To turn on ads for a monetized 24/7 YouTube livestream, open YouTube Studio, go to Create → Go live, select the stream, then choose Edit → Monetization. Set Monetization to On and choose how to handle live mid-rolls. YouTube says this also enables pre-roll and display ads, but an ad slot does not guarantee that every viewer will see an ad.
Before you enable ads
Your channel must be monetized, and monetization must be enabled for the specific live stream before YouTube can trigger ads. For Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue on eligible live streams watched on the Watch Page or embedded in the YouTube player, you must also accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module.

These settings control ad opportunities, not guaranteed delivery: YouTube decides whether an ad is served for a given slot, and some viewers may continue watching without seeing one. A livestream embedded on an external site with autoplay is an exception—YouTube says ads are turned off in that player context.

Turn on monetization in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go live.
- Start the livestream from the Stream tab, or schedule it from Manage.
- At the top of the stream setup, choose Edit → Monetization.
- Set Monetization to On.
- Choose a live mid-roll option: Automatic, Scheduled, or Manual.
YouTube’s step-by-step guidance is in Monetize your live stream. Studio labels or placement can change, so consult the current help page if your screen differs.

Choose how live mid-roll ads are handled

Automatic mode is the least hands-on choice for a stream that runs continuously. Fixed intervals provide a predictable schedule, while manual insertion gives you direct timing control but requires you to act during the broadcast.
Delay automatic mid-rolls around an important moment
In Live Control Room, use Delay ads to delay automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube shows a five-second countdown before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while this delay is on, so it does not suppress a manual break you insert.

Set a default for future livestreams
Eligible monetized channels without rights management can set defaults for future live streams in Live Control Room settings. YouTube says the default is monetization On with its recommended automatic medium option. Channels with rights management currently do not have these channel-level settings.
What ads and revenue to expect
Turning monetization on is the stream-level switch; the mid-roll mode separately determines how opportunities for ads during the broadcast are handled. Neither setting promises that an ad will appear for every viewer or that a particular stream will earn a specific amount.

YouTube Help reported that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not have live automatic mid-rolls turned on. The comparison covered 207 countries and was measured in January 2024; it is an aggregate historical comparison, not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel.
