How to Turn On and Customize a Windows 11 Screen Saver

To enable a screen saver in Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, choose Screen saver under Related settings, select a saver, set its Wait time, and select OK or Apply. You can also preview the result, customize savers that provide a Settings… button, and require sign-in when the saver ends.

This setting controls an animated or image-based display shown during inactivity. It does not control when Windows turns the display off or puts the computer to sleep; those are separate power settings.

Enable a screen saver from Windows 11 Settings

The complete path is Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver. The following procedure uses the labels in Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings. The quickest route is to press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Personalization in the left navigation.
  3. Choose Lock screen.
  4. Scroll to Related settings, then select Screen saver. This opens the classic Screen Saver Settings window.
  5. Open the screen-saver drop-down list and select the effect you want. The list can include options such as 3D Text and Photos.
  6. If the selected saver has a Settings… button, select it and change the available options. The controls depend on the saver you selected.
  7. Set Wait to the number of idle minutes that should pass before the saver starts.
  8. Optionally select On resume, display logon screen if Windows should require sign-in when activity resumes.
  9. Select Preview to test the effect, then select Apply and OK to save the configuration.

If you do not want a saver, choose (None) in the drop-down list, then apply the change. The screen-saver window is separate from the modern Settings pages, so it is normal for a classic dialog to appear after you select the link.

Choose the right saver and customize it

What the drop-down choices do

A screen saver replaces the ordinary desktop view with visual content after the computer has been idle for the selected interval. The available choices are installed with Windows or supplied by software on the PC, so the list can differ between computers. Selecting a name changes which saver Windows launches; it does not change the computer’s display-off or sleep timers.

When the Settings… button is available

Some savers expose additional controls and some do not. Microsoft’s examples, 3D Text and Photos, can be customized through Settings…. A Photos configuration can let you choose the image source or presentation options available on that PC, while 3D Text can expose text-related choices. Do not expect every saver to offer the same controls. If Settings… is unavailable or disabled, use the saver’s default behavior and adjust only the controls shown in the main dialog.

Use Preview before saving

Preview starts the selected saver immediately so you can check its appearance without waiting for the idle period. Move the mouse or press a key to return to the dialog. Preview is useful for confirming that a photo folder, text effect, or animation looks right before you commit the setting.

Set when the screen saver starts

The Wait field is the screen saver’s inactivity timer. Enter or select the number of minutes Windows should wait after the last keyboard or mouse activity. For example, a value of 10 means the saver begins after ten minutes without detected activity. Changing this value affects the saver only; it does not automatically change when the display turns off or when the PC sleeps.

Choose an interval that matches the purpose of the saver:

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • A short interval shows the saver quickly when you step away, but it can interrupt reading or watching something if the PC does not detect activity.
  • A longer interval leaves the current screen visible for more time before switching to the saver.
  • If the main goal is reducing power use, use display-off and sleep timers instead of relying on a visual saver.

After changing Wait, select Preview or leave the computer idle long enough to verify the timing. Activity that wakes or dismisses the saver resets the interval.

Require sign-in when the saver ends

The checkbox On resume, display logon screen is an independent security choice. Select it when Windows should show the sign-in screen after the saver is dismissed. Clearing it allows the session to resume without using that screen-saver-triggered sign-in step, subject to other Windows sign-in and lock policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turning on a screen saver alone does not specify whether sign-in is required. Decide deliberately based on where the PC is used:

  • On a shared, public, or workplace computer, selecting the checkbox helps prevent someone who walks up during an unattended period from immediately viewing the open session.
  • On a private computer in a controlled space, you may prefer a seamless return, provided it is consistent with your normal lock and sign-in policy.

The checkbox applies when the screen saver is dismissed. It is not a replacement for configuring Windows’ broader lock, account, or organizational security policies.

Screen saver, screen off, and sleep are different settings

These features are often confused because all three can appear after inactivity. They have different triggers and purposes.

Feature What appears or happens Where its timing is set Main purpose
Screen saver An animation, image show, or other visual effect replaces the idle desktop. Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver, using Wait. Personalization, visual activity, and optional sign-in when the saver ends.
Screen off The display is turned off; the computer itself can remain running. Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Reducing display power while keeping the session available.
Sleep The PC enters a low-power state and can resume the open session. Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Reducing idle energy use while allowing a quick return.

A saver keeps the display active while it shows its animation or images. Microsoft Support states: “Sleep mode consumes significantly less power than running a screen saver and allows your computer to quickly resume where you left off.” If energy reduction is the reason you are changing the setting, configure sleep rather than treating the saver as a power-saving mode.

Use power settings when you want the display to turn off

To control display-off and sleep behavior, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Windows presents separate timeout choices, so you can decide independently how long the PC waits before turning off the screen and before entering sleep. These timers can operate even when no screen saver is enabled.

Some supported Windows 11 configurations also show Energy recommendations at Settings > System > Power & battery. That page can include Turn off my screen saver. Its presence depends on the Windows configuration and device; it is not a universal replacement for the Screen Saver Settings dialog.

A practical setup can use both features: a screen saver for a short visual transition, followed by a later screen-off or sleep timeout. Remember that each timer belongs to a different control, so changing Wait does not move the other deadlines.

Understand presence sensing on some Windows 11 PCs

Some Windows 11 devices can use presence sensing to change screen behavior when the user leaves. This capability is hardware-dependent, and the available options vary by device. On a managed computer, an organization can also limit or configure the feature.

Presence sensing is separate from the screen-saver dialog. If the screen turns off soon after you leave even though the Wait value is longer, check whether the device offers presence-sensing controls and whether workplace policy governs them. Do not assume that every Windows 11 PC has the hardware or settings required for this behavior.

Troubleshoot a saver that does not behave as expected

The Screen saver link is hard to find

Return to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen and look specifically under Related settings. The link opens a separate classic window, so it may not look like the surrounding Settings page. Windows updates can change page layout, but the Microsoft procedure applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10 and does not identify a Windows 11 build-specific variation.

The saver never starts

  • Confirm that the drop-down is not set to (None).
  • Check that Wait contains the interval you intended.
  • Leave the computer untouched for longer than that interval; moving the pointer or pressing a key resets inactivity.
  • Use Preview to verify that the selected saver can run.
  • Check the separate screen-off and sleep timers. The display may be turning off or the PC may be sleeping before you notice the saver.

The display turns off instead of showing the animation

That usually indicates a power timeout rather than a screen-saver problem. Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and compare the screen-off and sleep intervals with the screen saver’s Wait value. If the display-off timeout is shorter, Windows can turn off the screen before the saver is visible.

There is no Settings… button

The button is saver-specific. Select another saver to see whether it exposes configuration controls, or use the options available in the main dialog. The absence of a button does not prevent the saver from running; it means that saver has no additional controls exposed there.

Sign-in does not appear after movement

Reopen Screen Saver Settings and verify that On resume, display logon screen is checked. If the computer is managed, organizational sign-in or lock policies can also affect what appears. A screen saver without that checkbox does not, by itself, define the resume sign-in behavior.

The computer behaves differently from another Windows 11 PC

Compare the selected saver, Wait interval, power timers, presence-sensing capability, and management status. Device capabilities and organization settings can make options differ even when both computers run Windows 11.

Choose a configuration based on your goal

You want visual personalization

Select a saver, customize it through Settings… when available, choose a Wait interval, and use Preview to check the result. Leave the power timers unchanged unless you also want the display to turn off or the PC to sleep.

You want the session protected while you are away

Enable the saver and select On resume, display logon screen. This makes the resume behavior explicit instead of assuming that enabling the animation automatically locks the session.

You want lower idle energy use

Set screen-off and sleep timeouts in Power & battery. Sleep is the more appropriate choice for sustained idle periods because it uses substantially less power than continuously running a screen saver, according to Microsoft Support.

You want the display to react when you leave

Check whether your particular Windows 11 device supports presence sensing and whether your organization permits it. That behavior is independent of the screen saver’s Wait control.

What to remember

Windows 11 screen savers are enabled through the classic Screen Saver Settings dialog reached from Settings > Personalization > Lock screen. Pick the saver, customize it when controls are available, set Wait, preview it, and decide separately whether resume should show the logon screen. For a dark or sleeping display and lower idle energy use, configure the screen-off and sleep timeouts under System > Power & battery instead.
